Three new transition metal complexes using 2-pyrimidineamidoxime (pmadH(2)) as multidentate chelating and/or bridging ligand have been synthesized and characterized. The ligand pmadH(2) has two potential bridging functional groups mu-O and mu-(N-O)] and consequently shows several coordination modes. While a polymeric 1D Cu-II complex Cu(pmadH(2))(2)(NO3)](NO3) (1) was obtained upon treatment of Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O with pmadH(2) at room temperature in the absence of base, a high temperature reaction in the presence of base yielded a tetranuclear Cu-II-complex Cu-4(pmad)(2)(pmadH)(2)(NO3)](NO3)(H2O) (2). One of the Cu-II centers is in a square pyramidal environment while the other three are in a square planar geometry. Reaction of the same ligand with an equimolar mixture of both Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and NiCl2 center dot 6H(2)O yielded a tetranuclear heterometallic (Cu2Ni2II)-Ni-II complex Cu2Ni2(pmad)(2)(pmadH)(2)Cl-2]center dot H2O (3) containing both square planar (Ni-II) and square pyramidal (Cu-II) metal centers. Complexes 1-3 represent the first examples of polynuclear metal complexes of 2-pyrimidineamidoxime. The analysis of variable temperature magnetic susceptibility data of 2 reveals that both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions exist in this complex (J(1) = +10.7 cm(-1) and J(2) = -2.7 cm(-1) with g = 2.1) leading to a resultant ferromagnetic behavior. Complex 3 shows expected antiferromagnetic interaction between two Cu-II centers through -N-O- bridging pathway with J(1) = -3.4 cm(-1) and g = 2.08. DFT calculations have been used to corroborate the magnetic results.

The diruthenium(III) complex [Ru2O(O2CAr)2(MeCN)4(PPh3)2](ClO4)2 (1), on reaction with 1,2-diaminoethane (en) in MeOH at 25-degrees-C, undergoes nucleophilic attacks at the carbon of two facial MeCN ligands to form [(Ru2O)-O-III(O2CAr)2-{NH2CH2CH2NHC(Me)NH}2(PPh3)2](ClO4)2 (2) (Ar = C6H4-p-X, X = H, Me, OMe, Cl) containing two seven-membered amino-amidine chelating ligands. The molecular structure of 2 with Ar = C6H4-p-OMe was determined by X-ray crystallography. Crystal data are as follows: triclinic, P1BAR, a = 13.942 (5) angstrom, b = 14.528 (2) angstrom, c = 21.758 (6) angstrom, alpha = 109.50 (2)-degrees, beta = 92.52 (3)-degrees, gamma = 112.61 (2)-degrees, V = 3759 (2) angstrom 3, and Z = 2. The complex has an {Ru2(mu-O)(mu-O2CAr2)2(2+)} core. The Ru-Ru and average Ru-O(oxo) distances and the Ru-O-Ru angle are 3.280 (2) angstrom, 1.887 [8] angstrom, and 120.7 (4)-degrees, respectively. The amino group of the chelating ligand is trans to the mu-oxo ligand. The nucleophilic attacks take place on the MeCN ligands cis to the mu-oxo ligand. The visible spectra of 2 in CHCl3 display an absorption band at 565 nm. The H-1 NMR spectra of 2 in CDCl3 are indicative of the formation of an amino-amidine ligand. Complex 2 exhibits metal-centered quasireversible one-electron oxidation and reduction processes in the potential ranges +0.9 to +1.0 V and -0.3 to -0.5 V (vs SCE), respectively, involving the Ru(III)2/Ru(III)Ru(IV) and Ru(III)2/Ru(II)Ru(III) redox couples in CH2Cl2 containing 0.1 M TBAP. The mechanistic aspects of the nucleophilic reaction are discussed.

