A new mutual impedance - the receiving mutual impedance - between two normal-mode helical antennas is defined, measured, and theoretically calculated. The variations of the receiving mutual impedance with antenna separation, with frequency, and with excitation source direction are critically investigated. An application of the receiving mutual impedance in direction finding demonstrates its more accurate description of the mutual coupling effect than that using the conventional mutual impedance.

A technique is presented for the development of a high precision and resolution Mean Sea Surface (MSS) model. The model utilises Radar altimetric sea surface heights extracted from the geodetic phase of the ESA ERS-1 mission. The methodology uses a modified Le Traon et al. (1995) cubic-spline fit of dual ERS-1 and TOPEX/Poseidon crossovers for the minimisation of radial orbit error. The procedure then uses Fourier domain processing techniques for spectral optimal interpolation of the mean sea surface in order to reduce residual errors within the model. Additionally, a multi-satellite mean sea surface integration technique is investigated to supplement the first model with additional enhanced data from the GEOSAT geodetic mission. The methodology employs a novel technique that combines the Stokes' and Vening-Meinsz' transformations, again in the spectral domain. This allows the presentation of a new enhanced GEOSAT gravity anomaly field.

Here we present a compact tunable all-room-temperature frequency-doubling scheme, using a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) waveguide and a QD-ECDL. A broad wavelength tunability of the second harmonic generated light (SHG) in the spectral region between 567.7 and 629.1 nm was achieved, with maximum conversion efficiencies in range of 0.34%-7.9%. The maximum output power for the SHG light was 4.11 mW at 591.5 nm, achieved for 52 mW of launched pump power at 1183 nm, resulting in a conversion efficiency of 7.9%.

A compact picosecond all-room-temperature orange-to-red tunable laser source in the spectral region between 600 and 627 nm is demonstrated. The tunable radiation is obtained by second-harmonic generation in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) multimode waveguide using a tunable quantum-dot external-cavity mode-locked laser. The maximum second-harmonic output peak power of 3.91 mW at 613 nm is achieved for 85.94 mW of launched pump peak power at 1226 nm, resulting in conversion efficiency of 4.55%. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

We demonstrate a compact all-room-temperature picosecond laser source broadly tunable in the visible spectral region between 600 nm and 627 nm. The tunable radiation is obtained by frequency-doubling of a tunable quantum-dot external-cavity mode-locked laser in a periodically-poled KTP multimode waveguide. In this case, utilization of a significant difference in the effective refractive indices of the high- and low-order modes enables to match the period of poling in a very broad wavelength range. The maximum achieved second harmonic output peak power is 3.25 mW at 613 nm for 71.43 mW of launched pump peak power at 1226 nm, resulting in conversion efficiency of 4.55%. © 2013 Copyright SPIE.

Generation of stable dual and/or multiple longitudinal modes emitted from a single quantum dot (QD) laser diode (LD) over a broad wavelength range by using volume Bragg gratings (VBG's) in an external cavity setup is reported. The LD operates in both the ground and excited states and the gratings give a dual-mode separation around each emission peak of 5 nm, which is suitable as a continuous wave (CW) optical pump signal for a terahertz (THz) photomixer device. The setup also generates dual modes around both 1180m and 1260 nm simultaneously, giving four simultaneous narrow linewidth modes comprising two simultaneous difference frequency pump signals. A number of critical issues for dual-polarization single- and multi-band optical orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing (DPSB/ MB-OFDM) signals are analyzed in dispersion compensation fiber (DCF)-free long-haul links. For the first time, different DP crosstalk removal techniques are compared, the maximum transmission-reach is investigated, and the impact of subcarrier number and high-level modulation formats are explored thoroughly. It is shown, for a bit-error-rate (BER) of 10-3, 2000 km of quaternary phase-shift keying (QPSK) DP-MBOFDM transmission is feasible. At high launched optical powers (LOP), maximum-likelihood decoding can extend the LOP of 40 Gb/s QPSK DPSB- OFDM at 2000 km by 1.5 dB compared to zero-forcing. For a 100 Gb/s DP-MB-OFDM system, a high number of subcarriers contribute to improved BER but at the cost of digital signal processing computational complexity, whilst by adapting the cyclic prefix length the BER can be improved for a low number of subcarriers. In addition, when 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) is employed the digital-toanalogue/ analogue-to-digital converter (DAC/ADC) bandwidth is relaxed with a degraded BER; while the 'circular' 8QAM is slightly superior to its 'rectangular' form. Finally, the transmission of wavelength-division multiplexing DP-MB-OFDM and single-carrier DP-QPSK is experimentally compared for up to 500 Gb/s showing great potential and similar performance at 1000 km DCF-free G.652 line. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

