The structural determinants of myotoxicity of bothropstoxin-I (BthTX-I), a Lys49 phospholipase A(2) from Bothrops jararacussu venom, were studied by measuring the resting membrane potential in the mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparation. This method proved to be around 100-fold more sensitive than the creatine kinase release assay, and was used to evaluate a total of 31 site-directed BthTX-I alanine scanning mutants. Mutants that reduced the resting membrane potential were located in a surface patch defined by residues in the C-terminal loop (residues 115-129), positions 37-39 in the membrane interfacial recognition surface (Y46 and K54), and residue K93. These results expand the known structural determinants of the biological activity as evaluated by previous creatine kinase release experiments. Furthermore, a strong correlation is observed between the structural determinants of sarcolemma depolarization and calcium-independent disruption of liposome membranes, suggesting that a common mechanism of action underlies the permeabilization of the biological and model membranes. Bothropstoxin-I (BthTx-I) is a Lys49-PLA(2) from the venom of the snake Bothrops jararacussu, which permeabilizes biological and artificial membranes by a mechanism independent of lipid hydrolysis. This mechanism has been investigated by studying the interaction of nine single tryptophan BthTx-I mutants with negatively charged phospholipid membranes. Changes in the solvent exposure of the tryptophan in each mutant were evaluated comparing the rate of chemical modification (k(mod)) by bromosuccinamide with the maximum intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence emission wavelength (lambda(max)) in buffer and in the presence of 10% DMPA/90% DPPC liposomes. No changes in lambda(max). were observed, whereas k(mod) values for tryptophans at positions 7, 10, 31 and 125 were significantly reduced in the presence of lipids, suggesting that bound phospholipid decreases solvent accessibility at these positions. Since the half-lives of the fluorescence and chemical modification effects differ by at least six orders of magnitude, these results suggest that the bound phospholipid may interact with multiple locations on the protein surface over micro- to millisecond timescales. Bothropstoxin-I (BthTx-I), a Lys49-PLA(2) from Bothrops jararacussu venom, permeabilizes membranes by a non-hydrolytic Ca(2+)-independent mechanism. The BthTx-I showed activity against liposomes including 10% and 50% negatively charged lipids at pH 7.0, but not at pH 5.0. Nevertheless, ultracentrifugation and FRET demonstrated that at pH 5.0 the BthTx-I is bound to 50% negatively charged membranes. ANS binding identified a non-native monomeric conformation at pH 5.0, suggesting that tertiary structure alterations result in activity loss of the BthTx-I at low pH. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Bothropstoxin-I (BthTx-I) is a homodimerie Lys49-PLA(2) from the venom of the snake Bothrops jararacussu, which lacks hydrolytic activity against phospholipid substrates, yet permeabilizes membranes by a Ca2+- independent mechanism. The interaction of the BthTx-I with model membranes has been studied by intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence emission (ITFE) spectroscopy. Nine separate mutants have been created each with a unique tryptophan residue located at a different position in the interfacial recognition site (IRS) of the protein. The rapid and efficient Ca2+-independent membrane damage against unilamellar liposomes composed of DPPC/DMPA in a 9:1 molar ratio was unaffected by these substitutions. Binding studies revealed low protein affinity for these liposomes and no changes were observed in the ITFE properties. In contrast, the binding of all mutants to DPPC/DMPA liposomes in a 1:1 molar ratio was stronger, and was correlated with altered ITFE properties. The blue-shifted emission spectra and increased emission intensity of mutants at positions 31, 67 and 115-117 in the interface recognition surface of the protein suggest these regions are partially inserted into the membrane. These results are consistent with a model for the Ca2+-independent membrane damaging mechanism that involves a transient interaction of the protein with the outer phospholipid leaflet of the target membrane. INTRODUÇÃO: A malária é uma doença endêmica na Amazônia Legal Brasileira, apresentando riscos diferentes para cada região. O Município de Cantá, no Estado de Roraima, apresentou para todo o período estudado, um dos maiores índices parasitários anuais do Brasil, com valor sempre maior que 50. O presente estudo visa à utilização de uma rede neural artificial para previsão da incidência da malária nesse município, a fim de auxiliar os coordenadores de saúde no planejamento e gestão dos recursos. MÉTODOS: Os dados foram coletados no site do Ministério da Saúde, SIVEP - Malária entre 2003 e 2009. Estruturou-se uma rede neural artificial com três neurônios na camada de entrada, duas camadas intermediárias e uma camada de saída com um neurônio. A função de ativação foi à sigmoide. No treinamento, utilizou-se o método backpropagation, com taxa de aprendizado de 0,05 e momentum 0,01. O critério de parada foi atingir 20.000 ciclos ou uma meta de 0,001. Os dados de 2003 a 2008 foram utilizados para treinamento e validação. Comparam-se os resultados com os de um modelo de regressão logística. RESULTADOS: Os resultados para todos os períodos previstos mostraram-se que as redes neurais artificiais obtiveram um menor erro quadrático médio e erro absoluto quando comparado com o modelo de regressão para o ano de 2009. CONCLUSÕES: A rede neural artificial se mostrou adequada para um sistema de previsão de malária no município estudado, determinando com pequenos erros absolutos os valores preditivos, quando comparados ao modelo de regressão logística e aos valores reais.

