Static and dynamic structure of liquid metals: Role of the different parts of the interaction potential

The influence of different parts of the interaction potential on the microscopic behavior of simple liquid metals is investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. The role of the soft-core repulsive, short-range attractive, and long-range oscillatory forces on the properties of liquid lithium close to the triple point is analyzed by comparing the results from simulations of identical systems but truncating the potential at different distances. Special attention is paid to dynamic collective properties such as the dynamic structure factors, transverse current correlation functions, and transport coefficients. It is observed that, in general, the effects of the short-range attractive forces are important. On the contrary, the influence of the oscillatory long-range interactions is considerably less, being the most pronounced for the dynamic structure factor at long wavelengths. The results of this work suggest that the influence of the attractive forces becomes less significant when temperature and density increase.

Effect of a transverse magnetic field on resonant magnetization tunneling in high-spin molecules

The recent observation of steps at regular intervals of magnetic field in the hysteresis loops of oriented crystals of the spin-10 molecular magnet Mn12O12(CH3COO)16(H2O)4 has been attributed to resonant tunneling between spin states. Here, we investigate the effect on the relaxation rate of applying the magnetic field at an angle with respect to the easy axis of magnetization. We find that the position of the resonances is independent of the transverse component of the field, and is determined solely by the longitudinal component. On the other hand, a transverse field significantly increases the relaxation rate, both on and off resonance. We discuss classical and quantum mechanical interpretations of this effect

Contribuciones de Einstein a la teoría cuántica (1905-1925)

El mito Einstein se ha formado básicamente en torno a sus teorías relativistas que, entre otras implicaciones, conducían a una original concepción del espacio-tiempo e incluso a una nueva forma de descripción del mundo físico. No obstante, sus contribuciones a la teoría cuántica -aunque no tan divulgadas- son de tal envergadura que por sí solas constituyen un aporte más que suficiente para que su autor ocupara un destacadísimo lugar entre los grandes creadores científicos de todos los tiempos. En el presente trabajo nos proponemos justificar tan categórica afirmación, empleando los medios que la historiografía moderna ofrece e incluyendo también resultados de algunas investigaciones propias.

Diffusive transport properties in monovalent and divalent metal-ion halide melts: A computer simulation study

Self- and cross-velocity correlation functions and related transport coefficients of molten salts are studied by molecular-dynamics simulation. Six representative systems are considered, i.e., NaCl and KCl alkali halides, CuCl and CuBr noble-metal halides, and SrCl2 and ZnCl2 divalent metal-ion halides. Computer simulation results are compared with experimental self-diffusion coefficients and electrical conductivities. Special attention is paid to dynamic cross correlations and their dependence on the Coulomb interactions as well as on the size and mass differences between anions and cations.

Correção do fluxo escolar: um balanço do programa acelera Brasil (1997-2000)

A correção do fluxo escolar consiste no desafio inicial a ser superado para que o Brasil possa oferecer educação de qualidade para todos. Dos 35,7 milhões de alunos matriculados no ensino fundamental, no início do ano 2000, quase 20 milhões estavam com dois ou mais anos de atraso escolar, e, dentre esses, 9 milhões já tinham mais de 15 anos de idade. Este artigo apresenta, descreve e analisa resultados do Programa Acelera Brasil, desenvolvido em 24 municípios durante os anos 1997 a 2000. O programa envolveu quase 60 mil alunos em mais de 2.400 classes e teve como objetivo regularizar o fluxo escolar através da implementação de programas de alfabetização, programas de aceleração de aprendizagem e outras estratégias que visam assegurar os avanços obtidos. Embora as metas iniciais do programa de aprovar os alunos para a 5ª série e regularizar o fluxo escolar num prazo de quatro anos não tenham sido plenamente atingidas, os resultados obtidos sugerem uma taxa de sucesso que varia entre 70% e 90%, nos diferentes municípios. Do ponto de vista econômico, foram economizados mais de 50 milhões de reais, o que significa uma taxa de retorno superior a 300% do investimento. Os resultados obtidos permitiram a implementação maciça do programa em outros estados e municípios do país, com resultados semelhantes. O artigo conclui com uma discussão a respeito das contribuições desse programa para a formulação de políticas públicas consistentes para a correção do fluxo escolar.

Iowa Criminal and Juvenile Justice Plan 1997

Pursuant to Iowa Code 216A, subchapter 9, CJJP is required to issue an annual report containing long-range system goals, special issue planning recommendations and research findings. CJJP’s 1997 response to its reporting requirement is different from past years. Rather than issuing one large document containing many separate reports, single-issue 1997 Update reports now are being made available based on reader interest and need. It is hoped this approach to disseminating CJJP research and planning reports will be more cost effective and more responsive to the planning activities and information needs of Iowa’s policy makers, justice system officials and others.

Sintonia oscilante: religião, moral e civismo no Brasil - 1931/1997

O artigo examina as relações observadas entre as disciplinas Ensino Religioso e Educação Moral e Cívica no ensino básico no Brasil. Analisa o Ensino Religioso particularmente no currículo das escolas públicas e a Educação Moral e Cívica no conjunto das escolas. Para isso, a legislação federal foi examinada como produto de alianças e conflitos entre o campo político e o campo religioso, naquilo que concerne ao campo educacional. O autor conclui que, no período estudado, ambas as disciplinas expressaram diferentes sentidos, em somatório ou em alternância, no jogo de forças entre o campo político e o campo religioso.