The title complex has been prepared from a reaction of [Ru2O(O22CMe)2 (MeCN)4(PPH3)2](ClO4)2 with N,N-dimethyl-1,2-diaminoethane (dmen) in MeOH. The crystal structure of [Ru2O(O2CMe)2(dmen)2(PPh3)2](ClO4)2.MeOH shows the presence of a [Ru2(mu-O)(mu-O2CMe)2]2+ core. The terminal ligands on each metal are a PPh3 and a bidentate chelating dmen. The Ru-Ru distance and Ru-O-Ru angle in the core are 3.271(2) angstrom and 120.9(4)-degrees. The more electron-donating site of the dmen ligand is bonded at the terminal sites trans to the mu-oxo ligand. The complex displays a visible absorption band at 566 nm (epsilon, 6960 M-1 cm-1) in MeCN and undergoes a nearly reversible one-electron oxidation at 1.02 V and an irreversible reduction at -0.52 V (vs SCE) in MeCN-0.1 M [NBu4n](ClO4).

The reactions of the mononuclear cyclodiphosphazane complexes, cis-[Mo(CO)(4){cis-[PhNP(OR)](2)}(2)] with [Mo(CO)(4)(nbd)] (nbd = norbornadiene). [Mo(CO)(4)(NHC5H10)(2)] or [MCl(2)(cod)] (cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) afforded the homobimetallic complexes; [Mo-2(CO)(8){mu-cis-[PhNP(OR)](2)}(2)] (R = C(5)H(4)Me-p 5 or CH2CF3 6) or the heterobimetallic complexes. [Mo-2(CO)(8){mu-cis-[PhNP(OE)](2)}(2)MCl(2)] (R = C(6)H(4)Me-p; M = Pd 7 or Pt 8). In all the above complexes, the two metal moieties are bridged by two cyclodiphosphazane ligands. The reactions of the mononuclear complexes, cis-[M(CO)(4)(A){cis-[PhNP(OC(6)H(4)Me-p)](2)}] with (M'Cl-2(cod)] afforded the trinuclear complexes, cis-[M'Cl-2[M(CO)(4)(A){cis-[PhNP(OC(6)H(4)Me-p)](2)}](2)] (M' = Pd, M = Mo, A = P(OMe)(3) 10; M' = Pt, M = Mo. The 1:1 and 1:2 cooper(II) complexes with the tridentate compound bis(benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)amine (L(1)) and its benzimidazole (L(2)) and amine (L(3)) N-methyl-substituted derivatives have been prepared and their spectroscopic properties studied. While the 1:1 complexes are of the type CuLX(2) nH(2)O (X = C/O-4(-), NO3-, Cl- or Br-), the 1:2 complexes are of the type CuL(2) (ClO4)(2) nH(2)O (L = L(1) or L(3), n = 0-4). In all these complexes L acts as a tridentate ligand with the amine nitrogen and both the benzimidazole nitrogens co-ordinating to Cu-II. The complex [CuL(2)(1)][ClO4](2) 2H(2)O crystallises in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with a = 9.828(2), b = 9.546(2) and c = 19.906(2) Angstrom and beta = 95.71(1)degrees, for Z = 2. The R value is 0.0635 for 2180 significant reflections. The copper(II) ion has an elongated octahedral geometry with four equatorial benzimidazole and two long-distance axial amine N donors. The Cu-N-bzim and Cu-N-amine distances are 2.011(4) and 2.597(6) Angstrom respectively. Factors favouring facial co-ordination to tridentate ligands are discussed. The 1:1 complexes involve meridonal co-ordination of the ligands, with square-based geometry as revealed by ligand-field and EPR spectral properties. The NMe substitution as in CuL(3)(ClO4)(2) confers low V ($) over tilde$$(max) and high E(1/2) for the cu(II)-Cu-I couple. Most of the 1:1 complexes are less reversible but exhibit E(1/2) values more positive than those of the corresponding 1:2 complexes.

