A new feature-based technique is introduced to solve the nonlinear forward problem (FP) of the electrical capacitance tomography with the target application of monitoring the metal fill profile in the lost foam casting process. The new technique is based on combining a linear solution to the FP and a correction factor (CF). The CF is estimated using an artificial neural network (ANN) trained using key features extracted from the metal distribution. The CF adjusts the linear solution of the FP to account for the nonlinear effects caused by the shielding effects of the metal. This approach shows promising results and avoids the curse of dimensionality through the use of features and not the actual metal distribution to train the ANN. The ANN is trained using nine features extracted from the metal distributions as input. The expected sensors readings are generated using ANSYS software. The performance of the ANN for the training and testing data was satisfactory, with an average root-mean-square error equal to 2.2%.

We show that a metric Jordan curve $\Gamma$ is \emph{bounded turning} if and only if there exists a \emph{weak-quasisymmetric} homeomorphism $\phi\colon \mathsf{S}^1 \to \Gamma$.
Synthesis, characterization, and thermal degradation studies on group VIA derived weak-link polymers
Resumo:
Polymers containing group VIA derived weak links, viz. poly(styrene disulfide) (PSD), poly- (styrene tetrasulfide) (PST), and poly(styrene diselenide) (PSDSE), have been synthesized. The polymers PSD and PST were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, TGA, and fast atom bombardment m w spectrometric (FABMS) techniques. The presence of different configurational sequences in PSD and PST were identified by *3C NMR spectroscopy. PSDSE, being insoluble in common organic solvents, was characterized using solid-state lac NMR (CP-MAS) spectroscopy. Thermal degradation of polymers under direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometric (DP-MS) conditions revealed that all the polymers undergo degradation through the weaklink scission. A comparative study of the pyrolysis products of these polymers with that of poly(styrene peroxide) (PSP) revealed a smooth transformation down the group with no monomer (styrene or oxygen) formation in PSP to only styrene and selenium metal in PSDSE. This trend of group VIA is explained from the energetics of the C-X bond (X = 0, S, and Se) which also seems to be important in addition to the weak X-X bond cleavage. In PSP and PSD, the behavior is also explained from the energetics of the alkoxy and thiyl radicals. The unique exothermic degradation in PSP compared to endothermic degradation in PSD and PSDSE is explained from the nature of the producta of degradation.

Layered perovskite oxides of the formula ACa~,La,Nb3-,Ti,010 (A = K, Rb, Cs and 0 < x d 2) have been prepared. The members adopt the structures of the parent ACazNb3010. Interlayer alkali cations in the niobium-titanium oxide series can be ion-exchanged with Li+, Na+, NH4+, or H+ to give new derivatives. Intercalation of the protonated derivatives with organic bases reveals that the Bronsted acidity of the solid solution series, HC~ ~ , L ~ ,N~ ~ , T ~ ,dOep~eOnd, s on the titanium content. While the x = 1 member (HCaLaNbzTiOlo) is nearly as acidic as the parent HCazNb3010, the x = 2 member (HLazNbTizOlo) is a weak acid hardly intercalating organic bases with pKa - 11.3. The variation of acidity is probably due to an ordering of Nb/Ti atoms in the triple octahedral perovskite slabs, [Ca~,La,Nb~,Ti,0~0], such that protons are attached to NbO6 octahedra in the x = 1 member and to Ti06 octahedra in the x = 2 member.

