Band sizes of southeastern Brazilian hummingbirds

Aluminum numbered bands have been used to mark Brazilian hummingbirds since 1993 to obtain biological data as well as ascertain movements and longevities. Bands should be made as narrow as possible by cutting close to the numbers because of the short length of the hummingbird tarsus. Different band lengths should be determined for different species.

The change in magnetic properties of Fe3Al compound due to substitution of Fe by Co

The magnetic moment using self-consistent spin-polarized energy band calculations of Fe3Al and Fe2CoAl Heusler phases are presented. These results are compared with the experimental values obtained from the magnetization curves of these materials. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Conjectures and theorems in the theory of entire functions

Motivated by the recent solution of Karlin's conjecture, properties of functions in the Laguerre-Polya class are investigated. The main result of this paper establishes new moment inequalities fur a class of entire functions represented by Fourier transforms. The paper concludes with several conjectures and open problems involving the Laguerre-Polya class and the Riemann xi -function.

Low-energy sector quantization of a massless scalar field outside a Reissner-Nordström black hole and static sources

We quantize the low-energy sector of a massless scalar field in Reissner-Nordström spacetime. This allows the analysis of processes involving soft scalar particles occurring outside charged black holes. In particular, we compute the response of a static scalar source interacting with Hawking radiation using the Unruh (and the Hartle-Hawking) vacuum. This response is compared with the one obtained when the source is uniformly accelerated in the usual vacuum of Minkowski spacetime with the same proper acceleration. We show that both responses are in general different in opposition to the result obtained when the Reissner-Nordström black hole is replaced by a Schwarzschild one. The conceptual relevance of this result is commented on. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Theory of constraints contributions to outbound logistics

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to systematically describe the key practical contributions of the theory of constraints (TOC) to outbound (distribution) logistics. Design/methodology/approach: Based on theoretical research, this paper presents the main practical aspects of the approach suggested by TOC to outbound logistics and discusses the assumptions upon which it is based. Findings: This paper corroborates the thesis defended by TOC, according to which the current ways of managing outbound logistics, based mainly on sales forecasts lead to difficulties in handling trade-offs between logistics (stock and transportation) costs and stock-out levels. Research limitations/implications: The reported research is of a theoretical nature. Practical implications: TOC offers a proposal that is complementary in many aspects and very distinguishable in others about the way some key processes and elements of supply chain management (SCM) are managed, especially outbound logistics. Originality/value: Considering the dearth of papers dealing with the conceptual articulation and organization of this subject, the paper contributes to systematize the knowledge currently available about the contributions of the TOC to outbound logistics, highlighting the practical implications of applying TOC to outbound logistics. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Arc-flash energy: The impact of fuse link manufacturers

The traditional operational and hazard control paradigm of an electrical installation has several issues pertaining to the diversity of equipment. A large maintenance inventory is a reason for concern for any manager, but the arc-flash hazard is a particularly new phenomenon, and the effects of equipment diversity on this phenomenon are even newer. The class of arc hazard can be simply increased by changing the fuse link or circuit breaker manufacturer. Management pressure to operate as well as nonstandard practices and installations are also partly responsible. The aim of this article is to take a typical situation in an industrial plant and to statistically simulate, by means of a dedicated software program, the fuse arc-flash interruption performance of various manufacturers. The purpose of this article is to obtain a more objective indication of the influence of different fuse link manufacturers on arc-flash incident energy. © 1975-2012 IEEE.

A Commentary on de Sousa′s towards an Integrative Theory of Consciousness

De Sousa′s comprehensive two-part review of a diversity of contemporary approaches to the study of consciousness is highly welcome. He makes us aware of a proliferation of theoretical and empirical approaches targeting a common theme, but diverging in many ways. He skilfully accomplishes a classification of kinds of approach, identification of the main representatives, their contributions, and respective limitations. However, he does not show how the desired integration could be accomplished. Besides summarising de Sousa′s efficient analytical work, I make critical comments and briefly report my contribution for the integration project.© MSM 2013.

The need of subsidy for the implementation of photovoltaic solar energy as supporting of decentralized electrical power generation in Brazil

The growing demand for electrical power and the limited capital invested to provide this power is forcing countries like Brazil to search for new alternatives for electrical power generation. The purpose of this paper is to present a technical and economic study on a 15 kW solar plant installed in an isolated community, highlighting the importance of the need for financial subsidy from the government. It evaluates the importance of parameters such as the annual interest rate, specific investment, the marginal cost of expanding the electrical power supply and the government subsidy on amortization time of capital invested. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.
