The Zeeman effect of chlorine nuclear quadrupole resonance in polycrystalline samples of 2,6-, 2,5 and 3,5-dichlorophenol has been investigated at room temperature in order to study the effect of hydrogen bonding on the electric field gradient asymmetry parameter n. While the two n.q.r. lines in 3,5-dichlorophenol gave an asymmetry parameter of 10%, those in 2,6- and 2,5-dichlorophenol gave different values of n for the two chlorines. The chlorine atom which is ortho to the OH group and involved in hydrogen bonding (i.e., corresponding to the low frequency line) gave an asymmetry parameter of 0.21 in 2,6-dichlorophenol and 0.17 in 2,5-dichlorophenol while the other chlorine (i.e., corresponding to the high frequency line) gave a lower value of 0.12 in 2,6-dichlorophenol and 0.11 in 2,5-dichlorophenol. These values of n are discussed in terms of hydrogen bonding and bond parameters.

The current study reports the synthesis and properties of a novel isoindoline nitroxide contg. a benzophenone chromophore fused into the carbon framework. When exposed to UV light, rather than undergoing traditional benzophenone photochem. pathways, the presence of the nitroxide enables an energy transfer process whereby the nitroxide enters an excited state which induces an efficient hydrogen atom transfer from unactivated alkanes.

With the aim of finding simple methods for the fabrication of He II refilling devices, He II flow has been studied through filters made from various fine powders (oxides and metals, grain sizes in the range 0.05–2 μm) by compacting them under pressure. The results obtained for the different states of He II flow, especially in the “breakthrough” and “easy flow” range, are explained by the fountain effect, He II hydrodynamics and the choking effect. According to the results, pressedpowder filters can be classified into three groups with different flow characteristics, of which the “good transfer filters” with a behaviour neatly described by simple theory are suitable for use in He II refilling devices.

All the second-order boundary-layer effects have been studied for the steady laminar compressible 3-dimensional stagnation-point flows with variable properties and mass transfer for both saddle and nodal point regions. The governing equations have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. Results for the heat transfer and skin friction have been obtained for several values of the mass-transfer rate, wall temperature, and also for several values of parameters characterizing the nature of stagnation point and variable gas properties. The second-order effects on the heat transfer and skin friction at the wall are found to be significant and at large injection rates, they dominate over the results of the first-order boundary layer, but the effect of large suction is just the opposite. In general, the second-order effects are more pronounced in the saddle-point region than in the nodal-point region. The overall heat-transfer rate for the 3-dimensional flows is found to be more than that of the 2-dimensional flows.

The solubilization of bilirubin IX-Alpha in aqueous solution by sodium cholate micelles has been examined by 270 MHz 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Incorporation of bilirubin into the micelles is accompanied by specific shifts of bilirubin vinyl and bridgehead protons and the C18 and C19 methyl groups of the steroid. The observed chemical shifts show a monotonic concentration dependence suggesting that changes in aggregation size are continuous. Nuclear Overhauser effects (NOE) have been shown to be a useful probe or micellization. A 4:1 cholate/bilirubin mixture has been investigated by difference NOE spectroscopy. The observation of intermolecular nuclear Overhauser effects between peripheral protons of bilirubin and cholate are diagnostic of spatially proximate groups. Inter-cholate nuclear Overhauser effects increase in magnitude upon bilirubin incorporation suggesting closer packing of steroid molecules on solubilization of the pigment. Intramolecular nuclear Overhauser effects observed for solubilized bilirubin are consistent with a compact intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded conformation resembling that determined for bilirubin in the solid state.

Heat transfer in a MHD flow between two infinite eccentric disks rotating with different speeds is considered when the plates are maintained at different temperatures. The results for the corresponding nonmagnetic case presented wrongly by Banerjee and Borkakati [7] are corrected. It is observed that the eccentric rotation reduces the heat transfer on the disks.

