Atlases and statistical models play important roles in the personalization and simulation of cardiac physiology. For the study of the heart, however, the construction of comprehensive atlases and spatio-temporal models is faced with a number of challenges, in particular the need to handle large and highly variable image datasets, the multi-region nature of the heart, and the presence of complex as well as small cardiovascular structures. In this paper, we present a detailed atlas and spatio-temporal statistical model of the human heart based on a large population of 3D+time multi-slice computed tomography sequences, and the framework for its construction. It uses spatial normalization based on nonrigid image registration to synthesize a population mean image and establish the spatial relationships between the mean and the subjects in the population. Temporal image registration is then applied to resolve each subject-specific cardiac motion and the resulting transformations are used to warp a surface mesh representation of the atlas to fit the images of the remaining cardiac phases in each subject. Subsequently, we demonstrate the construction of a spatio-temporal statistical model of shape such that the inter-subject and dynamic sources of variation are suitably separated. The framework is applied to a 3D+time data set of 138 subjects. The data is drawn from a variety of pathologies, which benefits its generalization to new subjects and physiological studies. The obtained level of detail and the extendability of the atlas present an advantage over most cardiac models published previously. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

We present a system for augmenting depth camera output using multispectral photometric stereo. The technique is demonstrated using a Kinect sensor and is able to produce geometry independently for each frame. Improved reconstruction is demonstrated using the Kinect's inbuilt RGB camera and further improvements are achieved by introducing an additional high resolution camera. As well as qualitative improvements in reconstruction a quantitative reduction in temporal noise is shown. As part of the system an approach is presented for relaxing the assumption of multispectral photometric stereo that scenes are of constant chromaticity to the assumption that scenes contain multiple piecewise constant chromaticities.

In the face of increasing demand and limited emission reduction opportunities, the steel industry will have to look beyond its process emissions to bear its share of emission reduction targets. One option is to improve material efficiency - reducing the amount of metal required to meet services. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to explore why opportunities to improve material efficiency through upstream measures such as yield improvement and lightweighting might remain underexploited by industry. Established input-output techniques are applied to the GTAP 7 multi-regional input-output model to quantify the incentives for companies in key steel-using sectors (such as property developers and automotive companies) to seek opportunities to improve material efficiency in their upstream supply chains under different short-run carbon price scenarios. Because of the underlying assumptions, the incentives are interpreted as overestimates. The principal result of the paper is that these generous estimates of the incentives for material efficiency caused by a carbon price are offset by the disincentives to material efficiency caused by labour taxes. Reliance on a carbon price alone to deliver material efficiency would therefore be misguided and additional policy interventions to support material efficiency should be considered. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

We fabricate a saturable absorber mirror by coating a graphenefilm on an output coupler mirror. This is then used to obtain Q-switched mode-locking from a diode-pumped linear cavity channel waveguide laser inscribed in Ytterbium-doped Bismuthate Glass. The laser produces 1.06 ps pulses at ∼1039 nm, with a 1.5 GHz repetition rate, 48% slope efficiency and 202 mW average output power. This performance is due to the combination of the graphene saturable absorber and the high quality optical waveguides in the laser glass. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

As part of the investigations into a surgical incident involving the accidental retention inside a patient's venous system of a guide wire for central venous catheterisation (CVC), the Human Error Assessment and Reduction Technique (HEART) was used to examine the potential for further occurrences. It was found to be time-efficient and to yield plausible probabilities of human error, although its use in healthcare has challenges, suggesting adaptation would be beneficial.

This paper gives a new solution to the output feedback H2 model matching problem for a large class of delayed information sharing patterns. Existing methods for similar problems typically reduce the decentralized problem to a centralized problem of higher state dimension. In contrast, this paper demonstrates that the decentralized model matching solution can be constructed from the original centralized solution via quadratic programming. © 2013 AACC American Automatic Control Council.

An approach to designing a constrained output-feedback predictive controller that has the same small-signal properties as a pre-existing output-feedback linear time invariant controller is proposed. Systematic guidelines are proposed to select an appropriate (non-unique) realization of the resulting state observer. A method is proposed to transform a class of offset-free reference tracking controllers into the combination of an observer, steady-state target calculator and predictive controller. The procedure is demonstrated with a numerical example. © 2013 IEEE.

The solution time of the online optimization problems inherent to Model Predictive Control (MPC) can become a critical limitation when working in embedded systems. One proposed approach to reduce the solution time is to split the optimization problem into a number of reduced order problems, solve such reduced order problems in parallel and selecting the solution which minimises a global cost function. This approach is known as Parallel MPC. The potential capabilities of disturbance rejection are introduced using a simulation example. The algorithm is implemented in a linearised model of a Boeing 747-200 under nominal flight conditions and with an induced wind disturbance. Under significant output disturbances Parallel MPC provides a significant improvement in performance when compared to Multiplexed MPC (MMPC) and Linear Quadratic Synchronous MPC (SMPC). © 2013 IEEE.

