O conceito de turismo sustentável passou por uma série de transformações até chegar à proposta atual em que se crê que todo tipo de empreendimento pode ter como objetivo a sustentabilidade. Os empreendimentos hoteleiros conhecidos como resorts – vistos, tradicionalmente, como uma forma de hospedagem insustentável do ponto de vista social - foram escolhidos como objeto desta pesquisa que tem como objetivo explorar como este segmento da indústria hoteleira vêm respondendo à nova proposta inclusiva do conceito de turismo sustentável. Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa em duas dimensões. A primeira buscou fornecer um panorama geral sobre o entendimento do conceito de turismo sustentável e a forma como este conceito vêm sendo operacionalizado pelos resorts de praia do Brasil. Explorou, ainda, as formas como este conceito vêm sendo operacionalizado pelos resorts. A segunda dimensão da pesquisa buscou aprofundar essas questões num grupo de resorts localizados no litoral norte da Bahia – Praia do Forte Ecoresort e Complexo Costa do Sauípe – bem como verificar os impactos percebidos pelas comunidades locais. Os resultados demonstram que os resorts têm uma boa noção do conceito de turismo sustentável, mas apresentam dificuldades na operacionalização do mesmo. Além da falta de informação e apoio, os resorts não possuem instrumentos gerenciais que incentivem a busca da sustentabilidade, apesar desta questão estar presente nas diretrizes estratégicas de todos eles. Sendo assim, a pesquisa demonstrou uma grande distância entre o discurso e a prática na busca pelo turismo sustentável. Percebe-se que os resorts, apesar de interessados em incluir as comunidades no empreendimento, praticam de maneira mais freqüente ações pontuais e assistencialistas que resultam em pouca – ou nenhuma – mudança positiva nas condições de bem-estar das comunidades. Assim, como é comum acontecer em outros setores, o envolvimento dos resorts com a sustentabilidade se dá de forma separada dos negócios o que faz com que as iniciativas - a despeito da preocupação de muitos empreendimentos– apresentem resultados marginais na dimensão social da sustentabilidade. Nos estudos de caso, identificou-se que o Praia do Forte Ecoresort apresenta resultados mais próximos daqueles desejados pelas comunidades que contam com o turismo para alcançar o desenvolvimento. Apesar de algumas iniciativas significativas do Complexo Costa do Sauípe este, até o momento, não apresenta uma atuação que possa ser caracterizada como bem sucedida no que se refere à dimensão social da sustentabilidade.

O mercado de eventos corporativos no Brasil se encontra em forte expansão na medida em que a economia brasileira ganha maior destaque no mundo e as empresas nacionais crescem e mudam de patamar. Apenas em 2013, as receitas com viagens corporativas cresceram 13,8% em relação ao ano anterior (ABEOC, 2014). Além disso, o setor já representa metade do faturamento dos resorts no país – onde acontece boa parte das grandes convenções – e se torna uma estratégia importante de comunicação para as empresas alavancarem seus negócios (informação verbal) . Neste contexto, o mercado de eventos corporativos possui um papel fundamental para suportar e incrementar as operações dos resorts. Dentre as principais vantagens de se atender o público corporativo observa-se a ocorrência de taxas de ocupação superiores, com maior consistência ao longo do ano, bem como retornos mais elevados se comparado ao turismo de lazer. Em adição, o segmento corporativo fomenta o turismo de lazer nos resorts, a partir do momento em que o executivo retorna para o destino com seus familiares ou estende seu prazo de permanência após as reuniões de negócio. Dado este cenário promissor do mercado de eventos corporativos e sua relevância para as atividades dos resorts, este trabalho consiste em um estudo mercadológico, destinado aos investidores interessados na construção de um espaço para eventos no resort, a ser futuramente construído no complexo turístico Thermas Water Park, em Águas de São Pedro, interior de São Paulo. Contudo, embora não se descarte a possibilidade da construção de um espaço multiuso, ou seja, que atenda os mais diversos tipos de eventos, o estudo foca no segmento de eventos corporativos e empresariais, visando à compreensão de qual é o modelo de espaço para eventos mais adequado para atender o público corporativo em um resort no Thermas Water Park. Para esse propósito, a metodologia empregada contempla duas pesquisas com diferentes públicos-alvo: uma analisa o lado da oferta - representada por resorts com espaços para eventos corporativos - e a outra o lado da demanda - representada pelos responsáveis pela organização dos eventos corporativos nas empresas-contratantes. Dessa forma, por meio da condução de um estudo comparativo, o estudo possibilitará uma ampla visão do que o mercado de resorts com foco corporativo tem oferecido ao consumidor; e por meio de uma pesquisa com o público-alvo do empreendimento, será possível traçar as suas atuais necessidades e desejos, de forma a se obter um embasamento mercadológico que justifique os futuros investimentos que serão realizados no Thermas Water Park.

