The reform of cities spaces and housing has been a key issue with campaigners on the left for more than a century. These campaigns have found allies in the work of socially committed photographers from Jacob Riis at the turn of the twentieth century to Margaret Morton and Camilo Jose Vergara today. Globally the current phase of neo-liberalism has brought its own issues to the city as ‘regeneration’ strategies dispossess the urban poor in areas that are potentially lucrative to real estate development. In this process known as ‘accumulation by dispossession’ large profits are accumulated in the process of dispossessing people of their land, rights and homes. Central to the theoretical component of this paper, is an interrogation of contemporary ideas on the production and photographic representation of urban space. The research hence questions photography’s ability to make ‘legible’ the key drivers of today’s emergent terrains and to visualize their connections to the networks of power and capital that articulate the current political economy (Sassen 2011:36). One strand here will be the ‘fleshing out’ of the cultural practices behind photographers mediating urban development (Jones 2013: 1.2). Alongside current corporate depictions historical precedents will be discussed. Photographers as far back as Charles Marville in Paris of the 1850’s have documented urban reconstruction (Kennel 2013). Often employed by those undertaking the demolition, these photographic images frequently suppress certain narratives of the unbuilding process. Acting as a propaganda tool they eliminate the impact on the lives of inhabitants or the economic realities driving the valorization of reconstruction schemes (James 2004). Reformist documentary images have also played their part in justifying large-scale urban reconstruction that involved the eventual displacement of existing communities (Rose 1997: Blaikie 2006). Focusing on the gentrification of social housing in Pendleton, Salford (Greater Manchester) the presentation will explore the artists’ own work through a critical discussion, photographic images and excerpts from site writing they’ve undertaken in the area since 2004. It asks can an alternative photographic and visual strategy provide a meaningful political counter narrative to combat persuasive corporate discourses on ‘urban revitalization’? The paper will explore strategies and techniques of witnessing and ask whether these types of record can counter neo-liberal visualizations that mediate the material transformation of city areas. Can such representations begin a critical conversation about the nature of urban change and who benefits from these transformations (Wyly 2010)? Can we develop this critical photography into a type of practice that moves beyond generalisations and talks about social relations though an ‘explicit analysis of society’ (Rosler 2004:195).

Little is known about the molecular mechanisms whereby the human blood fluke Schistosoma japonicum is able to survive in the host venous blood system. Protease inhibitors are likely released by the parasite enabling it to avoid attack by host proteolytic enzymes and coagulation factors. Interrogation of the S. japonicum genomic sequence identified a gene, SjKI-1, homologous to that encoding a single domain Kunitz protein (Sjp_0020270) which we expressed in recombinant form in Escherichia coli and purified. SjKI-1 is highly transcribed in adult worms and eggs but its expression was very low in cercariae and schistosomula. In situ immunolocalization with anti-SjKI-1 rabbit antibodies showed the protein was present in eggs trapped in the infected mouse intestinal wall. In functional assays, SjKI-1 inhibited trypsin in the picomolar range and chymotrypsin, neutrophil elastase, FXa and plasma kallikrein in the nanomolar range. Furthermore, SjKI-1, at a concentration of 7·5 µ m, prolonged 2-fold activated partial thromboplastin time of human blood coagulation. We also demonstrate that SjKI-1 has the ability to bind Ca(++). We present, therefore, characterization of the first Kunitz protein from S. japonicum which we show has an anti-coagulant properties. In addition, its inhibition of neutrophil elastase indicates SjKI-1 have an anti-inflammatory role. Having anti-thrombotic properties, SjKI-1 may point the way towards novel treatment for hemostatic disorders.

