1. We tested three pesticides used for field manipulations of herbivory for direct phytoactive effects on the germination and growth of 14 herbaceous plant species selected to provide a range of life-history strategies and functional groups. 2. We report three companion experiments: (A) Two insecticides, chlorpyrifos (granular soil insecticide) and dimethoate (foliar spray), were applied in fully-factorial combination to pot-germinated individuals of 12 species. (B) The same fully-factorial design was used to test for direct effects on the germination of four herbaceous legumes. (C) The molluscicide, metaldehyde, was tested for direct effects on the germination and growth of six plant species. 3. The insecticides had few significant effects on growth and germination. Dimethoate acted only on growth stimulating Anisantha sterilis, Sonchus asper and Stellaria graminea. In contrast, chlorpyrifos acted on germination increasing the germination of Trifolium dubium and Trifolium pratense. There was also a significant interactive effect of chlorpyrifos and dimethoate on the germination of T pratense. However, all. effects were relatively small in magnitude and explanatory power. The molluscicide had no significant effect on plant germination or growth. 4. The small number and size of direct effects of the pesticides on plant performance is encouraging for the use of these pesticides in manipulative experiments on herbivory, especially for the molluscicide. However, a smatt number of direct (positive) effects of the insecticides on some plant species need to be taken into account when interpreting field manipulations of herbivory with these compounds, and emphasises the importance of conducting tests for direct phyto-active effects. P-glycoproteins (p-gps) are ubiquitous membrane proteins from the ABC (ATP-binding cassette) family. They have been found in many animals, bacteria, plants and fungi and are extremely important in regulating a wide range of xenobiotics including pesticides. P-gps have been linked to xenobiotic resistance, most famously in resistance to cancer drug treatments. Their wide substrate range has led to what is known as "multidrug resistance", where resistance developed to one type of xenobiotic gives resistance to a different classes of xenobiotic. P-gps are a major contributor to drug resistance in mammalian tumours and infections of protozoan parasites such as Plasmodium and Leishmania. There is a growing body of literature suggesting that p-gps, and other ABC proteins, are important in regulating pesticide toxicity and represent potential control failure through the development of pesticide resistance, in both agricultural and medical pests. At the same time, aspects of their biochemistry offer new hope in pest control, in particular in furthering our understanding of toxicity and offering insights into how we can improve control without recourse to new chemical discovery. It is generally acknowledged that population-level assessments provide,I better measure of response to toxicants than assessments of individual-level effects. population-level assessments generally require the use of models to integrate potentially complex data about the effects of toxicants on life-history traits, and to provide a relevant measure of ecological impact. Building on excellent earlier reviews we here briefly outline the modelling options in population-level risk assessment. Modelling is used to calculate population endpoints from available data, which is often about Individual life histories, the ways that individuals interact with each other, the environment and other species, and the ways individuals are affected by pesticides. As population endpoints, we recommend the use of population abundance, population growth rate, and the chance of population persistence. We recommend two types of model: simple life-history models distinguishing two life-history stages, juveniles and adults; and spatially-explicit individual-based landscape models. Life-history models are very quick to set up and run, and they provide a great deal or insight. At the other extreme, individual-based landscape models provide the greatest verisimilitude, albeit at the cost of greatly increased complexity. We conclude with a discussion of the cations of the severe problems of parameterising models.

We report herein, the first generation of unsymmetrical ketone-derived chiral stabilized azomethine ylides. Intrairiolecular and intermolecular cycloaddition strategies have been utilized to synthesize both an enantiornerically pure bicyclic proline derivative and an enantionierically pure beta-hydroxy-alpha-amino acid.

The selective reduction of one of the three carboxyl groups of two chiral citric acid derivatives to the corresponding aldehydes, under Rosenmund conditions, are reported together with the application of these aldehydes to the syntheses of the ester side chains of some potently antileukemic Cephalotaxus alkaloids e.g. anhydroharringtonine.

Intertwining triple helical nanofibers with an overall handedness have been formed from self-assembling chiral benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamides 1, 2 and 3, whereas the achiralbenzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide 4 upon self-association gives rise to straight nanofibers without any twist and transmission electron microscopy images of chiral compounds clearly demonstrate that the handedness of the triple helical nanofibers can be reversed by using the enantiomeric benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide building blocks.

The chiral stabilised azomethine ylide formed from condensation of the dimethyl acetal of acetone with (5S)-5-phenylmorpholinone undergoes stereoselective exo-cycloaddition reactions with a range of doubly and singly activated dipolarophiles when generated in the presence of excess (MgBr2OEt2)-O-.. The cycloadducts can be degraded to yield enantiomerically pure proline derivatives.

