A malária cerebral (MC) é uma das complicações mais graves resultante da infecção por P. falciparum e a principal causa de morte em crianças. O quadro de MC apresenta uma patogênese complexa, associado a complicações neurológicas provenientes de uma resposta imunológica exacerbada, bem como eventos hemorrágicos. Estudos descrevem uma retinopatia associada ao quadro, juntamente com um intenso processo de astrogliose nas proximidades de vasos que nutrem o tecido retiniano. O presente trabalho buscou caracterizar o processo inflamatório e as possíveis alterações neuroquímicas e eletrofisiológicas no tecido retiniano de camundongos albino suíço, quando inoculados com a cepa ANKA de Plasmodium berghei (PbA). Camundongos albino suíço foram infectados com cepa PbA. Para caracterização do quadro de malária cerebral experimental (MCE) foram avaliados diversos parâmetros, como surgimento dos sinais clínicos, curva de sobrevivência, parasitemia (%), ganho de massa corpórea, permeabilidade vascular e quantificação de citocinas (TNF-α, IL-6 e IL-10) no tecido cortical. Para avaliarmos alterações na funcionalidade do tecido retiniano, utilizamos eletrorretinograma de campo total. Para a avaliação dos sistemas de neurotransmissão foi realizado ensaio de liberação e captação de glutamato e GABA que, posteriormente foi quantificado por Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência. Para análise da resposta inflamatória foi realizada a quantificação de citocinas (TNF-α, IL-6 e IL-10) no tecido retiniano. Após a caracterização do quadro de MCE nós observamos a diminuição da amplitude de onda-b de cones e bastonetes, bem como aumento do tempo implícito de bastonetes, respostas mistas em diferentes intensidades e potencial oscilatório. Observamos aumento na liberação e captação de glutamato e, ainda, a ativação de uma via antiinflamatória no tecido retiniano. Este trabalho nos permitiu validar o modelo murino de MCE e caracterizar, pela primeira vez, alterações na funcionalidade do tecido retiniano, acompanhada de alterações no sistema glutamatérgico, bem como ativação de uma via antiinflamatória no tecido retiniano.

Este trabalho trata sobre a calibração de um aparelho baseado na técnica TDR para estudos do fluxo de água em solo não saturado, com base na medição indireta da umidade, sucção matricial (ψ) e condutividade hidráulica não saturada k(ψ), num perfil de solo inalterado. Isto é possível mediante ensaios de laboratório decorrentes da mecânica de solos tradicional e não saturada, a partir de amostras indeformadas retiradas a diferentes profundidades durante a construção de um poço, onde foram instaladas as sondas do TDR. Dos ensaios, obtiveram-se equações polinomiais para relacionar o comportamento da variação do período de tempo do pulso eletromagnético percorrido pela sonda TDR com a variação da umidade do solo e modelos de van Genuchten (1980) para relacionar a umidade com (ψ) e k(ψ). Os resultados mostraram que, para a calibração da umidade neste tipo de solos, um ajuste polinomial de quarto grau se apresenta como melhor alternativa em relação às expressões existentes em lugares onde foram derivadas estas teorias. Adicionalmente, se observou, que as maiores variações de (ψ) e k(ψ). ocorrerão entre a saturação e 10% de umidade devido à peculiaridade da curva de retenção. Finalmente, a presente calibração se apresenta como um expediente útil e prático para estudos hidrodinâmicos de solos não saturados. Statement of problem. Removable partial dentures are affected by fatigue because of the cyclic mechanism of the masticatory system ansi frequent insertion and removal. Titanium and its alloys have been used in the manufacture of denture frameworks; however, preventive agents with fluorides are thought to attack titanium alloy surfaces.Purpose. This study evaluated, compared, analyzed the corrosion-fatigue life of commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy in different storage environments.Material and methods. For each metal, 33 dumbbell rods, 2.3 mm in diameter at the central segment, were cast in the Rematitan system. Corrosion-fatigue strength test was carried out through a universal testing machine with a load 30% lon er than the 0.2% offset yield strength and a combined influence of different: environments: in air at room temperature, with synthetic saliva, and with fluoride synthetic saliva. After failure, the number of cycles were recorded, and fracture surfaces were examined with on SEM.Results. ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison rest indicated that Ti-6Al-4V alloy achieved 21,269 cycles (SD = 8,355) against 19,157 cycles (SD = 3,624) for the commercially purr Ti. There were no significant differences between either metal in the corrosion-fatigue life for dry specimens, but when the solutions were present, the fatigue life was significantly reduced, probably because of the product-ion of corrosion pits caused by superficial reactions.

