Role of HuR in skeletal myogenesis through coordinate regulation of muscle differentiation genes

In this report, we investigate the role of the RNA-binding protein HuR during skeletal myogenesis. At the onset of myogenesis in differentiating C2C12 myocytes and in vivo in regenerating mouse muscle, HuR cytoplasmic abundance increased dramatically, returning to a predominantly nuclear presence upon completion of myogenesis. mRNAs encoding key regulators of myogenesis-specific transcription (myogenin and MyoD) and cell cycle withdrawal (p21), bearing AU-rich regions, were found to be targets of HuR in a differentiation-dependent manner. Accordingly, mRNA half-lives were highest during differentiation, declining when differentiation was completed. Importantly, HuR-overexpressing C2C12 cells displayed increased target mRNA expression and half-life and underwent precocious differentiation. Our findings underscore a critical function for HuR during skeletal myogenesis linked to HuR's coordinate regulation of muscle differentiation genes.

Opening windows into the mind: mothers' preferences for mental state explanations and children's theory of mind

A new questionnaire, the Maternal Mental State Input Inventory (MMSII) was created to measure mothers' preferences for introducing and elaborating on mental states in conversation with their young children. In two studies, the questionnaire was given to mothers of young children, and the children's theory of mind (ToM) development was assessed with standard tasks. In both studies, the questionnaire exhibited good internal reliability, and significant correlations emerged between mothers' self-reported preferences for elaborated, explanatory talk about the mental states and children's theory of mind performance. Further, mothers' conversational preferences, as measured by the MMSII, were the best predictors of children's theory of mind development when relevant control variables were included in the analyses. These results converge with naturalistic observational research that has demonstrated links between mothers' conversational styles and their children's theory of mind. They go further in suggesting that mothers' tendencies toward elaborated, explanatory talk about a range of mental states is particularly beneficial to children's theory of mind development. Phase equilibria and surface tension of pure fluids using a molecular layer structure theory (MLST) model

This paper presents a new model based on thermodynamic and molecular interaction between molecules to describe the vapour-liquid phase equilibria and surface tension of pure component. The model assumes that the bulk fluid can be characterised as set of parallel layers. Because of this molecular structure, we coin the model as the molecular layer structure theory (MLST). Each layer has two energetic components. One is the interaction energy of one molecule of that layer with all surrounding layers. The other component is the intra-layer Helmholtz free energy, which accounts for the internal energy and the entropy of that layer. The equilibrium between two separating phases is derived from the minimum of the grand potential, and the surface tension is calculated as the excess of the Helmholtz energy of the system. We test this model with a number of components, argon, krypton, ethane, n-butane, iso-butane, ethylene and sulphur hexafluoride, and the results are very satisfactory. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Quantum theory of the far-off-resonance continuous-wave Raman laser: Heisenberg-Langevin approach

We present the quantum theory of the far-off-resonance continuous-wave Raman laser using the Heisenberg-Langevin approach. We show that the simplified quantum Langevin equations for this system are mathematically identical to those of the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator in the time domain with the following associations: pump pump, Stokes signal, and Raman coherence idler. We derive analytical results for both the steady-state behavior and the time-dependent noise spectra, using standard linearization procedures. In the semiclassical limit, these results match with previous purely semiclassical treatments, which yield excellent agreement with experimental observations. The analytical time-dependent results predict perfect photon statistics conversion from the pump to the Stokes and nonclassical behavior under certain operational conditions.

Wall mediated transport in confined spaces: Exact theory for low density

We present a theory for the transport of molecules adsorbed in slit and cylindrical nanopores at low density, considering the axial momentum gain of molecules oscillating between diffuse wall reflections. Good agreement with molecular dynamics simulations is obtained over a wide range of pore sizes, including the regime of single-file diffusion where fluid-fluid interactions are shown to have a negligible effect on the collective transport coefficient. We show that dispersive fluid-wall interactions considerably attenuate transport compared to classical hard sphere theory.

Neural reflex regulation of arterial pressure in pathophysiological conditions : interplay among the baroreflex, the cardiopulmonary reflexes and the chemoreflex

The maintenance of arterial pressure at levels adequate to perfuse the tissues is a basic requirement for the constancy of the internal environment and survival. The objective of the present review was to provide information about the basic reflex mechanisms that are responsible for the moment-to-moment regulation of the cardiovascular system. We demonstrate that this control is largely provided by the action of arterial and non-arterial reflexes that detect and correct changes in arterial pressure (baroreflex), blood volume or chemical composition (mechano- and chemosensitive cardiopulmonary reflexes), and changes in blood-gas composition (chemoreceptor reflex). The importance of the integration of these cardiovascular reflexes is well understood and it is clear that processing mainly occurs in the nucleus tractus solitarii, although the mechanism is poorly understood. There are several indications that the interactions of baroreflex, chemoreflex and Bezold-Jarisch reflex inputs, and the central nervous system control the activity of autonomic preganglionic neurons through parallel afferent and efferent pathways to achieve cardiovascular homeostasis. It is surprising that so little appears in the literature about the integration of these neural reflexes in cardiovascular function. Thus, our purpose was to review the interplay between peripheral neural reflex mechanisms of arterial blood pressure and blood volume regulation in physiological and pathophysiological states. Special emphasis is placed on the experimental model of arterial hypertension induced by N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) in which the interplay of these three reflexes is demonstrable.