This paper presents the basic principles of the evaporative cooling process for human thermal comfort, the principles of operation for the direct evaporative cooling system and the mathematical development of the equations of thermal exchanges, allowing the determination of the effectiveness of saturation. It also presents the results of experimental tests in a direct evaporative cooler that take place in the Air Conditioning Laboratory at the University of Taubate Mechanical Engineering Department, and the experimental results are used to determinate the convective heat transfer co-efficient and to compare with the mathematical model. Heat stress has negative effects on pregnancy rates of lactating dairy cattle. There are genetic differences in tolerance to heat stress; Bos taurus indicus (B. t. indicus) cattle and embryos are more thermotolerant than Bos taurus taurus (B. t. taurus). In the present study, the effects of sire and sire breed on conception and embryonic/fetal loss rates of lactating Holstein cows during the Brazilian summer were determined. In Experiment 1, cows (n = 302) were AI after estrus detection or at a fixed-time with semen from one Gyr (B. t. indicus) or one Holstein sire (B. t. taurus). Pregnancy was diagnosed 80 days after AI. In Experiment 2, cows (n = 811) were AI with semen from three Gyr and two Holstein sires. Pregnancy was diagnosed at 30-40 and at 60-80 days after AI. Cows diagnosed pregnant at the first examination but non-pregnant at the second were considered as having lost their embryo or fetus. Data were analyzed by logistic regression. The model considered the effect of sire within breed, sire breed, days postpartum, period of lactation, and AI type (AI after estrus versus fixed-time). There was no effect of the AI type, days postpartum or milk production on conception or embryonic loss rates. The use of Gyr bulls increased pregnancy rate when compared to Holstein bulls [9.1% (60/657) versus 5.0% (23/456), respectively, P = 0.008; data from Experiments 1 and 2 combined]. Additionally, in Experiment 2, cows inseminated using semen from sire #4 (Gyr) had lower embryonic loss (10%) when compared with other B. t. indicus (35.3% and 40%) or B. t. taurus sires (18.2% and 38.5%, P = 0.03). In conclusion, the use of B. t. indicus sires may result in higher conception rates in lactating Holstein cows during summer heat stress. Moreover, sire can affect embryonic loss and selection of bulls according to this criterion may result in higher parturition rates in lactating Holstein cows. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Vacas da raça Holandesas em lactação (n=158) aos 213±112 dias de lactação e produção de 26±9kg leite/dia, foram aleatoriamente distribuídas em três grupos: controle (GC, n=52, salina); GnRH (GG, n=55, 100mcg de gonadorelina); e hCG (GH, n=51, 2500UI de hCG) aplicado no dia 5 após a inseminação artificial (IA). A temperatura retal foi verificada no momento da IA, e as amostras de sangue coletadas nos dias 5, 7 e 12 após a IA. A concepção foi determinada entre os dias 42 e 49 após IA. As concentrações séricas de progesterona (P4 - ng/ml, média±EPM) para GC, GG, e GH foram, respectivamente: no dia 5: 2,7±0,4, 2,5±0,4 e 3,2±0,4; no dia 7: 4,8±0,4, 4,2±0,4 e 5,7±0,5; e no dia 12 após a IA: 5,2±0,4, 6,9±0,4 e 8,5±0,5. O aumento proporcional na concentração sérica de P4 entre os dias 5 e 7 após IA (GC: 178%, GG: 168%, e GH: 178%) sugere que os tratamentos não induziram efeito luteotrópico no corpo lúteo (CL) existente. O aumento na P4 sérica entre os dias 7 e 12 nos animais tratados com GnRH ou hCG (GG: 164% e GH: 149%, P<0,01) em relação aos animais controle (GC: 18%, P=0,31), sugere a indução de novo CL. Os tratamentos com GnRH ou hCG aumentaram as taxas de concepção nas vacas com temperatura retal abaixo de 39,7°C (GC: 10,1%, n=26; GG: 36,8%, n=27 e GH: 32,8%, n=21), mas não em vacas com temperatura retal acima de 39,7°C (15,2% n=26; 17,8%, n=28 e 24,4%, n=30). Os resultados sugerem que a alta temperatura corporal pode mascarar os efeitos positivos do tratamento com GnRH ou hCG no dia 5 após a IA, na concepção.

