No presente estudo investigamos as relações interpessoais humanas. Especificamente buscamos com ele, replicar parcialmente o trabalho de Stiller e Dunbar (2007) usando o mesmo instrumento, porém utilizando outro tipo de amostra. O objetivo principal foi verificar se as redes sociais desses estudantes estão de acordo com a Hipótese do Cérebro Social, segundo a qual seres humanos seriam capazes de manter e administrar um determinado número de relações interpessoais, por volta de 150 pessoas. Encontramos uma média de 52,53 contatos sociais, inferior ao predito pela Hipótese, despendendo com esses cerca de 25% do seu tempo. Houve correlações significativas entre as variáveis Tamanho da rede social, Freqüência, Tempo de contato, Proximidade Emocional e Coeficiente de parentesco, na rede social em geral, na rede de parentes e na rede de amigos. Em todos os casos, mesmo com a disponibilidade de tecnologias de comunicação à longa distância, os respondentes preferiram contatos face-a-face com os membros da rede social. Discutimos os resultados a partir de quatro hipóteses que não são mutuamente exclusivas. Por outro lado, foram confirmadas hipóteses secundárias, sobre a composição das redes sociais e sobre a interação entre Tamanho da rede, Freqüência e Tempo de Interações e Proximidade emocional. Estudos adicionais são necessários para esclarecer as diferenças encontradas, bem como a influência de outras variáveis que possam aumentar a compreensão das redes sociais.

Desenvolvemos a modelagem numérica de dados sintéticos Marine Controlled Source Electromagnetic (MCSEM) usada na exploração de hidrocarbonetos para simples modelos tridimensionais usando computação paralela. Os modelos são constituidos de duas camadas estrati cadas: o mar e o sedimentos encaixantes de um delgado reservatório tridimensional, sobrepostas pelo semi-espaço correspondente ao ar. Neste Trabalho apresentamos uma abordagem tridimensional da técnica dos elementos nitos aplicada ao método MCSEM, usando a formulação da decomposição primária e secundária dos potenciais acoplados magnético e elétrico. Num pós-processamento, os campos eletromagnéticos são calculados a partir dos potenciais espalhados via diferenciação numérica. Exploramos o paralelismo dos dados MCSEM 3D em um levantamento multitransmissor, em que para cada posição do transmissor temos o mesmo processo de cálculos com dados diferentes. Para isso, usamos a biblioteca Message Passing Interface (MPI) e o modelo servidor cliente, onde o processador administrador envia os dados de entradas para os processadores clientes computar a modelagem. Os dados de entrada são formados pelos parâmetros da malha de elementos nitos, dos transmissores e do modelo geoelétrico do reservatório. Esse possui geometria prismática que representa lentes de reservatórios de hidrocarbonetos em águas profundas. Observamos que quando a largura e o comprimento horizontais desses reservatório têm a mesma ordem de grandeza, as resposta in-line são muito semelhantes e conseqüentemente o efeito tridimensional não é detectado. Por sua vez, quando a diferença nos tamanhos da largura e do comprimento do reservatório é signi cativa o efeito 3D é facilmente detectado em medidas in-line na maior dimensão horizontal do reservatório. Para medidas na menor dimensão esse efeito não é detectável, pois, nesse caso o modelo 3D se aproxima de um modelo bidimensional. O paralelismo dos dados é de rápida implementação e processamento. O tempo de execução para a modelagem multitransmissor em ambiente paralelo é equivalente ao tempo de processamento da modelagem para um único transmissor em uma máquina seqüêncial, com o acréscimo do tempo de latência na transmissão de dados entre os nós do cluster, o que justi ca o uso desta metodologia na modelagem e interpretação de dados MCSEM. Devido a reduzida memória (2 Gbytes) em cada processador do cluster do departamento de geofísica da UFPA, apenas modelos muito simples foram executados.