We report herein the first synthesis of chiral derivatives possessing the 1,4-thiazinone core. As predicted, the thiolactone is more susceptible to nucleophilic attack than the equivalent lactone system.

The preparation of enantiomerically pure threo-beta-amino-alpha-hydroxy acids via 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of imine dipolarophiles with the chiral isomunchnone derived from (5R)-5-phenylmorpholin-3-one 1 is described. The cycloadducts were obtained with excellent diastereofacial- and exo-selectivity. Subsequent hydrolysis and chemoselective exocyclic amide cleavage afforded the threo-beta-amino-alpha-hydroxy acids with recovery of the initial chiral auxiliary. (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Intrinsically chiral metal and mineral surfaces show enantioselective behaviour without modifiers. Examples are artificial high-Miller-index surfaces of metal single crystals with cubic bulk lattice symmetry, which have no mirror planes and are therefore chiral, or surfaces of naturally occurring crystallites of some common minerals, such as alpha-quartz or calcite. Recent findings with regards to the surface geometry, reactivity and thermal stability of intrinsically chiral surfaces are discussed. A number of enantioselective effects have been reported in connection with the adsorption of small chiral molecules (e.g. alanine, cysteine) on intrinsically chiral surfaces under well-defined conditions. From a combination of experimental surface science techniques and theoretical ab initio model calculations it emerges that these effects are due to a combination of attractive and repulsive adsorbate-substrate and inter-adsorbate interactions.

The terpenoid chiral selectors dehydroabietic acid, 12,14-dinitrodehydroabietic acid and friedelin have been covalently linked to silica gel yielding three chiral stationary phases CSP 1, CSP 2 and CSP 3, respectively. The enantiodiscriminating capability of each one of these phases was evaluated by HPLC with four families of chiral aromatic compounds composed of alcohols, amines, phenylalanine and tryptophan amino acid derivatives and beta-lactams. The CSP 3 phase, containing a selector with a large friedelane backbone is particularly suitable for resolving free alcohols and their derivatives bearing fluorine substituents, while CSP 2 with a dehydroabietic architecture is the only phase that efficiently discriminates 1, 1'-binaphthol atropisomers. CSP 3 also gives efficient resolution of the free amines. All three phases resolve well the racemates of N-trifluoracetyl and N-3,5-dinitrobenzoyl phenylalanine amino acid ester derivatives. Good enantioseparation of beta-lactams and N-benzoyl tryptophan amino acid derivatives was achieved on CSP 1. In order to understand the structural factors that govern the chiral molecular recognition ability of these phases, molecular dynamics simulations were carried out in the gas phase with binary diastereomeric complexes formed by the selectors of CSP 1 and CSP 2 and several amino acid derivatives. Decomposition of molecular mechanics energies shows that van der Waals interactions dominate the formation of the diastereomeric transient complexes while the electrostatic binding interactions are primarily responsible for the enantioselective binding of the (R)- and (S)-analytes. Analysis of the hydrogen bonds shows that electrostatic interactions are mainly associated with the formation of N-(HO)-O-...=C enantio selective hydrogen bonds between the amide binding sites from the selectors and the carbonyl groups of the analytes. The role of mobile phase polarity, a mixture of n-hexane and propan-2-ol in different ratios, was also evaluated through molecular dynamics simulations in explicit solvent. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of hyperbranched macromolecular architectures (dendrimers) upon chirality has received significant attention in recent years in the light of the proposal of amplification of chirality. In particular, several studies have been carried out on the chiroptical properties of dendrimers that contain a chiral core and achiral branches in order to determine if the chirality of the central core can be transmitted to the distal. region of the macromolecule. In addition to interest of a pure academic nature, the presence of such chiral conformational order would be extremely useful in the development of asymmetric catalysts. In this paper, a novel class of chiral dendrimers is described - these perfect hyperbranched macromolecules have been prepared by a convergent route by the coupling of a chiral central core based upon tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and poly(aromatic amide ester) dendritic branches. The chiral properties of these dendrimers have been investigated by detailed optical rotation studies and circular dichroism analysis; the results of these studies are described herein. The aza-Darzens ('ADZ') reactions of N-diphenylphosphinyl ('N-Dpp') imines with chiral enolates derived from N-bromoacetyl 2S-2,10-camphorsultam proceed in generally good yield to give N-diphenylphosphinyl aziridinoyl sultams. However, the stereoselectivity of the reaction is dependent upon the structure of the imine substituent: when the chiral enolate was reacted with arylimines substituted in the ortho-position, mixtures of cis- and trans-2'R,3'R-aziridines were obtained, often with a complete selectivity in favour of the trans-isomer.
