We discuss the influence of a uniform current j⃗ on the magnetization dynamics of a ferromagnetic metal. We find that the magnon energy ε(q⃗) has a current-induced contribution proportional to q⃗⋅J→, where J→ is the spin current, and predict that collective dynamics will be more strongly damped at finite j⃗. We obtain similar results for models with and without local moment participation in the magnetic order. For transition metal ferromagnets, we estimate that the uniform magnetic state will be destabilized for j≳109A cm-2. We discuss the relationship of this effect to the spin-torque effects that alter magnetization dynamics in inhomogeneous magnetic systems.

The metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) transitions of a series of Class II mixed valence dinuclear complexes bearing cyano bridging ligands may be varied systematically by variations to either the hexacyanometallate(II) donor or Co-III acceptor moieties. Specifically, the new dinuclear species trans-[(LCoNCFe)-Co-14S(CN)(5)](-) (L-14S = 6-methyl-1,11-diaza-4,8-dithia- cyclotetradecane-6-amine) and trans-[(LCoNCRu)-Co-14(CN)(5)]-(L-14 = 6-methyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6-amine) have been prepared and their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties are compared with the relative trans-[(LCoNCFe)-Co-14(CN)(5)](-). The crystal structures of Na{trans-[(LCoNCFe)-Co-14S(CN)(5)]}.51/2H(2)O.1/2EtOH, Na{trans-[(LCoNCRu)-Co-14(CN)(5)]}.3H(2)O and Na{trans-[(LCoNCRu)-Co-14(CN)(5)]}.8H(2)O are also reported. The ensuing changes to the MMCT energy have been examined within the framework of Hush theory, and it was found that the free energy change between the redox isomers was the dominant effect in altering the energy of the MMCT transition.

Visible pump-probe spectroscopy has been used to identify and characterize short-lived metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) excited states in a group of cyano-bridged mixed-valence complexes of the formula [(LCoNCMII)-N-III(CN)(5)](-), where L is a pentadentate macrocyclic pentaamine (L-14) or triamine-dithiaether (L-14S) and M is Fe or Ru. Nanosecond pump-probe spectroscopy on frozen solutions of [(LCoNCFeII)-Co-14-N-III(CN)(5)](-) and [(LCoNCFeII)-Co-14S-N-III(CN)(5)](-) at 11 K enabled the construction of difference transient absorption spectra that featured a rise in absorbance in the region of 350-400 nm consistent with the generation of the ferricyanide chromophore of the photoexcited complex. The MMCT excited state of the Ru analogue [(LCoNCRuII)-Co-14-N-III(CN)(5)](-) was too short-lived to allow its detection. Femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy on aqueous solutions of [(LCoNCFeII)-Co-14-N-III(CN)(5)](-) and [(LCoNCFeII)-Co-14S-N-III(CN)(5)](-) at room temperature enabled the lifetimes of their Co-II-Fe-III MMCT excited states to be determined as 0.8 and 1.3 ps, respectively.

The effects of pressure and temperature on the energy (E-op) of the metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT, Fe-II --> Co-III) transition of the cyano-bridged complexes trans - [(LCoNCFe)-Co-14(CN)(5)](-) and cis-[(LCoNCFe)-Co-14(CN)(5)](-) (where L-14 = 6-methyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecan-6-amine) were examined. The changes in the redox potentials of the cobalt and iron metal centres with pressure and temperature were also examined and the results interpreted with Marcus Hush theory. The observed redox reaction volumes can mainly be accounted for in terms of localised electrostriction effects. The shifts in E-op due to both pressure and temperature were found to be less than the shifts in the energy difference (E degrees) between the Co-III-Fe-II and Co-II-Fe-III redox isomers. The pressure and temperature dependence of the reorganisational energy, as well as contributions arising from the different spin states of Co-II, are discussed in order to account for this trend. To study the effect of pressure on Co-III electronic absorption bands, a new cyano-bridged complex, trans - [(LCoNCCo)-Co-14(CN)(5)], was prepared and characterised spectroscopically and structurally. X-Ray crystallography revealed this complex to be isostructural with trans -[(LCoNCFe)-Co-14(CN)(5)] center dot 5H(2)O.