N,N',N `'-Tris(2-anisyl)guanidine, (ArNH)(2)C=NAr (Ar = 2-(MeO)C6H4), was cyclopallaclated with Pd(OC(O)R)(2) (R = Me, CF3) in toluene at 70 degrees C to afford palladacycles Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C6H3-(OMe)-3(NHC(NHAr)(=NAr))-2}(mu-OC(O)R)](2)(R = Me (1a) and CF3 (1b)) in 87% and 95% yield, respectively. Palladacycle 1a was subjected to a metathetical reaction with LiBr in aqueous ethanol at 78 degrees C to afford palladacycle Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C6H3(OMe)-3(NHC(NHAr)(=NAr))-2}(mu-Br)](2) (2) in 90% yield. Palladacycle 2 was subjected to a bridge-splitting reaction with Lewis bases in CH2Cl2 to afford the monomeric palladacycles Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C6H3(OMe)-3(NHC(NHAr)(=NAr))-2}Br(L)] (L = 2,6-Me2C5H3N (3a), 2,4-Me2C5H3N (3b), 3,5-Me2C5H3N (3c), XyNC (Xy = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 4a), (BuNC)-Bu-t (4b), and PPh3 (5)) in 87-95% yield. Palladacycle 2 upon reaction with 2 equiv of XyNC in CH2Cl2 afforded an unanticipated palladacycle, Pd{kappa(2)(C,N)-C(=NXy)(C6H3(OMe)-4)-2(N=C-(NH Ar)(2))-3} Br(CNXy)] (6) in 93% yield, and the driving force for the formation of 6 was ascribed to a ring contraction followed by amine-imine tautomerization. Palladacycles 1 a,b revealed a dimeric transoid in-in conformation with ``open book'' framework in the solid state. In solution, 1 a exhibited a fluxional behavior ascribed to the six-membered ``(C,N)Pd'' ring inversion and partly dissociates to the pincer type and kappa(2)-O,O'-OAc monomeric palladacycles by an anchimerically assisted acetate cleavage process as studied by variable-temperature H-1 NMR data. Palladacycles 3a,b revealed a unique trans configuration around the palladium with lutidine being placed trans to the Pd-C bond, whereas cis stereochemistry was observed between the Pd-C bond and the Lewis base in 4a (as determined by X-ray diffraction data) and 5 (as determined by P-31 and C-13 NMR data). The aforementioned stereochemical difference was explained by invoking relative hardness/softness of the donor atoms around the palladium center. In solution, palladacycles 3a-c exist as a mixture of two interconverting boat conformers via a planar intermediate without any bond breaking due to the six-membered ``(C,N)Pd'' ring inversion, whereas palladacycles 4a,b and 5 exist as a single isomer, as deduced from detailed H-1 NMR studies.

We report large quadratic nonlinearity in a series of 1:1 molecular complexes between methyl substituted benzene donors and quinone acceptors in solution. The first hyperpolarizability, beta(HRS), which is very small for the individual components, becomes large by intermolecular charge transfer (CT) interaction between the donor and the acceptor in the complex. In addition, we have investigated the geometry of these CT complexes in solution using polarization resolved hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS). Using linearly (electric field vector along X direction) and circularly polarized incident light, respectively, we have measured two macroscopic depolarization ratios D = I-2 omega,I-X,I-X/I-2 omega,I-Z,I-X and D' = I-2 omega,I-X,I-C/I-2 omega,I-Z,I-C in the laboratory fixed XYZ frame by detecting the second harmonic scattered light in a polarization resolved fashion. The experimentally obtained first hyperpolarizability, beta(HRS), and the value of macroscopic depolarization ratios, D and D', are then matched with the theoretically deduced values from single and double configuration interaction calculations performed using the Zerner's intermediate neglect of differential overlap self-consistent reaction field technique. In solution, since several geometries are possible, we have carried out calculations by rotating the acceptor moiety around three different axes keeping the donor molecule fixed at an optimized geometry. These rotations give us the theoretical beta(HRS), D and D' values as a function of the geometry of the complex. The calculated beta(HRS), D, and D' values that closely match with the experimental values, give the dominant equilibrium geometry in solution. All the CT complexes between methyl benzenes and chloranil or 1,2-dichloro-4,5-dicyano-p-benzoquinone investigated here are found to have a slipped parallel stacking of the donors and the acceptors. Furthermore, the geometries are staggered and in some pairs, a twist angle as high as 30 degrees is observed. Thus, we have demonstrated in this paper that the polarization resolved HRS technique along with theoretical calculations can unravel the geometry of CT complexes in solution. Conformational features and supramolecular structural organization in three aryl biscarbonates and an aryl biscarbamate with rigid acetylenic unit providing variable spacer lengths have been probed to gain insights into the packing features associated with molecular symmetry and the intermolecular interactions involving `organic' fluorine. Four structures but-2-yne-1,4-diyl bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenylcarbonate), 1; but-2-yne-1,4-diyl bis(4-fluorophenylcarbonate), 2; but-2-yne-1,4-diyl bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenylcarbamate), 3 and hexa-2,4-diyne-1,6-diyl bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenylcarbonate), 4 have been analyzed in this context. Compound 1 adopts a non-centrosymmetric ``twisted'' (syn) conformation, whereas 2, 3 and 4 acquire a centrosymmetric ``extended'' (anti) conformation. Weak intermolecular interactions and in particular those involving fluorine are found to dictate this conformational variation in the crystal structure of 1. A single-crystal neutron diffraction study at 90 K was performed on 1 to obtain further insights into these interactions involving `organic' fluorine.