Teleost vitellogenins (VTGs) are large multidomain apolipoproteins and traditionally considered as the estrogen responsive precursors of the major egg yolk proteins. We identified five clones encoding VTGs, about 16% of the random EST clones from our constructed cDNA library from Chinese rare minnow liver tissue treated with 17 beta-estradiol (E2). Full-length vtgAo1 has been obtained based on the sequence information of four partial cDNA inserts by RACE. The inducibility of the vtgAo1 expression in liver by E2 was confirmed by RT-PCR. The presence of vtgAo1 transcripts have been observed primarily in liver. However. a significant level of the vtgAo1 was found in an unexpected location, heart, particularly in atrial cells by RT-PCR and whole mount in situ hybridization analyses. The vtgAo1 mRNA expression in heart and liver tissue could be suppressed by both alpha-adrenergic agonist, phenylephrine (PE) and beta-adrenergic agonist, isoproterenol (ISO). The expression of VTG in the heart observed in the present studies suggested it may provide protection from surplus intracellular lipids in fish cardiomyocytes as triglyceride transport proteins do in mammals. The results also indicated that the production of teleost vtg in vivo can be regulated by riot only estrogenic agents, but adrenergic signals as well. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The distribution of microcystins (MCs) in various tissues of Wistar rats was studied under laboratory conditions. Rats were injected intravenously (i.v.) with extracted MCs at a dose of 80 mu g MC-LRequivalent/kg body weight. MCs concentrations in various tissues were detected at 1, 2. 4, 6, 12 and 24 h post-injection using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The highest concentration of MCs was found in kidney (0.034-0.295 mu g/g dry weight), followed by lung (0.007-0.067 mu g/g dry weight), stomach (0.010-0.058 mu g/g dry weight) and liver (0.003-0.052 mu g/g dry weight). The maximum MCs content in the whole body of rat, 2.9% of the injected dose, was observed at 2 h post-injection. MCs concentration was higher in kidney than in liver during the experiment, and two peaks of MCs concentration (at 2 and 24 h, respectively) were observed in kidney, indicating that MCs can be excreted directly via kidney of rat. Though heart, intestine, spleen, brain, gonad and stomach contained less than 0.2% of injected MCs during the whole experiment stage, the presence of MCs in these tissues represents potential damage to them. This study examined the toxic effects of microcystins on mitochondria of liver and heart of rabbit in vivo. Rabbits were injected i.p. with extracted microcystins (mainly MC-RR and -LR) at two doses, 12.5 and 50 MCLReq. mu g/kg bw, and the changes in mitochondria of liver and heart were studied at 1, 3,12, 24 and 48 h after injection. MCs induced damage of mitochondrial morphology and lipid peroxidation in both liver and heart. MCs influenced respiratory activity through inhibiting NADH dehydrogenase and enhancing succinate dehydrogenase (SDH). MCs altered Na+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase activities of mitochondria and consequently disrupted ionic homeostasis, which might be partly responsible for the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). MCs were highly toxic to mitochondria with more serious damage in liver than in heart. Damage of mitochondria showed reduction at 48 h in the low dose group, suggesting that the low dose of MCs might have stimulated a compensatory response in the rabbits. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Mode competitions between modes with different output coupling efficiencies can result in optical bistability under certain asymmetric nonlinear gain. For a GaInAsP/InP equilateral triangle microlaser with the side length of 10 mu m, the drop of the output power with the increase of the injection current is observed corresponding to transverse mode transitions. Furthermore, the measured laser spectra up to 270 K show that lasing modes coexist with the wavelength interval of 39 nm at 240 K. The emission at 5.2 THz can be expected by the mode frequency beating with the 39 nm interval.

Mode characteristics of a square microcavity with an output waveguide on the middle of one side, laterally confined by an insulating layer SiO2 and a p-electrode metal Au, are investigated by two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain technique. The mode quality (Q) factors versus the width of the output waveguide are calculated for Fabry-Peacuterot type and whispering-gallery type modes in the square cavity. Mode coupling between the confined modes in the square cavity and the guided modes in the output waveguide determines the mode Q factors, which is greatly influenced by the symmetry behaviors of the modes. Fabry-Peacuterot type modes can also have high Q factors due to the high reflectivity of the Au layer for the vertical incident mode light rays. For the square cavity with side length 4 mu m and refractive index 3.2, the mode Q factors of the Fabry-Peacuterot type modes can reach 10(4) at the mode wavelength of 1.5 mu m as the output waveguide width is 0.4 mu m.