This chapter considers the radical reimaginings of traditional Irish step dance in the recent works of Jean Butler and Colin Dunne, in which the Irish step-dancing body is separated from its historical roots in nationalism, from the exhibitionism required by the competitive form, and from the spectacularization of the commercialized theatrical format. In these works the traditional form undergoes a critical interrogation in which the dancers attempt to depart from the determinacy of the traditional technique, while acknowledging its formation of their corporealities; the Irish step-dance technique becomes a springboard for creative experimentation. To consider the importance of the creative potential revealed by these works, this chapter contextualizes them within the dance background from which they emerged, outlining the history of competitive step dancing in Ireland, the “modernization” of traditional Irish dance with the emergence of Riverdance (1994), and the experiments of Ireland’s national folk theater, Siamsa Tíre.

The McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica are an extreme polar desert. Mineral soils support subsurface microbial communities and translucent rocks support development of hypolithic communities on ventral surfaces in soil contact. Despite significant research attention, relatively little is known about taxonomic and functional diversity or their inter-relationships. Here we report a combined diversity and functional interrogation for soil and hypoliths of the Miers Valley in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. The study employed 16S rRNA fingerprinting and high throughput sequencing combined with the GeoChip functional microarray. The soil community was revealed as a highly diverse reservoir of bacterial diversity dominated by actinobacteria. Hypolithic communities were less diverse and dominated by cyanobacteria. Major differences in putative functionality were that soil communities displayed greater diversity in stress tolerance and recalcitrant substrate utilization pathways, whilst hypolithic communities supported greater diversity of nutrient limitation adaptation pathways. A relatively high level of functional redundancy in both soil and hypoliths may indicate adaptation of these communities to fluctuating environmental conditions.

Ce mémoire a pour objectif d’examiner la part de poésie contenue dans les romans Kamouraska (1970) d’Anne Hébert et L’Amant (1984) de Marguerite Duras. Alors même que ces oeuvres sont souvent qualifiées de poétiques par la critique, la question générique se trouve formulée par les auteures elles-mêmes, qui remettent en cause le partage entre récit et poésie dans leur production. En mobilisant dans un premier temps le modèle théorique du récit poétique de Jean-Yves Tadié, puis en se livrant dans un deuxième temps à un examen de certaines spécificités stylistiques des oeuvres retenues, le présent mémoire s’efforce de mener à la fois une interrogation sur la possibilité d’une hybridation entre narration et poésie et une recherche des traces de pareil phénomène dans les romans hébertien et durassien. Il procède, par le fait même, à une réflexion sur le modèle de Tadié, l’analyse réalisée permettant d’en questionner les modalités.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an emerging area of research associated to improvement of maintainability and the safety of aerospace, civil and mechanical infrastructures by means of monitoring and damage detection. Guided wave structural testing method is an approach for health monitoring of plate-like structures using smart material piezoelectric transducers. Among many kinds of transducers, the ones that have beam steering feature can perform more accurate surface interrogation. A frequency steerable acoustic transducer (FSATs) is capable of beam steering by varying the input frequency and consequently can detect and localize damage in structures. Guided wave inspection is typically performed through phased arrays which feature a large number of piezoelectric transducers, complexity and limitations. To overcome the weight penalty, the complex circuity and maintenance concern associated with wiring a large number of transducers, new FSATs are proposed that present inherent directional capabilities when generating and sensing elastic waves. The first generation of Spiral FSAT has two main limitations. First, waves are excited or sensed in one direction and in the opposite one (180 ̊ ambiguity) and second, just a relatively rude approximation of the desired directivity has been attained. Second generation of Spiral FSAT is proposed to overcome the first generation limitations. The importance of simulation tools becomes higher when a new idea is proposed and starts to be developed. The shaped transducer concept, especially the second generation of spiral FSAT is a novel idea in guided waves based of Structural Health Monitoring systems, hence finding a simulation tool is a necessity to develop various design aspects of this innovative transducer. In this work, the numerical simulation of the 1st and 2nd generations of Spiral FSAT has been conducted to prove the directional capability of excited guided waves through a plate-like structure.