Malaria has still been one of the most important endemic diseases in the Amazonian region. This study presents the impact of human settlements on the structure of Anopheles population. Diversity, abundance, richness and distribution of the genus Anopheles were observed in two areas with different levels of human settlement in the Cantá city, Roraima State, Northern Brazil. The influence of the dry and rainy seasons on mosquito populations was also observed. Mosquito captures were performed between 6:00 and 10:00 pm during the dry (February and November) and rainy (May and August) seasons at four different sites of each area. Among the 11 species of Anopheles identified through the adults' characteristics, An. albitarsis s.l. (45.5%) and An. darlingi (19.2%) were the most abundant in the more intensively anthropized area while An. triannulatus (19.2%) was more common in the less modified area. Other species found were An. nuneztovari (10.9%), An. oswaldoi (2.0%), An. evansae (1.7%), An. brasiliensis (0.6%), An. intermedius (0.3%), An. mediopunctatus (0.5%), An. periassui (0.08%) and An. argyritarsis (0.04%). The highest mosquitoes' population density was observed in May and the lowest one was observed in February and November. These results demonstrate the existence of a high diversity of anophelines in the study areas, showing that anthropic changes in the environment and climate variability affect both the population density and relative abundance of these vectors.

O presente trabalho objetivou estudar o desempenho das espécies castanha-do-brasil (Bertholetia excelsa) e cupiúba (Goupia glabra) e o ajuste de uma função de crescimento e uma equação para estimar o diâmetro de copa em um modelo de sistema agroflorestal - SAF implantado em 1995 no Campo Experimental Confiança, Cantá, Estado de Roraima. Foram medidas 71 árvores de castanheira e 50 de cupiúbas totalizando 121 árvores, sendo tomados o CAP (circunferência a 1,30 m do solo), altura total, altura de inserção da copa, diâmetro da copa e dados qualitativos como sobrevivência, qualidade do fuste, bifurcações e aspectos fitossanitários como doenças ou pragas. Das 71 árvores de castanheira avaliadas 20 (27,8%) produziram frutos. A cupiúba apresentou alta porcentagem de indivíduos com bifurcação (cerca de 87,5%). A análise estatística indicou a função de Backman como a de melhor ajuste para as espécies observadas e com base nas equações construídas para estimar o diâmetro da copa em função do DAP pode-se fazer inferências sobre o espaço vital necessário para atingir uma determinada dimensão. Ambas as espécies apresentaram potencial silvicultural para recuperação de áreas alteradas em sistemas agroflorestais ou plantios homogêneos.

Despite the huge increase in processor and interprocessor network performace, many computational problems remain unsolved due to lack of some critical resources such as floating point sustained performance, memory bandwidth, etc... Examples of these problems are found in areas of climate research, biology, astrophysics, high energy physics (montecarlo simulations) and artificial intelligence, among others. For some of these problems, computing resources of a single supercomputing facility can be 1 or 2 orders of magnitude apart from the resources needed to solve some them. Supercomputer centers have to face an increasing demand on processing performance, with the direct consequence of an increasing number of processors and systems, resulting in a more difficult administration of HPC resources and the need for more physical space, higher electrical power consumption and improved air conditioning, among other problems. Some of the previous problems can´t be easily solved, so grid computing, intended as a technology enabling the addition and consolidation of computing power, can help in solving large scale supercomputing problems. In this document, we describe how 2 supercomputing facilities in Spain joined their resources to solve a problem of this kind. The objectives of this experience were, among others, to demonstrate that such a cooperation can enable the solution of bigger dimension problems and to measure the efficiency that could be achieved. In this document we show some preliminary results of this experience and to what extend these objectives were achieved.

El present projecte ha estat desenvolupat entre l’octubre de 2006 i el febrer de 2007 per un equip de llicenciades en Ciències Ambientals per la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. L’objecte d’estudi han estat les bordes, construccions agro-ramaderes utilitzades tradicionalment per a emmagatzemar l’herba i estabular-hi el bestiar. L’àmbit d’estudi seleccionat ha estat el Bosc de Virós, contingut dins el municipi d’Alins, a la comarca del Pallars Sobirà, Catalunya. Part de la superfície estudiada es troba sota la protecció del Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu. Per a dur a terme aquest estudi, s’ha desenvolupat una metodologia d’estudi de bordes amb dues vessants diferenciades que requereixen de tècniques metodològiques específiques. La vessant tècnica d’aquestes construccions s’ha materialitzat en un inventari de bordes, desenvolupat a partir de dades obtingudes durant l’observació al camp. La vessant etnològica s’ha obtingut a través de la realització d’entrevistes als propietaris, usuaris i gestors de la zona. A partir de l’anàlisi dels resultats, s’ha detectat una pèrdua de la funció tradicional d’aquestes construccions, derivant a una diversificació dels usos i un elevat grau d’abandonament d’aquestes. La diagnosi de l’estat d’aquests edificis i la seva influència sobre l’entorn és que els nous usos desenvolupats generen pressions sobre el medi i que el desús implica la degradació de l’estructura, amb la conseqüent pèrdua de patrimoni.

