Therapy of Venezuelan patients with severe mucocutaneous or early lesions of diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis with a vaccine containing pasteurized Leishmania promastigotes and bacillus Calmette-Guerin: preliminary report

Severe mucocutaneous (MCL) and diffuse (DCL) forms of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) are infrequent in Venezuela. Chemotherapy produces only transitory remission in DCL, and occasional treatment failures are observed in MCL. We have evaluated therapy with an experimental vaccine in patients with severe leishmaniasis. Four patients with MCL and 3 with early DCL were treated with monthly intradermal injections of a vaccine containing promastigotes of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis killed by pasteurization and viable Bacillus Calmette- Guerin. Clinical and immunological responses were evaluated. Integrity of protein constituents in extracts of pasteurized promastigotes was evaluated by gel electrophoresis. Complete remission of lesions occurred after 5-9 injections in patients with MCL or 7-10 injections in patients with early DCL. DCL patients developed positive skin reactions, average size 18.7 mm. All have been free of active lesions for at least 10 months. Adverse effects of the vaccine were limited to local reactivity to BCG at the injection sites and fever in 2 patients. Extracts of pasteurized and fresh promastigotes did not reveal differences in the integrity of protein components detectable by gel electrophoresis. Immunotherapy with this modified vaccine offers an effective, safe option for the treatment of patients who do not respond to immunotherapy with vaccine containing autoclaved parasites or to chemotherapy .

A viscous bioerodible poly(ortho ester) as a new biomaterial for intraocular application.

The biocompatibility of a viscous, hydrophobic, bioerodible poly(ortho ester) (POE) intended for intraocular application was investigated. POE was evaluated as a blank carrier and as containing modulators of degradation. Each formulation was injected intracamerally and intravitreally in rabbit eyes, and clinical and histological examinations were performed postoperatively for 2 weeks. In the case of intracameral injections, polymer biocompatibility appeared to depend on the amount injected in the anterior chamber. When 50 microL was administered, the polymer degraded within 2 weeks, and clinical observations showed good biocompatibility of POE with no toxicity to the ocular tissues or increase in intraocular pressure. The injection of a larger volume, 100 microL, of POE, appeared inappropriate because of direct contact of polymeric material with the corneal endothelium, and triggered reversible edema and inflammation in the anterior chamber of the eye that regressed after a few days. After intravitreal administration, POE was well tolerated and no inflammatory reaction developed during the observation period. The polymer degraded slowly, appearing as a round whitish bubble in the vitreous cavity. The presence of modulators of degradation both improved POE biocompatibility and prolonged polymer lifetime in the eye. POE appears to be a promising biomaterial for clinical intraocular application.

Construcció i explotació d'un magatzem de dades per a l'anàlisi d'informació immobiliària

Aquest projecte consisteix en facilitar a l'empresa Sostre per a tothom l'anàlisi del seu catàleg d'immobles a Andorra i Espanya. Per poder oferir aquesta visió estratègica, es proposa la creació d'un nou magatzem de dades corporatiu, estructurat de tal manera que faciliti l'explotació d'aquesta informació pel seu anàlisis posterior, per tal d'ajudar en la pressa de decisions. Com a resultat del projecte s'obtenen tres productes; el propi magatzem de dades corporatiu, l'aplicació batch que executa el procés per poblar aquest magatzem i una bateria d'informes inicials que facilitaran la interpretació d'aquesta informació.

Construcción y explotación de un almacén de datos para el análisis de información inmobiliaria

El objetivo de este Trabajo Final de Carrera (TFC) es consolidar los conocimientos adquiridos a lo largo de nuestros estudios de Ingeniería Técnica en Informática de Sistemas. Es un documento que contiene el enunciado de un problema del mundo real, que se describe, desgrana, analiza, etc, y que al final se detalla la solución técnica final escogida. Este Trabajo Final de Carrera, a partir de ahora TFC, está enmarcado dentro del área de Almacenes de Datos, utilizando el siguiente software: ORACLE EXPRESS v10.2.0.1 y SQL DEVELOPER. La empresa inmobiliaria Un Techo para Todos, tiene un catalogo de inmuebles de España y Andorra. Necesitan un sistema de información que le permita comparar diferentes zonas, tipos de pisos y precios, para intentar ser más eficientes ajustando la oferta y la demanda, y por consiguiente obteniendo mayores beneficios. El principal problema que nos plantean es que aunque disponen de mucha información, esta no la tienen integrada en un sistema informático optimo( lo tienen en unas hojas de Excel), por lo que no pueden sacarle el rendimiento adecuado.

El presente proyecto surge como encargo de la inmobiliaria Un techo para todos para la realización de un almacén de datos con la información de las propiedades de las que dispone. Mediante el uso del mismo la empresa quiere disponer de información que le permita comparar precios y características entre zonas y tipologías, para de esta manera adaptar su oferta a la demanda existente y obtener así una ventaja competitiva respecto a otras empresas del sector.

