This article is intended to open a discussion about the historical development of lakes Zirahuen, Patzcuaro and Cuitzeo in the state of Michoacan, and the postulated relationships between lake ecology and evolution. Dr Fernando De Buen was the first man dedicated to limnology in Mexico who came to the country in the 1930s. He was adviser at the Estacion Limnologica de Patzcuaro and wrote outstanding papers dealing with Mexican lakes. The lakes of Michoacan probably formed in the late Pliocene or Holocene, and were part of a tributary to the Lerma River, which became isolated by successive volanic barriers to form lake basins. Lake Zirahuen is a warm monomictic waterbody with unique water dynamics amongst the Michoacan lakes. Because it is relatively deep (max depth 40m), seasonal patterns of alternating circulation and thermal stratification develop in the lake, a feature not shared by the other two polymictic shallow lakes, Patzcuaro and Cuitzeo.

Strength at extreme pressures (>1 Mbar or 100 GPa) and high strain rates (106-108 s-1) of materials is not well characterized. The goal of the research outlined in this thesis is to study the strength of tantalum (Ta) at these conditions. The Omega Laser in the Laboratory for Laser Energetics in Rochester, New York is used to create such extreme conditions. Targets are designed with ripples or waves on the surface, and these samples are subjected to high pressures using Omega’s high energy laser beams. In these experiments, the observational parameter is the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability in the form of ripple growth on single-mode ripples. The experimental platform used for these experiments is the “ride-along” laser compression recovery experiments, which provide a way to recover the specimens having been subjected to high pressures. Six different experiments are performed on the Omega laser using single-mode tantalum targets at different laser energies. The energy indicates the amount of laser energy that impinges the target. For each target, values for growth factor are obtained by comparing the profile of ripples before and after the experiment. With increasing energy, the growth factor increased.

Engineering simulations are used to interpret and correlate the measurements of growth factor to a measure of strength. In order to validate the engineering constitutive model for tantalum, a series of simulations are performed using the code Eureka, based on the Optimal Transportation Meshfree (OTM) method. Two different configurations are studied in the simulations: RM instabilities in single and multimode ripples. Six different simulations are performed for the single ripple configuration of the RM instability experiment, with drives corresponding to laser energies used in the experiments. Each successive simulation is performed at higher drive energy, and it is observed that with increasing energy, the growth factor increases. Overall, there is favorable agreement between the data from the simulations and the experiments. The peak growth factors from the simulations and the experiments are within 10% agreement. For the multimode simulations, the goal is to assist in the design of the laser driven experiments using the Omega laser. A series of three-mode and four-mode patterns are simulated at various energies and the resulting growth of the RM instability is computed. Based on the results of the simulations, a configuration is selected for the multimode experiments. These simulations also serve as validation for the constitutive model and the material parameters for tantalum that are used in the simulations.

By designing samples with initial perturbations in the form of single-mode and multimode ripples and subjecting these samples to high pressures, the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability is investigated in both laser compression experiments and simulations. By correlating the growth of these ripples to measures of strength, a better understanding of the strength of tantalum at high pressures is achieved.

La sociedad actual cada vez cambia con más rapidez, por lo tanto para que los países sigan siendo competitivos en el mercado mundial y el desarrollo del país vaya en aumento es necesario llevar a cabo una innovación de calidad. A lo largo de este trabajo hemos identificado y analizado los principales factores que influyen a la innovación en dos países latinoamericanos, Chile y México. De esta forma, el objeto de este trabajo consiste en Desarrollar un Plan de Acción que permita a los gobiernos de los países analizados desarrollar su capacidad innovadora. Para ello, se ha utilizado una metodología denominada Delphi, mediante la cual hemos conocido la opinión y percepción que tienen algunos expertos, que se dedican al estudio de la innovación. Los resultados obtenidos indican que tanto la educación como la financiación de las actividades de investigación y educación son los factores que determinan el plan innovador de un país. Asimismo, mediante dicho plan los Gobiernos podrían llegar a ser más eficientes y aprovechar las oportunidades que poseen para mejorar la calidad de la innovación que se lleva a cabo en Chile y México.

O estudo que se segue é uma proposta de reflexão sobre a programação de saúde para a população usuária do SUS, em especial a assistência oncológica, as sucessivas estratégias político-administrativas e medidas de soluções a serem ofertadas à população portadora de câncer. Percebe-se o desequilíbrio entre a operacionalidade real e a operacionalidade suposta ideal, para dar conta dos casos novos de câncer (CNC)/ano, a atenção à saúde concentrada nos grandes centros urbanos, reflexo de um estímulo a investimentos em saúde direcionados aos centros urbanos, localidades de maior crescimento econômico e social. Objetivando o balanço de uma experiência de programação a partir das necessidades, tomamos como norte o Projeto Expande, para a análise da real assistência em oncologia no país, que se traduz no conjunto: oferta de serviço necessidade de tratamento específico para a população demanda, identificando déficit e necessidade. Nesse sentido, com base na programação e nas informações de produtividade SUS/Brasil, disponíveis no INCA , optamos por acompanhar os dados referentes ao ano 2008, quantificados e analisados, tendo como ponto de partida a estimativa de CNC/ano 2008, parâmetros assistenciais estimativa de necessidade máxima). Este estudo, com esse modelo, objetivou levantar subsídios que supostamente contribuam para o aprimoramento da Política de Atenção ao Câncer, em especial uma Política de Expansão Oncológica para o país.

