The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by methane in the presence of excess oxygen was studied on a Zn-Co/HZSM-5 catalyst. It was found that the addition of Zn could improve effectively the selectivity of methane towards NOx reduction. When prepared by a coimpregnation method, the Zn-Co/HZSM-5 catalyst showed much higher catalytic activity than the two catalysts of a Zn/Co/HZSM-5 and Co/Zn/HZSM-5 prepared by the successive impregnation method. It is considered that there exists a cooperative effect among the Zn, Co and zeolite, which enhances the reduction of NO to NO2 reaction and the activation of methane. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Three Polypropylene/Poly(ethylene-co-propylene) (PP/EPR) in-reactor alloys produced by a two-stage slurry/gas polymerization had different ethylene contents and mechanical properties, which were achieved by controlling the copolymerization time. The three alloys were fractionated into five fractions via temperature rising dissolution fractionation (TRDF), respectively. The chain structures of the whole samples and their fractions were analyzed using high-temperature gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (C-13 NMR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. These three in-reactor alloys mainly contained four portions: ethylenepropylene random copolymer (EPR), ethylene-propylene (EP) segmented and block copolymers, and propylene homopolymer. The increased copolymerization time caused the increased ethylene content of the sample. The weight percent of EPR, EP segmented and block copolymer also became higher.

BACKGROUND: Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) has attracted wide interest as a biodegradable polymer. However, its use is restricted in certain applications due to its low melting point.RESULTS: PBAT was treated using gamma-radiation. The radiation features were analyzed using Soxhlet extraction, and the ratio of chain scission and crosslinking and gelation dose were determined using the classical Charlesby-Pinner equation. The results showed that PBAT is a radiation-crosslinkable polymer. The degree of crosslinking increased with increasing radiation dose; the relation between sol fraction and dose followed the Charlesby-Pinner equation. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses showed that the melting temperature (T-m) and the heat of fusion (Delta H-m) of PBAT exhibited almost no change in the first scan. The second scan, however, showed a decrease in T-m and Delta H-m. The glass transition temperature of irradiated PBAT increased with increasing radiation dose.

Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) thermoluminescence (TL) phosphor was synthesized by a high temperature solid state reaction and the effect of Li+, Bi3+, Gd3+ or Ti4+ as a codopant on TL of Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) : Dy was investigated. The results show that Li+ as a codopant improves the emission intensity of high temperature TL peak of Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) : Dy phosphor whereas the addition of Bi3+, Gd3+ or Ti3+ leads to the decrease of TL intensity. The TL emission bands of Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) : Dy phosphors with Li+, Bi3+, Gd3+ or Ti4+ as a codopant are situated at 480, 579, 662 and 755 nm, which were attributed to the characteristic F-4(9/2)-> H-6(15/2), F-4(9/2)-> H-6(13/2), F-4(9/2)-> H-6(11/2) and F-4(9/2)-> H-6(9/2) transitions of Dy3+ ion, consistent with the emission of Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) : Dy phosphors. The kinetics parameters of 234 degrees C TL peak of Sr2Mg(BO3)(2) Dy-0.04(3+), (Li-0.04(+)) phosphor with the values of trap depth E=1.1 eV, frequency factor s=6.3 x 10(9) s(-1) were estimated by a peak shape method, which obey the second order kinetics.

The crystallization behavior of two kinds of commercial poly(propylene-co-ethylene)s (PPE1, PPE2) with similar average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, isotacticity and copolymerized ethylene unit content and their fractions was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) techniques. The results indicate that the PPE1 isothermally crystallized films possess thicker and less cross-hatched lamellar structure than those of the PPE2. As for the fractionated samples, the thin films of low temperature (less than or equal to 90 degreesC) fractions (PPE1-80, PPE2-80) of both PPE1 and PPE2 exhibit similar crystallization behavior, while for the high temperature ( greater than or equal to 95 degreesC) fractions (PPE1-108, PPE2-108), the crystalline morphology has marked differences. Compared with PPE2-108, the PPE1-108 isothermally crystallized thin films possess thicker lamellae and less crosshatched lamellar structure, while for the fibrous crystal number, the former is less than that of the latter. The main reason to create the crystallization behavior differences between the two PPEs and their fractions is due to the effect of molecular chain structure, i.e. the different distribution of copolymerized ethylene unit in polypropylene chains.

The effect of the gamma-form crystal on the thermal fractionation of a commercial poly(propylene-co-ethylene) (PPE) has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques. Two thermal fractionation techniques, stepwise isothermal crystallization (SIC) and successive self-nucleation and annealing (SSA), have been used to characterize the molecular heterogeneity of the PPE. The results indicate that the SSA technique possesses a stronger fractionation ability than that of the SIC technique. The heating scan of the SSA fractionated sample exhibits 12 endothermic peaks, whereas the scan of the SIC fractionated sample only shows eight melting peaks. The WAXD observations of the fractionated PPE samples prove that the content of the gamma-form crystals formed during the thermal treatment of the SIC technique is much higher than that of the SSA treatment. The former is 57.4%, whereas the later is 12.6%. The effect of they-form crystals on thermal fractionation ability is discussed.

The results obtained for poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) after Co-60 gamma-ray irradiation, studied by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM), revealed that the degree of crystallinity, melting temperature and enthalpy decreased with increasing irradiation dose, but that the crystal structure of PBS did not vary when compared to non-irradiated PBS. By using Scherrer equation, small changes occurred in the crystal sizes of L-020, L-110 and L-111. The spherulitic morphology of PBS was strongly dependent on irradiation dose and changed significantly at higher irradiation dosages. The crystallization kinetics of PBS indicated that the Avrami exponent (n) for irradiated PBS was reduced to 2.3, when compared to non-irradiated PBS (3.3).

The crystallization and melting behavior of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate-co-beta-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and a 30/70 (w/w) PHBV/poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) blend was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The transesterification reaction between PHBV and PPC was detected in the melt-blending process. The interaction between the two macromolecules was confirmed by means of FTIR analysis. During the crystallization process from the melt, the crystallization temperature of the PHBV/PPC blend decreased about 8 degreesC, the melting temperature was depressed by 4 degreesC, and the degree of crystallinity of PHBV in the blend decreased about 9.4%; this was calculated through a comparison of the DSC heating traces for the blend and pure PHBV. These results indicated that imperfect crystals of formed, crystallization was inhibited, and the crystallization ability of PHBV was weakened in the blend. The equilibrium melting temperatures of PHBV and the 30/70 PHBV/PPC blend isothermally crystallized were 187.1 and 179 degreesC, respectively.
