Krabbe's disease (galactocerebrosidase deficiency) rarely presents in adults, usually with predominantly upper motor neurone clinical features. We report a case in whom the clinical features were similar to motor neurone disease. Nerve conduction studies and neuroimaging were important in leading to the correct diagnosis. The effect of number of samples and selection of data for analysis on the calculation of surface motor unit potential (SMUP) size in the statistical method of motor unit number estimates (MUNE) was determined in 10 normal subjects and 10 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We recorded 500 sequential compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) at three different stable stimulus intensities (10–50% of maximal CMAP). Estimated mean SMUP sizes were calculated using Poisson statistical assumptions from the variance of 500 sequential CMAP obtained at each stimulus intensity. The results with the 500 data points were compared with smaller subsets from the same data set. The results using a range of 50–80% of the 500 data points were compared with the full 500. The effect of restricting analysis to data between 5–20% of the CMAP and to standard deviation limits was also assessed. No differences in mean SMUP size were found with stimulus intensity or use of different ranges of data. Consistency was improved with a greater sample number. Data within 5% of CMAP size gave both increased consistency and reduced mean SMUP size in many subjects, but excluded valid responses present at that stimulus intensity. These changes were more prominent in ALS patients in whom the presence of isolated SMUP responses was a striking difference from normal subjects. Noise, spurious data, and large SMUP limited the Poisson assumptions. When these factors are considered, consistent statistical MUNE can be calculated from a continuous sequence of data points. Recent studies have revealed regional variation in the density and distribution of inhibitory neurons in different cortical areas, which are thought to reflect area-specific specializations in cortical circuitry. However, there are as yet few standardized quantitative data regarding how the inhibitory circuitry in prefrontal cortex (PFC), which is thought to be involved in executive functions such as cognition, emotion and decision making, compares to that in other cortical areas. Here we used immunohistochemical techniques to determine the density and distribution of parvalbumin (PV)-, calbindin (CB)-, and calretinin (CR)-immunoreactive (ir) neurons and axon terminals in the dorsolateral and orbital PFC of the owl monkey (Aotus trivirgatus), and compared them directly with data obtained using the same techniques in 11 different visual, somatosensory and motor areas. We found marked differences in the density of PV-ir, CB-ir, and CR-ir interneurons in several cortical areas. One hundred and twenty eight of all 234 possible between-area pairwise comparisons were significantly different. The density of specific subpopulations of these cells also varied among cortical areas, as did the density of axon terminals. Comparison of PFC with other cortical areas revealed that 40 of all 66 possible statistical comparisons of the density of PV-ir, CB-ir, and CR-ir cells were significantly different. We also found evidence for heterogeneity in the pattern of labeling of PV-ir, CB-ir, and CR-ir cells and axon terminals between the dorsolateral and orbital subdivisions of PFC. These data are likely to reflect basic differences in interneuron circuitry, which are likely to influence inhibitory function in the cortex. Copyright (C) 2003 S. Karger AG, Basel.

More and more current software systems rely on non trivial coordination logic for combining autonomous services typically running on different platforms and often owned by different organizations. Often, however, coordination data is deeply entangled in the code and, therefore, difficult to isolate and analyse separately. COORDINSPECTOR is a software tool which combines slicing and program analysis techniques to isolate all coordination elements from the source code of an existing application. Such a reverse engineering process provides a clear view of the actually invoked services as well as of the orchestration patterns which bind them together. The tool analyses Common Intermediate Language (CIL) code, the native language of Microsoft .Net Framework. Therefore, the scope of application of COORDINSPECTOR is quite large: potentially any piece of code developed in any of the programming languages which compiles to the .Net Framework. The tool generates graphical representations of the coordination layer together and identifies the underlying business process orchestrations, rendering them as Orc specifications

A large and growing amount of software systems rely on non-trivial coordination logic for making use of third party services or components. Therefore, it is of outmost importance to understand and capture rigorously this continuously growing layer of coordination as this will make easier not only the veri cation of such systems with respect to their original speci cations, but also maintenance, further development, testing, deployment and integration. This paper introduces a method based on several program analysis techniques (namely, dependence graphs, program slicing, and graph pattern analysis) to extract coordination logic from legacy systems source code. This process is driven by a series of pre-de ned coordination patterns and captured by a special purpose graph structure from which coordination speci cations can be generated in a number of di erent formalisms

The integration and composition of software systems requires a good architectural design phase to speed up communications between (remote) components. However, during implementation phase, the code to coordinate such components often ends up mixed in the main business code. This leads to maintenance problems, raising the need for, on the one hand, separating the coordination code from the business code, and on the other hand, providing mechanisms for analysis and comprehension of the architectural decisions once made. In this context our aim is at developing a domain-specific language, CoordL, to describe typical coordination patterns. From our point of view, coordination patterns are abstractions, in a graph form, over the composition of coordination statements from the system code. These patterns would allow us to identify, by means of pattern-based graph search strategies, the code responsible for the coordination of the several components in a system. The recovering and separation of the architectural decisions for a better comprehension of the software is the main purpose of this pattern language

What sort of component coordination strategies emerge in a software integration process? How can such strategies be discovered and further analysed? How close are they to the coordination component of the envisaged architectural model which was supposed to guide the integration process? This paper introduces a framework in which such questions can be discussed and illustrates its use by describing part of a real case-study. The approach is based on a methodology which enables semi-automatic discovery of coordination patterns from source code, combining generalized slicing techniques and graph manipulation