This study tested the fluoride-release rate and the root caries inhibitory effect of dental adhesives. In phase 1, the fluoride released from samples (n = 5) of the adhesives A (Optibond Solo), B (One-up Bond F), C (Prime & Bond NT), D (Tenure Quick), and also of the controls [+] (glass-ionomer cement) and [-] (non-fluoride releasing adhesive), was quantified on a daily basis during a pH-cycling, caries-simulating phenomenon. In phase 2, restorations were made in bovine root dentine slabs (n = 16) with the same adhesives associated with a non-fluoridated composite. Control [+] restorations were made entirely with glass-ionomer cement. Specimens were thermocycled and submitted to the pH-cycling regimen. Demineralization areas and the presence of the wall lesion (WL) and the inhibition zone (IZ) were determined by polarizing light microscopy in dentine adjacent to the restoration. The highest concentration of fluoride was released by the control [+]; adhesives A, B and C, also released fluoride. No detectable amount of fluoride was released by D or [-]. Smaller areas of demineralization were found with control [+], whereas the demineralization areas of adhesives A-D and [-] did not differ from each other. No WL was detected, and higher percentages of IZ were recorded to [+] and to adhesive A. Although some dental adhesives were able to release fluoride, they could not inhibit secondary caries development as well as the glass-ionomer cement.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of complementary heat treatment and water storage in reducing cytotoxicity of acrylic resins denture bases used in Brazil by the MTT assay. Material and Methods: First, nine specimens were fabricated from metal matrix in the form of discs with 14 mm in diameter and 1.2 mm of thick. Immediately after making, 24 or 48 hours after storage in distilled water, the samples of heat-polymerized resins were divided into 3 groups (n = 3) according to the type of thermal treatment: Group 1: samples were individually exposed to microwave energy (500 W for 3 minutes); Group 2: samples were immersed in water at 550 C for 60 minutes; Group 3: samples did not receive heat treatment. To prepare the extracts, 3 samples of each group were placed into vials containing 3 mL of culture medium and stored at 37°C for 24 hours. L929 cells were used and the MTT assay was performed to analyze the cellular metabolism. Two-factor analysis of variance was used to detect significant among groups at 5% significance. Results: After statistical analysis, the materials were classified according to the cytotoxic effect: non-cytotoxic, slightly cytotoxic; moderately cytotoxic; and strongly cytotoxic. The results showed that the resins ranged from moderately cytotoxic to non-cytotoxic, but no statistically significant difference among experimental groups. Furthermore, the water storage and thermal treatments reduced the cytotoxicity of the resins. Conclusions: It was concluded that the resins studied are potentially toxic and that treatments can decrease their cytotoxicity.

Forest plantations with Eucalyptus spp. (L'H,r) in Brazil are highly yielding. However, this activity is more and more threatened due to interactions with phytophagous insects, especially by exotic species, such as the red gum lerp psyllid Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Hemiptera: Psyllidae). This study aimed to evaluate the resistance in eucalyptus against the psyllid in oviposition and biological development assays, attempting to identify potential genotypes resistant to the pest for forest plantations. In addition, we tested the hypothesis of that concentration of total phenolics and lignin, and amount of epicuticular wax were associated with the expression of resistance. Results showed that there was variation in the levels of resistance among the genotypes assessed. Oviposition non-preference was observed on Eucalyptus citriodora (Hook) in free-choice and no-choice tests, and Clone FP10 was least preferred in the no-choice test. The genotypes E. citriodora and Clone FP6 provided 100 % nymphal mortality, and Clones FP7 and FP9 also affected negatively the G. brimblecombei development by lengthening the duration of the nymphal stage and reducing adult emergence. Clone FP6 had higher concentration of total phenolics and larger contact angle formed between the water droplet and leaf surface, which may be associated with thicker layer of epicuticular wax on the leaves, and one of the causes of high nymphal mortality. Thus, the use of the resistant genotypes of eucalyptus screened against G. brimblecombei is a promising and viable alternative for forest plantations infested with this pest.

