We present a review of direct-drive shock ignition studies done as alternative for the Laser Mega-Joule to achieve high thermonuclear gain. One-dimensional analysis of HiPER-like Shock-ignited target designs is presented. It is shown that high gain can be achieved with shock ignition for designs which do not ignite only from the laser compression. Shock ignition is achieved for different targets of the fast ignition family which are driven by an absorbed energy between 100 kJ and 850kJ and deliver thermonuclear energies between 10-130 MJ. Shock-Ignition of Direct-Drive Double-Shell non-cryogenic target is also addressed. 2D results concerning the LMJ irradiation geometry are presented. Few systematic analyses are performed for the fuel assembly irradiation uniformity using the whole LMJ configuration or a part of the facility, and for the ignitor spike uniformity. Solutions for fuel assembly and shock ignition on LMJ using 2D calculations are presented. It is shown that high-gain shock-ignition is possible with intensity of each quad less than 1e15 W/cm2but low modes asymmetries displace the ignitor power in the spike towards higher powers.

Algebraic topology (homology) is used to analyze the state of spiral defect chaos in both laboratory experiments and numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection. The analysis reveals topological asymmetries that arise when non-Boussinesq effects are present. The asymmetries are found in different flow fields in the simulations and are robust to substantial alterations to flow visualization conditions in the experiment. However, the asymmetries are not observable using conventional statistical measures. These results suggest homology may provide a new and general approach for connecting spatiotemporal observations of chaotic or turbulent patterns to theoretical models.

The technical improvement and new applications of Infrared Thermography (IRT) with healthy subjects should be accompanied by results about the reproducibility of IRT measurements in different popula-tion groups. In addition, there is a remarkable necessity of a larger supply on software to analyze IRT images of human beings. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: firstly, to investigate the reproducibility of skin temperature (Tsk) on overweight and obese subjects using IRT in different Regions of Interest (ROI), moments and side-to-side differences (?T); and secondly, to check the reliability of a new software called Termotracker®, specialized on the analysis of IRT images of human beings. Methods: 22 overweight and obese males (11) and females (11) (age: 41,51±7,76 years; height: 1,65±0,09 m; weight: 82,41±11,81 Kg; BMI: 30,17±2,58 kg/m²) were assessed in two consecutive thermograms (5 seconds in-between) by the same observer, using an infrared camera (FLIR T335, Sweden) to get 4 IRT images from the whole body. 11 ROI were selected using Termotracker® to analyze its reproducibility and reliability through Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Coefficient of Variation (CV) values. Results: The reproducibility of the side-to-side differences (?T) between two consecutive thermograms was very high in all ROIs (Mean ICC = 0,989), and excellent between two computers (Mean ICC = 0,998). The re-liability of the software was very high in all the ROIs (Mean ICC = 0,999). Intraexaminer reliability analysing the same subjects in two consecutive thermograms was also very high (Mean ICC = 0,997). CV values of the different ROIs were around 2%. Conclusions: Skin temperature on overweight subjects had an excellent reproducibility for consecutive ther-mograms. The reproducibility of thermal asymmetries (?T) was also good but it had the influence of several factors that should be further investigated. Termotracker® reached excellent reliability results and it is a relia-ble and objective software to analyse IRT images of humans beings.

