ANTECEDENTES.- Las infecciones de vías urinarias son causadas por bacterias, hongos y parásitos a nivel mundial.1Esta investigación se realizó en los habitantes de la comunidad de Sarapamba Yutuloma. OBJETIVO.- Determinar la prevalencia de infección de vías urinarias y sus factores asociados en los habitantes de la comunidad de Sarapamba Yutuloma Tambo. METODOLOGÍA.- La investigación fue de tipo descriptivo transversal, se trabajó con un universo de 280 habitantes de la comunidad. El tamaño de la muestra fue calculada con la fórmula finita con un nivel de confiabilidad del 95%.el resultado de la población a estudiar fue de 180 habitantes. Los participantes de esta investigación firmaron o colocaron su huella digital en el consentimiento informado en mayores o asentimiento para menores de edad, personas analfabetas o discapacitadas, llenaron una encuesta que han sido elaborados en base al modelo de Vigilancia STEPS de los factores de riesgo de enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles de la OMS 2010 aplicado en Suiza. Las muestras fueron recolectadas bajo normas de Bioseguridad, estas fueron procesadas en el Laboratorio del Centro de Diagnóstico de la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas de la Universidad de Cuenca. La información obtenida se registró en los programas, SPSS V 22 y Excel para hacer el análisis y las estadísticas. RESULTADOS.- El 16,1% de los habitantes de Sarapamba Yutuloma tiene infección del tracto urinario, el 86,2% son mujeres, el 13,8 son varones, 72,4% en edades comprendidas entre 22 y 53 años y el 89,9% al mantener actividad sexual.

The polar hydroethanolic extract from Selaginella sellowii (SSPHE) has been previously proven active on intracellular amastigotes (in vitro test) and now was tested on hamsters infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis (in vivo test). SSPHE suppressed a 100% of the parasite load in the infection site and draining lymph nodes at an intralesional dose of 50 mg/kg/day × 5, which was similar to the results observed in hamsters treated with N-methylglucamine antimonate (Sb) (28 mg/Kg/day × 5). When orally administered, SSPHE (50 mg/kg/day × 20) suppressed 99.2% of the parasite load in infected footpads, while Sb suppressed 98.5%. SSPHE also enhanced the release of nitric oxide through the intralesional route in comparison to Sb. The chemical fingerprint of SSPHE by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection and tandem mass spectrometry showed the presence of biflavonoids and high molecular weight phenylpropanoid glycosides. These compounds may have a synergistic action in vivo. Histopathological study revealed that the intralesional treatment with SSPHE induced an intense inflammatory infiltrate, composed mainly of mononuclear cells. The present findings reinforce the potential of this natural product as a source of future drug candidates for American cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Purpose: To investigate the spectrum-effect relationships between high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprints and duodenum contractility of charred areca nut (CAN) on rats. Methods: An HPLC method was used to establish the fingerprint of charred areca nut (CAN). The promoting effect on contractility of intestinal smooth was carried out to evaluate the duodenum contractility of CAN in vitro. In addition, the spectrum-effect relationships between HPLC fingerprints and bioactivities of CAN were investigated using multiple linear regression analysis (backward method). Results: Fourteen common peaks were detected and peak 3 (5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furfural, 5-HMF) was selected as the reference peak to calculate the relative retention time of 13 other common peaks. In addition, the equation of spectrum-effect relationships {Y = 3.818 - 1.126X1 + 0.817X2 - 0.045X4 - 0.504X5 + 0.728X6 - 0.056X8 + 1.122X9 - 0.247X13 - 0.978X14 (p < 0.05, R2 = 1)} was established in the present study by the multiple linear regression analysis (backward method). According to the equation, the absolute value of the coefficient before X1, X2, X4, X5, X6, X8, X9, X13, X14 was the coefficient between the component and the parameter. Conclusion: The model presented in this study successfully unraveled the spectrum-effect relationship of CAN, which provides a promising strategy for screening effective constituents of areca nut.