Despite ongoing controversies regarding possible directions for the nuclear plants program throughout Japan since the Fukushima disaster, little has been researched about people's belief structure about future society and what may affect their attitudes toward different policy options. Beyond policy debates, the present study focused on how people see a future society according to the assumptions of different policy options. A total of 125 students at Japanese universities were asked to compare a future society with society today in which one of alternative policies was adopted (i.e., shutdown or expansion of nuclear reactors) in terms of characteristics of individuals and society in general. While perceived dangerousness of nuclear power predicted attitudes and behavioural intentions to make personal sacrifices for nuclear power policies, beliefs about the social consequences of the policies, especially on economic development and dysfunction, appeared to play stronger roles in predicting those measures. The importance of sociological dimensions in understanding how people perceive the future of society regarding alternative nuclear power policies, and the subtle discrepancies between attitudes and behavioural intentions, are discussed.

THE rapid development of recombinant DNA technology has brought forth a revolution in biology'>", it aids us to have a closer look at the 'way genes are organized, eS11 ecially in the complex eucaryotic genornes'<", Although many animal and yeast genes have been studied in detail using recombinant DNA technology, plant genes have seldom been targets for such studie., Germination is an ideal process to study gene expression .because it effects a . shift in the metabolic status of seeds from a state of 'dormancy to an active one. AJ;l understanding of gene organization and regulation darin.g germination can be accomplblted by molecular cloning of DNA from seeds lik.e rice. To study the status of histone, rRNA tRNA and other genes in the rice genome, a general method was developed to clone eucarvotic DNA in a' plasmid vector pBR 322. This essentially ~ involves the following steps. The rice embryo and plasmid pBR 322 DNAs were cut witll restriction endonuclease Bam Hi to generate stick.Y ends, The plasmid DNA was puosphatased, the DNA~ ware a~·tnealed and joined 'by T4 phage DNA ligase. The recombinant DNA molecules thus produced were transjerred into E. coli and colonies containing them Were selected by their sensitivity to tetracycline and resistance to ampicillin, Two clones were identified . 2S haVing tRNA genes by hybridization of the DNA in the clones \vitl1 32P-la.belled rice tRNAs.
Fibre Transfer in Merino Ewes Mated with Damara, Merino or Dorper Rams in Central Western Queensland
Resumo:
Considerable concern has been expressed by the Australian wool industry regarding the contamination of the clip with coloured or kempy fibres from imported breeds of sheep. As part of the evaluation of imported sheep meat breeds in western Queensland, a study is examining fibre growth and transfer of fibres and the potential to cause physical contamination of Merino fleeces. The breeds of concern in this study are the Damara, a fat-tailed breed with a hairy, coloured fleece and the Dorper which has both pigmented fibres and a kempy fleece which is shed cyclically. Three groups of Merino 27 ewes were mated to Merino, Damara and Dorper rams respectively and fibre transfer to the Merino ewes during mating, from lambing to weaning and during grazing, assessed. Both a direct field method and a laboratory method (Hatcher 1995) are being used. Those measured by direct count were measured immediately after joining and 2, 4 and 8 weeks subsequently. and the other ewes were shorn and sampled and measured in the laboratory using the dark fibre detector. This paper presents preliminary findings of those ewes monitored by the direct field method. The tropical marine sponge Acanthella cavernosa (Dendy) converts potassium [14C] cyanide to axisonitrile-3 (1); this precursor is also used for the synthesis of axisothiocyanate-3 (2) suggesting that isocyanides are precursors to isothiocyanates in A. cavernosa. Likewise, potassium [14C] thiocyanate is used for the synthesis of axisothiocyanate-3; unexpectedly this precursor also labelled axisonitrile-3. These results demonstrate either an interconversion between cyanide and thiocyanate prior to secondary metabolite formation or that the secondary metabolites can themselves be interconverted. Specimens of the dorid nudibranch Phyllidiellu pustulosa, preadapted to a diet of A. cavernosa, fed on 14C-labelled sponges and were subsequently found to contain the radioactive terpenes (1) and (2). Specimens of P. pustulosa, which had not expressed a dietary preference for A. cavernosa in the field, did not generally feed in aquarium tests with 14C-labelled sponges and, therefore, provided non-radioactive extracts. Since control experiments demonstrated the inability of P. pustulosa to synthesise the metabolites de novo, we therefore conclude that P. pustulosa acquires secondary metabolites by dietary transfer from A. cavernosa.