Beginning with Montaigne’s essayistic dictum Que sais je? — ‘What do I know?’ — this PhD thesis examines the literary history, formal qualities, and theoretical underpinnings of the personal essay to both investigate and to practice its relevance as an approach to writing about art. The thesis proposes the essay as intrinsically linked to research, critical writing, and art making; it is a literary method that embodies the real experience of attempting to answer a question. The essay is a processual and reflexive mode of enquiry: a form that conveys not just the essayist’s thought, but the sense and texture of its movement as it attempts to understand its object. It is often invoked, across disciplines, in reference to the possibility of a more liberal sense of creative practice — one that conceptually and stylistically privileges collage, fragmentation, hybridity, chance, open-endedness, and the meander. Within this question of the essay as form, the thesis contains two distinct and parallel strands of analysis — subject matter and essay writing as research. At the core of the study lie two close-readings: Ana Mendieta’s Labyrinth of Venus (1982) and Le Couvent de la Tourette (1959) by Le Corbusier and Iannis Xenakis. In each case, the writing draws, in its tone and texture, on a range of literary influences, weaving together different voices, discussions, and approaches to enquiry. The practice of essay writing is presented alongside, part and party to, research: a method of interrogation that embraces risk and uncertainty, and simultaneously enacts its own findings as a critical-creative mode of study-via-form, and form-via-study. The thesis is presented as a book-length essay, in which the art in question is equal and intimately connected to the writing used to address it. Method and form are designed to respond to the oft-cited challenge of the essay as fundamentally unmethodical, ranging, and diverse. Research, critical study, writerly description, and storytelling are combined to elucidate and expose each other based not on surface continuity, but on a deep interconnection among ideas that, through language, cohere and become related — imbued with an affinity for one another. The consummate product is the argument, as it works across genres, disciplines, descriptive and critical models, to challenge the narrative structure and language used within contemporary writing about art.

On Anthropomorphism concerns itself with performances and artworks that explore the complex of interesting and mutually contradictory ideas located under the umbrella term, ‘anthropomorphism’. On the one hand, it is used to refer to something that resembles a human, and on the other hand it refers to our natural tendency to read human characteristics in the non-human object or animal. Moreover, an interrogation of the concept of anthropomorphism, especially as it is found in contemporary performance, suggests that there is not a singular line dividing the human from the non-human but a vast terrain that houses the comical, the uncanny and the abject. The aim of this issue is to elucidate anthropomorphism in its multitude of aspects, thereby shedding light on discourses around object theatre and ecological performance that attempt to understand the more-than-human world in a way that goes beyond ‘mere’ anthropomorphism.

The chapter discusses the notion of the ‘operatic’ with particular reference to movement. Through observation of singers in rehearsal and through interviews with singers over two years, the research posits that ‘operatic’ movement may be identified and explored as a discrete quality of movement in performance and recognised as an, albeit underappreciated, aspect of the artistry of the opera singer. The paper explores the effects of the demands of singing on the dramatic expressivity of the body and the strategies employed by singers to navigate, the sometimes conflicting demands of the composer and the director. ‘Operatic’ movement is regarded as that which is not generated through character or narrative (positioned as a normative approach to acting) but through the negotiation of the physical constrictions and artificiality of breath associated with operatic singing, combined with sensitivity towards opera’s non-normative performance conventions. This position is aided by an interrogation of opera through the lens of gender theory. The chapter makes two propositions, that the ‘operatic’, which does not form part of the formal pedagogy of singers, is an emergent property, especially evident at the intersection of the various creative disciplines that contribute to opera, such as when the orchestra is introduced to the rehearsal process, and that ‘operaticness’ is acquired and passed on through a process of kinaesthetic empathy.

