We estimate transverse spin single spin asymmetry(TSSA) in the process e + p(up arrow) -> J/psi + X using color evaporation model of charmonium production. We take into account transverse momentum dependent(TMD) evolution of Sivers function and parton distribution function and show that the there is a reduction in the asymmetry as compared to our earlier estimates wherein the Q(2) - evolution was implemented only through DGLAP evolution of unpolarized gluon densities.
Influence of initial degree of saturation on swell pressures of compacted Barmer bentonite specimens
Resumo:
Densely compacted bentonite or bentonite-sand mixture has been identified as suitable buffer in deep geological repositories as its exceptionally high swelling capacity enables tight contact between the waste canister and surrounding rock. The degree of saturation of the compacted bentonite buffer can increase upon ingress of groundwater from the surrounding rock mass or decrease from evaporation due to high temperature (50-210 degrees C) derived from the waste canister. Available studies indicate that the influence of initial moisture content or degree of saturation on the swell pressure or swell potential of compacted bentonites is unclear. Some studies suggest that initial degree of saturation has an influence, while others suggest that it does not have bearing on the swell pressure of compacted bentonites. This paper examines the influence of initial degree of saturation in montmorillonite voids (termed,S-r,S-MF) on swell pressure of compacted Barmer bentonite-sand mixtures (dry density range: 1.4-2 Mg/m(3)) from micro-structural considerations. The experimental results bring out that, constant dry density specimens that developed similar number of hydration layers upon wetting developed comparable swell pressures and were unaffected by variations in initial S-r,S-MF values. Comparatively, constant dry density specimens that developed dis-similar number of hydration layers upon wetting established different swell pressures and were responsive to variations in initial S-r,S-MF. Thin films of SbxSe60-xS40( x= 10, 20, 30, and 40) were deposited by thermal evaporation from the prepared bulk materials on glass substrates held at room temperature. The film compositions were confirmed by using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that all the as- deposited films have amorphous structure. The optical constants ( n, k, E-g, E-e, B-1/2) of the films were determined from optical transmittance data, in the spectral range 500-1200 nm, using the Swanepoel method. An analysis of the optical absorption spectra revealed an Urbach's tail in the low absorption region, while in the high absorption region an indirect band gap characterizes the films with different compositions. It was found that the optical band gap energy decreases as the Sb content increases. Finally, in terms of the chemical bond approach, degree of disorderness has been applied to interpret the decrease in the optical gap with increasing Sb content in SbxSe60-xS40 thin films. The changes in X-ray photo electron spectra and Raman shift in the films show compositional dependence. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The atomization characteristics of aviation biofuel discharging from a simplex swirl atomizer into quiescent atmospheric air are studied. The aviation biofuel is a mixture of 90% commercially available camelina-derived biofuel and 10% VonSol-53 (aromatics). The experiments are conducted in a spray test facility at varying fuel flow rate conditions. The measured characteristics include atomizer flow number, spray cone angle, breakup length of liquid sheet, wavelength of undulations on liquid sheet, and spray droplet size. The characteristics of biofuel sheet breakup are deduced from the captured images of biofuel spray. The measurements of spray droplet size distribution are obtained using Spraytec. The experimentally measured characteristics of the biofuel sheet breakup are compared with the predictions obtained from the liquid film breakup model proposed by Senecal et al. (1999). The measurements of wavelength and breakup length of the biofuel sheet discharging from the simplex swirl atomizer agree well with the model predictions. The model-predicted droplet size for the biofuel spray is significantly higher than the experimentally measured Sauter mean diameter (SMD). The spray droplets formed from the liquid sheet breakup undergo secondary atomization until 35-45 mm from the atomizer exit and thereafter the SMD increases downstream due to the combined effect of fuel evaporation and droplet coalescence. A good comparison is observed between the experimentally measured SMD of the biofuel spray and the predictions obtained using the empirical correlation reported in literature for sprays discharging from simplex swirl atomizers. Growth of highly dense ZnO nanowires (ZnO NWs) is demonstrated on three-dimensional graphene foam (GF) using resistive thermal evaporation technique. Photoresponse of the as-grown hybrid structure of ZnO NWs on GF (ZnO NWs/GF) is evaluated for ultraviolet (UV) detection. Excellent photoresponse with fast response and recovery times of 9.5 and 38 s with external quantum efficiency of 2490.8% is demonstrated at low illumination power density of 1.3 mW/cm(2). In addition, due to excellent charge carrier transport, mobility of graphene reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers, hence the lifetime of photogenerated free charge carriers enhances in the photodetectors.

We present estimates of single spin asymmetry (SSA) in the electroproduction of taking into account the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) evolution of the gluon Sivers function and using Color Evaporation Model of charmonium production. We estimate SSA for JLab, HERMES, COMPASS and eRHIC energies using recent parameters for the quark Sivers functions which are fitted using an evolution kernel in which the perturbative part is resummed up to next-to-leading logarithms accuracy. We find that these SSAs are much smaller as compared to our first estimates obtained using DGLAP evolution but are comparable to our estimates obtained using TMD evolution where we had used approximate analytical solution of the TMD evolution equation for the purpose.

