Debris flow magnitudes: a global catalog

The episodic occurrence of debris flow events in response to stochastic precipitation and wildfire events makes hazard prediction challenging. Previous work has shown that frequency-magnitude distributions of non-fire-related debris flows follow a power law, but less is known about the distribution of post-fire debris flows. As a first step in parameterizing hazard models, we use frequency-magnitude distributions and cumulative distribution functions to compare volumes of post-fire debris flows to non-fire-related debris flows. Due to the large number of events required to parameterize frequency-magnitude distributions, and the relatively small number of post-fire event magnitudes recorded in the literature, we collected data on 73 recent post-fire events in the field. The resulting catalog of 988 debris flow events is presented as an appendix to this article. We found that the empirical cumulative distribution function of post-fire debris flow volumes is composed of smaller events than that of non-fire-related debris flows. In addition, the slope of the frequency-magnitude distribution of post-fire debris flows is steeper than that of non-fire-related debris flows, evidence that differences in the post-fire environment tend to produce a higher proportion of small events. We propose two possible explanations: 1) post-fire events occur on shorter return intervals than debris flows in similar basins that do not experience fire, causing their distribution to shift toward smaller events due to limitations in sediment supply, or 2) fire causes changes in resisting and driving forces on a package of sediment, such that a smaller perturbation of the system is required in order for a debris flow to occur, resulting in smaller event volumes.

Involvement of ATP-dependent Pseudomonas Exotoxin Translocation from a Late Recycling Compartment in Lymphocyte Intoxication Procedure

Pseudomonas exotoxin (PE) is a cytotoxin which, after endocytosis, is delivered to the cytosol where it inactivates protein synthesis. Using diaminobenzidine cytochemistry, we found over 94% of internalized PE in transferrin (Tf) -positive endosomes of lymphocytes. When PE translocation was examined in a cell-free assay using purified endocytic vesicles, more than 40% of endosomal 125I-labeled PE was transported after 2 h at 37°C, whereas a toxin inactivated by point mutation in its translocation domain was not translocated. Sorting of endosomes did not allow cell-free PE translocation, whereas active PE transmembrane transport was observed after > 10 min of endocytosis when PE and fluorescent-Tf were localized by confocal immunofluorescence microscopy within a rab5-positive and rab4- and rab7-negative recycling compartment in the pericentriolar region of the cell. Accordingly, when PE delivery to this structure was inhibited using a 20°C endocytosis temperature, subsequent translocation from purified endosomes was impaired. Translocation was also inhibited when endosomes were obtained from cells labeled with PE in the presence of brefeldin A, which caused fusion of translocation-competent recycling endosomes with translocation-incompetent sorting elements. No PE processing was observed in lymphocyte endosomes, the full-sized toxin was translocated and recovered in an enzymatically active form. ATP hydrolysis was found to directly provide the energy required for PE translocation. Inhibitors of endosome acidification (weak bases, protonophores, or bafilomycin A1) when added to the assay did not significantly affect 125I-labeled PE translocation, demonstrating that this transport is independent of the endosome-cytosol pH gradient. Nevertheless, when 125I-labeled PE endocytosis was performed in the presence of one of these molecules, translocation from endosomes was strongly inhibited, indicating that exposure to acidic pH is a prerequisite for PE membrane traversal. When applied during endocytosis, treatments that protect cells against PE intoxication (low temperatures, inhibitors of endosome acidification, and brefeldin A) impaired 125I-labeled PE translocation from purified endosomes. We conclude that PE translocation from a late receptor recycling compartment is implicated in the lymphocyte intoxication procedure.

When we use a proper name, by virtue of what do we succeed in saying something about an individual? In other words, how are we supposed to explain the seemingly trivial fact that by uttering “Aristotle was wise” we actually predicate something of the famous philosopher? Questions like these have animated a fervent debate among philosophers of language; however, nowadays the standard answer is that by using “Aristotle” we say something about that famous philosopher because the name we have used in our utterance refers to him. Even though no general consensus has been reached on how to characterize the relation of reference – there are still different and competing accounts of the latter on the philosophical market – almost everybody believes, especially after the publication of Saul Kripke’s "Naming and necessity", that reference is the only semantic relation that connects our uses of proper names to individuals in the world. Contrary to this widespread assumption, in this dissertation I shall claim that our uses of proper names are not always referential.

The Politics of Re-(en)visioning: Contemporary British Rewritings of Greek and Roman Tragedies

This thesis examines three different kinds of socio-political rewritings of Greek and Roman tragedies – Sarah Kane’s “Phaedra’s Love”, Tony Harrison’s “Prometheus”, and Martin Crimp’s “Cruel and Tender” – written, staged or screened in Britain (and, more precisely, England) between 1996 and 2004. Offering close readings of these re-visionary appropriations, this dissertation analyses some of the innumerable and unexpected forms that ancient tragedy can assume today. In particular, it explores how three talented British authors have subverted the conventions of the noblest literary and dramatic genre in order to (re)write contemporaneity in ways that oscillate between the personal and the public, the local and the global, the national and the transnational.

L’insegnamento dell’italiano come L2 ai bambini stranieri in Italia: quadro generale e studio di un caso particolare, tra teoria e pratica a confronto

Il presente lavoro vuole sensibilizzare al problema socio-linguistico dell’insegnamento dell’italiano come lingua seconda: si mostra un panorama della situazione, partendo dall’insegnamento in sé, presentando le tecniche ed i metodi non finalizzati al mero insegnamento, ma anche all’accoglienza della famiglia e alla crescita serena del bambino appena arrivato; si passa, poi, alla descrizione del contesto in cui opera la didattica interculturale, un contesto che presenta varie problematicità, dal sofferto arrivo in una terra straniera, alla necessità di adattamento nel gruppo dei pari e nel sistema scolastico, sia dal punto sociale che dal punto di vista linguistico. Il soggetto di questa tesina sono i bambini, perché un mondo che funzioni bene deve saper ruotare attorno a loro. I protagonisti del "caso particolare" di cui si parla nel titolo sono due bambini cinesi arrivati in Italia da poco e dei quali viene raccontata la loro prima esperienza di studio dell'italiano nel loro nuovo Paese.

La letteratura cinese per l'infanzia: proposta di traduzione di alcuni capitoli del romanzo "Sulle tracce degli uomini verdi" di Jin Bo

La letteratura per l’infanzia è un mondo ancora poco esplorato e studiato e ciò è particolarmente vero per quelle culture erroneamente considerate molto lontane dalla nostra. È un campo estremamente delicato su cui lavorare in quanto i libri per i bambini hanno, oltre a intrattenerli, lo scopo di educarli e dare loro delle linee guida durante tutto il periodo di crescita. La presente tesi si propone di fornire una traduzione verso l’italiano di alcuni capitoli tratti dal romanzo per bambini Zhuizong Xiao Lüren 追踪小绿人 (Sulle tracce degli omini verdi) dello scrittore Jin Bo 金波 (1935). Il primo capitolo fornisce una descrizione, seppur breve, della letteratura per l’infanzia in Cina, in particolare a partire dagli anni ’70 a oggi. Il secondo capitolo presenta la proposta di traduzione di alcuni capitoli del romanzo e, infine, il terzo capitolo riguarda il relativo commento traduttologico.