This paper looks briefly at some of the more recent analyses and interpretations of the changes that have occurred in the population dynamics of Windermere perch and at the present level of understanding. The long-term study has shown how flexible the population is and how it has behaved in different ways over successive periods of time since 1939. Through one of these periods it was possible to account for nearly all the variance in recruitment by a relatively simple explanatory model. The reduction in numbers on the outbreak of disease in 1976 started a natural experiment which will form a baseline for future studies.

This research is concerned with block coding for a feedback communication system in which the forward and feedback channels are independently disturbed by additive white Gaussian noise and average power constrained. Two coding schemes are proposed in which the messages to be coded for transmission over the forward channel are realized as a set of orthogonal waveforms. A finite number of forward and feedback transmissions (iterations) per message is made. Information received over the feedback channel is used to modify the waveform transmitted on successive forward iterations in such a way that the expected value of forward signal energy is zero on all iterations after the first. Similarly, information is sent over the feedback channel in such a way that the expected value of feedback signal energy is also zero on all iterations after the first. These schemes are shown to achieve a lower probability of error than the best one-way coding scheme at all rates up to the forward channel capacity, provided only that the feedback channel capacity be greater than the forward channel capacity. These schemes make more efficient use of the available feedback power than existing feedback coding schemes, and therefore require less feedback power to achieve a given error performance.

Large plane deformations of thin elastic sheets of neo-Hookean material are considered and a method of successive substitutions is developed to solve problems within the two-dimensional theory of finite plane stress. The first approximation is determined by linear boundary value problems on two harmonic functions, and it is approached asymptotically at very large extensions in the plane of the sheet. The second and higher approximations are obtained by solving Poisson equations. The method requires modification when the membrane has a traction-free edge.

Several problems are treated involving infinite sheets under uniform biaxial stretching at infinity. First approximations are obtained when a circular or elliptic inclusion is present and when the sheet has a circular or elliptic hole, including the limiting cases of a line inclusion and a straight crack or slit. Good agreement with exact solutions is found for circularly symmetric deformations. Other examples discuss the stretching of a short wide strip, the deformation near a boundary corner which is traction-free, and the application of a concentrated load to a boundary point.

The evoked response, a signal present in the electro-encephalogram when specific sense modalities are stimulated with brief sensory inputs, has not yet revealed as much about brain function as it apparently promised when first recorded in the late 1940's. One of the problems has been to record the responses at a large number of points on the surface of the head; thus in order to achieve greater spatial resolution than previously attained, a 50-channel recording system was designed to monitor experiments with human visually evoked responses.

Conventional voltage versus time plots of the responses were found inadequate as a means of making qualitative studies of such a large data space. This problem was solved by creating a graphical display of the responses in the form of equipotential maps of the activity at successive instants during the complete response. In order to ascertain the necessary complexity of any models of the responses, factor analytic procedures were used to show that models characterized by only five or six independent parameters could adequately represent the variability in all recording channels.

One type of equivalent source for the responses which meets these specifications is the electrostatic dipole. Two different dipole models were studied: the dipole in a homogeneous sphere and the dipole in a sphere comprised of two spherical shells (of different conductivities) concentric with and enclosing a homogeneous sphere of a third conductivity. These models were used to determine nonlinear least squares fits of dipole parameters to a given potential distribution on the surface of a spherical approximation to the head. Numerous tests of the procedures were conducted with problems having known solutions. After these theoretical studies demonstrated the applicability of the technique, the models were used to determine inverse solutions for the evoked response potentials at various times throughout the responses. It was found that reliable estimates of the location and strength of cortical activity were obtained, and that the two models differed only slightly in their inverse solutions. These techniques enabled information flow in the brain, as indicated by locations and strengths of active sites, to be followed throughout the evoked response.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar o julgamento colegiado dos recursos nos Tribunais de segunda instância, à luz das razões teóricas subjacentes à colegialidade e das garantias fundamentais do processo. Após a exposição das finalidades com que, em abstrato, a lei processual institui um órgão judicial colegiado para o julgamento dos recursos (i) reforço da cognição judicial, (ii) garantia de independência dos julgadores e (iii) contenção do arbítrio individual , é feita a análise pormenorizada das sucessivas etapas de que se compõe o procedimento recursal ordinário da apelação, conforme a disciplina prevista nas leis federais e em disposições regimentais, como a distribuição dos recursos, o papel do relator, a figura do revisor, a pauta da sessão de julgamento, o regime da sustentação oral, a mecânica da deliberação colegiada, a atividade de redação do acórdão e a intimação das partes quanto ao teor da decisão, a fim de identificar os pontos em que o regime formal do julgamento dos recursos termina por revelar um descompasso com as premissas por que deveria se guiar. Em todo o trabalho, o marco teórico utilizado deita raízes na concepção democrática do direito processual civil, fundada na máxima eficácia das garantias fundamentais do processo previstas na Constituição Federal de 1988.