We provide a comprehensive physical description of the vaporization, self-assembly, agglomeration, and buckling kinetics of sessile nanofluid droplets pinned on a hydrophobic substrate. We have deciphered five distinct regimes of the droplet life cycle. Regimes I-III consists of evaporation-induced preferential agglomeration that leads to the formation of a unique dome-shaped inhomogeneous shell with a stratified varying-density liquid core. Regime IV involves capillary-pressure-initiated shell buckling and stress-induced shell rupture. Regime V marks rupture-induced cavity inception and growth. We demonstrate through scaling arguments that the growth of the cavity (which controls the final morphology or structure) can be described by a universal function.

This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of five widely used multisatellite precipitation estimates (MPEs) against 1 degrees x 1 degrees gridded rain gauge data set as ground truth over India. One decade observations are used to assess the performance of various MPEs (Climate Prediction Center (CPC)-South Asia data set, CPC Morphing Technique (CMORPH), Precipitation Estimation From Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks, Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission's Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA-3B42), and Global Precipitation Climatology Project). All MPEs have high detection skills of rain with larger probability of detection (POD) and smaller ``missing'' values. However, the detection sensitivity differs from one product (and also one region) to the other. While the CMORPH has the lowest sensitivity of detecting rain, CPC shows highest sensitivity and often overdetects rain, as evidenced by large POD and false alarm ratio and small missing values. All MPEs show higher rain sensitivity over eastern India than western India. These differential sensitivities are found to alter the biases in rain amount differently. All MPEs show similar spatial patterns of seasonal rain bias and root-mean-square error, but their spatial variability across India is complex and pronounced. The MPEs overestimate the rainfall over the dry regions (northwest and southeast India) and severely underestimate over mountainous regions (west coast and northeast India), whereas the bias is relatively small over the core monsoon zone. Higher occurrence of virga rain due to subcloud evaporation and possible missing of small-scale convective events by gauges over the dry regions are the main reasons for the observed overestimation of rain by MPEs. The decomposed components of total bias show that the major part of overestimation is due to false precipitation. The severe underestimation of rain along the west coast is attributed to the predominant occurrence of shallow rain and underestimation of moderate to heavy rain by MPEs. The decomposed components suggest that the missed precipitation and hit bias are the leading error sources for the total bias along the west coast. All evaluation metrics are found to be nearly equal in two contrasting monsoon seasons (southwest and northeast), indicating that the performance of MPEs does not change with the season, at least over southeast India. Among various MPEs, the performance of TMPA is found to be better than others, as it reproduced most of the spatial variability exhibited by the reference.

Hexaazamacrocycle (L) stabilized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared by combining L with HAuCl4 center dot 3H(2)O in a variety of alcohol-water (1 : 1) mixtures. The dual roles of L as a reducing and stabilizing agent were exploited for the synthesis of AuNPs under the optimized ratio of L to Au3+ (2 : 1). Self-assembled gold nanofilms (AuNFs) were constructed at liquid-liquid interfaces by adding equal volumes of hexane to the dispersions of AuNPs in the alcohol-water systems. The nanofilms were formed spontaneously by shaking the two-phase mixture for a minute followed by standing. The alcohols explored for the self-assembly phenomenon were methanol, ethanol, i-propanol and t-butanol. The systems containing methanol or t-butanol resulted in AuNFs at the interfaces, whereas the other two alcohols were found not suitable and the AuNPs remained dispersed in the corresponding alcohol-water medium. The AuNFs prepared under suitable conditions were coated on a variety of surfaces by the dip and lift-off method/solvent removal approach. The AuNFs were characterized by UV-vis, SEM, TEM, AFM and contact angle measurement techniques. A coated glass-vial or cuvette was used as a catalytic reservoir for nitro-reduction reactions under ambient and aqueous conditions using NaBH4 as the reducing agent. The reduced products (amines) were extracted by aqueous work-up using ethyl acetate followed by evaporation of the organic layer; the isolated products required no further purification. The catalyst was recovered by simply decanting the reaction mixture whereupon the isolated catalyst remained coated inside the vessel. The recovered catalyst was found to be equally efficient for further catalytic cycles.

We report the temperature-dependent photoluminescence and Raman spectra of In2O3 octahedrons synthesized by an evaporation condensation process. The luminescence obtained here is due to the defect-related deep level emission, which shows highly temperature-dependent behavior in 83-573 K range. Both the position as well as the intensity varies with temperature. Similarly, Raman spectroscopy in 83-303 K range shows temperature-dependent variation in peak intensity but no change in the peak position. Interestingly, the variation of intensity for different peaks is consistent with Placzek theory which invokes the possibility of temperature sensing. We demonstrate the reversibility of peak intensity with temperature for consecutive cycles and excellent stability of the octahedrons toward cryogenic temperature sensing. Overall, both the temperature-dependent photoluminescence and Raman spectra can be explored to determine temperature in the cryogenic range at micro/nano length scales. As an example, we evaluate the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of WO3 that undergoes a phase transition around 210 K and temperature-dependent luminescence of Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) where intensity varies with temperature.