Current software development relies increasingly on non-trivial coordination logic for com- bining autonomous services often running on di erent platforms. As a rule, however, in typical non-trivial software systems, such a coordination layer is strongly weaved within the application at source code level. Therefore, its precise identi cation becomes a major methodological (and technical) problem which cannot be overestimated along any program understanding or refactoring process. Open access to source code, as granted in OSS certi cation, provides an opportunity for the devel- opment of methods and technologies to extract, from source code, the relevant coordination information. This paper is a step in this direction, combining a number of program analysis techniques to automatically recover coordination information from legacy code. Such information is then expressed as a model in Orc, a general purpose orchestration language

Foram estudadas algumas características dos óbitos por acidentes de trânsito de veículos a motor, no município de São Paulo, ocorridos entre 1.° de janeiro a 31 de dezembro de 1970. Todas as características do falecido e do acidente foram coletadas a partir dos dados registrados nos laudos de necrópsias existentes no Instituto Médico Legal. O estudo evidenciou que a mortalidade por acidentes de veículo a motor é alta, maior no sexo masculino, aumenta com a idade, sendo que o maior coeficiente foi para maiores de 60 anos. A zona da cidade com maior número de acidentes é a zona Sul, existindo áreas (distritos policiais) e vias públicas preferenciais quanto a ocorrência, em todas as 4 zonas do município; a maior ocorrência de acidentes foi aos sábados e domingos; os pedestres compreendem a grande maioria dos falecidos; proporção apreciável dos falecidos recebeu atendimento hospitalar após o acidente. Foram relacionados também o número total de acidentes, vítimas e mortes mostrando que para cada 100 acidentes ocorreram 62,50 vítimas e 5,13 mortes, e para cada 100 vítimas, 18, 22 mortes.

Foi realizado um estudo com o objetivo de descrever certos aspectos epidemiológicos dos acidentes de trânsito de veículo a motor, na cidade do Salvador, Bahia, Brasil, o qual envolveu coleta de informações no Departamento de Trânsito (DETRAN) e no Instituto de Medicina Legal. Ficou demonstrado que os acidentes de trânsito de veículo a motor são mais freqüentes ao fim da tarde e concentram-se, sobretudo, no fim de semana, isto é, sábado e domingo. Motoristas do sexo masculino foram muito mais freqüentemente envolvidos em acidentes de trânsito do que os do sexo feminino. Foi concluído que os acidentes fatais envolvendo pedestres constituem-se importante problema urbano necessitando cuidadosa atenção por parte de educadores e dos serviços públicos responsáveis pelo setor do trânsito. Foi sugerida a necessidade de melhorar e tornar mais uniforme o sistema de notificação e classificação dos acidentes de veículo a motor pelo DETRAN da cidade do Salvador.

Introdução: A Motor Assessment Scale (MAS) tem mostrado ser um instrumento válido e fidedigno na avaliação do progresso clínico de indivíduos que sofreram um Acidente Vascular Cerebral (AVC). Objectivos: Traduzir e adaptar a MAS à realidade portuguesa e contribuir para a validação da versão portuguesa, avaliando a sua consistência interna. Metodologia: Após um processo de tradução, revisão por peritos, retroversão e comparação com a versão original, obteve-se a versão portuguesa da MAS. Procedeu-se a um estudo correlacional transversal para avaliação da consistência interna; a amostra final incluiu 30 sujeitos, 16 do sexo masculino e 14 do sexo feminino, com idades entre os 42 e 85 anos (média de 64±11,85 anos), com hemiparésia ou hemiplegia decorrente de AVC e que realizavam fisioterapia em um de 6 Hospitais seleccionados por conveniência; a média do tempo de diagnóstico foi de 306±1322,82 dias e do tempo de fisioterapia foi de 47±57,57 dias. Resultados: Obteve-se uma média de 24±14,51 pontos nas pontuações totais e um coeficiente de Alfa de Cronbach de 0,939, sem a exclusão de qualquer item; as correlações inter item variaram entre 0,395 e 0,916. Conclusões: Apesar da reduzida amostra e da sua heterogeneidade nas características e pontuações da escala, a Versão Portuguesa da MAS apresentou uma forte consistência interna, verificando-se que os itens estão, na sua maioria, muito correlacionados entre si, o que sustenta a adequação de cada item e apoia que, de forma geral, esta escala tem uma concepção lógica e estruturada.

O bom desempenho dos motores de indução trifásicos, ao nível do binário, em velocidades de funcionamento abaixo da velocidade nominal, faz deles uma boa opção para realizar o controlo de velocidade nesta gama de velocidades. Actualmente, com o rápido avanço da electrónica de potência é mais acessível a implementação de dispositivos que permitam variar a velocidade dos motores de indução trifásicos, contribuindo para que estas máquinas sejam cada vez mais utilizadas em accionamentos de velocidade variável. Este trabalho tem como objectivo o estudo prático da utilização da técnica de controlo escalar por variação simultânea da tensão e frequência (V/f) no accionamento do motor de indução trifásico. Para o efeito, foi implementado um conversor de potência compacto do tipo ondulador de tensão trifásico. Os sinais de comando para o conversor, que utilizam a modulação por largura de impulso, são gerados por um microcontrolador, que para além das capacidades normais de um dispositivo desse tipo, pemite ainda o processamento digital de sinal. O microcontrolador permite ainda a monitorização da velocidade de rotação do motor e da corrente no motor. A análise do desempenho do sistema incide essencialmente sobre o controlo da velocidade de rotação do motor, tendo sido criadas várias condições de funcionamento, com diferentes inclinações das rampas de aceleração e desaceleração.
