Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli etsiä menetelmiä, joiden avulla kyvykkyyksiä voidaan tunnistaa, mitata ja arvioida yrityksessä. Kyvykkyydet ovat tärkein tekijä yrityksen tulevaisuuden suorituskyvyn ja markkina-arvon kannalta. Tarkastelimme kahta menetelmää: Capabilities Auditia ja Balanced Scorecardia. Käsittelimme molempien menetelmien käyttämiä määritelmiä ja perusteita sekä vahvuuksia ja ongelmakohtia. Työssä tutkimme motiiveja ja mahdollisia ongelmia kyvykkyyksien tunnistamisessa ja mittaamisessa. Esittelimme lisäksi kaksi tapaa jaotella mittausmenetelmiä niiden ominaispiirteiden mukaan. Näitä menetelmiä käytimme myös Capabilities Auditin ja Balanced Scorecardin arvioinnissa. Työn tuloksena päädyimme yhdistämään tarkastelemamme menetelmät toimivaksi kokonaisuudeksi. Balanced Scorecardin avulla ei voida yksinään tunnistaa kyvykkyyksiä, joten tarvitaan menetelmä, jolla tunnistaminen tehdään. Capabilities Auditin tapaisen viitekehyksen käyttäminen Balanced Scorecardin oppimisen ja kasvun näkökulmaan liittyvien kyvykkyyksien tunnistamiseen, mittaamiseen ja arviointiin onkin mielestämme perusteltua.

Työn tarkoituksena on kuvata ja ymmärtää ylimmän johdon osaamista ja osaamisen strategista merkitystä osuustoimintayrityksen liiketoiminnassa. Tavoitteena on ymmärtää, millainen rooli osaamisella on osuustoimintayrityksen johtamisessa ja liiketoiminnassa sekä tutkia osuustoiminnallisten erityispiirteiden vaikutusta johtamiseen. Työ on luonteeltaan kvalitatiivinen, ja sen tutkimusaineisto koostuu S-ryhmän ylimmässä johdossa loka-joulukuussa 2007 tehdyistä teemahaastatteluista sekä kohdeorganisaation johtamista käsittelevistä kirjallisista dokumenteista. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että osaamisen strateginen rooli on kasvanut kohdeorganisaatiossa tasaisesti 1980-luvulta lähtien. Johtamisen osaamisvaatimukset ovat samaan aikaan kasvaneet ja monipuolistuneet. Erityisesti ihmisten johtamiseen sekä yritysverkoston johtamiseen liittyvän osaamisen merkityksen kasvu on ollut huomattava. Lisäksi tutkimus esittää väitteen, jonka mukaan yrityksen osuustoiminnalliset erityispiirteet vaikuttavat merkittävästi johdon osaamisvaatimuksiin.

Organizations gain resources, skills and technologies to find out the ultimate mix of capabilities to be a winner in the competitive market. These are all important factors that need to be taken into account in organizations operating in today's business environment. So far, there are no significant studies on the organizational capabilities in the field of PSM. The literature review shows that the PSM capabilities need to be studied more comprehensively. This study attempts to reveal and fill this gap by providing the PSM capability matrix that identifies the key PSM capabilities approached from two angles: there are three primary PSM capabilities and nine subcapabilities and, moreover, the individual and organizational PSM capabilities are identified and evaluated. The former refers to the PSM capability matrix of this study which is based on the strategic and operative PSM capabilities that complement the economic ones, while the latter relates to the evaluation of the PSM capabilities, such as the buyer profiles of individual PSM capabilities and the PSMcapability map of the organizational ones. This is a constructive case study. The aim is to define what the purchasing and supply management capabilities are and how they can be evaluated. This study presents a PSM capability matrix to identify and evaluate the capabilities to define capability gaps by comparing the ideal level of PSM capabilities to the realized ones. The research questions are investigated with two case organizations. This study argues that PSM capabilities can be classified into three primary categories with nine sub-categories and, thus, a PSM capability matrix with four evaluation categories can be formed. The buyer profiles are moreover identified to reveal the PSM capability gap. The resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities view (DCV) are used to define the individual and organizational capabilities. The PSM literature is also used to define the capabilities. The key findings of this study are i) the PSM capability matrix to identify the PSM capabilities, ii) the evaluation of the capabilities to define PSM capability gaps and iii) the presentation of the buyer profiles to identify the individual PSM capabilities and to define the organizational PSM capabilities. Dynamic capabilities are also related to the PSM capability gap. If a gap is identified, the organization can renew their PSM capabilities and, thus, create mutual learning and increase their organizational capabilities. And only then, there is potential for dynamic capabilities. Based on this, the purchasing strategy, purchasing policy and procedures should be identified and implemented dynamically.

