This paper presents a numerical technique for the design of an RF coil for asymmetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. The formulation is based on an inverse approach where the cylindrical surface currents are expressed in terms of a combination of sub-domain basis functions: triangular and pulse functions. With the homogeneous transverse magnetic field specified in a spherical region, a functional method is applied to obtain the unknown current coefficients. The current distribution is then transformed to a conductor pattern by use of a stream function technique. Preliminary MR images acquired using a prototype RF coil are presented and validate the design method. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The mechanism of growth of silicate films at the air/liquid interface has been investigated in situ by a series of grazing incidence diffraction experiments using a 20 x 25 cm(2) imaging plate as the detector. C(18)TAX (X = Br- or Cl-) has been used as the film templating surfactant. The formation of a layered phase, prior to growth of the hexagonal mesophase in C(18)TABr templated films. has been seen. This layered structure has a significantly shorter d spacing compared to the final hexagonal film (43 versus 48 Angstrom, respectively). The correlation lengths associated with the development of the hexagonal in-plane diffraction spots are much longer in-plane than perpendicular to the air/liquid interface (300 Angstrom versus 50 Angstrom). This implies that the film forms via the growth or aggregation of islands that are initially only a micelle or two thick. which then grow down into the solution.

A rapid spherical harmonic calculation method is used for the design of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance shim coils. The aim is to design each shim such that it generates a field described purely by a single spherical harmonic. By applying simulated annealing techniques, coil arrangements are produced through the optimal positioning of current-carrying circular arc conductors of rectangular cross-section. This involves minimizing the undesirable harmonies in relation to a target harmonic. The design method is flexible enough to be applied for the production of coil arrangements that generate fields consisting significantly of either zonal or tesseral harmonics. Results are presented for several coil designs which generate tesseral harmonics of degree one.

Ecological interface design (EID) is proving to be a promising approach to the design of interfaces for complex dynamic systems. Although the principles of EID and examples of its effective use are widely available, few readily available examples exist of how the individual displays that constitute an ecological interface are developed. This paper presents the semantic mapping process within EID in the context of prior theoretical work in this area. The semantic mapping process that was used in developing an ecological interface for the Pasteurizer II microworld is outlined, and the results of an evaluation of the ecological interface against a more conventional interface are briefly presented. Subjective reports indicate features of the ecological interface that made it particularly valuable for participants. Finally, we outline the steps of an analytic process for using EID. The findings presented here can be applied in the design of ecological interfaces or of configural displays for dynamic processes.

The development of structure perpendicular to and in the plane of the interface has been studied for mesoporous silicate films self-assembled at the air/water interface. The use of constrained X-ray and neutron specular reflectometry has enabled a detailed study of the structural development perpendicular to the interface during the pre-growth phase. Off-specular neutron reflectometry and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction has enabled the in-plane structure to be probed with excellent time resolution. The growth mechanism under the surfactant to silicate source ratios used in this work is clearly due to the self-assembly of micellar and molecular species at the air/liquid interface, resulting in the formation of a planar mesoporous film that is tens of microns thick. Common sense tells us that the future is an essential element in any strategy. In addition, there is a good deal of literature on scenario planning, which is an important tool in considering the future in terms of strategy. However, in many organizations there is serious resistance to the development of scenarios, and they are not broadly implemented by companies. But even organizations that do not rely heavily on the development of scenarios do, in fact, construct visions to guide their strategies. But it might be asked, what happens when this vision is not consistent with the future? To address this problem, the present article proposes a method for checking the content and consistency of an organization`s vision of the future, no matter how it was conceived. The proposed method is grounded on theoretical concepts from the field of future studies, which are described in this article. This study was motivated by the search for developing new ways of improving and using scenario techniques as a method for making strategic decisions. The method was then tested on a company in the field of information technology in order to check its operational feasibility. The test showed that the proposed method is, in fact, operationally feasible and was capable of analyzing the vision of the company being studied, indicating both its shortcomings and points of inconsistency. in the Apis mellifera post-genomic era, RNAi protocols have been used in functional approaches. However, sample manipulation and invasive methods such as injection of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) can compromise physiology and survival. To circumvent these problems, we developed a non-invasive method for honeybee gene knockdown, using a well-established vitellogenin RNAi system as a model. Second instar larvae received dsRNA for vitellogenin (dsVg-RNA) in their natural diet. For exogenous control, larvae received dsRNA for GFP (dsGFP-RNA). Untreated larvae formed another control group. Around 60% of the treated larvae naturally developed until adult emergence when 0.5 mu g of dsVg-RNA or dsGFP-RNA was offered while no larvae that received 3.0 mu g of dsRNA reached pupal stages. Diet dilution did not affect the removal rates. Viability depends not only on the delivered doses but also on the internal conditions of colonies. The weight of treated and untreated groups showed no statistical differences. This showed that RNAi ingestion did not elicit drastic collateral effects. Approximately 90% of vitellogenin transcripts from 7-day-old workers were silenced compared to controls. A large number of samples are handled in a relatively short time and smaller quantities of RNAi molecules are used compared to invasive methods. Pt-Sn electrocatalysts of different compositions were prepared and dispersed on carbon Vulcan XC-72 using the Pechini-Adams method. The catalysts were characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical properties of these electrode materials were also examined by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometric experiments in acid medium. The results showed that the presence of Sn greatly enhances the activity of Pt towards the electrooxidation of ethanol. Moreover, it contributes to reduce the amount of noble metal in the anode of direct alcohol fuel cells, which remains one of the challenges to make the technology of direct alcohol fuel cells possible. Electrolysis of ethanol solutions at 0.55 V vs. RHE allowed to determine by liquid chromatography acetaldehyde and acetic acid as the main reaction products. CO(2) was also analyzed after trapping it in a NaOH solution indicating that the cleavage of the C-C bond in the ethanol molecule did occur during the adsorption process. In situ IR reflectance spectroscopy helped to investigate in more details the reaction mechanism through the identification of the reaction products as well as the presence of some intermediate adsorbed species, such as linearly bonded carbon monoxide. Different stoichiometries are observed between alpha and beta subunits of Na,K-ATPase that depend on the method employed to solubilize and purify the enzyme. It is not known whether this variability is due to loss of protein-protein association, or is a result of the replacement of essential phospholipids by detergent molecules. With the aim of understanding the effect of enzyme/surfactant ratio on both the catalytic activity and the enzyme structure, we have investigated the bulk and surface properties of the enzyme. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra, surface tension and dilatational surface elasticity results were compared with the residual ATPase activity of the Na,K-ATPase in different surfactant and protein concentrations. Na,K-ATPase in the (alpha beta)(2) form dissociated to the alpha beta form on dilution, and associated to the (alpha beta)(4) form when concentrated. These different stoichiometries have similar ATPase activities and are in equilibrium at C(12)E(8) concentrations below the CIVIC (0.053 mg mL(-1)). At detergent concentrations above the CIVIC the ATPase activity of all forms was abolished, which is concomitant with the dissociation of the a and subunits. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. The artificial chaperone method for protein refolding developed by Rozema et al. (Rozema, D.; Gellman, S. H. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1995, 117 (8), 2373-2374) involves the sequential dilution of denatured protein into a buffer containing detergent (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) and then into a refolding buffer containing cyclodextrin WD). In this paper a simplified one-step artificial chaperone method is reported, whereby CTAB is added directly to the denatured solution, which is then diluted directly into a refolding buffer containing P-cyclodextrin (P-CD). This new method can be applied at high protein concentrations, resulting in smaller processing volumes and a more concentrated protein solution following refolding. The increase in achievable protein concentration results from the enhanced solubility of CTAB at elevated temperatures in concentrated denaturant. The refolding yields obtained for the new method were significantly higher than for control experiments lacking additives and were comparable to the yields obtained with the classical two-step approach. A study of the effect of beta-CD and CTAB concentrations on refolding yield suggested two operational regimes: slow stripping ( beta-CDXTABsimilar to1), most suited for higher protein concentrations, and fast stripping (beta-CD/CTABsimilar to2.7), best suited for lower protein concentrations. An increased chaotrope concentration resulted in higher refolding yields and an enlarged operational regime.

