[Excerpt] The hotel business has become a business of brands. Price Waterhouse Coopers estimates that there are over 300 hotel brands today with no one brand dominating the market. Every major brand management issue (brand extensions, global brand expansion, re-branding, un-branding, co-branding, brand portfolio development, brand acquisitions, new brand development, etc.) is being explored. An understanding of the competitive context and intra-and inter-brand dynamics will help owners, operators, asset managers, suppliers and litigators, as well as new entrants into the business make better and more informed brand management decisions.

The Porta Nocera 2 program aims to study the process of establishing and developing a Roman urban necropolis from a road network, which is an essential setting in the expression of death in the Roman time. As such, the necropolis of Porta Nocera essentially excavated between 1952 and 1958 and then in 1983 offers a privileged field study. Indeed, monuments and funerary enclosures with burial structures (graves, cremation areas) built along the road to Nocera are well preserved and allow to observe funerary practices on a relatively short time, about 160 years, since we can assume that the necropolis has been founded with the colony in 80 BC. It is then the necessity to organize a burial area according to Roman customs, which is at the origin a new landscape development until then essentially marked by the presence of the urban wall.

Platform strategies reflect a firm’s technology policy towards its new product development (NPD) activities. Depending on the technological complexities embedded in the platform, certain degree of interdependence is created between the firm and its suppliers. Firms may decide to what extent the suppliers should be involved in its NPD activities. There has been an increasing interest with issues related to supplier involvement in NPD. Involving suppliers early in NPD can help firms reduce costs, reduce concept-to-customer development time, improve quality, and provide innovative technologies. However, it requires a great effort and many tradeoffs need to be considered. This paper discusses the implications of early supplier involvement in new product development, specifically regarding to sourcing decisions and NPD processes when new components are designed and incorporated into the new platform. We would like to understand to what extent the NPD collaborates with suppliers, and at which stage of the NPD process suppliers are invited to participate in platform designs. A case study of Oticon, a Danish manufacturer of hearing aids, is presented. We describe how the successful introduction of a new platform of hearing aids is realized as well as how and when Oticon’s suppliers were involved during this process.

Manufacturing companies have passed from selling uniquely tangible products to adopting a service-oriented approach to generate steady and continuous revenue streams. Nowadays, equipment and machine manufacturers possess technologies to track and analyze product-related data for obtaining relevant information from customers’ use towards the product after it is sold. The Internet of Things on Industrial environments will allow manufacturers to leverage lifecycle product traceability for innovating towards an information-driven services approach, commonly referred as “Smart Services”, for achieving improvements in support, maintenance and usage processes. The aim of this study is to conduct a literature review and empirical analysis to present a framework that describes a customer-oriented approach for developing information-driven services leveraged by the Internet of Things in manufacturing companies. The empirical study employed tools for the assessment of customer needs for analyzing the case company in terms of information requirements and digital needs. The literature review supported the empirical analysis with a deep research on product lifecycle traceability and digitalization of product-related services within manufacturing value chains. As well as the role of simulation-based technologies on supporting the “Smart Servicedevelopment process. The results obtained from the case company analysis show that the customers mainly demand information that allow them to monitor machine conditions, machine behavior on different geographical conditions, machine-implement interactions, and resource and energy consumption. Put simply, information outputs that allow them to increase machine productivity for maximizing yields, save time and optimize resources in the most sustainable way. Based on customer needs assessment, this study presents a framework to describe the initial phases of a “Smart Servicedevelopment process, considering the requirements of Smart Engineering methodologies.

Chapter 1: Patents and Entry Competition in the Pharmaceutical Industry: The Role of Marketing Exclusivity. Effective patent length for innovation drugs is severely curtailed because of extensive efficacy and safety tests required for FDA approval, raising concern over adequacy of incentives for new drug development. The Hatch-Waxman Act extends patent length for new drugs by five years, but also promotes generic entry by simplifying approval procedures and granting 180-day marketing exclusivity to a first generic entrant before the patent expires. In this paper we present a dynamic model to examine the effect of marketing exclusivity. We find that marketing exclusivity may be redundant and its removal may increase generic firms' profits and social welfare. ^ Chapter 2: Why Authorized Generics?: Theoretical and Empirical Investigations Facing generic competition, the brand-name companies some-times launch generic versions themselves called authorized generics. This practice is puzzling. If it is cannibalization, it cannot be profitable. If it is divisionalization, it should be practiced always instead of sometimes. I explain this phenomenon in terms of switching costs in a model in which the incumbent first develops a customer base to ready itself against generic competition later. I show that only sufficiently low switching costs or large market size justifies launch of AGs. I then use prescription drug data to test those results and find support. ^ Chapter 3: The Merger Paradox and R&D Oligopoly theory says that merger is unprofitable, unless a majority of firms in industry merge. Here, we introduce R&D opportunities to resolve this so-called merger paradox. We have three results. First, when there is one R&D firm, that firm can profitably merge with any number of non-R&D firms. Second, with multiple R&D firms and multiple non-R&D firms, all R&D firms can profitably merge. Third, with two R&D firms and two non-R&D firms, each R&D firms prefer to merge with a non-R&D firm. With three or more than non-R&D firms, however, the R&D firms prefer to merge with each other.^

The role of sales has changed dramatically during the last two decades, with sales becoming increasingly strategic and encroaching on domains that traditionally belong to marketing. Many studies address the role of marketing in new product development (NPD) success, but research on the increasing importance of sales, its changing role and changing dynamics with marketing is scarce. This empirical study of 296 Hungarian firms addresses this gap and shows that the extent to which sales encroaches on marketing's tasks is influenced by interface relations, exchange processes and sales' capabilities. The effect of sales–marketing encroachment on NPD financial success is partially mediated by customer involvement, while its effect on market success is fully mediated by customer involvement. These findings suggest that firms may improve their NPD financial performance by letting sales encroach on marketing tasks, but need to establish customer co-creation initiatives to benefit from sales–marketing encroachment in terms of superior NPD performance compared with competitors.