Aspergillosis is caused by fungus of Aspergillus genus. Is a multifactorial secondary disease and occurs mainly to immunodeficiency. Goiter is the name to non-inflammatory and non-neoplasic thyroid growth which affecting the animal metabolism. In this report we describe a case of aspergillosis and colloidal goiter in a male Black-masked lovebird (Agapornis personata) diagnosed by post mortem exam. The bird was presented for examination due to severe respiratory signs. An initial palliative treatment was performed in order to relieve the symptoms. Despite this, the patient came to die without performing additional ancillary tests. On gross exam, a pulmonary nodule was observed from which we were able to isolate Aspergillus fumigatus on microbial culture. Histological assessment revealed pulmonary aspergilosis and colloid goiter. Based on histopathological and microbiological assessments we conclude that infection probably was secondary to colloid goiter.

The use of stones to crack open encapsulated fruit is widespread among wild bearded capuchin monkeys (Cebus libidinosus) inhabiting savanna-like environments. Some populations in Serra da Capivara National Park (Piaui, Brazil), though, exhibit a seemingly broader toolkit, using wooden sticks as probes, and employing stone tools for a variety of purposes. Over the course of 701.5 hr of visual contact of two wild capuchin groups we recorded 677 tool use episodes. Five hundred and seventeen of these involved the use of stones, and 160 involved the use of sticks (or other plant parts) as probes to access water, arthropods, or the contents of insects` nests. Stones were mostly used as ""hammers""-not only to open fruit or seeds, or smash other food items, but also to break dead wood, conglomerate rock, or cement in search of arthropods, to dislodge bigger stones, and to pulverize embedded quartz pebbles (licking, sniffing, or rubbing the body with the powder produced). Stones also were used in a ""hammer-like"" fashion to loosen the soil for digging out roots and arthropods, and sometimes as ""hoes"" to pull the loosened soil. In a few cases, we observed the re-utilization of stone tools for different purposes (N = 3), or the combined use of two tools-stones and sticks (N = 4) or two stones (N = 5), as sequential or associative tools. On three occasions, the monkeys used smaller stones to loosen bigger quartz pebbles embedded in conglomerate rock, which were subsequently used as tools. Objective: To evaluate the anatomical and functional renal alterations and the association with post-traumatic arterial hypertension. Methods: The studied population included patients who sustained high grades renal injury (grades III to V) successfully non-operative management after staging by computed tomography over a 16-year period. Beyond the review of medical records, these patients were invited to the following protocol: clinical and laboratory evaluation, abdominal computed tomography, magnetic resonance angiography, DMSA renal scintigraphy, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. The hypertensive patients also were submitted to dynamic renal scintigraphy (Tc-99m EC), using captopril stimulation to verify renal vascular etiology. Results: Of the 31 patients, there were thirteen grade III, sixteen grade IV (nine lacerations, and seven vascular lesions), and two grade V injuries. All the patients were asymptomatic and an average follow up post-injury of 6.4 years. None had abnormal BUN or seric creatinine. The percentage of renal volume reduction correlates with the severity as defined by OIS. There was no evidence of renal artery stenosis in Magnetic Resonance angiography (MRA). DMSA scanning demonstrated a decline in percentage of total renal function corresponding to injury severity (42.2 +/- 5.5% for grade III, 35.3 +/- 12.8% for grade IV, 13.5 +/- 19.1 for grade V). Six patients (19.4%) had severe compromised function (< 30%). There was statistically significant difference in the decrease in renal function between parenchymal and vascular causes for grade IV injuries (p < 0.001). The 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring detected nine patients (29%) with post-traumatic hypertension. All the patients were male, mean 35.6 years, 77.8 % had a familial history of arterial hypertension, 66.7% had grade III renal injury, and average post-injury time was 7.8 years. Seven patients had negative captopril renography. Conclusions: Late results of renal function after conservative treatment of high grades renal injuries are favorable, except for patients with grades IV with vascular injuries and grade V renal injuries. Moreover, arterial hypertension does not correlate with the grade of renal injury or reduction of renal function.
