We propose a scheme for the determination of the coupling parameters in a chain of interacting spins. This requires only time-resolved measurements over a single particle, simple data postprocessing and no state initialization or prior knowledge of the state of the chain. The protocol fits well into the context of quantum-dynamics characterization and is efficient even when the spin chain is affected by general dissipative and dephasing channels. We illustrate the performance of the scheme by analyzing explicit examples and discuss possible extensions.

We consider the class of crossed products of noetherian domains with universal enveloping algebras of Lie algebras. For algebras from this class we give a sufficient condition for the existence of projective non-free modules. This class includes Weyl algebras and universal envelopings of Lie algebras, for which this question, known as noncommutative Serre's problem, was extensively studied before. It turns out that the method of lifting of non-trivial stably free modules from simple Ore extensions can be applied to crossed products after an appropriate choice of filtration. The motivating examples of crossed products are provided by the class of RIT algebras, originating in non-equilibrium physics.

This paper provides an overview of rich biblical imagery related to the mouth, built around the conceptual metaphor MOUTH IS AN OPENING, followed by a critical analysis of four text units from both Testaments employing the basic extensions of this metaphor in the renderings of twelve contemporary English versions of the Bible. It is demonstrated that the meaningful choice of translating techniques and the type of equivalence pursued in translation must be based on a thorough examination and comparison of the conceptual systems of the source and target languages.

To use profilometry to assess the margin surface profile of all-ceramic crowns (ACC’s) at try-in and 1-week after cementation with dual-cured resin (DC, RelyX ARC, 3 M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA), self-adhesive dual-cured resin (SADC, RelyX Unicem, 3 M ESPE), light-cured resin (LC, RelyX Veneer, 3 M ESPE) or chemically cured resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI, RelyX Luting Plus, 3 M ESPE) luting cement. Methods: Forty, sound, extracted, human, premolar teeth underwent a standardised preparation for ACC’s. IPS Empress (Ivoclar-Vivadent, Liechtenstein) crowns of standard dimensions were fabricated and 10 luted with each cement and stored in water for 7 days. Three groups of serial profiles were taken, the first of the tooth preparation, the second of the crown margins at try-in and lastly of the crown margins after cementation and 7 days water storage. Results: There were no significant differences in the crown margin surface profile between the four cement groups at try-in. The change in crown margin position between try-in and post-cementation was significantly greater for DC than for LC and RMGI. SADC was not significantly different to the other cements. There were no significant differences in the crown margin extensions between the four cement groups, however most of the IPS Empress ACC’s in this study were underextended but this was not statistically significant. Conclusions: IPS Empress ACC’s seated more fully with LC and RMGI than with DC cement

In this work we characterise the C*-algebras $\mathcal{A}$ generated by projections with the property that every pair of projections in $\mathcal{A}$ has positive angle, as certain extensions of abelian algebras by algebras of compact operators. We show that this property is equivalent to a lattice theoretic property of projections and also to the property that the set of finite dimensional *-subalgebras of $\mathcal{A}$ is directed.

Histone deacetylases ( HDACs) 1 and 2 share a high degree of homology and coexist within the same protein complexes. Despite their close association, each possesses unique functions. We show that the upregulation of HDAC2 in colorectal cancer occurred early at the polyp stage, was more robust and occurred more frequently than HDAC1. Similarly, while the expression of HDACs1 and 2 were increased in cervical dysplasia and invasive carcinoma, HDAC2 expression showed a clear demarcation of high-intensity staining at the transition region of dysplasia compared to HDAC1. Upon HDAC2 knockdown, cells displayed an increased number of cellular extensions reminiscent of cell differentiation. There was also an increase in apoptosis, associated with increased p21(Cip1/WAF1) expression that was independent of p53. These results suggest that HDACs, especially HDAC2, are important enzymes involved in the early events of carcinogenesis, making them candidate markers for tumor progression and targets for cancer therapy.

The localisation and distribution of the cytoskeletal protein tubulin in the adult liver fluke Fasciola hepatica have been determined by an indirect immunofluorescence technique using a monoclonal antibody raised against beta-tubulin. Tubulin was demonstrated in the tegumental syncytium and in the tegumental cell bodies and their cytoplasmic connections with the surface syncytium. Immunostaining was also evident in the nerve fibres innervating sensory receptors in the tegument, in the nerve plexus innervating the sub-tegumental musculature and in the cytoplasmic extensions of the nurse cells within the vitelline follicle. Immunoblotting of whole fluke fractions produced a single band corresponding to a molecule of approximately 54 kDa in size. This figure corresponds with previous data obtained on tubulin from other helminth and eukaryotic sources.

