ABSTRACT The Ph.D. thesis address the lack of a protocol capable to link the higher expectations regarding daylighting of the singular architecture practice with the available daylighting calculation tools and metrics. The thesis question is as follows: “Is it possible to define a protocol capable to arrange the design and calculation decisions needed to be made to solve a daylighting problem for a singular architecture project, as a process, in a way as generic as operational, by building daylighting related knowledge in each step of it?” Methodologically the research is developed in two linked stages: first the protocol is scientifically DEFINED and then its APPLICABILITY is tested. The protocol is built up by using the inductive method over a group of previously solved daylighting projects provided by the thesis author. Those projects has been systematically analyzed by applying some reduction and synthesis strategies, which leads to a preliminary protocol formulation. Once the protocol is fully formulated under the name of “DAYLIGHTING CANVAS”, its applicability is assessed by direct experimentation, done through three different experiments. In the first one the applicability to a complex problem is assessed; in the second one its applicability to non predicted daylighting problems; and finally its applicability for different users.

ABSTRACT The idea of giving housing the height of the patio housing qualities, it has been studied for ages. It can be said that the origin of this analysis was started in 1922, when Le Cobustier began investigating about The Villa Building: obviously it is known nowadays due to different architect’s labor of searching through the history. It’s easy to say that all the cases shape a single project idea , the idea of gathering patio houses with the same height keeping the inner characteristics of traditional patio houses such privacy, free space, zenithal opening, inside –outside communication…etc. If we thought about the traditional concept of patio, to define it, in the case of gathering because of the height, it is not suitable to consider it like a pile of houses with the same height. Nevertheless the concept of patio allows a wide variety of settlements. Its worth is based on the transference of a renowned idea into a new context, producing thus a reformulation of the problem. The patio is frequently disposed like a zone with multiple utilities, from the leisure zone patio to an air circulating space, definitively it can be said that it consists on a space which is able to content a place. Maybe that is why it appears in various forms in our architecture, regardless of its placement or shape. It is simply a space which provides many features which are impossible to reach without it. That is what we know as patio house is a type of architecture which is spread till antiquity. This concept of outdoors space joined housing is one of the main pieces of our architecture. It is an idea wide analyses which lefts aside the different types of patios which were developed, focusing mainly the way they changed the idea of inhabiting. We have chosen for this analysis process, the collective housing, we understood collective like group, thus it is the group of housing responsible to built up a city, not just it is worth to give importance to an independent cell, in addition to the relation which those ones can stablish with their similar ones. Due to the idea of collectivity of patio houses, it can be also developed in vertical, looking for the previously mention condition. A wish which appeared with the modern movement and since then it has been something desired by architecture just nowadays. It is understood as the main target to follow the trail about a project investigation which was begun and left open by Le Cobustier: the task is discovering the resonances, the bounces and repercussions which belong to the patio concept in height through its history. In this quest to distinguish the characteristics of these spaces, we have chosen three cases, starting from the experiences as traditional patios as in the height of patios of the masters such as Le Cobustier, Jose Luis Sert and Charles Correa. The studied cases could be even more. This number is just an example of a huger universe, which has been operational for the developing of this work. We will be managed through their architecture trying to solve the idea of patios according to their height. Over this analysis evidences there are found multiple mechanics used in the studied cases. As we could see later, in these ones there are characteristics which are only found in an outdoors space when it is a patio. The studied patios are considered traditional patios, independently of the level they have, although they do not fit at first some of the necessary characteristics included in a patio definition. To catch the essence of those spaces, it is not necessary to go through its limits, since it is transmitted to the interior and pervades the adjoining spaces. It has been analyzed the project influences exiting among several cases which build up part of this consideration , among them there are some clear links, which may be these keys we are looking for to solve the joint of patio houses in height. With this work it has been highlighted that the application of the patios houses in height concept depends not only on its placement, the weather and the local culture, but also on the type of patio we are using. From these considerations different solutions were given by themselves as consequence they can be extrapolated into a single idea for all the cases. Some ideas are present along the complete investigation: facades resulting from cells repetition, series of spaces, traditional patio house floor, double height… Some other cases stand out due to it singularity, because they have searched for a solution to the problem by means of originality. To sum up, we look for patio houses in height. And if this thesis contributes, in some way, to get the clues to make work this type of building, about its characteristics, its necessities and its result, in other words, its searching of this modern desire that we showed at the beginning, then this imaginary typo will be a real architecture therefore it can also come truth and can abandon the form of wish to became into a reality. So the modern desire has been fulfilled.

I present results from an experiment on the dynamics of folding of a globular protein (bovine serum albumin). Employing a micro-mechanical technique, I perform the measurements on very few molecules (1–100). I observed a sequence of steps in time for both unfolding and refolding. The overall characteristic time of the process is thus built up of waiting times between successive steps. The pattern of steps is reproducible, demonstrating the existence of deterministic pathways for folding and unfolding. Certain symmetries in the patterns of steps may reflect the architecture of the protein’s structure.