Preparation methods can profoundly affect the structural and electrochemical properties of electrocatalytic coatings. In this investigation, RuO(2)-Ta(2)O(5) thin films containing between 10 and 90 at.% Ru were prepared by the Pechini-Adams method. These coatings were electrochemically and physically characterized by cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The composition and morphology of the oxide were investigated before and after accelerated life tests (ALT) by EDX and SEM. SEM results indicate typical mud-flat-cracking morphology for the majority of the films. High resolution SEMs reveal that pure oxide phases exhibit nanoporosity while binary compositions display a very compact structure. EDX analyses reveal considerable amounts of Ru in the coating even after total deactivation. XRD indicated a rutile-type structure for RuO(2) and orthorhombic structure for Ta(2)O(5). XPS data demonstrate that the binding energy of Ta is affected by Ru addition in the thin films, but the binding energy of Ru is not likewise influenced by Ta. The stability of the electrodes was evaluated by ALT performed at 750 mA cm(-2) in 80 degrees C 0.5 mol dm(-3) H(2)SO(4). The performance of electrodes prepared by the Pechini-Adams method is 100% better than that of electrodes prepared by standard thermal decomposition.

A glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored enzyme (rat osseous plate alkaline phosphatase-OAP) was studied as monolayer (pure and mixed with lipids) at the air-water interface. Surface pressure and surface potential-area isotherms showed that the enzyme forms a stable monolayer and exhibits a liquid-expanded state even at surface pressure as high as 30 mN m(-1). Isotherms for mixed dimyristoylphosphatidic acid (DMPA)-OAP monolayer showed the absence of a liquid-expanded/liquid-condensed phase transition as observed for pure DMPA monolayer. In both cases, pure or mixed monolayer, the enzyme preserves its native conformation under compression at the air-water interface as observed from in situ p-polarized light Fourier transform-infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopic (FT-IRRAS) measurements. Changes in orientation and conformation of the enzyme due to the presence or absence of DMPA, as well as due to the surface compression, are discussed. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc.

A modification of the Pechini method was applied to obtain luminescent rare earth orthophosphates. The developed synthetic route is based on the ability of the tripolyphosphate anion (P3O105-) to act both as a complexing agent and as an orthophosphate precursor. Heating of aqueous solutions containing RE3+, Eu3+, P3O105-, citric acid, and ethylene glycol led to polymeric resins. The ignition of these resins at different temperatures yielded luminescent orthophosphates. The produced nanosized phosphors (YPO4:Eu3+, (Y,Gd)PO4:Eu3+, and LaPO4:Eu3+) were analyzed by infrared and luminescence spectroscopies, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy.