The relationship between biodiversity and ecological processes is currently the focus of considerable research effort, made all the more urgent by the rate of biodiversity loss world-wide. Rigorous experimental approaches to this question have been dominated by terrestrial ecologists, but shallow-water marine systems offer great opportunities by virtue of their relative ease of manipulation, fast response times and well-understood effects of macrofauna on sediment processes. In this paper, we describe a series of experiments whereby species richness has been manipulated in a controlled way and the concentrations of nutrients (ammonium, nitrate and phosphate) in the overlying water measured under these different treatments. The results indicate variable effects of species and location on ecosystem processes, and are discussed in the context of emerging mainstream ecological theory on biodiversity and ecosystem relations. Extensions of the application of the experimental approach to species-rich, large-scale benthic systems are discussed and the potential for novel analyses of existing data sets is highlighted. Biodiversity is not a commodity, nor a service (ecosystem or otherwise), it is a scientific measure of the complexity of a biological system. Rather than directly valuing biodiversity, economists have tended to value its services, more often the services of 'key' species. This is understandable given the confusion of definitions and measures of biodiversity, but weakly justified if biodiversity is not substitutable. We provide a quantitative and comprehensive definition of biodiversity and propose a framework for examining its substitutability as the first step towards valuation. We define biodiversity as a measure of semiotic information. It is equated with biocomplexity and measured by Algorithmic Information Content (AIC). We argue that the potentially valuable component of this is functional information content (FIC) which determines biological fitness and supports ecosystem services. Inspired by recent extensions to the Noah's Ark problem, we show how FIC/AIC can be calculated to measure the degree of substitutability within an ecological community. From this, we derive a way to rank whole communities by Indirect Use Value, through quantifying the relation between system complexity and production rate of ecosystem services. Understanding biodiversity as information evidently serves as a practical interface between economics and ecological science.

The use of B-spline basis sets in R-matrix theory for scattering processes has been investigated. In the present approach a B-spline basis is used for the description of the inner region, which is matched to the physical outgoing wavefunctions by the R-matrix. Using B-splines, continuum basis functions can be determined easily, while pseudostates can be included naturally. The accuracy for low-energy scattering processes is demonstrated by calculating inelastic scattering cross sections for e colliding on H. Very good agreement with other calculations has been obtained. Further extensions of the codes to quasi two-electron systems and general atoms are discussed as well as the application to (multi) photoionization.

Relying on Brown’s (2005a, b) thesis that contemporary shifts in penal policy are best understood as a reprisal of colonial rationality, so that offenders become ‘non-citizens’ or ‘agents of obligation’, this article argues that this framework finds support in developments in Irish criminal justice policy. Recent legislation aimed at offenders suspected of involvement in ‘organised crime’ is examined through this lens. These offenders have found themselves reconstituted as ‘agents of obligation’ with duties to furnish information about their property and movements, report to the police concerning their location and, importantly, refrain from criminal activity or face extraordinary sanctions. It is therefore argued that this paradigm is a useful heuristic device through which to understand recent developments in Irish criminal justice and elsewhere. In light of the trends observed in Ireland, certain refinements and extensions to Brown’s argument are put forward for consideration.

Making a decision is often a matter of listing and comparing positive and negative arguments. In such cases, the evaluation scale for decisions should be considered bipolar, that is, negative and positive values should be explicitly distinguished. That is what is done, for example, in Cumulative Prospect Theory. However, contrary to the latter framework that presupposes genuine numerical assessments, human agents often decide on the basis of an ordinal ranking of the pros and the cons, and by focusing on the most salient arguments. In other terms, the decision process is qualitative as well as bipolar. In this article, based on a bipolar extension of possibility theory, we define and axiomatically characterize several decision rules tailored for the joint handling of positive and negative arguments in an ordinal setting. The simplest rules can be viewed as extensions of the maximin and maximax criteria to the bipolar case, and consequently suffer from poor decisive power. More decisive rules that refine the former are also proposed. These refinements agree both with principles of efficiency and with the spirit of order-of-magnitude reasoning, that prevails in qualitative decision theory. The most refined decision rule uses leximin rankings of the pros and the cons, and the ideas of counting arguments of equal strength and cancelling pros by cons. It is shown to come down to a special case of Cumulative Prospect Theory, and to subsume the “Take the Best” heuristic studied by cognitive psychologists.

When multiple sources provide information about the same unknown quantity, their fusion into a synthetic interpretable message is often a tedious problem, especially when sources are conicting. In this paper, we propose to use possibility theory and the notion of maximal coherent subsets, often used in logic-based representations, to build a fuzzy belief structure that will be instrumental both for extracting useful information about various features of the information conveyed by the sources and for compressing this information into a unique possibility distribution. Extensions and properties of the basic fusion rule are also studied.