In order to access the effects of cultivation in soil, sand or a commercial substrate on the productivity of Bonus #2 cultivars, 'Don Carlos' and 'Hy Mark', two experiments were conducted in the greenhouse at FCAV-UNESP, Jaboticabal- SP, Brazil, 21° 15' 22 S, 48° 18'58 W, and altitude of 595 m, from November 1999 to April 2000 (summer), and from July to November 2000 (Winter). For cultivation in soil, chemical nutrients were added, and plants were irrigated with drip irrigation. Fertigation with recirculation of the nutrient solution was used on sand; slabs were used on commercial substrate with the fertigation with non circulating nutrient solution. Bonus #2 cultivar yielded the highest production of marketable fruit, but were later in production, while Hy Mark cultivar had early production but a lower number of fruit per plant. The winter planting yielded higher production of marketable fruit while summer plantings yielded lower number of fruit per plant, but with higher average weigh. The combination between cultivation systems and cultivars yielded higher fruit production in winter.

The objective of this study was to compare a GnRH-based to an estrogen/progesterone (E2/P4)-based protocol for estrous cycle synchronization and fixed timed artificial insemination (TAI), both designed for synchronization of ovulation and to reduce the period from follicular emergence until ovulation in cows with a synchronized follicular wave. A total of 1,190 lactating Holstein cows (primiparous: n = 685 and multiparous: n = 505) yielding 26.5 ± 0.30 kg of milk/d at 177 ± 5.02 d in milk were randomly assigned to receive one of the following programs: 5-d Cosynch protocol [d -8: controlled internal drug release (CIDR) + GnRH; d -3: CIDR removal + PGF2α; d -2: PGF2α; d 0: TAI + GnRH] or E2/P4 protocol (d -10: CIDR + estradiol benzoate; d -3: PGF2α; d -2: CIDR removal + estradiol cypionate; d 0: TAI). Rectal temperature and circulating progesterone (P4) were measured on d -3, -2, 0 (TAI), and 7. The estrous cycle was considered to be synchronized when P4 was ≥1.0 ng/mL on d 7 in cows that had luteolysis (P4 ≤0.4 ng/mL on d 0). To evaluate the effects of heat stress, cows were classified by number of heat stress events: 0, 1, and 2-or-more measurements of elevated body temperature (≥39.1°C). Pregnancy success (pregnancy per artificial insemination, P/AI) was determined at d 32 and 60 after TAI. The cows in the 5-d Cosynch protocol had increased circulating P4 at the time of PGF2α injection (2.66 ± 0.13 vs. 1.66 ± 0.13 ng/mL). The cows in the E2/P4 protocol were more likely to be detected in estrus (62.8 vs. 43.4%) compared with the cows in the 5-d Cosynch protocol, and expression of estrus improved P/AI in both treatments. The cows in the 5-d Cosynch protocol had greater percentage of synchronized estrous cycle (78.2%), compared with cows in the E2/P4 protocol (70.7%). On d 60, the E2/P4 protocol tended to improve P/AI (20.7 vs. 16.7%) and reduced pregnancy loss from 32 to 60 d (11.0 vs. 19.6%), compared with the 5-d Cosynch protocol. In cows with their estrous cycle synchronized, the E2/P4 protocol had greater P/AI (25.6 vs. 17.7%) on d 60 and lower pregnancy loss from 32 to 60 d (6.7 vs. 21.7%) compared with cows in the 5-d Cosynch protocol. Follicle diameter affected pregnancy loss from 32 to 60 d only in the cows in the 5-d Cosynch protocol, with smaller follicles resulting in greater pregnancy loss. Pregnancy per AI at d 60 was different between protocols in the cows with 2 or more measurements of heat stress (5-d Cosynch = 12.2% vs. E2/P4 = 22.8%), but not in the cows without or with 1 heat stress measurement. In conclusion, the 5-d Cosynch protocol apparently produced better estrous cycle synchronization than the E2/P4 protocol but did not improve P/AI. The potential explanation for these results is that increased E2 concentrations during the periovulatory period can improve pregnancy success and pregnancy maintenance, and this effect appears to be greatest in heat-stressed cows when circulating E2 may be reduced. © 2013 American Dairy Science Association.