Omistajalähtöisen kulttuurin voimistumisen myötä omistajaohjausjärjestelmät ovat nousseet merkittävään asemaan yritysten toiminnassa. Tämä tutkielma osallistuu omistajaohjauksesta käytävään akateemiseen ja liikkeenjohdolliseen keskusteluun. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on kuvata ja ymmärtää asiakasomisteisten osuuskauppojen omistajaohjaukseen liittyviä erityispiirteitä ja haasteita. Tutkimuksen tavoitteisiin pyritään vastaamaan analysoimalla tutkimusta varten kerättyä S-ryhmän alueosuuskauppojen hallintoneuvostojen puheenjohtajien haastatteluista (22 kpl) ja S-ryhmän julkaisemasta kirjallisesta materiaalista koostuvaa laadullista aineistoa. Tutkimuksen mukaan osuuskauppojen omistajaohjaus poikkeaa sijoittajaomisteisten yritysten omistajaohjauksesta paitsi hallintotapaan, rahoitukseen ja omistusoikeuksiin liittyvissä kysymyksissä, myös siinä, että osuuskaupoissa omistajakunta on passiivista, eikä aina edes tiedosta omistajuuttaan. Haasteita osuuskauppojen omistajaohjaukseen tuovat luottamushenkilöiden edustavuuteen ja osaamistasoon, tiedonkulkuun, omistajien lyhyen ja pitkän tähtäimen etujen tasapainottamiseen sekä liikkeenjohdon vallan korostumiseen liittyvät tekijät.

OBJETIVO: Selecionar os melhores algoritmos para o exame de coluna lombar na avaliação de artrodese com material metálico. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Utilizou-se um equipamento de tomografia computadorizada de 16 fileiras de detectores. Imagens de dez pacientes foram reconstruídas com filtros 20, 40, 60 e 80 e realizadas reformatações em três dimensões e multiplanares com espessuras de 2 mm e 4 mm. Um total de 320 imagens foi avaliado por três experientes radiologistas, que deram notas de 1 a 5 (1 = não-aceitável; 2 = abaixo dos padrões; 3 = aceitável; 4 = acima da média; 5 = excelente). Além disso, foram realizadas medidas de ruído para correlação com o tipo de filtro utilizado. RESULTADOS: As médias do valor de ruído para reconstrução com 2 mm e filtros 20, 40, 60 e 80 foram de 24,7 ± 4,3; 35,5 ± 4,2; 106,0 ± 18,5 e 145,9 ± 26,9, respectivamente, e para 4 mm foram de 18,1 ± 2,4; 25,1 ± 4,6; 76,7 ± 17,2 e 106,6 ± 23,4. CONCLUSÃO: As imagens coloridas em três dimensões são mais bem visualizadas com filtro 20, entretanto, nas imagens em tons de cinza um filtro intermediário de 40 ou 60 pode ser útil para demonstrar os parafusos com maior detalhe. Para reconstruções multiplanares com espessura de 2 mm o filtro 40 é mais bem aceito, e para uma espessura de 4 mm um filtro 60 apresentou melhor qualidade.