The use of fac-[Mo(CO)(3)(MeCN)(eta(2)-L(1))] (1a) {L(1) = Ph(2)PN(Pr-i)PPh(DMP)}(2) as a precursor to metalloligands and bimetallic, heterotrimetallic, and heptacoordinated complexes is reported. The reaction of 1a with diphosphazane, dppa, or a diphosphinoalkane such as dppm or dppe yields the fac-eta(1)-diphosphine substituted metalloligands, fac-[Mo(CO)(3)(eta(2)-L(1))(eta(1)-PXP)] {PXP = dppa (2), dppm (3), and dppe (4)}. These undergo isomerization to yield the corresponding mer-diphosphine complexes (5-7). Oxidation of the uncoordinated phosphorus atom of the mer-eta(1)-dppm-substituted complex eventually provides mer-[Mo(CO)(3)-(eta(2)-L(1)){eta(1)-Ph(2)PCH(2)P(O)Ph(2)}](8). The structure of the latter complex has been confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction {triclinic system, P ($) over bar 1; a = 11.994(3), b = 14.807(2), c = 15.855(3) Angstrom; alpha = 114.24(1), beta = 91.35(2), and gamma = 98.95(1)degrees; Z = 2, 4014 data (F-0 > 5 sigma(F-0)), R = 0.066, R(W) = 0.069}. Treatment of the dppe metalloligand 7 with [PtCl2(COD)] yields the heterotrimetallic complex cis-[PtCl2{mer-[Mo(CO)(3)(eta(2)-L(1))(eta(1)-dppe]}(2)] (9). Attempts to prepare a related trimetallic complex with the dppm-containing metalloligand were unsuccessful; only the tetracarbonyl complex cis-[Mo(CO)(4)(eta(2)-L(1))] (1b) and cis-[PtCl2(eta(2)-dppm)] were obtained. Reaction of la with dppe in the ratio 2:1 yields the mer-mer dinuclear complex [{mer-[Mo(CO)(3)(eta(2)-L(1))]}(2)(mu-dppe)] (10) bridged by dppe. Oxidation of 1a with iodine yields the Mo(II) heptacoordinated complex [MoI2(CO)(2)(eta(3)-L(1))] (11) with tridentate PPN coordination. The same Mo(II) complex 11 is also obtained by the direct oxidation of the tetracarbonyl complex cis-[Mo(CO)(4)(eta(2)-L(1))] (1b) with iodine. The structure of 11 has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies {monoclinic system, Cc; a = 10.471(2), b = 19.305(3), c = 17.325(3) Angstrom; beta = 95.47(2)degrees; Z = 4, 3153 data (F-0 > 5 sigma(F-0)), R = 0.049, R(W) = 0.051}. This complex exhibits an unusual capped-trigonal prismatic geometry around the metal. A similar heptacoordinated complex 12 with a chiral diphosphazane ligand {L(3) = (S,R)-P(h)2PN-(*CHMePh)*PPh(DMP)} has also been synthesized.

The lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazanes, [EtNP(OR)](3) [R = 2,6-Me2C6H3 (1), 4-BrC6H4 (2), or CH2CF3(3)], on treatment with tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone (TCB) give the lambda(5)-cyclodiphosphazanes, [EtNP(O2C6Cl4)(OR)][EtNP(O2C6Cl4){N(Et)P(OR)(2)}] (5-7) by an unusual ring contraction-rearrangement. The reaction of the mixed substituent lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazane, [(EtN)(3)P-3(OR)(2)(OR')] [R = 2,6-Me2C6H3, R' = 4-BrC6H4] (4), with TCB gives the lambda(5)-cyclodiphosphazane, [EtNP(O2C6Cl4)(OR')][EtNP(O2C6Cl4){N(Et)P(OR)(2)}] (8), in which 4-bromophenoxide resides on one of the ring phosphorus atoms. The lambda(3)-bicyclic tetraphosphapentazane, (EtN)(5)P-4(OPh)(2), on treatment with TCB undergoes a double ring contraction-rearrangement to give the lambda(5)-cyclodiphosphazane, (EtN)[(EtN)(2)P-2(O2C6Cl4)(2)(OPh)](2) (9). Variable-temperature and high-field P-31 NMR studies indicate the presence of more than one isomer in solution for the rearranged products 5-9. The solid state structure of 8 reveals a trans arrangement of the substituents with respect to the P2N2 ring in contrast to the gauche arrangement observed for 5.