Colloidal systems offer an effective medium to micro-engineer complex structures without involving sophisticated fabrication procedures. This article presents a deployment strategy of multiple droplets of different colloidal composition and utilizes the inherent capillary flow driven self assembly of nanoparticles to construct stacks of multiple materials on a given glass substrate. Here we used aqueous nano-crystalline titania and nano-amorphous silica solutions as the two materials. Initially, a pure nanotitania (nanosilica) droplet is deployed and allowed to dry partially. Subsequently, a second droplet of pure nanosilica (nanotitania) is deployed co-axially on the partially dried precipitate. The proposed deployment strategy allowed significant morphological differences when the deployment order of nanosilica and nanotitania were interchanged. Compositional analysis performed using EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) showed preferential deposition of nanosilica and nanotitania along the radial as well as the axial plane of the final deposit pattern. The underlying mechanism for such a phenomenon could be attributed to the contact line dynamics of a sessile double droplet. We also observe heteroaggregation of the nanosilica-nanotitania interaction along a narrow interface which resulted in nanotitania particles clustering into isolated islands embedded into a matrix of nanosilica particles. Overall, this work elucidates the evaporation driven dynamics of a mixed colloidal system which displays both macroscopic as well as microscopic phenomena. Such a system could be used to generate ordered arrays of functional materials with engineered micro to nano-scale properties.

Thin films of different thicknesses in the range of 200-720 nm have been deposited on glass substrates at room temperature using thermal evaporation technique. The structural investigations revealed that the as-deposited films are amorphous in nature. The surface roughness of the films shows an increasing trend at higher thickness of the films. The surface roughness of the films shows an increasing trend at higher thickness of the films. Interference fringes in the transmission spectra of these films suggest that the films are fairly smooth and uniform. The optical absorption in Sb2Se3 film is described using indirect transition and the variation in band gaps is explained on the basis of defects and disorders in the chalcogenide systems. Raman spectrum confirms the increase of orderliness with film thickness. From the I-V characteristics, a memory type switching is observed whose threshold voltage increases with film thickness. Thin films of CuIn1-xAlxSe2 (CIAS) were grown on the flexible 10 micrometer thin stainless steel substrates, by dc co-sputtering from the elemental cathodes, followed by annealing with modified selenization. CuInAl alloyed precursor films were selenized both by noble gas assisted Se vapor transport in a tubular furnace and vacuum evaporation of Se in an evaporation chamber. CIAS thin films were optimized for better adhesion. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy were used to characterize the selenized films. The composition of CIAS films was varied by substituting In with Al in CuInSe2 (CIS) from 0 <= x <= 0.65 (x = Al/Al+In). Lattice parameters, average crystallite sizes, and compact density of the films, decreased when compared to CIS and (112) peak shifted to higher Bragg's angle, upon Al incorporation. The dislocation density and strain were found to increase with Al doping. Solar cells with SS/Mo/CIAS/CdS/iZnO: AZnO/Al configuration were fabricated and were tested for current-voltage characteristics for various `x' values, under Air Mass 1.5 Global one sun illumination. The best CIAS solar cell showed the efficiency of 6.8%, with x = 0.13, Eg = 1.17 eV, fill factor 45.04, and short circuit current density J(sc) 30 mA/cm(2).

Achieving control on the formation of different organization states of magnetic nanoparticles is crucial to harness their organization dependent physical properties in desired ways. In this study, three organization states of iron oxide nanoparticles (gamma-Fe2O3), defining as (i) assembly (ii) network aggregate and (iii) cluster, have been developed by simply changing the solvent evaporation conditions. All three systems have retained the same phase and polydispersity of primary particles. Magnetic measurements show that the partial alignment of the easy axes of the particles in the network system due to the stacking aggregation morphology can result in significant enhancement of the coercivity and remanence values, while the opposite is obtained for the cluster system due to the random orientation of easy axes. Partial alignment in the aggregate system also results in noticeable non -monotonic field dependence of ZFC peak temperature (TpeaB). The lowest value of the blocking temperature (TB) for the cluster system is related to the lowering of the effective anisotropy due to the strongest demagnetizing effect. FC (Field cooled) memory effect was observed to be decreasing with the increasing strength of dipolar interaction of organization states. Therefore, the stacking aggregation and the cluster formation are two interesting ways of magnetic nanoparticles organization for modulating collective magnetic properties significantly, which can have renewed application potentials from recording devices to biomedicine.