Insects pests of stored products and by-products are extending their feeding preferences to new items. We report for the first time in Brazil the feeding and reproduction of the cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne F. (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) on stored chamomile, Matricaria recutita L. (Asteraceae). One intact package (10 cm wide x 15 cm long) of M. recutita infested by L. serricorne was purchased in a supermarket in Vicosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this sample this insect had fed on the dried parts (inflorescences and rods), which made the product unfit for human consumption. This 20 g sample included 101 live and 4 dead Lasioderma serricorne. Circumstantial evidence suggested that the infested material was probably harvested from an infested field in Apr 2013 and packaged with L. serricorne eggs, and that these had developed into the adults found in the package.

The increasing demand for productivity and quality in companies has converged to a common point: reducing costs. In this context the present work aims at the development of a mechanical press which is designed for pressing polar hydrogenerators coils with salient pole in field facilitating the assembly of the poles in the plant, as well as reforms especially in hydrogenerators, reducing significantly the transport costs. With security in mind as well as reduced costs, a study was made of the materials to be used as it was applied a methodology for calculating the correct choice of safety factor to be used in the device. Through mechanical calculations were dimensioned critical items of the device as the diameter of the rods as well as the minimum thickness of the base of the device must have so that it does not break threaded shear in the region by applying the total load of traction on the risers implementation of the pressing. All compression loading device will be through the application of torque on the nuts of bolts in this way was defined by calculations the required torque for each nut so that you can reach the pressure specified in the design specifies. The modeling of the device was made using the INVENTOR™ program in conjunction with the program ANSYS ™. These programs have created designs in three dimensions, assembly and simulation of stress analysis in components of the device

The genus Salmonella was characterized in 1885. It is divided into two species and six subspecies or subgenera. Belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae is composed of Gram-negative rods, usually producing mobile gas from glucose, except in those serovars S. gallinarum and S. Pullorum. Salmonela is one of the biggest problems in public health for its wide occurrence in humans and in animals, where they occupy the center of the epidemiology of enteric salmonelosis. These are responsible for significant rates of morbidity and mortality. Several outbreaks of food transmitted diseases are described involving meat birds. Sources of salmonela in broiler chicks infected stem, feed and farm environment. Currently, S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium are the two most prevalent serovars. In this context, the sum is increased resistance to antimicrobial drugs is including the latest generation of its indiscriminate use in veterinary medicine. This fact represents risk to human and animal health. New strategies have been adopted by the Brazilian poultry industry to control salmonela in broilers, but the contamination by this pathogen is still present in slaughterhouses putting public health at risk

The mechanical forming processes are the main means of transformation. Among all processes, the most used is rolling and broken down into flat and non-flat products. In the flat products are classified plates, and products no plans bars and profiles. Thus laminating products, mostly, are the raw materials for other processes of transformation, as stamping, forging, machining, bending and more. This work has focused on non-flat products, classified as bars and rods, watching a key point in the proceedings that is the product quality. Here is demonstrated through metallographic analysis of steel bars, hot-rolled, the characteristics of surface cracks in these bars

Population growth, together with the gradual social ascent in Brazil, reflects at the growing need for better use of urban spaces. In this context, the amount of new buildings to meet the demand in property market, the needs for creating new roads and highways, among others, make the use of geotechnical works and, more specifically, retaining walls, more and more common. One of the simplest solutions for underground works is the use of retaining structures using tie back walls for soil support, therefore, the present work deals with this kind of structures. This paper proposes the use of FTOOL software testing in predicting deformations in tie back walls, by comparing simulations of the presented model to a real and measured deformation case in Guabirotuba Formation (PR). The results showed the importance of defining the parameters such as stiffness and curtain geometry, as well as the definition of representative loads acting on it. Also, it was pointed out that the passive response of the steel rods depends on the horizontal displacement of the wall. The study concluded that the program generates very representative results when compared to field data and seems to be a promising tool for tie back structures displacement predictions