We have investigated the isomeric distribution and rearrangement of complexes of the type [CoXLn](2+,3+) (where X = Cl-, OH-, H2O, and L-n represents a pentadentate 13-, 14-, and 15-membered tetraaza or diaza-dithia (N-4 or N2S2) macrocycle bearing a pendant primary amine). The preparative procedures for chloro complexes produced almost exclusively kinetically preferred cis isomers (where the pendant primary amine is cis to the chloro ligand) that can be separated by careful cation-exchange chromatography. For L-13 and L-14 the so-called cis-V isomer is isolated as the kinetic product, and for L-15 the cis-VI form (an N-based diastereomer) is the preferred, while for the L-14(S) complex both cis-V and trans-I forms are obtained. All these complexes rearrange to form stable trans isomers in which the pendent primary amine is trans to the monodentate aqua or hydroxo ligand, depending on pH and the workup procedure. In total 11 different complexes have been studied. From these, two different trans isomers of [CoCIL14S](2+) have been characterized crystallographically for the first time in addition to a new structure of cis-V-[CoCIL14S](2+); all were isolated as their chloride perchlorate salts. Two additional isomers have been identified and characterized by NMR as reaction intermediates. The remaining seven forms correspond to the complexes already known, produced in preparative procedures. The kinetic, thermal, and baric activation parameters for all the isomerization reactions have been determined and involve large activation enthalpies and positive volumes of activation. Activation entropies indicate a very important degree of hydrogen bonding in the reactivity of the complexes, confirmed by density functional theory studies on the stability of the different isomeric forms. The isomerization processes are not simple and even some unstable intermediates have been detected and characterized as part of the above-mentioned 11 forms of the complexes. A common reaction mechanism for the isomerization reactions has been proposed for all the complexes derived from the observed kinetic and solution behavior.

The present study investigates the effect of different sample preparation methods on the pyrolysis behaviour of metal-added biomass; Willow samples were compared in the presence of two salts of zinc and lead containing sulphate and nitrate anions which were added to the wood samples with three different techniques as dry-mixing, impregnation and ion-exchange. The effect of acid and water wash as common demineralisation pre-treatments were also analysed to evaluate their roles in the thermal degradation of the biomass. Results from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and pyrolysis-mass spectrometry (Py-MS) measurements indicated that these pre-treatments change the matrix and the physical-chemical properties of wood. Results suggested that these structural changes increase the thermal stability of cellulose during pyrolysis. Sample preparation was also found to be a crucial factor during pyrolysis; different anions of metal salts changed the weight loss rate curves of wood material, which indicates changes in the primary degradation process of the biomass. Results also showed that dry-mixing, impregnation or ion-exchange influence the thermal behaviour of wood in different ways when a chosen metal salt was and added to the wood material. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Tbe formation of Pd(TeR)n and (CuTeR)n from the reaction between telluroesters and Pd(II)or Cu(II) suggested that these organatellurium reagents may be useful precursors of RTe- ligands in reactions with transition-metal substrates. Also the formation of telluronium salts Me2RTeI- from the reaction between telluroesters and methyl iodide, together with the above, confirm the cleavage of -cõ-Te bonds rather than -C-Te bonds. The formation of a carboxylic acid from the toluene solution of a ditelluride d palladium(O) complex in the presence of light oxygen (from air) is demonstrated. When the solvent employed is p-xylene an aldehyde is formed. The reaction proceeds via the free radical, RTeO, with Pd(PPh3)4 as a catalyst. It has also been shown that the oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids is catalysed by ditelluride. Spin trapping experiments with PhCH=N(O)But (phenyl-t-butyl-nitrone) have provided evidence that the oxidative addition of an alkyl halide (RX=Mei, BunBr, BusecBr, ButBr, BrCH2-CH=CHCH2Br, and Br(CH2)4Br) to diphenyltelluride and reductive elimination of CH3SCN from Ph2(CH3)Te(NCS) proceeds via radical pathways. A mechanism is proposed for oxidative addition which involves the preformation of a charge transfer complex of alkyl halide and diphenyltelluride. The first step is the formation of a charge transfer complex, and the initial product of the oxidative addition is a "covalent" form of the tellurium(IV)compound. When the radical R is more stable, Ph2TeX2 may be the major tellurium(IV)product. The reaction of RTeNa (R=p-EtOC6H4, Ph) with organic dihalides X2(CH2)n (n=1,2,3,4) affords telluronium salts (n=3,4; X=Cl, Br) the nature of which is discussed. For n=l (X=Br, I)the products are formulated as charge transfer complexes of stoichiometry (RTe)2(CH2).CH2X2• For n=2, elimination of ditelluride occurs with the formation of an alkene. Some 125’Te Mõssbauer data are discussed and it is suggested that the unusually low value of 6 (7.58 mm.s-1 ) for  p-EtO.C6H4.Te)2(cH2)cH2Br2 relates to removal of 5's electronsfrom the spare pair orbltal via the charge transfer interaction. 125Te Mossbauer data for (p-EtO.C6H4)Te(CH2)4Br are typical of a tellurium (IV) compound and in particular ∇ is in the expected range for a telluronium salt. The product of the reaction of Na Te (C6H4.OEt), with 1,3-dibromopropane is, from the Mössbauer data, also a telluronium salt.