We present the exact solution to a one-dimensional multicomponent quantum lattice model interacting by an exchange operator which falls off as the inverse sinh square of the distance. This interaction contains a variable range as a parameter and can thus interpolate between the known solutions for the nearest-neighbor chain and the inverse-square chain. The energy, susceptibility, charge stiffness, and the dispersion relations for low-lying excitations are explicitly calculated for the absolute ground state, as a function of both the range of the interaction and the number of species of fermions.

This work deals with the effects of weak nonlinearity and weak dissipation on a linear wave in relativistic gasdynamics. Using perturbation and asymptotic expansions, a relativistic analogue of generalised one-dimensional Burgers' equation of classical gasdynamics is derived to describe far-field description of the wave. Steady state solution is presented for strict one-dimensional case.

We consider the equation u(t) + u(n)u(x) + H(x, t, u) = 0 and derive a transformation relating it to u(t) + u(n)u(x) = 0. Special cases of the equation appearing in applications are discussed. Initial value problems and asymptotic behaviour of the solution are studied.

The reaction between Fe foil and a disc of ilmenite solid solution (Co-0.48 Ni-0.52) TiO3 was studied at 1273 K. At the metal/oxide interface, the displacement reaction, Fe + (Co,Mg)TiO3 = Co + (Fe,Mg)TiO3 occurs, resulting in an ilmenite solid solution containing three divalent cations. Ferrous ions diffuse into the oxide solid solution and cause the precipitation of Co-Fe alloy as discrete particles inside the oxide matrix. The morphology of the product layer was characterized by SEM. Only two phases, alloy and ilmenite, were detected in the reaction zone. This suggests that the local flux condition imposed by ilmenite stoichiometry (Co + Fe + Mg):Ti = 1:1] was satisfied during the reactive diffusion: (J(Co) + J(Fe) + J(Mg)) = J(Ti). The composition of the alloy and the oxide was determined using EPMA as a function of distance in the direction of diffusion. Although Mg does not participate in the displacement reaction, its composition in the ilmenite phase was found to be position dependent inside the reaction zone. The up-hill diffusion of inert Mg is caused by the development of chemical potential gradients as a result of displacement reaction. The evolution of composition gradients inside the reaction zone and the diffusion path in a ternary composition diagram of the system CoTiO3-FeTiO3-MgTiO3 are discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents an efficient Simulated Annealing with valid solution mechanism for finding an optimum conflict-free transmission schedule for a broadcast radio network. This is known as a Broadcast Scheduling Problem (BSP) and shown as an NP-complete problem, in earlier studies. Because of this NP-complete nature, earlier studies used genetic algorithms, mean field annealing, neural networks, factor graph and sum product algorithm, and sequential vertex coloring algorithm to obtain the solution. In our study, a valid solution mechanism is included in simulated annealing. Because of this inclusion, we are able to achieve better results even for networks with 100 nodes and 300 links. The results obtained using our methodology is compared with all the other earlier solution methods.

The reaction of 2-formylbenzenesulfonyl chloride 1 and its pseudo isomer 2 with primary amines give either the corresponding sulfonamido Schiff bases or the corresponding 2-formylbenzenesulfonamide depending on the concentration of the amine used. The derivatives exist as an equilibrium mixture of the corresponding sulfonamide and 2-alkyl-3-hydroxy(or 3-aminoalkyl)-benzisothiazole-1,1-dioxide. Spectroscopic studies suggest that 2-formylbenzenesulfonamides exist as benzisothiazole-1,1-dioxides in the solid state, as a mixture of 2-formylbenzenesulfonamide and the corresponding benzisothiazole-1,1-dioxide in solution and as 2-formyl-benzenesulfonamides in the gas phase.
