In this thesis we focus on the analysis and interpretation of time dependent deformations recorded through different geodetic methods. Firstly, we apply a variational Bayesian Independent Component Analysis (vbICA) technique to GPS daily displacement solutions, to separate the postseismic deformation that followed the mainshocks of the 2016-2017 Central Italy seismic sequence from the other, hydrological, deformation sources. By interpreting the signal associated with the postseismic relaxation, we model an afterslip distribution on the faults involved by the mainshocks consistent with the co-seismic models available in literature. We find evidences of aseismic slip on the Paganica fault, responsible for the Mw 6.1 2009 L’Aquila earthquake, highlighting the importance of aseismic slip and static stress transfer to properly model the recurrence of earthquakes on nearby fault segments. We infer a possible viscoelastic relaxation of the lower crust as a contributing mechanism to the postseismic displacements. We highlight the importance of a proper separation of the hydrological signals for an accurate assessment of the tectonic processes, especially in cases of mm-scale deformations. Contextually, we provide a physical explanation to the ICs associated with the observed hydrological processes. In the second part of the thesis, we focus on strain data from Gladwin Tensor Strainmeters, working on the instruments deployed in Taiwan. We develop a novel approach, completely data driven, to calibrate these strainmeters. We carry out a joint analysis of geodetic (strainmeters, GPS and GRACE products) and hydrological (rain gauges and piezometers) data sets, to characterize the hydrological signals in Southern Taiwan. Lastly, we apply the calibration approach here proposed to the strainmeters recently installed in Central Italy. We provide, as an example, the detection of a storm that hit the Umbria-Marche regions (Italy), demonstrating the potential of strainmeters in following the dynamics of deformation processes with limited spatio-temporal signature

The present Dissertation shows how recent statistical analysis tools and open datasets can be exploited to improve modelling accuracy in two distinct yet interconnected domains of flood hazard (FH) assessment. In the first Part, unsupervised artificial neural networks are employed as regional models for sub-daily rainfall extremes. The models aim to learn a robust relation to estimate locally the parameters of Gumbel distributions of extreme rainfall depths for any sub-daily duration (1-24h). The predictions depend on twenty morphoclimatic descriptors. A large study area in north-central Italy is adopted, where 2238 annual maximum series are available. Validation is performed over an independent set of 100 gauges. Our results show that multivariate ANNs may remarkably improve the estimation of percentiles relative to the benchmark approach from the literature, where Gumbel parameters depend on mean annual precipitation. Finally, we show that the very nature of the proposed ANN models makes them suitable for interpolating predicted sub-daily rainfall quantiles across space and time-aggregation intervals. In the second Part, decision trees are used to combine a selected blend of input geomorphic descriptors for predicting FH. Relative to existing DEM-based approaches, this method is innovative, as it relies on the combination of three characteristics: (1) simple multivariate models, (2) a set of exclusively DEM-based descriptors as input, and (3) an existing FH map as reference information. First, the methods are applied to northern Italy, represented with the MERIT DEM (∼90m resolution), and second, to the whole of Italy, represented with the EU-DEM (25m resolution). The results show that multivariate approaches may (a) significantly enhance flood-prone areas delineation relative to a selected univariate one, (b) provide accurate predictions of expected inundation depths, (c) produce encouraging results in extrapolation, (d) complete the information of imperfect reference maps, and (e) conveniently convert binary maps into continuous representation of FH.

In recent years, energy modernization has focused on smart engineering advancements. This entails designing complicated software and hardware for variable-voltage digital substations. A digital substation consists of electrical and auxiliary devices, control and monitoring devices, computers, and control software. Intelligent measurement systems use digital instrument transformers and IEC 61850-compliant information exchange protocols in digital substations. Digital instrument transformers used for real-time high-voltage measurements should combine advanced digital, measuring, information, and communication technologies. Digital instrument transformers should be cheap, small, light, and fire- and explosion-safe. These smaller and lighter transformers allow long-distance transmission of an optical signal that gauges direct or alternating current. Cost-prohibitive optical converters are a problem. To improve the tool's accuracy, amorphous alloys are used in the magnetic circuits and compensating feedback. Large-scale voltage converters can be made cheaper by using resistive, capacitive, or hybrid voltage dividers. In known electronic voltage transformers, the voltage divider output is generally on the low-voltage side, facilitating power supply organization. Combining current and voltage transformers reduces equipment size, installation, and maintenance costs. These two gadgets cost less together than individually. To increase commercial power metering accuracy, current and voltage converters should be included into digital instrument transformers so that simultaneous analogue-to-digital samples are obtained. Multichannel ADC microcircuits with synchronous conversion start allow natural parallel sample drawing. Digital instrument transformers are created adaptable to substation operating circumstances and environmental variables, especially ambient temperature. An embedded microprocessor auto-diagnoses and auto-calibrates the proposed digital instrument transformer.

In the context of perturbative quantum gravity, the first three Seeley-DeWitt coefficients represent the counterterms needed to renormalize the graviton one-loop effective action in $D=4$ dimensions. A standard procedure to compute them is by means of the traditional heat kernel method. However, these coefficients can be studied also from a first quantization perspective through the so-called $\mathcal{N} = 4$ spinning particle model. It relies on four supersymmetries on the worldline and a set of worldline gauge invariances. In the present work, a different worldline model, able to reproduce correctly the Seeley-DeWitt coefficients in arbitrary dimensions, is developed. After a covariant gauge-fixing procedure of the Einstein-Hilbert action with cosmological constant, a worldline representation of the kinetic operators identified by its quadratic approximation is found. This quantum mechanical representation can be presented in different but equivalent forms. Some of these different forms are discussed and their equivalence is verified by deriving the gauge invariant counterterms needed to renormalize quantum gravity with cosmological constant at one-loop.

Although being studied only for few years, Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) will become the predominant way of producing stainless-steel elements in a near-like future. The analysis and study of such elements has yet to be defined in a proper way, but the projects regarding this subject are innovating more and more thanks to the findings discovered by the latter. This thesis is focused on an initial stage on the analysis of mechanical and geometrical properties of such stainless-steel elements produced by MX3D laboratories in Amsterdam, and to perform a calibration of the design strength values by means of Annex D of Eurocode 0, which talks about the analysis of the semi-probabilistic safety factors, hence the definition of characteristic values. Moreover, after testing the stainless-steel specimens by means of strain gauges and after obtaining mechanical and geometrical properties, a statistical analysis of such properties and an evaluation of characteristic values is performed. After this, there is to execute the calibration of design strength values of WAAM inclined bars and intersections.
