The aim of this study was to evaluate the osteogenic behavior of two chemically similar bioactive glass products (Biogran (R) and Perioglas (R)) implanted in critical bone defects in rat calvaria. Thirty-six transfixed bone defects of 8 mm diameter were made surgically in adult male Wistar rats. The animals were distributed equally into three groups: Biogran (GI), Perioglas (GII) and without implant material (control; GIII). The morphology and composition of both bioactive glasses were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometry. Tissue specimens were analyzed at the biological time points of 15, 30 and 60 days by optical microscopy and morphometry, demonstrating biocompatibility for the tested materials with moderate chronic inflammation involving their particles. Bone neoformation resulted only as a reparative reaction to an intentionally produced defect and was limited to the defect's edges. No statistically significant differences among the groups were observed. At the scar interstice, abundant deposits of collagenous fibers enveloping the particles were noted. The present results indicated that the bioactive glasses, under the experimental conditions analyzed, did not show osteogenic behavior. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel.

Chitosan, a biopolymer obtained from chitin, and its derivates, such as chitosan hydrochloride, has been reported as wound healing accelerators and as possible bone substitutes for tissue engineering, and therefore these Substances could be relevant in dentistry and periodontology. The purpose of this investigation was to make a histological evaluation of chitosan and chitosan hydrochloride biomaterials (gels) used in the correction of critical size bone defects made in rat's calvaria. Bone defects of 8 mm in diameter were surgically created in the calviria of 50 Holtzman (Rattus norvegicus) rats and filled with blood clot (control), low molecular weight chitosan, high molecular weight chitosan, low molecular weight chitosan hydrochloride, and high molecular weight chitosan hydrochloride, numbering 10 animals, divided into two experimental periods (15 and 60 days), for each biomaterial. The histological evaluation was made based on the morphology of the new-formed tissues in defect's region, and the results indicated that there was no statistical difference between the groups when the new bone formation in the entire defect's area were compared (p > 0.05) and, except in the control groups, assorted degrees of inflammation Could be Seen. In Conclusion, chitosan and chitosan hydrochloride biomaterials used in this study were not able to promote new bone formation in critical size defects made in rat's calvaria. Purpose: This study was proposed to analyze histologically the process of repairing bone defects created surgically in the cranial vaults of rabbits. Materials and Methods: Thirty adult male rabbits (Oryctolagus cunilicus) received, under general anesthesia, bilateral parietal osteotomies by means of a 6mm-diameter trephine. The bony defects were divided into 4 groups. In group 1 the defect did not receive any treatment; in group 2 the defect was filled with lyophilized bovine bone (Biograft); in group 3 it was filled with bovine bone and covered with a bone matrix membrane (Bioplate); in group 4 it was covered with a bone matrix membrane. Animals were sacrificed in 3 equal groups at 15, 30, and 60 days. The specimens were subjected to routine laboratory procedures to evaluate the degree of bone repair. Results: After 60 days, new bone formation in group 2 was not satisfactory when compared to that of group 3. Large amounts of new bone formation in maturation were seen in group 3. In the defects covered with a membrane the results were similar to those of group 1 (ie, the cavity was filled with fibrous connective tissue). The implanted bone and membranes were totally resorbed. Discussion and Conclusions: the use of a membrane served as a barrier against the migration of cells from the adjacent tissue and the bone graft/membrane preserved the cavity space, resulting in an enhanced osteogenic effect.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the possibility to obtain guided bone regeneration with two types of physical barriers (calcium sulfate and PTFE nonporous barrier) in surgical defects created in rat parietal bones. In the right parietal bone the calcium sulfate barrier filled out the whole defect and in the left parietal bone the barrier of PTFE was positioned in the floor and externally to the surgical defect. After 7, 14, 30 and 45 days four animals were sacrificed in each period and the bone containing the defects were submitted to the microscopic analysis. The results of the study revealed that the PTFE barrier was more effective for bone regeneration in shallow transcortical defects compared to the calcium sulfate. However, additional experiments are necessary to determine if calcium sulfate would be successful in other bone defects types or the use of the material under another consistence could complement the results obtained in this work.

The introduction of defects is discussed under the Lagrangian formalism and Backlund transformations for the N = 1 super sinh-Gordon model. Modified conserved momentum and energy are constructed for this case. Some explicit examples of different Backlund soliton solutions are discussed. The Lax formulation within the space split by the defect leads to the integrability of the model and henceforth to the existence of an infinite number of constants of motion.

Explicit examples of bosonic and fermionic theories are considered. In particular, the boundary functions for the super sinh-Gordon model is constructed and shown to generate the Backlund transformations for its soliton solutions.

The Lagrangian formalism for the N = 2 supersymmetric sinh-Gordon model with a jump defect is considered. The modified conserved momentum and energy are constructed in terms of border functions. The supersymmetric Backlund transformation is given and an one-soliton solution is obtained.The Lax formulation based on the affine super Lie algebra sl(2, 2) within the space split by the defect leads to the integrability of the model and henceforth to the existence of an infinite number of constants of motion.

In this paper we discuss the Lax formulation of the Grassmannian and Bosonic Thirring models in the presence of jump defects. For the Grassmannian case, the defect is described by Backlund transformation which is responsible for preserving the integrability of the model. We then propose an extension of the Backlund transformation for the Bosonic Thirring model which is verified by some Backlund transitions like vacuum-one soliton, one soliton-one soliton, one soliton-two solitons and two solitons-two solitons. The Lax formulation within the space split by the defect leads to the integrability of Bosonic Thirring model with jump defects.

Explicit examples of bosonic and fermionic theories are considered. In particular, the boundary functions for the N = 1 and N = 2 super sinh-Gordon models are constructed and shown to generate the Backlund transformations for its soliton solutions. As a new and interesting example, a solution with an incoming boson and an outgoing fermion for the N = 1 case is presented. The resulting integrable models are shown to be invariant under supersymmetric transformation.

Some dynamical properties of a classical particle confined inside a closed region with an oval-shaped boundary are studied. We have considered both the static and time-dependent boundaries. For the static case, the condition that destroys the invariant spanning curves in the phase space was obtained. For the time-dependent perturbation, two situations were considered: (i) non-dissipative and (ii) dissipative. For the non-dissipative case, our results show that Fermi acceleration is observed. When dissipation, via inelastic collisions, is introduced Fermi acceleration is suppressed. The behaviour of the average velocity for both the dissipative as well as the non-dissipative dynamics is described using the scaling approach. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Some dynamical properties for a classical particle confined inside a closed region with an elliptical-oval-like shape are studied. The dynamics of the model is made by using a two-dimensional nonlinear mapping. The phase space of the system is of mixed kind and we have found the condition that breaks the invariant spanning curves in the phase space. We have discussed also some statistical properties of the phase space and obtained the behaviour of the positive Lyapunov exponent. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
