This work aimed at an evaluation of the classical iodine method for quantification of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) in fruit juices, as well as at a search into the stability of this so popular vitamin under different conditions of pH, temperature and light exposition, in addition to a proposal of a new quantification method. Our results point to the persistent reversibility of the blue color of the starch-triiodide complex at the end point when using the classical iodine titration, and the overestimation of the true vitamin concentration in fruit juices. A new quantification method is proposed in order to overcome this problem. Surprising conclusions were obtained regarding the controversial stability of L-ascorbic acid toward atmospheric oxygen, at low pH, even in fruit juice and at room temperature, showing that the major problem concerned with aging of fruit juices is proliferation of microorganisms rather than expontaneous oxidation of L-ascorbic acid.

The basal dendritic arbors of 442 supragranular pyramidal cells in visual cortex of the marmoset monkey were compared by fractal analyses. As detailed in a previous study,(1) individual cells were injected with Lucifer Yellow and processed for a DAB reaction product. The basal dendritic arbors were drawn, in the tangential plane, and the fractal dimension (D) determined by the dilation method. The fractal dimensions were compared between cells in ten cortical areas containing cells involved in visual processing, including the primary visual area (Vi), the second visual area (V2), the dorsoanterior area (DA), the dorsomedial area (DM), the dorsolateral. area (DL), the middle temporal area (MT), the posterior parietal area (PP), the fundus of the superior temporal area (FST) and the caudal and rostral subdivisions of inferotemporal cortex (ITc and ITr, respectively). Of 45 pairwise interareal comparisons of the fractal dimension of neurones, 20 were significantly different. Moreover, comparison of data according to previously published visual processing pathways revealed a trend for cells with greater fractal dimensions in higher cortical areas. Comparison of the present results with those in homologous cortical areas in the macaque monkey(2) revealed some similarities between the two species. The similarity in the trends of D values of cells in both species may reflect developmental features which, result in different functional attributes.

In spite of their wide application in comminution circuits, hydrocyclones have at least one significant disadvantage in that their operation inherently tends to return the fine denser liberated minerals to the grinding mill. This results in unnecessary overgrinding which adds to the milling cost and can adversely affect the efficiency of downstream processes. In an attempt to solve this problem, a three-product cyclone has been developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to generate a second overflow in which the fine dense liberated minerals can be selectively concentrated for further treatment. In this paper, the design and operation of the three-product cyclone are described. The influence of the length of the second vortex finder on the performance of a 150-mm unit treating a mixture of magnetite and silica is investigated. Conventional cyclone tests were also conducted under similar conditions. Using the operational performance data of the three-product and conventional cyclones, it is shown that by optimising the length of the second vortex finder, the amount of fine dense mineral particles that reports to the three-product cyclone underflow can be reduced. In addition, the three-product cyclone can be used to generate middlings stream that may be more suitable for flash flotation than the conventional cyclone underflow, or alternatively, could be classified with a microscreen to separate the valuables from the gangue. At the same time, a fines stream having similar properties to those of the conventional overflow can be obtained. Hence, if the middlings stream was used as feed for flash flotation or microscreening, the fines stream could be used in lieu of the conventional overflow without compromising the feed requirements for the conventional flotation circuit. This paper describes preliminary work done towards the development of new metallic heterogeneous catalysts to be used in the transesterification reaction of triglycerides, which is of considerable interest in the production of biodiesel. Biodiesel, is a mixture of mono-alkyl esters of fatty acids, and is currently manufactured by transesterification of triglycerides with methanol using NaOH or KOH as liquid base catalyst. Catalysts as such are corrosive to the equipment, and as these catalysts are in liquid phase must be neutralized after the completion of the reaction, typically using HCl, thus producing salt streams. Moreover, due to the presence of free fatty acids it reacts to form soaps as unwanted by-products, hence requiring more expensive separation processes. Therefore, there is a great need on the development of industrial processes for biodiesel production using solid acid catalysts. The key benefit of using solid acid catalysts is that no polluting by-products are formed and the catalysts do not have to be removed since they do not mix with the biodiesel product.

Heavy metal pollution is a matter of concern in industrialised countries. Contrary to organic pollutants, heavy metals are not metabolically degraded. This fact has two main consequences: its bioremediation requires another strategy and heavy metals can be indefinitely recycled. Yeast cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are produced at high amounts as a by-product of brewing industry constituting a cheap raw material. In the present work, the possibility of valorising this type of biomass in the bioremediation of real industrial effluents containing heavy metals is reviewed. Given the autoaggregation capacity (flocculation) of brewing yeast cells, a fast and off-cost yeast separation is achieved after the treatment of metal-laden effluent, which reduces the costs associated with the process. This is a critical issue when we are looking for an effective, eco-friendly, and low-cost technology. The possibility of the bioremediation of industrial effluents linked with the selective recovery of metals, in a strategy of simultaneous minimisation of environmental hazard of industrial wastes with financial benefits from reselling or recycling the metals, is discussed.