By evoking changes in climbing fiber activity, movement errors are thought to modify synapses from parallel fibers onto Purkinje cells (pf*Pkj) so as to improve subsequent motor performance. Theoretical arguments suggest there is an intrinsic tradeoff, however, between motor adaptation and long-term storage. Assuming a baseline rate of motor errors is always present, then repeated performance of any learned movement will generate a series of climbing fiber-mediated corrections. By reshuffling the synaptic weights responsible for any given movement, such corrections will degrade the memories for other learned movements stored in overlapping sets of synapses. The present paper shows that long-term storage can be accomplished by a second site of plasticity at synapses from parallel fibers onto stellate/basket interneurons (pf*St/Bk). Plasticity at pf*St/Bk synapses can be insulated from ongoing fluctuations in climbing fiber activity by assuming that changes in pf*St/Bk synapses occur only after changes in pf*Pkj synapses have built up to a threshold level. Although climbing fiber-dependent plasticity at pf*Pkj synapses allows for the exploration of novel motor strategies in response to changing environmental conditions, plasticity at pf*St/Bk synapses transfers successful strategies to stable long-term storage. To quantify this hypothesis, both sites of plasticity are incorporated into a dynamical model of the cerebellar cortex and its interactions with the inferior olive. When used to simulate idealized motor conditioning trials, the model predicts that plasticity develops first at pf*Pkj synapses, but with additional training is transferred to pf*St/Bk synapses for long-term storage.

Humans transformed Western Atlantic coastal marine ecosystems before modern ecological investigations began. Paleoecological, archeological, and historical reconstructions demonstrate incredible losses of large vertebrates and oysters from the entire Atlantic coast. Untold millions of large fishes, sharks, sea turtles, and manatees were removed from the Caribbean in the 17th to 19th centuries. Recent collapses of reef corals and seagrasses are due ultimately to losses of these large consumers as much as to more recent changes in climate, eutrophication, or outbreaks of disease. Overfishing in the 19th century reduced vast beds of oysters in Chesapeake Bay and other estuaries to a few percent of pristine abundances and promoted eutrophication. Mechanized harvesting of bottom fishes like cod set off a series of trophic cascades that eliminated kelp forests and then brought them back again as fishers fished their way down food webs to small invertebrates. Lastly, but most pervasively, mechanized harvesting of the entire continental shelf decimated large, long-lived fishes and destroyed three-dimensional habitats built up by sessile corals, bryozoans, and sponges. The universal pattern of losses demonstrates that no coastal ecosystem is pristine and few wild fisheries are sustainable along the entire Western Atlantic coast. Reconstructions of ecosystems lost only a century or two ago demonstrate attainable goals of establishing large and effective marine reserves if society is willing to pay the costs. Historical reconstructions provide a new scientific framework for manipulative experiments at the ecosystem scale to explore the feasibility and benefits of protection of our living coastal resources.

In patients with rheumatoid arthritis the synovial membrane of the affected joint is infiltrated with lymphoid cells which may be arranged in structures resembling germinal centers. We have directly isolated such infiltrates to determine whether B-cell clones within them are selected and expanded in a process analogous to that which normally takes place in the germinal centers in secondary lymphoid organs. The data suggest that an antigen-driven process leads to the accumulation of B cells in the synovial membrane. The finding of identical sequences in consecutive sections suggests that under conditions of chronic stimulation, memory B cells may enter a stage of differentiation in which they proliferate without further accumulation of somatic mutations. Further we see intraclonal diversity which underlines the germinal center-like character of these infiltrates and demonstrates that a microenvironment is built up in this nonlymphoid tissue which supports antigen-dependent differentiation of B cells. This is the first demonstration, to our knowledge, of a germinal center-like reaction outside lymphoid tissue.

This work reports on the synthesis of nanosheets of layered titanosilicate JDF-L1 supported on commercial E-type glass fibers with the aim of developing novel nanoarchitectures useful as robust and easy to handle hydrogen adsorbents. The preparation of those materials is carried out by hydrothermal reaction from the corresponding gel precursor in the presence of the glass support. Because of the basic character of the synthesis media, silica from the silicate-based glass fibers can be involved in the reaction, cementing its associated titanosilicate and giving rise to strong linkages on the support with the result of very stable heterostructures. The nanoarchitectures built up by this approach promote the growth and disposition of the titanosilicate nanosheets as a house-of-cards radially distributed around the fiber axis. Such an open arrangement represents suitable geometry for potential uses in adsorption and catalytic applications where the active surface has to be available. The content of the titanosilicate crystalline phase in the system represents about 12 wt %, and this percentage of the adsorbent fraction can achieve, at 298 K and 20 MPa, 0.14 wt % hydrogen adsorption with respect to the total mass of the system. Following postsynthesis treatments, small amounts of Pd (<0.1 wt %) have been incorporated into the resulting nanoarchitectures in order to improve their hydrogen adsorption capacity. In this way, Pd-layered titanosilicate supported on glass fibers has been tested as a hydrogen adsorbent at diverse pressures and temperatures, giving rise to values around 0.46 wt % at 298 K and 20 MPa. A mechanism of hydrogen spillover involving the titanosilicate framework and the Pd nanoparticules has been proposed to explain the high increase in the hydrogen uptake capacity after the incorporation of Pd into the nanoarchitecture.