The effect of host glass composition on the optical absorption and fluorescence spectra of Nd3+ has been studied in mixed alkali borate glasses of the type xNa(2)O-(30-x)K2O-69.5B(2)O(3)-0.5Nd(2)O(3) (X = 5,10,15,20 and 25). Various spectroscopic parameters such as Racah (E-1, E-2 and E-3), spin-orbit (xi(4f)) and configuration interaction (alpha, beta) parameters have been calculated. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters (Omega(lambda)) have been calculated and the radiative transition probabilities (A(rad)), radiative lifetimes (tau(r)), branching ratios (beta) and integrated absorption cross sections (Sigma) have been obtained for certain excited states of the Nd3+, ion and are discussed with respect to x. From the fluorescence spectra, the effective fluorescence line widths (Deltalambda(eff)) and stimulated emission cross sections (sigma(p)) have been obtained for the three transitions F-4(3/2) --> I-4(9/2), F-4(3/2) --> I-4(11/2) and F-4(3/2) --> I-4(13/2) of Nd3+. The stimulated emission cross section (sigma(p)) values are found to be in the range (2.0-4.8) x 10(-2)0 cm(2) and they are large enough to indicate that the mixed alkali borate glasses could be potential laser host materials.

3-(2,3-Dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (DMPP) a potential second harmonic generating (SHG) has been synthesized and grown as a single crystal by the slow evaporation technique at ambient temperature. The structure determination of the grown crystal was done by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. DMPP crystallizes with orthorhombic system with cell parameters a = 20.3106(8)angstrom, b = 4.9574(2)angstrom, c = 13.4863(5)angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees and space group Pca2(1). The crystals were characterized by FT-IR, thermal analysis, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and SHG measurements. Various functional groups present in DMPP were ascertained by FTIR analysis. DMPP is thermally stable up to 80 degrees C and optically transparent in the visible region. The crystal exhibits SHG efficiency comparable to that of KDP. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study N = 2 compactifications of heterotic string theory on the CHL orbifold (K3 x T-2)/Z(N) with N = 2, 3, 5, 7. Z(N) acts as an automorphism on K3 together with a shift of 1/N along one of the circles of T-2. These compactifications generalize the example of the heterotic string on K3 x T-2 studied in the context of dualities in string theories. We evaluate the new supersymmetric index for these theories and show that their expansion can be written in terms of the McKay-Thompson series associated with the Z(N) automorphism embedded in the Mathieu group M-24. We then evaluate the difference in one-loop threshold corrections to the non-Abelian gauge couplings with Wilson lines and show that their moduli dependence is captured by Siegel modular forms related to dyon partition functions of N = 4 string theories.

Sheet resistance of laser-irradiated Ge2Sb2Te5 thin films prepared by magnetron sputtering was measured by the four-point probe method. With increasing laser power the sheet resistance undergoes an abrupt drop from 10(7) to 10(3) Omega/square at about 580 mW. The abrupt drop in resistance is due to the structural change from amorphous to crystalline state as revealed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) study of the samples around the abrupt change point. Crystallized dots were also formed in the amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 films by focused short pulse laser-irradiated, the resistivities at the crystallized dots and the non-crystallized area are 3.375 x 10(-3) and 2.725 Omega m, sheet resistance is 3.37 x 10(4) and 2.725 x 10(7) Omega/square respectively, deduced from the I-V Curves that is obtained by conductive atomic force microscope (C-AFM). Visible upconversion luminescence was observed in Cr3+: Al2O3 crystal under focused femtosecond laser irradiation. The luminescence spectra show that the upconversion luminescence originates from the E-2-(4)A(2) transition of Cr3+. The dependence of the fluorescence intensity of Cr3+ on the pump power reveals that a two-photon absorption process dominates in the conversion of infrared radiation to the visible emission. It is suggested that the simultaneous absorption of two infrared photons produces the population of upper excited states, which leads to the characteristic visible emission from E-2 state of Cr3+.