Service development is guided by outcome measures that inform service commissioners and providers. Those in liaison psychiatry should be encouraged to develop a positive approach that integrates the collection of outcome measures into everyday clinical practice. The Framework for Routine Outcome Measurement in Liaison Psychiatry (FROM-LP) is a very useful tool to measure service quality and clinical effectiveness, using a combination of clinician-rated and patient-rated outcome measures and patient-rated experience measures. However, it does not include measures of cost-effectiveness or training activities. The FROM-LP is a significant step towards developing nationally unified outcome measures.

Literature emphasises the sparse research focused in collaborative and open approaches in the design conceptualisation stage, also known as the Fuzzy Front-End (FFE). Presently, the most challenging discussion arising from this specific field of research lies in understanding on whether or not to structure the referred conceptual stage. Accordingly, the established hypothesis behind this study sustains that a structured approach in the FFE would benefit the interdisciplinary dialogue. Therefore, two objectives support this study: to understand the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach in the FFE, and to test one proposed model for this conceptual stage. By means of a small-scale design experiment, this paper pretends to give additional contributions to this area of research, in the context of new product development (NPD). The general research supporting this specific study aims to conceptualise in the area of newly and futuristic aircraft configurations. Hence, this same topic based the conceptualisation process in the conducted ideation sessions, which are conducted by five different teams of three elements each. The results of the different ideation sessions reinforce the contemporary paradigm of Open Innovation (OI), which is based in trust and communication to better collaborate. The postulated hypothesis for this study is partially validated as teams testing the proposed and structured model generally consider that its usage would benefit the integration of different disciplines. Besides, a general feeling that a structured approach integrates different perspectives and gives creativity a focus pervades. Nevertheless, the small-scale of the design experiment attributes some limitations to this study, despite giving new insights in how to better organise coming and more sustained studies. Interestingly, the importance of sketching as an interdisciplinary means of communication is underlined with the obtained results.

Background. Clinical significance of multifocal pulmonary neuroendocrine proliferations (MNEP), including tumorlets and pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia, in association with Typical Carcinoid (TC), is still debated. Methods. A large retrospective series of TC with long-term follow-up data prospectively collected from two institutions was evaluated. Recurrence or new TC development was followed-up. Patients with TC alone and MNEP+TC were compared. Results. 234 TC patients undergone surgery were included: 41 MNEP+TC (17.5%) and 193 TC alone (82.5%). In the MNEP+TC group older age (p<0.001), peripheral tumors (p=0.0032), smaller tumor size (p=0.011) and lymph-nodal spread (p=0.02) were observed in comparison with TC group. Relapses occurred in 8 patients (19.5%) in the MNEP+TC group and in 7 (3.6%) of the TC group. The 10-years progression-free survival were 96.1% in TC and 83.8% in MNEP+TC (p<0.001). After matching, in 36 pairs of patients a significantly higher 5-years progression-free survival was calculated for TC group (p<0.01). Furthermore the odds of belonging to MNEP+TC group was higher with work-related exposure to inhalant agents (p=0.008), asthma/bronchitis (p=0.002), emphysema, fibrosis and inflammatory status (p=0.032), micronodules on the chest CT scan and respiratory insufficiency (p=0.036). Conclusions. The identification of MNEP requires careful pathological examination and postoperative follow-up. MNEP seems to be an adverse prognostic factor in patients with synchronous TC. Therefore, suspicion of MNEP during the pre-operative assessment should not be underestimated, enabling changes in the surgical strategy.

In recent years, vehicle acoustics have gained significant importance in new car development: increasingly advanced infotainment systems for spatial audio and sound enhancement algorithms have become the norm in modern vehicles. In the past, car manufacturers had to build numerous prototypes to study the sound behaviour inside the car cabin or the effect of new algorithms under development. Nowadays, advanced simulation techniques can reduce development costs and time. In this work, after selecting the reference test vehicle, a modern luxury sedan equipped with a high-end sound system, two independent tools were developed: a simulation tool created in the Comsol Multiphysics environment and an auralization tool developed in the Cycling ‘74 MAX environment. The simulation tool can calculate the impulse response and acoustic spectrum at a specific position inside the cockpit. Its input data are the vehicle’s geometry, acoustic absorption parameters of materials, the acoustic characteristics and position of loudspeakers, and the type and position of virtual microphones (or microphone arrays). The simulation tool can also provide binaural impulse responses thanks to Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) and an innovative algorithm able to compute the HRTF at any distance and angle from the head. Impulse responses from simulations or acoustic measurements inside the car cabin are processed and fed into the auralization tool, enabling real-time interaction by applying filters, changing the channels gain or displaying the acoustic spectrum. Since the acoustic simulation of a vehicle involves multiple topics, the focus of this work has not only been the development of two tools but also the study and application of new techniques for acoustic characterization of the materials that compose the cockpit and the loudspeaker simulation. Specifically, three different methods have been applied for material characterization through the use of a pressure-velocity probe, a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV), and a microphone array.