Durant els últims dos anys un grup d’estudiants de l’Escola Politècnica Superior de laUniversitat de Girona han construït i evolucionat un prototip per competir en la Shell EcoMarathon, una cursa de caràcter internacional que es celebra cada any a Nogaro (França) ia on l’objectiu primordial és aconseguir el mínim consum. Equips de diferents països delmón recorren amb els seus prototips la mateixa distància i el guanyador és qui en finalitzarhagi fet servir menys quantitat de combustible. La intenció de l’equip és continuar competint en aquest cursa durant els propers anys, peraquest motiu cada any es plantegen noves modificacions a realitzar per tal d’aconseguir unprototip més competitiu. Una de les modificacions consisteix en substituir les actuals llantesd’alumini equipades en el vehicle per unes llantes lenticulars fabricades en fibra de carboni.Aquestes llantes en material compòsit representen una millora en prestacions respecte lesllantes convencionals en reduir la inèrcia.Escollir la fibra de carboni com el material a emprar no ha estat a l’atzar. Els avantatges quecomporta la fibra de carboni en referència als rati rigidesa/pes i resistència/pes sónindiscutibles. La resistència a la fatiga d’aquest tipus de material és més elevada que la del’alumini, material utilitzat en les actuals llantes, a més, la voluntat d’entendre millor elcomportament i els processos de fabricació d’aquest material per part dels membres del’equip posicionen a la fibra de carboni com el material més idoni.La solució final adoptada pel disseny de les llantes consta per la unió adhesiva de duespeces iguals fabricades en fibra de carboni. La facilitat de poder fabricar dos “plats” simètricsresulta el punt fort d’aquest disseny, el qual, amb un únic motllo s’arriben a construir latotalitat de les llantes

L'estudi dels inventaris postmortem ens ha permès apropar-nos a la quotidianitat de taverners i hostalers que visqueren durant el segle XVII a la ciutat de Barcelona. Aquest tipus de document notarial ens deixa, entre d'altres, testimoni de la cultura material; els objectes, estris, mobles, robes... que ens poden ajudar a entendre diferents usos i costums, així com altres aspectes relacionats amb les mentalitats.

Fiber-reinforced composite as oral implant material: Experimental studies of glass fiber and bioactive glass in vitro and in vivo Department of Prosthetic Dentistry and Biomaterials Science, Institute of Dentistry, University of Turku, Turku, Finland 2008. Biocompatibility and mechanical properties are important variables that need to be determined when new materials are considered for medical implants. Special emphasis was placed on these characteristics in the present work, which aimed to investigate the potential of fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) material as an oral implant. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to explore the effect of bioactive glass (BAG) on osseointegration of FRC implants. The biocompatibility and mechanical properties of FRC implants were studied both in vitro and in vivo. The mechanical properties of the bulk FRC implant were tested with a cantilever bending test, torsional test and push-out test. The biocompatibility was first evaluated with osteoblast cells cultured on FRC substrates. Bone bonding was determined with the mechanical push-out test and histological as well as histomorplanimetric evaluation. Implant surface was characterized with SEM and EDS analysis. The results of these studies showed that FRC implants can withstand the static load values comparably to titanium. Threaded FRC implants had significantly higher push-out strength than the threaded titanium implants. Cell culture study revealed no cytotoxic effect of FRC materials on the osteoblast-like-cells. Addition of BAG particles enhanced cell proliferation and mineralization of the FRC substrates The in vivo study showed that FRC implants can withstand static loading until failure without fracture. The results also suggest that the FRC implant is biocompatible in bone. The biological behavior of FRC was comparable to that of titanium after 4 and 12 weeks of implantation. Furthermore, addition of BAG to FRC implant increases peri-implant osteogenesis and bone maturation.

The main goal of this paper is to obtain a granular material formulated with Municipal Solid Waste Incinerarion (MSWI) bottom ash (BA) and air pollution control (APC) ash to be used as secondary building material. Previously, an optimum concrete mixture using both MSWI residues as aggregates was formulated. A compromise between the environmental behaviour and the economy of the process was considered. Unconfined compressive strength and abrasion resistance values were measured in order to evaluate the mechanical properties. From these results, the granular mixture was not suited for certain applications owing to the high BA/APC content and low cement percentages used to reduce the costs of the final product. Nevertheless, the leaching test performed showed that the concentrations of all heavy metals were below the limits established by the current Catalan legislation for their reutilization. Therefore, the material studied might be mainly used in embankments, where high mechanical properties are not needed and environmental safety is assured.