Podemos encontrar en la naturaleza dos tipos de ondas. Por una lado est an las ondas lineales y por otro lado las ondas no lineales. Tradicionalmente, hablamos de las ondas lineales, que son las m as familia- res, las que estamos m as acostumbrados a encontrarnos en el d a a d a, y las que llevamos estudiando desde hace mucho tiempo. Entre ellas encontramos las ondas de la luz y las del sonido, por ejemplo. Estas ondas tienen, sea cual sea su forma, velocidad, amplitud y longitud de onda constantes. Asimismo, obedecen al principio de superposici on. Por otro lado, en este trabajo, destacaremos las ondas no lineales, que son menos familiares que las anteriores comentadas, pero no por ello menos im- portantes. Este tipo de ondas son muy diferentes a las lineales, ya que en ellas la amplitud, la longitud de onda y la velocidad no son constantes. Entre los ejemplos donde las encontramos, destacamos una ola en el mar aproxi- mandose a la orilla. Vemos que la distancia entre las crestas va decreciendo, la velocidad cambia y la altura de la ola va creciendo conforme va percibien- do el fondo; llegando a un punto en el que la ola se rompe ya que la parte superior se ha adelantado demasiado a la inferior. Con respecto a esta parte de la ciencia, la Matem atica y F sica No Lineal, cabe destacar sus grandes avances en la segunda mitad del siglo XX con la Teor a de Solitones, punto en el que centraremos el tema de este trabajo. En primer lugar daremos una de nici on sencilla de solit on: los solitones son ondas no lineales que exhiben un comportamiento extremadamente inespe- rado e interesante, son ondas solitarias que se propagan sin deformarse. Esta tese baseia-se em trabalho etnográfico que investiga performances de gênero em um Clube de Mulheres no Rio de Janeiro, onde, após um show de strip-tease masculino para uma platéia exclusivamente feminina, tem início uma festa dançante com a presença de público masculino. No espetáculo são encenados atos (hetero)sexuais em duplas ou em grupo, envolvendo os strippers e as mulheres que voluntariamente sobem ao palco. A trilha sonora, marcada pelo estilo pornofunk, traz elementos alusivos à infidelidade conjugal masculina e feminina, à orgia e à prostituição masculina e feminina. Como em rituais de inversão, há, durante o show, tanto uma suspensão controlada das convenções de gênero tradicionais, quanto sua paradoxal reafirmação. Para o deleite de um público feminino, os strippers mantêm no palco a representação do papel ativo na cópula, e tanto sua hexis corporal quanto suas performances realçam a prontidão para o ato sexual, a virilidade e o controle sobre a conduta feminina. As mulheres, por sua vez, encenam uma parcial submissão ao controle masculino. Elas manifestam alguma reatividade e heteronomia em relação aos homens na festa que acontece depois, quando pares heterossexuais relativamente anônimos interagem através de aproximações sucessivas que englobam carícias e beijos na boca. Neste contexto, como sujeitos ou objetos, tanto os strippers quanto as mulheres desempenham posições conflitantes com as tradicionais expectativas de gênero, que permanecem, entretanto, preservadas em grande medida pela idéia de que elas dependem de estímulos especiais para, no campo do erotismo e da sexualidade, desejar ou fazer coisas para as quais os homens estariam supostamente sempre prontos. A tese procura mostrar que, como espécie de preço a pagar pelas inversões que ocorrem nesse espaço, tanto a imagem das mulheres quanto a dos strippers é desvalorizada, recaindo sobre eles os estigmas que ainda cercam as rupturas relativas às convenções de gênero.

The general plan of this work consists of individual factsheets containing a list of works by each author, along with reference bibliography and, whenever possible, personal pictures and additional material. The datasheets will be published primarily in chronological order, although this is subject to change by the availability of materials for successive editions. This work represents another approach for the recovery and revalorization of those who set the foundations of Argentine ichthyology while in diverse historical circumstances. I expect this to be the beginning of a major work that achieves the description of such a significant part of the history of natural sciences in Argentina.