Reactive surface of mesoporous nanocrystalline silicon was used to synthesise noble metal nanoparticles via in situ reduction of the precursor salt solutions. The synthetic methodology for metal nanoparticle formation was systematically developed, and reaction conditions of metal salts reduction were optimised to prepare nanoparticles of controlled size distribution in the order 5–10 nm inside the mesoporous silicon template. CO oxidation was used as a test reaction for the synthesised Pt/porous silicon catalysts. Sharp reaction light-off was observed at about 120 °C on the optimised catalysts. The catalysts were shown to be stable in the extended steady-state runs and in the catalysts re-use experiments. Metal nanoparticles were shown to be stable to sintering at elevated temperatures up to 1000 °C. However, after thermal treatment on air, Pt nanoparticles were covered by a SiOx layer and were less active in CO oxidation.

The present thesis describes the development of heterogeneous catalytic methodologies using metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) as porous matrices for supporting transition metal catalysts. A wide spectrum of chemical reactions is covered. Following the introductory section (Chapter 1), the results are divided between one descriptive part (Chapter 2) and four experimental parts (Chapters 3–6). Chapter 2 provides a detailed account of MOFs and their role in heterogeneous catalysis. Specific synthesis methods and characterization techniques that may be unfamiliar to organic chemists are illustrated based on examples from this work. Pd-catalyzed heterogeneous C−C coupling and C−H functionalization reactions are studied in Chapter 3, with focus on their practical utility. A vast functional group tolerance is reported, allowing access to substrates of relevance for the pharmaceutical industry. Issues concerning the recyclability of MOF-supported catalysts, leaching and operation under continuous flow are discussed in detail. The following chapter explores puzzling questions regarding the nature of the catalytically active species and the pathways of deactivation for Pd@MOF catalysts. These questions are addressed through detailed mechanistic investigations which include in situ XRD and XAS data acquisition. For this purpose a custom reaction cell is also described in Chapter 4. The scope of Pd@MOF-catalyzed reactions is expanded in Chapter 5. A strategy for boosting the thermal and chemical robustness of MOF crystals is presented. Pd@MOF catalysts are coated with a protecting SiO2 layer, which improves their mechanical properties without impeding diffusion. The resulting nanocomposite is better suited to withstand the harsh conditions of aerobic oxidation reactions. In this chapter, the influence of the nanoparticles’ geometry over the catalyst’s selectivity is also investigated. While Chapters 3–5 dealt with Pd-catalyzed processes, Chapter 6 introduces hybrid materials based on first-row transition metals. Their reactivity is explored towards light-driven water splitting. The heterogenization process leads to stabilized active sites, facilitating the spectroscopic probing of intermediates in the catalytic cycle.

The ongoing depletion of fossil fuels and the severe consequences of the greenhouse effect make the development of alternative energy systems crucially important. While hydrogen is, in principle, a promising alternative, releasing nothing but energy and pure water. Hydrogen storage is complicated and no completely viable technique has been proposed so far. This work is concerned with the study of one potential alternative to pure hydrogen: ammonia, and more specifically its storage in solids. Ammonia, NH3, can be regarded as a chemical hydrogen carrier with the advantages of strongly reduced flammability and explosiveness as compared to hydrogen. Furthermore, ammine metal salts presented here as promising ammonia stores easily store up to 50 wt.-% ammonia, giving them a volumetric energy density comparable to natural gas. The model system NiX2–NH3 ( X = Cl, Br, I) is studied thoroughly with respect to ammine salt formation, thermal decomposition, air stability and structural effects. The system CuX2–NH3 ( X = Cl, Br) has an adverse thermal decomposition behaviour, making it impractical for use as an ammonia store. This system is, however, most interesting from a structural point of view and some work concerning the study of the structural behaviour of this system is presented. Finally, close chemical relatives to the metal ammine halides, the metal ammine nitrates are studied. They exhibit interesting anion arrangements, which is an impressive showcase for the combination of diffraction and spectroscopic information. The characterisation techniques in this thesis range from powder diffraction over single crystal diffraction, spectroscopy, computational modelling, thermal analyses to gravimetric uptake experiments. Further highlights are the structure solutions and refinements from powder data of (NH4)2[NiCl4(H2O)(NH3)] and Ni(NH3)2(NO3)2, the combination of crystallographic and chemical information for the elucidation of the (NH4)2[NiCl4(H2O)(NH3)] formation reaction and the growth of single crystals under ammonia flow, a technique allowing the first documented successful growth and single crystal diffraction measurement for [Cu(NH3)6]Cl2.