ABSTRACT Globalization, in recent decades, has had a wide impact and influence on the evolution of the processes involved in the urban planning management. This influence has been particularly notable in the formation processes for the Global Cities (GC). However, within the current processes, even in those started decades ago, discrepancies are found between the urbanterritorial models and their relation to the processes of formation for the CG. This is because each territory, or CG, has not followed a uniform process; although, each process has been adapted through the business model of the "Strategic Planning" (SP) to serve and enhance the most unique characteristics of each urban territory, until reaching the ambitious global leadership positions. Therefore, the success of SP is based on simplifying the complexity of the models and actors involved in the processes of formation of the GCs and territories. This research aims to analyze the value of SP as a process for the urban and territorial management; intended to clarify both models and elements of which it is composed. And, for so, identify the relationships that occur between them. For reasons related to the required limits of all research, and through the support of this research by both the tutor and the consulted outside experts, has agreed to analyze the most characteristic aspects of the strategic process, which are: territory, economy and governance. This research was conducted through the use of the case study methodology; by a process of information collection of two field studies, Singapore and Dubai, with similarities in both the process and the results; and through consultation with a variety of multidisciplinary experts. Whose information and input has been articulated and processed by the use of a system prepared for the complex analysis of realities presented in the research’s conceptual framework. Thus, analyzing the asymmetries and relationship between the results of the study cases of Singapore and Dubai, have shown how the urban-territorial actions, which have been carried out in both cities and in their surrounding territories, are the result of the use of the strategic planning process for the benefit of a better position with respect to the global context. Meanwhile, along the conceptual framework correlates and clarifies the territorial, economic and governance processes, identifying responsibilities between the institutions, agencies, agents and actors (public and private) that initiate and manage both strategic planning and processes derived from it. Finally, the cross-analysis of the results shows the relationship between strategic planning, urban and territorial planning, economic management and governance. Being able to identify and eliminate the asymmetries produced during the implementation of a strategic planning for the formation of a Global City.

ABSTRACT: This study analyzes the structure of the game and the morphological and physiological parameters in badminton players, investigated in four applied studies. Purpose: The purposes of the study were: (1) To check if there are differences between the dominant and non-dominant side in the anthropometric measures of badminton players at the highest national level and verify if the side of the body where the measurements are performed can influence the calculation of the body composition and the somatotype. (2) To compare the temporal and notational structure in men’s singles matches between the Olympic Games in Beijing and London to observe the evolution of badminton between 2008 and 2012. (3) To asses the occurrence of muscle damage after a simulated badminton match and its influence on physical and haematological parameters. (4) To determine the effectiveness of a commercially available energy drink that contains caffeine to improve match performance in elite badminton players. Methods: A total of 78 elite badminton players (63 men and 15 women) participated in this thesis to characterize the sport of badminton distributed in three studies and 40 sets of men’s singles badminton analyzed using the official videos of the Olympic Games of Beijing 2008 and London 2012. In the first study skinfolds, diameters, lengths and perimeters of the dominant and non-dominant side of the players were measured and body composition and somatotype were calculated. In the second study the temporal and notational factors were analyzed. In the third study maximal isometric force and speed in badminton specific tests were measured and blood samples were taken before and after a badminton match of 45 minutes. In the fourth study, a double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled experiment, players ingested 3 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body mass in the form of an energy drink or an identical drink with no caffeine content (placebo). In this study different badminton specific tests (jump tests, handgrip force test and an agility test) were recorded and a simulated badminton match of 45 minutes was played. Results and discussion: (1) The percentage of bone was higher when calculated from measurements of the dominant body side (dominant = 16.37 ± 1.14 %, nondominant = 15.66 ± 1.12 %; P < 0.001), while the muscle percentage was higher when calculated from measurements of the non-dominant side (dominant = 49.39 ± 2.60 %, non-dominant = 50.18 ± 2.69%; P < 0.001). (2) Set duration (Beijing: 1124.6 ± 229.9 s vs. London: 1260.3 ± 267.1 s.; P < 0.05), real time played (Beijing: 306.9 ± 45.7 s vs. London: 354.7 ± 86.5 s; P < 0.05), rally time, shots per rally, rest time at point 11, rest time between sets and shots per rally were significantly higher in London than in Beijing. (3) A simulated badminton match did not affect maximal isometric force (Pre: 1263.6 ± 245.5, Post: 1290.8 ± 240.4 N) or specific badminton speed (Pre: 21.0 ± 1.7, Post: 20.9 ± 1.8 s), however, concentrations of myoglobin and creatine kinase in blood increased from 26.5 ± 11.6 to 197.3 ± 70.2 μg • L-1 and from 258.6 ± 192.2 to 466.0 ± 296.5 U • L-1, respectively after the badminton match. (4) In comparison to the placebo drink, the caffeinated beverage increased height in the SJ (34.5±4.7 vs. 36.4±4.3 cm; P < 0.05) and in the CMJ (37.7 ± 4.5 vs. 39.5 ± 5.1 cm; P < 0.05) and increased the number of total accelerations during the match (7395 ± 1594 vs. 7707 ± 2033 accelerations; P < 0.05). Conclusions: (1) Body asymmetries were found in high level badminton players, due to the differences found in bone diameters and perimeters between the dominant and non-dominant body side. When calculating body composition with the dominant side of the badminton players we are overestimating bone percentage and underestimating muscle percentage. (2) Badminton is evolving towards longer rallies with greater rest intervals, resulting in longer matches. (3) The badminton match generated muscle damage, however, the level of muscle damage reached after a badminton match did not produce a decrease in muscle performance. (4) The ingestion of an energy drink containing caffeine might be an effective ergogenic nutritional supplement to increase jump performance and activity patterns during the game in elite badminton players.