Oligophenylenes (polyphenylenes) are constituted by an array of conjugated benzenes where inter-ring electron delocalization tends to extend over the whole chain (linear conjugation) being intrinsically limited, among other factors, by terminal effects. Alternatively, cyclic conjugation is envisaged as the unlimited free-boundary versionofconjugation which will impact the structure of molecules in rather unknown ways. The cyclic version of oligophenylenes, cycloparaphenylenes ([n]CPPs with n the number of phenyl rings) were first synthesized in 2008 by Beztozzi and Jasti.1 Today the whole [n]CPP series from [5]CPP to [18]CPP has been prepared. [n]CPPs represent ideal models to investigate new insights of the electronic structure of molecules and cyclic conjugation when electrons or charges circulate in a closed circuit without boundaries. Radical cations and dications of [n]CPP from n=5 to n=12 have been prepared and studied by Raman spectroscopy.2 Small [n]CPP dications own their stability to the closed-shell electronic configuration imposed by cyclic conjugation. However, in large [n]CPP dications cyclic conjugation is minimal and these divalent species form open-shell biradicals. The Raman spectra reflect the effect of cyclic conjugation in competition with cyclic strain and biradicaloid aromatic stabilization. Cyclic conjugation provokes the existence of a turning point or V-shape behavior of the frequencies of the G bands as a function of n. Obesity affects the functional capability of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) and their effective use in regenerative medicine through mechanisms still poorly understood. Here we employed a multiplatform (LC/MS, CE/MS, GC/MS) metabolomics untargeted approach to investigate the metabolic alteration underlying the inequalities observed in obese-derived ASCs. The metabolic fingerprint (metabolites within the cells) and footprint (metabolites secreted in the culture medium) from humans or mice, obese and non-obese derived ASCs, were characterized by providing valuable information. Metabolites associated to glycolysis, TCA, pentose phosphate pathway and polyol pathway were increased in the footprint of obese-derived human ASCs indicating alterations in the carbohydrate metabolism; whereas from the murine model, deep differences in lipid and amino acid catabolism were highlighted. Therefore, new insights on the ASCs metabolome were provided that enhance our understanding of the processes underlying the ASCs stemness capacity and its relationship with obesity, in different cell models.

Introducción: La rápida detección e identificación bacteriana es fundamental para el manejo de los pacientes críticos que presentan una patología infecciosa, esto requiere de métodos rápidos para el inicio de un correcto tratamiento. En Colombia se usan pruebas microbiología convencional. No hay estudios de espectrofotometría de masas en análisis de muestras de pacientes críticos en Colombia. Objetivo general: Describir la experiencia del análisis microbiológico mediante la tecnología MALDI-TOF MS en muestras tomadas en la Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá. Materiales y Métodos: Entre junio y julio de 2013, se analizaron 147 aislamientos bacterianos de muestras clínicas, las cuales fueron procesadas previamente por medio del sistema VITEK II. Los aislamientos correspondieron a 88 hemocultivos (60%), 28 urocultivos (19%), y otros cultivos 31 (21%). Resultados: Se obtuvieron 147 aislamientos con identificación adecuada a nivel de género y/o especie así: en el 88.4% (130 muestras) a nivel de género y especie, con una concordancia del 100% comparado con el sistema VITEK II. El porcentaje de identificación fue de 66% en el grupo de bacilos gram negativos no fermentadores, 96% en enterobacterias, 100% en gérmenes fastidiosos, 92% en cocos gram positivos, 100% bacilos gram negativos móviles y 100% en levaduras. No se encontró ninguna concordancia en bacilos gram positivos y gérmenes del genero Aggregatibacter. Conclusiones: El MALDI-TOF es una prueba rápida para la identificación microbiológica de género y especie que concuerda con los resultados obtenidos de manera convencional. Faltan estudios para hacer del MALDI-TOF MS la prueba oro en identificación de gérmenes.
