In this article, we investigate the spontaneous emission properties of radiating molecules embedded in a chiral nematic liquid crystal, under the assumption that the electronic transition frequency is close to the photonic edge mode of the structure, i.e., at resonance. We take into account the transition broadening and the decay of electromagnetic field modes supported by the so-called "mirrorless"cavity. We employ the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian to describe the electron interaction with the electromagnetic field, focusing on the mode with the diffracting polarization in the chiral nematic layer. As known in these structures, the density of photon states, calculated via the Wigner method, has distinct peaks on either side of the photonic band gap, which manifests itself as a considerable modification of the emission spectrum. We demonstrate that, near resonance, there are notable differences between the behavior of the density of states and the spontaneous emission profile of these structures. In addition, we examine in some detail the case of the logarithmic peak exhibited in the density of states in two-dimensional photonic structures and obtain analytic relations for the Lamb shift and the broadening of the atomic transition in the emission spectrum. The dynamical behavior of the atom-field system is described by a system of two first-order differential equations, solved using the Green's-function method and the Fourier transform. The emission spectra are then calculated and compared with experimental data. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Electro-optic switching in short-pitch polymer stabilized chiral nematic liquid crystals was studied and the relative contributions of flexoelectric and dielectric coupling were investigated: polymer stabilization was found to effectively suppress unwanted textural transitions of the chiral nematic liquid crystal and thereby enhance the electro-optical performance (high optical contrast for visible light, a near ideal optical hysteresis, fast electro-optic response). Test cells were studied that possessed interdigitated electrodes to electrically address the liquid crystal. Based on simulations, a well-fitted phenomenological description of the electro-optic response was derived considering both flexoelectro-optic and Kerr-effect based electro-optic response. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

The molar heat capacities of the two biphenyl liquid crystals, 3BmFF and 3BmFFXF3, with a purity of 99.7 mol% have been precisely measured by a fully automated precision adiabatic calorimeter in the temperature range between T = 80 and 350 K. Nematic phase-liquid phase transitions were found between T = 297 K and 300 K with a peak temperature of T-peak = (298.071 +/- 0.089) K for 3BmFF, and between T = 316 and 319 K with a peak temperature of T-peak = (315.543 +/- 0.043) K for 3BmFFXF3. The molar enthalpy (Delta(trs)H(m)) and entropy (Delta(trs)S(m)) corresponding to these phase transitions have been determined by means of the analysis of the heat capacity curves, which are (15.261 +/- 0.023) U mol(-1) and (51.202 +/- 0.076) J K-1 mol(-1) for 3BmFF, (31.624 +/- 0.066) kJ mol(-1) and (100.249 +/- 0.212) J K-1 mol(-1) for 3BmFFXF3, respectively. The real melting points (TI) and the ideal melting points (TO) with no impurities of the two compounds have been obtained from the fractional melting method to be (298.056 +/- 0.018) K and (298.165 +/- 0.038) K for 3BmFF, (315.585 +/- 0.043) K and (315.661 +/- 0.044) K for 3BmFFXF3, respectively. In addition, the transitions of these two biphenyl liquid crystals from nematic phase to liquid phase have further been investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) technique; the repeatability and reliability for these phase transitions were verified. 5,10,15,20-Tetra-[(p-alkoxy-m-ethyloxy)phenyl]porphyrin and [5-(p-alkoxy)phenyl-10,15,20-tri-phenyl]porphyrin and their holmium(III) complexes are reported. They display a hexagonal columnar discotic columnar Col(h)) liquid crystal phase and were studied by cyclic voltammetry, surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS), electric-field-induced surface photovoltage spectroscopy (EFISPS) and luminescence spectroscopy. Within the accessible potential window, all these compounds exhibit two one-electron reversible redox reactions. Quantum yields of Q band are in the region 0.0045-0.21 at room temperature. The SPS and EFISPS reveal that all the compounds are p-type semiconductors and exhibit photovoltaic response due to pi-pi* electron transitions.

The phase transition behavior of a thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol (BP), and chlorohydroquinone (CH) with 1,4-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene (BF) has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The copolymer exhibits multiple first order phase transitions, which are associated with crystal-to-smectic liquid crystal transition and smectic liquid crystal-to-isotropic transition. When the cooling rate is low (<10

Series of thermotropic liquid crystalline poly (aryl ether ketone) s were synthesized by mucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and substituted hydroquinone with different difluoromonomers, The relationship between structure and properties of the novel copolymers was investigated. For the copolymers with liquid crystalline properties, their melting transition temperatures show no great change with increase the content of the crystal-disrupting unit. The reason is that the crystal phase is directly transformed from the ordered liquid crystal phase. Side-groups have important effect on mesophase stability, The temperature range of mesophase stability for the chloro-polymers is smaller than those of other series of copolymers (P-phenyl, t-butyl, methoxy, 3-trifluoromethylbenzene). This behavior indicates that the effect of geometric repulsive factor on the thermodynamic stability of the mesophase is much larger than that of the polarizability attractive factor. Different ordered liquid crystal phases are observed in the polymers with different molecular weights. At low molecular weight, highly ordered smectic liquid crystal phases form. With increasing the molecular weight, the ordered degree of the liquid crystals decreases, and only the nematic liquid crystal phase is observed in the polymer with higher molecular weight.