[RuCl(arene)(-Cl)](2) dimers were treated in a 1:2 molar ratio with sodium or thallium salts of bis- and tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligands [Na(BpBr3)], [Tl(TpBr3)], and [Tl(Tp(iPr,4Br))]. Mononuclear neutral complexes [RuCl(arene)((2)-BpBr3)] (1: arene=p-cymene (cym); 2: arene=hexamethylbenzene (hmb); 3: arene=benzene (bz)), [RuCl(arene)((2)-TpBr3)] (4: arene=cym; 6: arene=bz), and [RuCl(arene)((2)-Tp(iPr,4Br))] (7: arene=cym, 8: arene=hmb, 9: arene=bz) have been always obtained with the exception of the ionic [Ru-2(hmb)(2)(-Cl)(3)][TpBr3] (5), which formed independently of the ratio of reactants and reaction conditions employed. The ionic [Ru(CH3OH)(cym)((2)-BpBr3)][X] (10: X=PF6, 12: X=O3SCF3) and the neutral [Ru(O2CCF3)(cym)((2)-BpBr3)] (11) have been obtained by a metathesis reaction with corresponding silver salts. All complexes 1-12 have been characterized by analytical and spectroscopic data (IR, ESI-MS, H-1 and (CNMR)-C-13 spectroscopy). The structures of the thallium and calcium derivatives of ligand TpBr3, [Tl(TpBr3)] and [Ca(dmso)(6)][TpBr3](2)2DMSO, of the complexes 1, 4, 5, 6, 11, and of the decomposition product [RuCl(cym)(Hpz(iPr,4Br))(2)][Cl] (7) have been confirmed by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical studies showed that 1-9 and 11 undergo a single-electron (RuRuIII)-Ru-II oxidation at a potential, measured by cyclic voltammetry, which allows comparison of the electron-donor characters of the bis- and tris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate and arene ligands, and to estimate, for the first time, the values of the Lever E-L ligand parameter for BpBr3, TpBr3, and Tp(iPr,4Br). Theoretical calculations at the DFT level indicated that both oxidation and reduction of the Ru complexes under study are mostly metal-centered with some involvement of the chloride ligand in the former case, and also demonstrated that the experimental isolation of the (3)-binuclear complex 5 (instead of the mononuclear 5) is accounted for by the low thermodynamic stability of the latter species due to steric reasons.

Pea-shoots are a new option as ready-to-eat baby-leaf vegetable. However, data about the nutritional composition and the shelf-life stability of these leaves, especially their phytonutrient composition is scarce. In this work, the macronutrient, micronutrient and phytonutrients profile of minimally processed pea shoots were evaluated at the beginning and at the end of a 10-day storage period. Several physicochemical characteristics (color, pH, total soluble solids, and total titratable acidity) were also monitored. Standard AOAC methods were applied in the nutritional value evaluation, while chromatographic methods with UV–vis and mass detection were used to analyze free forms of vitamins (HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS), carotenoids (HPLC-DAD-APCI-MSn) and flavonoid compounds (HPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn). Atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-AAS) was employed to characterize the mineral content of the leaves. As expected, pea leaves had a high water (91.5%) and low fat (0.3%) and carbohydrate (1.9%) contents, being a good source of dietary fiber (2.1%). Pea shoots showed a high content of vitamins C, E and A, potassium and phosphorous compared to other ready-to-eat green leafy vegetables. The carotenoid profile revealed a high content of β-carotene and lutein, typical from green leafy vegetables. The leaves had a mean flavonoid content of 329 mg/100 g of fresh product, mainly composed by glycosylated quercetin and kaempferol derivatives. Pea shoots kept their fresh appearance during the storage being color maintained throughout the shelf-life. The nutritional composition was in general stable during storage, showing some significant (p < 0.05) variation in certain water-soluble vitamins.

Sulfadimethoxine (SDM) is one of the drugs, often used in the aquaculture sector to prevent the spread of disease in freshwater fish aquaculture. Its spread through the soil and surface water can contribute to an increase in bacterial resistance. It is therefore important to control this product in the environment. This work proposes a simple and low-cost potentiometric device to monitor the levels of SDM in aquaculture waters, thus avoiding its unnecessary release throughout the environment. The device combines a micropipette tip with a PVC membrane selective to SDM, prepared from an appropriate cocktail, and an inner reference solution. The membrane includes 1% of a porphyrin derivative acting as ionophore and a small amount of a lipophilic cationic additive (corresponding to 0.2% in molar ratio). The composition of the inner solution was optimized with regard to the kind and/or concentration of primary ion, chelating agent and/or a specific interfering charged species, in different concentration ranges. Electrodes constructed with inner reference solutions of 1 × 10−8 mol/L SDM and 1 × 10−4 mol/L chromate ion showed the best analytical features. Near-Nernstian response was obtained with slopes of −54.1 mV/decade, an extraordinary detection limit of 7.5 ng/mL (2.4 × 10−8 mol/L) when compared with other electrodes of the same type. The reproducibility, stability and response time are good and even better than those obtained by liquid contact ISEs. Recovery values of 98.9% were obtained from the analysis of aquaculture water samples.

The purpose of this project is to understand if the brand Sagres is damaging the product Sagres Radler. The beer market in Portugal was studied and focus groups were used to perceive the impact of the brand in the product. The mother brand is bringing the beer association into a product designed to engage people that don’t like beer. With the insights, a new proposal was drawn and tested. Although it was not possible to prove that the new concept is better for the population, there are strong indications that the brand isn’t enabling the achievement of the proposed target.