There are significant, fundamental changes taking place in global air and sea surface temperatures and sea levels. The Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change noted that many of the warmest years on the instrumental record of global surface temperatures have occurred within the last twelve years, i.e. 1995-2006 (IPCC, 2007). The Caribbean tourism product is particularly vulnerable to climate change. On the demand side, mitigation measures in other countries – for example, measures to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels – could have implications for airfares and cruise prices and, therefore, for the demand for travel, particularly to long-haul destinations such as the Caribbean (Clayton, 2009). On the supply side, sea level rise will cause beaches to disappear and damage coastal resorts. Changes in the frequency and severity of hurricanes are likely to magnify that damage. Other indirect impacts on the tourism product include rising insurance premiums and competition for water resources (Cashman, Cumberbatch, & Moore, 2012). The present report has used information on historic and future Caribbean climate data to calculate that the Caribbean tourism climatic index (TCI) ranges from −20 (impossible) to +100 (ideal). In addition to projections for the Caribbean, the report has produced TCI projections for the New York City area (specifically, Central Park), which have been used as comparators for Caribbean country projections. The conditions in the source market provide a benchmark against which visitors may judge their experience in the tourism destination. The historical and forecasted TCIs for the Caribbean under both the A2 and B2 climate scenarios of the IPCC suggest that climatic conditions in the Caribbean are expected to deteriorate, and are likely to become less conducive to tourism. More specifically, the greatest decline in the TCI is likely to occur during the northern hemisphere summer months from May to September. At the same time, the scenario analysis indicates that home conditions during the traditional tourist season (December – April) are likely to improve, which could make it more attractive for visitors from these markets to consider ‘staycations’ as an alternative to overseas trips.

Buffaloes and bovines are polyestrous and seasonal or annual livestock, respectively, that show reduced fertility during heat stress. To investigate whether reduced fertility is related to oocyte competence in both species, immature oocytes from buffalo and bovine heifers were collected during winter and summer and subjected to molecular analyses. In each season, heifers of both species had their follicular wave emergence synchronized with a standard protocol (Ferreira et al., 2011). Before being subjected to ovum pick up (OPU), cutaneous (CT; degrees C) and rectal (RT; degrees C) temperatures and respiratory rate (RR; breaths/min) were measured. Oocytes' RNA was extracted to evaluate the expression of target genes related to mtDNA replication/transcription (PPARGC1A, TFAM and MT-CO1), apoptosis (BAX and BCL2) and HS (HSP90AA1 and HSPA1AB). ACTB, HIST1H2AG and GAPDH were initially chosen as housekeeping genes. In buffaloes, CT (35.0 +/- 0.4 vs 23.8 +/- 0.5), RT (38.7 +/- 0.1 vs 38.0 +/- 0) and RR (21.3 +/- 1.2 vs 15.4 +/- 1.1) were higher during summer than winter. However, in bovine heifers, RT (38.7 +/- 0.1 vs 38.6 +/- 0.1) and RR (44.8 +/- 1.5 vs 40.6 +/- 1.5) were similar in both seasons, while CT (31.6 +/- 0.3 vs 30.2 +/- 0.3) was increased during summer. Reduced expression of ACTB, HIST1H2AG and GAPDH was evidenced during summer, disqualifying them as housekeeping genes. Similarly, the expression of all target genes was reduced during summer in oocytes of both species. In summary, physiological responses to heat stress seem to be more intense in buffalo than bovine heifers. However, in both species, negative effects of heat stress upon oocyte quality occur at the molecular level and affects genes related to several biological functions.