A compact all-room-temperature CW 73-nm tunable laser source in the visible spectral region (574nm-647nm) has been demonstrated by frequency-doubling of a broadly-tunable InAs/GaAs quantum dot external-cavity diode laser in periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate waveguides with a maximum output power in excess of 12mW and a maximum conversion efficiency exceeding 10%. Three waveguides with different cross-sectional areas (4×4μm2, 3×5μm2 and 2x6μm2) were investigated. Introduction - Development of compact broadly tunable laser sources in the visible spectral region is currently very attractive area of research with applications ranging from photomedicine and biophotonics to confocal fluorescence microscopy and laser projection displays. In this respect, semiconductor lasers with their small size, high efficiency, reliability and low cost are very promising for realization of such sources by frequencydoubling of the infrared light in nonlinear crystal waveguides. Furthermore, the wide tunability offered by quantum-dot (QD) external-cavity diode lasers (ECDL), due to the temperature insensibility and broad gain bandwidth [1,2], is very promising for the development of tunable visible laser sources [3,4]. In this work we show a compact green-to-red tunable allroom-temperature CW laser source using a frequency-doubled InAs/GaAs QD-ECDL in periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal waveguides. This laser source generates frequency-doubled light over the 574nm-647nm wavelength range utilizing the significant difference in the effective refractive indices of high-order and low-order modes in multimode waveguides [3]. Experimental results - Experimental setup used in this work was similar to that described in [3] and consisted of a QD gain chip in the quasiLittrow configuration and a PPKTP waveguide. Coarse wavelength tuning of the QD-ECDL between 1140 nm and 1300 nm at 20°C was possible for pump current of 1.5 A. The laser output was coupled into the PPKTP waveguide using an AR-coated 40x aspheric lens (NA ~ 0.55). The PPKTP frequency-doubling crystal (not AR coated) used in our work was 18 mm in length and was periodically poled for SHG (with the poling period of ~ 11.574 11m). The crystal contained 3 different waveguides with cross-sectional areas of ~ 4x4 11m2, 3x5 11m2 and 2x6 11m2. Both the pump laser and the PPKTP crystal were operating at room temperature. The waveguides with cross-sectional areas of 4x411m2, 3x511m2 and 2x611m2 demonstrated the tunability in the wavelength ranges of 577nm - 647nm, 576nm -643nm and 574nm - 641nm, respectively, with a maximum output power of 12.04mW at 606 nm Conclusion - We demonstrated a compact all-room-temperature broadlytunable laser source operating in the visible spectral region between 574nm and 647nm. This laser source is based on second harmonic generation in PPKTP waveguides with different cross-sectional areas using an InAs/GaAs QD-ECDL References [I] E.U. Rafailov, M.A. Cataluna, and W. This article proposes a frequency agile antenna whose operating frequency band can be switched. The design is based on a Vivaldi antenna. High-performance radio-frequency microelectromechanical system (RF-MEMS) switches are used to realize the 2.7 GHz and 3.9 GHz band switching. The low band starts from 2.33 GHz and works until 3.02 GHz and the high band ranges from 3.29 GHz up to 4.58 GHz. The average gains of the antenna at the low and high bands are 10.9 and 12.5 dBi, respectively. This high-gain frequency reconfigurable antenna could replace several narrowband antennas for reducing costs and space to support multiple communication systems, while maintaining good performance.

Abstract—We report an actively mode-locked tunable dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser that uses parallel amplifiers in order to minimize gain cross-saturation effects. We obtain extremely stable, room-temperature dual-wavelength operation at a modulator drive frequency of 1035.38 MHz (corresponding pulsewidths of 115 and 130 ps). Furthermore, we can independently tune the power and wavelength of each lasing output signal without affecting overall output stability. In particular, we achieve a wavelength separation as narrow as 0.3 nm.

A compact high-power yellow-green continuous wave (CW) laser source based on second-harmonic generation (SHG) in a 5% MgO doped periodically poled congruent lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide crystal pumped by a quantum-dot fiber Bragg grating (QD-FBG) laser diode is demonstrated. A frequency-doubled power of 90.11 mW at the wavelength of 560.68 nm with a conversion efficiency of 52.4% is reported. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the highest output power and conversion efficiency achieved to date in this spectral region from a diode-pumped PPLN waveguide crystal, which could prove extremely valuable for the deployment of such a source in a wide range of biomedical applications.

Bio-impedance analysis (BIA) provides a rapid, non-invasive technique for body composition estimation. BIA offers a convenient alternative to standard techniques such as MRI, CT scan or DEXA scan for selected types of body composition analysis. The accuracy of BIA is limited because it is an indirect method of composition analysis. It relies on linear relationships between measured impedance and morphological parameters such as height and weight to derive estimates. To overcome these underlying limitations of BIA, a multi-frequency segmental bio-impedance device was constructed through a series of iterative enhancements and improvements of existing BIA instrumentation. Key features of the design included an easy to construct current-source and compact PCB design. The final device was trialled with 22 human volunteers and measured impedance was compared against body composition estimates obtained by DEXA scan. This enabled the development of newer techniques to make BIA predictions. To add a ‘visual aspect’ to BIA, volunteers were scanned in 3D using an inexpensive scattered light gadget (Xbox Kinect controller) and 3D volumes of their limbs were compared with BIA measurements to further improve BIA predictions. A three-stage digital filtering scheme was also implemented to enable extraction of heart-rate data from recorded bio-electrical signals. Additionally modifications have been introduced to measure change in bio-impedance with motion, this could be adapted to further improve accuracy and veracity for limb composition analysis. The findings in this thesis aim to give new direction to the prediction of body composition using BIA. The design development and refinement applied to BIA in this research programme suggest new opportunities to enhance the accuracy and clinical utility of BIA for the prediction of body composition analysis. In particular, the use of bio-impedance to predict limb volumes which would provide an additional metric for body composition measurement and help distinguish between fat and muscle content.

Dual-polarization multi-band orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DP-MB-OFDM) signals are optimized at data rates up to 500 Gb/s in dispersion compensation fiber (DCF)-free long-haul links. We compare different polarization crosstalk compensation techniques and explore the DP-MB-OFDM transmission distance limitations. In addition, the impact of the OFDM subcarrier number and high-level modulation format on the transmission performance are also investigated. Finally, a comparison is made between DP-MB-OFDM and the industrial solution of single-carrier DP quaternary phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) at 1000 km.