Em busca de contribuições Schumpeterianas à Teoria da Regulação : as telecomunicações brasileiras numa perspectiva evolucionária

A partir da década de 1970, a literatura que trata daqueles setores de infraestrutura, cujo funcionamento requer um acompanhamento específico do Estado, vale dizer através da regulação, absorveu grande parte dos conceitos fundamentais desenvolvidos pelas escolas institucionalistas, notadamente pela Nova Economia Institucional (NEI). Entretanto, apesar dos avanços alcançados, esta literatura ainda carece de alguns desenvolvimentos teóricos e estudos empíricos que contribuam de forma decisiva. Tais questões estão ligadas, por exemplo, à evolução dos cenários e às condições econômicas que são alteradas a partir de mudanças significativas nas condições tecnológicas e que acabam por alterar significativamente aquela estrutura industrial para qual o modelo regulatório foi desenhado. Nesse sentido, as contribuições da Economia da Regulação e da NEI carecem de elementos evolucionários, notadamente schumpeterianos. O principal objetivo da dissertação é investigar como alguns elementos de inspiração schumpeteriana podem em algum grau ser aplicados à economia da regulação e neste sentido contribuir com proposições naqueles temas que essa escola fincou sua abordagem característica: o progresso tecnológico e o comportamento estratégico inovativo das empresas. Nesse sentido, o problema de pesquisa desse trabalho pode ser assim colocado: como pode ser entendido o papel do progresso tecnológico e da inovação nas teorias da regulação? A hipótese assumida neste trabalho é que não se pode desconsiderar a tecnologia e suas diversas implicações para a análise dos setores regulados, constatação essa cada vez mais clara, dadas as recentes transformações dessas indústrias: uma das principais características dos setores regulados, a partir da década de 1990, é o surgimento de novos marcos regulatórios e uma alteração progressiva dos modelos organizacionais que predominavam até então e um movimento de adaptação à margem da regulação vigente. Os resultados empíricos mostram que as transformações tecnológicas e institucionais ocorridas a partir de 1995 na indústria brasileira de telecomunicações alteraram significativamente a estrutura industrial e a dinâmica concorrencial do setor, colocando ao desenho regulatório – da Anatel – novos e complexos desafios, sobretudo, o de se adaptar à margem da dinamicidade característica das telecomunicações. Neste novo contexto, as funções regulatórias são mais complexas, o que exige um duplo processo de aprendizagem: quanto às estruturas de mercado e quanto ao comportamento estratégico das empresas.

Educação, currículo escolar e violência simbólica : um estudo de caso sobre adolescentes atendidos pelo Centro de Referência Especializado de Assistência Social–CREAS/ES (2010-2014)

Esta dissertação inscreve-se no debate sobre educação e política, voltado para análise da relação entre educação, currículo escolar e violência simbólica, na perspectiva do adolescente entre 12 e 17 anos que cumpre medida socioeducativa no Centro de Referência Especializado de Assistência Social – CREAS de Vitória (ES). Tem por objetivo analisar e refletir sobre a inadequação curricular no que se refere às expectativas desses adolescentes. A hipótese sustentada é que há inadequação curricular de um modo geral e, em particular, para atender à condição dos alunos em cumprimento de medida socioeducativa. A pesquisa demonstra que existe uma discrepância grande entre a regulamentação das medidas e a prática no cotidiano escolar desses adolescentes, e um dos grandes entraves para essa adequação é a ausência de protagonismo, ou seja, os professores que trabalham com esses adolescentes e o próprio adolescente não foram ouvidos para a formulação das propostas. Resultado disso é uma escola totalmente desinteressante para esses adolescentes e ineficaz do ponto de vista pedagógico. Teoricamente, o fio condutor desta análise teve como base a violência simbólica a partir de Bourdieu e Passeron e as discussões feitas por Apple e Candau.

Exploring the interplay between Framing and Securitization theory: the case of the Arab Spring protests in Bahrain

This article advances the theoretical integration between securitization theory and the framing approach, resulting in a set of criteria hereby called security framing. It seeks to make a twofold contribution: to sharpen the study of the ideational elements that underlie the construction of threats, and to advance towards a greater assessment of the audience's preferences. The case study under examination is the 2011 military intervention of the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Bahrain. The security framing of this case will help illuminate the dynamics at play in one of the most important recent events in Gulf politics.

Applying complex network theory to the understanding of high-aspect-ratio carbon-filled composites

This work demonstrates that the theoretical framework of complex networks typically used to study systems such as social networks or the World Wide Web can be also applied to material science, allowing deeper understanding of fundamental physical relationships. In particular, through the application of the network theory to carbon nanotubes or vapour-grown carbon nanofiber composites, by mapping fillers to vertices and edges to the gap between fillers, the percolation threshold has been predicted and a formula that relates the composite conductance to the network disorder has been obtained. The theoretical arguments are validated by experimental results from the literature.