A series of novel thermotropic side-chain liquid crystalline polymer based on polymethacrylate backbone containing electron-accepting 4-(4'-nitrophenylazo)phenoxy as nonlinear optical active group and electron-donating 4(4'-methoxyphenyl) phenoxy group as mesogen attached covalently to the backbone through the flexible spacer was prepared and characterized, respectively. The results from differential scanning calorimetry showed that these series of copolymers were enantiotropic liquid crystal with single mesophase. The melting points and the relative enthalpy change of the copolymers depressed with increasing the molar percent of 4'-nitroazobenzene monomer units over 0 similar to 50mol%, but the enthalpies change of the transition from mesophase to isotropic state increased for the copolymers containing 0 similar to 50mol% 4'-nitroambenzene units. The texture observed under polarized optical microscope identified that the copolymers containing 24molar% or more than 24mol% 4-nitroambenzene monomer units could form smectic mesophase with the focal-conic texture. The results detected by WAXD were in good agreement with the results observed by POM.

A liquid crystalline carbosilane dendrimer with Sc* phase has been synthesized in successive steps, resulting in the formation of defined, unimolecular compound. Twelve biphenyl mesogenic units were attached on its periphery and it has a three dimentional, treelike starburst structure. Its phase behavior was K95S(c)*103Ch118I. Compared.with its biphenyl mesogenic unit , 4-(2'-methylbutyl)-4'-(omega-hydroxyhexyl) azobenzene , which was melted at 128 degrees C and is not a liquid crystal, it is a good liquid crystal material with Sc* phase.

Mixed liquid crystal formation has been studied in a new binary system comprising paranitroazobenzene derivatives, in which one component was a mesogen and the other was a non-mesogen. The mixtures were found to exhibit a monotropic nematic phase which was converted to an enantiotropic phase in specific ranges of temperature and concentration. The latent liquid crystal-isotropic transition temperature (LTP) of the non-mesogen was obtained by using the extrapolation method of the transition temperature-composition curve and the equal-G analysis method. The LTPs of the non-mesogen obtained by the above two methods showed good agreement with each other. The low-temperature transition of the mixtures detected by DSC was attributed to a change of the crystallite size.

The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone with 4,4'-biphenyldiol and chlorohydroquinone. As expected, the copolymers have lower melting transitions than the biphenyldiol-based homopoly(aryl ether ketone) because of the copolymerization effect of the crystal-disrupting monomer chlorohydroquinone. Copolymers containing 50 and 70% biphenyldiol show two first-order transitions which are associated with the crystal-to-liquid crystal transition and the liquid crystal-to-isotropic transition.

A series of liquid crystalline copolymers, poly{2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate}-co-{6-[4-(S-2-methyl-1-butyloxycarbonylphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate} with an azobenzene moiety as photoreactive mesogenic unit, was prepared and investigated by using DSC, polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that these polymers exhibit smectic phases. Z-type Langmuir-Blodgett films of these copolymers were successfully deposited onto calcium fluoride and quartz. Reversible homeotropic and planar liquid crystal alignments were induced by using the photochromism of the LB films of one of the copolymers containing 20.6 mol % of the azo unit.

Five new chiral liquid crystal systems induced by intermolecular hydrogen bonding between 4-[(S)-2-chloro-3-methyl]butyroyloxy-4'-stilbazole (MBSB, proton acceptor) and 4-alkoxybenzoic acids (nBA, proton donors) were prepared. Their liquid crystalline properties were investigated by DSC and polarized optical microscopy. Chiral nematic and chiral smectic phases were observed, and the thermal stability of one complex was studied through temperature dependent infrared spectroscopy.

Two new hydrogen bond induced liquid crystals with 4-butoxy benzoic acid as the proton donor and two chiral substituted stilbazole as the proton acceptor have been synthesized. Their liquid crystal transitions were studied by DSC and optical polarized microscope, the IR spectra of the complexes show the existence of the intermolecular hydrogen bond. The results of DSC and optical polarized microscope show that one of them (4BA-VSZ) has a chiral smectic C phase.

Experimental results at X-band are used to compare the electromagnetic scattering from a printed reflectarray cell, which is constructed on 500 mu m thick layers of three different nematic state liquid crystals. It is shown that a small voltage can be used to vary the permittivity of the tunable substrate and thereby control the phase of the reflected signals. Numerical results using Ansoft HFSS are compared with the measured phase, resonant frequencies and signal attenuation for two orientations of the liquid crystal molecules. Data fitting is employed to quantify the loss tangent and the permittivity values of the three anisotropic specimens. The performance trade-offs that are imposed by the use of commercially available materials are discussed, and the computer model is used to specify the electrical properties of a liquid crystal mixture, which can provide a signal loss of <1 dB and a dynamic phase range of 300 degrees from the patch elements at 10 GHz.