GPASens : Gestión y Planificación de Acciones de Sensibilización

Proyecto de aplicación web que permite gestionar la información de los eventos de las acciones de sensibilización de las organizaciones sociales y realizar un seguimiento a las entidades interesadas en acoger o participar en los eventos. También permite consultar la información de los eventos de las actividades en un mapa, definir los recursos y materiales necesarios y referenciar los diferentes documentos, vídeos, audios o imágenes relacionadas con los eventos.

Ultrasound-guided suprascapular nerve block, description of a novel supraclavicular approach.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The suprascapular nerve (SSN) block is frequently performed for different shoulder pain conditions and for perioperative and postoperative pain control after shoulder surgery. Blind and image-guided techniques have been described, all of which target the nerve within the supraspinous fossa or at the suprascapular notch. This classic target point is not always ideal when ultrasound (US) is used because it is located deep under the muscles, and hence the nerve is not always visible. Blocking the nerve in the supraclavicular region, where it passes underneath the omohyoid muscle, could be an attractive alternative. METHODS: In the first step, 60 volunteers were scanned with US, both in the supraclavicular and the classic target area. The visibility of the SSN in both regions was compared. In the second step, 20 needles were placed into or immediately next to the SSN in the supraclavicular region of 10 cadavers. The accuracy of needle placement was determined by injection of dye and following dissection. RESULTS: In the supraclavicular region of volunteers, the nerve was identified in 81% of examinations (95% confidence interval [CI], 74%-88%) and located at a median depth of 8 mm (interquartile range, 6-9 mm). Near the suprascapular notch (supraspinous fossa), the nerve was unambiguously identified in 36% of examinations (95% CI, 28%-44%) (P < 0.001) and located at a median depth of 35 mm (interquartile range, 31-38 mm; P < 0.001). In the cadaver investigation, the rate of correct needle placement of the supraclavicular approach was 95% (95% CI, 86%-100%). CONCLUSIONS: Visualization of the SSN with US is better in the supraclavicular region as compared with the supraspinous fossa. The anatomic dissections confirmed that our novel supraclavicular SSN block technique is accurate.

Fidelidad al modelo especificado en el código generado automáticamente por la herramienta CASE Poseidon for UML

L'objectiu principal d'aquest treball és estudiar el grau de fidelitat al model especificat que manté el codi generat automàticament per l'eina CASE Poseidon Professional for UML. Concretament, estudiarem el codi que es genera en Java i SQL mitjançant un diagrama de classes determinat.

TFC .NET : sistema catalogador d'imatges

El TFC que aquí s'exposa ha volgut ser, sobretot, un punt de trobada on poder explorar, de manera pràctica, aquests nous paradigmes de programació iconcretament, les solucions que ofereix la plataforma .NET de Microsoft a través de les seves tecnologies Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Language Integrades Query (LINQ) i la seva vessant, LINQ to SQL.

Immunological tolerance to pig-serum partially inhibits the formation of septal fibrosis of the liver in Capillaria hepatica-infected rats

Systhematized septal fibrosis of the liver can be induced in rats either by repeated intraperitoneal injections of pig-serum or by Capillaria hepatica infection. The relationship between these two etiological factors, as far as hepatic fibrosis is concerned, is not known, and present investigation attempts to investigate it. C. hepatica-induced septal fibrosis of the liver was considerably inhibited in rats previously rendered tolerant to pig-serum. Pig-serum-tolerant rats developed antibodies against pig-serum when infected with C. hepatica, but this did not happen when the infection occurred in normal rats. On the other hand, anti-C. hepatica antibodies failed to recognize any epitope in pig-serum, by Western blot. However, no evidence of an immunological cross reactivity was found, at least at the humoral level. Alternatively, cell-mediated mechanisms may be involved, and further investigations are warranted.

Generació, actualització y consulta de bases de dades relacionals utilitzant XML (Servei d'emmagatzemament de dades a internet)

El que es vol, en aquest projecte, és generar una sèrie d'eines que permetin a una entitat externa d'interactuar en una base de dades relacional sense necessitat de coneixements específics sobre bases de dades. Quan es diu interactuar, s'hi inclou des de la creació de la base de dades fins a la consulta de la informació, passant per l'actualització d'aquesta base de dades.

Els objectius principals d'aquest projecte són analitzar i descartar algunes dels llenguatges de consulta, gestors relacionals i reposadors que s'estan utilitzant més habitualment en l'entorn de la Web Semàntica. Amb l'estudi de les principals tecnologies implicades en la Web Semàntica es tractarà de realitzar una aplicació que permeti el maneig de dades d'un graf RDF.