Depuis le début des années '30, nous remarquons un intérêt marqué de la part de certains chercheurs pour explorer la fiabilité et la validité de l'analyse de l'écriture; toutefois, nous constatons que la méthode de la graphologie demeure jusqu'à présent la plus étudiée et la plus répandue. Comme principal champs d'intérêt, ces études n'ont jusqu'alors tenté que de démontrer si l'analyse de l'écriture se voyait un instrument de mesure valide 1). pour la sélection du personnel, 2). comme prédicteur de succès pour un poste donné, ou encore, 3). comme substitut aux tests de personnalité. Cependant, à notre connaissance, aucune recherche scientifique n'a présenté d'étude comparative entre l'analyse de l'écriture (graphoanalyse) et les tests dits d'aptitudes, couramment utilisés par les conseillers et conseillères d'orientation. Le présent essai soulève donc essentiellement cette interrogation: la graphoanalyse peut-elle servir d'instrument de mesure valide comme test d'aptitudes pour les conseillers et conseillères d'orientation? De façon plus précise, nous comparerons la graphoanalyse à la Batterie Générale des Tests d'Aptitudes (B.G.T.A.); test bien connu des conseillers et conseillères d'orientation.

On remet souvent en question la pertinence des services de maintien à domicile et plus particulièrement l'impact de leur action sur la qualité de vie des personnes âgées (Commission Rochon, 1987). Une telle attitude s'explique sans doute par le fait que les études d'évaluation objective ont jusqu'ici fait défaut. C'est pourquoi, lorsque vient le temps de préciser la nature des programmes qui répondent le mieux à l'objectif de maintien à domicile, compte tenu des ressources financières, humaines et matérielles dont nous disposons, il nous manque des faits et des critères de référence dûment éprouvés. Les essais de réponse que nous trouvons ici et là sur la création et la mise en place de nouveaux services ne s'appuient le plus souvent que sur une évaluation subjective des intervenants eux-mêmes. La question de l'efficacité des services en soulève une autre toute aussi importante. Quels sont les facteurs ou les raisons qui amènent les personnes âgées à demander l'hébergement en famille d'accueil ou en établissement? Les études les plus récentes révèlent pourtant que la majorité des personnes âgées, soit 657. (Béland, 19S2), désirent demeurer à domicile. Cependant, les archives des comités d'admission régionaux font voir une progression constante des demandes d'hébergement. Les raisons fondamentales de ces augmentations demeurent mystérieuses; est-ce dû principalement à la croissance rapide de la population âgée à risque (35 ans et plus), à l'augmentation des services, à l'isolement, à la faiblesse des revenus ou à la précarité de l'état de santé, à la difficulté d'adaptation à cause de certains problèmes qui peuvent survenir avec l'âge? La demande d'hébergement s'appuie parfois sur l'un ou l'autre de ces motifs, mais, le plus souvent, c'est l'ensemble de ces facteurs qui interviennent dans la motivation de l'individu qui désire quitter son domicile pour un milieu plus "protecteur". Il n'en demeure pas moins que l'importance de la demande d'hébergement pose de manière radicale la question de la pertinence de nos services, tant dans leur variété que dans la façon dont ils sont dispensés. La présente recherche tentera de fournir des éléments de réponse à cette interrogation en évaluant l'impact d'un programme de Centre de jour sur la clientèle âgée. Elle contribuera aussi à jeter une lumière nouvelle sur toute la problématique du maintien à domicile.