Moral values infuence individual behavior and social interactions. A specially signif- cant instance is the case of moral values concerning work e¤ort. Individuals determine what they take to be proper behaviour and judge the others, and themselves, accordingly. They increase their esteem -and self-esteem- for those who perform in excess of the standard and decrease their esteem for those who work less. These changes in self-esteem result from the self-regulatory emotions of guilt or pride extensively studied in Social Psychology. We examine the interactions between sentiments, individual behaviour and the social contract in a model of rational voting over redistribution where individual self-esteem and relative es-teem for others are endogenously determined. Individuals di¤er in their productivities. The desired extent of redistribution depends both on individual income and on individual attitudes toward others. We characterize the politico-economic equilibria in which sentiments, labor supply and redistribution are simultaneously determined. The model has two types of equilibria. In "cohesive" equilibria, all individuals conform to the standard of proper behav- iour, income inequality is low and social esteem is not biased toward any particular type. Under these conditions equilibrium redistribution increases in response to larger inequality. In a "clustered" equilibrium skilled workers work above the mean while unskilled workers work below. In such an equilibrium, income inequality is large and sentiments are biased in favor of the industrious. As inequality increases, this bias may eventually overtake the egoistic demand for greater taxation and equilibrium redistribution decreases. The type of equilibrium that emerges crucially depends on inequality. We contrast the predictions of the model with data on inequality, redistribution, work values and attitudes toward work and toward the poor for a set of OECD countries.

Aquest treball s'emmarca dins un projecte que planteja la incorporació de les audicions de músiques del món a les aules d’infantil i primària. Aquest projecte consta de diferents fases; la que aquí s’exposa comença situant el concepte de músiques del món i l’aportació que comporta la seva inclusió en el currículum, es presenta l’elaboració d'una selecció d'obres juntament amb el procés que ha comportat -es parteix de 528 peces, s'amplia amb 106 a la tercera etapa del procés, per arribar a una selecció final de 19 audicions- i es defineixen els criteris que s'han anat delimitant al llarg del procés per fer aquesta selecció: vivencials, musicals, geogràfics i didàctics

Text de la ponència presentada pel doctor Chris Kennett al “Foro Europeo: Cultura, Deporte y Proximidad” organitzat per la Diputación Provincial de Almería i celebrat a Almeria el 5 de maig de 2005. El text examina els conceptes clau que comprèn el discurs polític social relacionat amb la immigració i com es relacionen aquests conceptes amb l’esport. Es té en compte el paper potencial que juga l’esport en la integració dels immigrants i els riscs dels esports com a força potencialment divisiva, sobretot pel que fa al racisme. Aquesta discussió porta a considerar la necessitat de diàleg intercultural a través de l’esport per tal de contribuir a aconseguir una integració sostenible dels grups immigrants. Per tal d’assolir aquest objectiu, cal fer una recerca sobre les necessitats dels grups immigrants, ja que és una fase clau en el desenvolupament de la política de l’esport.

El present treball pretén avaluar l’impacte de les activitats agràries sobre les aigües subterrànies, al Baix Empordà. La ramaderia intensiva genera uns residus que l’agricultura no és capaç d’assumir. Els excedents generats s’infiltren al subsòl, generalment en forma de nitrats (NO3-), provocant la contaminació de les aigües subterrànies. Aquesta pot provocar greus problemes ecològics en els sistemes aquàtics, i afectar a la salut humana. S’ha realitzat un balanç de nitrogen per a les zones agrícoles de l’àrea d’estudi, avaluant els diversos processos que incorporen o extreuen nitrogen al sòl. Paral·lelament, s’ha estudiat el consum d’aigua provocat pel diversos sectors presents a la zona d’estudi, per tal d’avaluar quantitativament la pressió que provoquen sobre els aqüífers. Els resultats obtinguts mostren que la majoria de municipis estudiats generen excedents de nitrogen, justificant la presència de nitrats al subsòl.

L’objecte d’aquest estudi és fer una anàlisi ambiental de la proposta del Pla d’Ordenació Urbanística Municipal del municipi de Viver i Serrateix, i poder presentar en darrer terme, una alternativa al model estudiat, que pugui oferir uns criteris basats en un model més sostenible i respectuós amb l’entorn, i coherent amb la realitat existent.
