Crònica de la conferència internacional 'The Future of the Mediterranean Rural Environment: Prospects for Sustainable Land Use and Management' sobre el desenvolupament sostenible de les àrees rurals mediterrànies. La conferència va tenir lloc entre el 8 i l’11 de maig de 2000 a Menemen (Turquia) i va reunir experts de diverses disciplines per establir els problemes principals que afecten la Mediterrània i per debatre mesures concretes de gestió, evitant o minimitzant els efectes negatius dels canvis econòmics, polítics, tecnològics i mediambientals recents

The re-urbanization of the city center of Manaus , Brazil - Facing the challenges of informal settlements

Illegal occupation of urban land in Brazil is a widespread phenomenon. Slum dwellers are excluded from the attributes of urban citizenship although they provide the labor force required by low productivity urban services needed by cities. Illegal settlements generate multiple problems for the rest of the city . Its solution is of key relevance to the city in general but also provide an opportunity for the social and economic advancement of slum dwellers. The programs required to attain these results are complex and difficult to implement underscoring the challenges countries will face to attain the Millennium Development Goals of reducing the population living in slums.

Extractivism, economic diversification and prospects for sustainable development in Ecuador

The objectives of this paper are first, evaluating economic, social and environmental effects on oil extraction in Ecuador during the last 41 years, and second, discussing prospects to achieving a sustainable and equitable development path in the future, in the context of declining oil reserves. The current government is pursuing an extractivist policy, based on expanding oil extraction in formerly unexploited fields -including those inside the Yasuni National Park- and starting largescale mining exploitation. Two future options will be evaluated, first, an expansion of extractive activities, and second an alternative based on conservation, with sustainable use of natural resources (e.g. ecotourism, agroforestry, bio-knowledge), without expansion of oil field expansion and mining.