L'éducation morale peut-elle répondre au défi et au besoin d'une éthique personnelle et sociale? Comment l'école peut-elle mettre en branle un processus de socialisation chez les jeunes? Permet-elle d'éclairer, d'élargir et d'approfondir le contenu social des enjeux éthiques chez l'enfant quand celui-ci est aux prises constamment avec le devoir du rendement et des notes? La pédagogie de l'enseignement moral telle que vécue dans nos écoles ouvre-telle les portes à la socialisation ou au narcissisme et à l'individualisme? Y a-t-il, en fait, entre l'organisation scolaire et l'organisation sociale, une continuité grâce à laquelle la formation morale à l'école permet au jeune de s'engager dans le processus social tout en développant des connaissances et des aptitudes nécessaires pour comprendre les enjeux éthiques collectifs et proposer des pistes de solutions? Pour favoriser cette continuité, l'organisation scolaire ne devrait-elle pas être à l'image de l'organisation sociale? Ultimement, quel lien existe-t-il entre l'école québécoise et notre société? Ce rapide survol de la problématique de l'éducation morale nous permet de distinguer actuellement trois niveaux d'interrogation: la conception de l'être humain sous-jacente aux programmes, la finalité de l'enseignement dans les écoles du Québec, ainsi que son enjeu social. Soulever ainsi cette problématique nous aide à mieux réfléchir sur la situation et à proposer des pistes de solutions pour faire de l'éducation morale une théorie et une pratique toujours plus conformes aux expériences individuelles et sociales de chez nous. C'est à partir de ce questionnement global que le philosophe et pédagogue américain John Dewey (1859-1952) nous semble très pertinent. Face à la problématique de l'éducation morale au Québec, la référence spécifique à John Dewey nous semble crédible pour plusieurs raisons. […]

Quantum mechanics predicts that our physical reality is influenced by events that can potentially happen but factually do not occur. Interaction-free measurements (IFMs) exploit this counterintuitive influence to detect the presence of an object without requiring any interaction with it. Here we propose and realize an IFM concept based on an unstable many-particle system. In our experiments, we employ an ultracold gas in an unstable spin configuration, which can undergo a rapid decay. The object-realized by a laser beam-prevents this decay because of the indirect quantum Zeno effect and thus, its presence can be detected without interacting with a single atom. Contrary to existing proposals, our IFM does not require single-particle sources and is only weakly affected by losses and decoherence. We demonstrate confidence levels of 90%, well beyond previous optical experiments.

O presente relatório foi realizado no âmbito da Unidade Curricular de Prática de Ensino Supervisionada (PES), integrada no curso de Mestrado em Educação Pré-escolar (EPE) e Ensino do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico (1.º CEB) e desenvolvida em contexto de Educação Pré-escolar, numa Instituição Particular de Solidariedade Social, com crianças de 3 anos de idade e em contexto do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, numa escola da rede pública com um grupo/turma de crianças de 5 e 6 anos de idade. A prática foi desenvolvida nos dois contextos, e os dados foram retirados no decorrer das intervenções realizadas através da observação direta e participante, sendo que para a recolha de dados recorremos a notas de campo, registos fotográficos e de áudio e, ainda, às produções das crianças, com a intencionalidade de nos servirem como documentos de análise. Ao longo do processo fomos também realizando registos numa grelha de observação, adaptada de Viana e Ribeiro (2014), para podermos compreender a evolução das crianças no desenvolvimento das suas competências (meta)linguísticas. Partimos da questão-problema: Que estratégias de aprendizagem se podem desenvolver em contexto de Educação Pré-escolar e de 1.º Ciclo Ensino Básico, no sentido de desenvolver competências (meta)linguísticas? Considerando esta interrogação estabelecemos como objetivo: (i) Promover o desenvolvimento linguístico e metalinguístico das crianças num contexto geral de comunicação (oralidade, escrita e leitura). O estudo ajusta-se a uma abordagem qualitativa. Para que fosse possível recolhermos a informação para a presente investigação foi necessário selecionarmos um conjunto de técnicas e de instrumentos de recolha de dados. Durante as atividades que desenvolvemos proporcionamos um ambiente positivo, facilitador da exploração de situações diversificadas de escrita e leitura e propiciamos, também, oportunidades para que cada criança fosse ouvida, respeitada e integrada. Em termos de resultados pensamos poder concluir que nos dois contextos atendemos aos interesses e motivações das crianças, de modo a promover estratégias de aprendizagens de forma a desenvolver competências (meta)linguísticas, como se comprova pela análise dos dados obtidos através das grelhas de observação, bem como nas experiências de ensino e aprendizagem que integramos neste documento e que também dão conta do processo vivenciado ao longo da Prática de Ensino Supervisionada.