The Uppsala school of Axel Hägerström can be said to have been the last genuinely Swedish philosophical movement. On the other hand, the Swedish analytic tradition is often said to have its roots in Hägerström s thought. This work examines the transformation from Uppsala philosophy to analytic philosophy from an actor-based historical perspective. The aim is to describe how a group of younger scholars (Ingemar Hedenius, Konrad Marc-Wogau, Anders Wedberg, Alf Ross, Herbert Tingsten, Gunnar Myrdal) colonised the legacy of Hägerström and Uppsala philosophy, and faced the challenges they met in trying to reconcile this legacy with the changing philosophical and political currents of the 1930s and 40s. Following Quentin Skinner, the texts are analysed as moves or speech acts in a particular historical context. The thesis consists of five previously published case studies and an introduction. The first study describes how the image of Hägerström as the father of the Swedish analytic tradition was created by a particular faction of younger Uppsala philosophers who (re-) presented the Hägerströmian philosophy as a parallel movement to logical empiricism. The second study examines the confrontations between Uppsala philosophy and logical empiricism in both the editorial board and in the pages of Sweden s leading philosophical journal Theoria. The third study focuses on how the younger generation redescribed Hägerströmian legal philosophical ideas (Scandinavian Legal Realism), while the fourth study discusses how they responded to the accusations of a connection between Hägerström s value nihilistic theory and totalitarianism. Finally, the fifth study examines how the Swedish social scientist and Social Democratic intellectual Gunnar Myrdal tried to reconcile value nihilism with a strong political programme for social reform. The contribution of this thesis to the field consists mainly in a re-evaluation of the role of Uppsala philosophy in the history of Swedish philosophy. From this perspective the Uppsala School was less a collection of certain definite philosophical ideas than an intellectual legacy that was the subject of fierce struggles. Its theories and ideas were redescribed in various ways by individual actors with different philosophical and political intentions.

The magnetofluid dynamic steady incompressible laminar boundary layer flow for a point sink with an applied magnetic field and mass transfer has been studied. The two-point boundary-value problem governed by self-similar equations has been solved numerically. It is observed that the magnetic field increases the skin friction, but reduces the heat transfer and mass flux diffusion. However, the skin friction, heat transfer and mass flux diffusion increase due to suction and the effect of injection is just opposite. Prandtl and Schmidt numbers affect the temperature and concentration, respectively.

Approximately 30% of plant nuclear genes appear to encode proteins targeted to the plastids or endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The signals that direct proteins into these compartments are diverse in sequence, but, on the basis of a limited number of tests in heterologous systems, they appear to be functionally conserved across species. To further test the generality of this conclusion, we tested the ability of two plastid transit peptides and an ER signal peptide to target green fluorescent protein (GFP) in 12 crops, including three monocots (barley, sugarcane, wheat) and nine dicots (Arabidopsis, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, lettuce, radish, tobacco, turnip). In all species, transient assays following microprojectile bombardment or vacuum infiltration using Agrobacterium showed that the plastid transit peptides from tomato DCL (defective chloroplast and leaves) and tobacco RbcS [ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco) small subunit] genes were effective in targeting GFP to the leaf plastids. GFP engineered as a fusion to the N-terminal ER signal peptide from Arabidopsis basic chitinase and a C-terminal HDEL signal for protein retention in the ER was accumulated in the ER of all species. The results in tobacco were confirmed in stably transformed cells. These signal sequences should be useful to direct proteins to the plastid stroma or ER lumen in diverse plant species of biotechnological interest for the accumulation of particular recombinant proteins or for the modification of particular metabolic streams.