Abstract Objective: To propose a protocol for pulmonary angiography using 64-slice multidetector computed tomography (64-MDCT) with 50 mL of iodinated contrast material, in an unselected patient population, as well as to evaluate vascular enhancement and image quality. Materials and Methods: We evaluated 29 patients (22-86 years of age). The body mass index ranged from 19.0 kg/m2 to 41.8 kg/m2. Patients underwent pulmonary CT angiography in a 64-MDCT scanner, receiving 50 mL of iodinated contrast material via venous access at a rate of 4.5 mL/s. Bolus tracking was applied in the superior vena cava. Two experienced radiologists assessed image quality and vascular enhancement. Results: The mean density was 382 Hounsfield units (HU) for the pulmonary trunk; 379 and 377 HU for the right and left main pulmonary arteries, respectively; and 346 and 364 HU for the right and left inferior pulmonary arteries, respectively. In all patients, subsegmental arteries were analyzed. There were streak artifacts from contrast material in the superior vena cava in all patients. However, those artifacts did not impair the image analysis. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that pulmonary angiography using 64-MDCT with 50 mL of iodinated contrast can produce high quality images in unselected patient populations.

It was identified and quantified several organic compounds in the atmosphere of a site into Amazon Basin with high impact of biomass burning emission. It was important to know the particulate matter composition with respect to n-alkanes and PAH associated with the particulate matter because they provided indication on the main sources contributing to airborne particles, the contribution of natural vs. man-made emission and the aging of the particles. The main classes of compounds observed were n-alkanes, PAH and nitro-PAH. It was observed the formation of nitro-PAH from photochemical reactions. The aerosol mass concentration is mainly associated with fluoranthene, pyrene and benzo(ghi)perylene. Environmental and direct emissions samples (flaming and smoldering) were collected and analysed.

Purchasing and supply management (PSM) has become increasingly important for companies to survive in current highly competitive market. Increased outsourcing has extended the role of PSM, making external resource management and supplier relationships critical success factors in business. However, the recent research has mainly concentrated on large enterprises. Therefore the PSM issues related to medium-sized enterprises represent a significant research area. The thesis aims to explore the status and role of PSM in Finnish medium-sized firms, understand how strategic companies consider PSM to be, clarify what are the competence requirements for PSM professionals, and increase the understanding of PSM capabilities needed from the points view of individual competence and organisational capabilities. The study uses data that was collected in 2007 from purchasing executives at the director/CEO level representing a sample of 94 Finnish firms. 54 % of the respondent enterprises had a supply strategy. The total supply cost was on average 60 % of firms' turnover. Centralisation of PSM and outsourcing of logistics will increase in Finnish medium-sized enterprises. The findings point out that Finnish medium-sized enterprises had strategical features of PSM. However, Finnish firms have not concentrated on making strategies that relate to PSM. The elements that explain the existence of a supply strategy could be found in this study. It can be concluded from this study that there is an advantageous base for the development of strategic PSM, because nearly all the enterprises were of the opinion that PSM capabilities have an effect on business success. When reviewing the organisational capabilities, the five most important development elements were supplier relationships, both operational and strategic processes, time management, and personnel's competence. Training in internationalisation, strategic management, and communication could help to improve competences of PSM personnel.

This paper describes variations in the profile of the main volatile organic compounds present in Brazilian sugar cane spirits distilled in copper and stainless steel distillers. The main organic compounds: aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, alcohols and esters, were determined through High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and High Resolution Gas Cromatography (HRGC). The spirits produced in copper distillers exhibit higher contents of aldehydes with respect to the ones produced in stainless steel. The inverse is true with respect to the higher alcohol and ester contents. No significant variation has been observed for the carboxylic acids.