ABSTRACT Individuals who use wheelchairs as their main means of mobility have a high incidence (73%) of shoulder pain (SP) owing to overuse and repetitive propulsion movement. There are numerous diagnostic methods for the detection of shoulder pathologies, however the literature claims that a noninvasive accurate test to properly assess shoulder pain would be necessary, and suggests thermography as a suitable technique for joint pain evaluation. Infrared thermography (IRT) provides information about physiological processes by studying the skin temperature (Tsk) distributions. Due to the high correlation of skin temperature between both sides of the body, thermal asymmetries between contralateral flanks are an indicator of underlying pathologies or physical dysfunctions. The reliability of infrared thermography has been studied in healthy subjects but there are no studies that have analyzed the reliability of IRT in wheelchair users (WCUs). The special characteristics of people with disabilities (sweating and thermoregulation problems, or blood distribution) make it necessary to study the factors affecting the application of IRT in WCUs. Discrepant reports exist on the benefits of, or damage resulting from, physical exercise and the relationship to shoulder overuse injuries in WCUs. Recent findings have found that overhead sports increase the risk of rotator cuff tears in wheelchair patients with paraplegia. Since there is no agreement in the literature, the thermographic profile of wheelchair athletes and nonathletes and its relation with shoulder pain should also be analysed. Infrared thermographic studies during exercise have been carried out only with able-bodied population at present. The understanding of the thermographic response to wheelchair exercise in relation to shoulder pain will offer an insight into the development of shoulder pain, which is necessary for appropriate interventions. The first study presented in this thesis demonstrates that the reliability of IRT in WCUs varies depending on the areas of the body that are analyzed. Moreover, it corroborates that IRT is a noninvasive and noncontact technique that allows the measurement of Tsk, which will allow for advances to be made in research concerned with WCUs. The second study provides a thermal profile of WCUs. Nonathletic subjects presented higher side-to-side skin temperature differences (ΔTsk) than athletes, and both had greater ΔTsk than the able-bodied results that have been published in the literature. Nonathletes also revealed larger Wheelchair Users Shoulder Pain Index (WUSPI) score than athletes. The shoulder region of interest (ROI) was the area with the highest ΔTsk of the regions measured. The analysis of the athletes’ Tsk showed that some ROIs are related to shoulder pain. These findings help to understand the thermal map in WCUs. Finally, the third study evaluated the thermal response of WCUs in exercise. There were significant differences in Tsk between the pre-test and the post-10 min in 12 ROIs, and between the post-test and the post-10 in most of the ROIs. These differences were attenuated when the ΔTsk was compared before and after exercise. Skin temperature tended to initially decrease immediately after the test, followed by a significant increase at 10 minutes after completing the exercise. The ΔTsk versus shoulder pain analysis yielded significant inverse relationships in 5 of the 26 ROIs. No significant correlations between propulsion variables and the results of the WUSPI questionnaire were found. All kinematic variables were significantly correlated with the temperature asymmetries in multiple ROIs. These results present indications that high performance wheelchair athletes exhibit similar capacity of heat production to able-bodied population; however, they presented a thermal pattern more characteristic of a prolonged exercise rather than brief exercise. This work contributes to improve the understanding about temperature changes in wheelchair athletes during exercise and provides implications to the sports and rehabilitation programs.

Within the haplodiploid eusocial gall-inducing thrips, a species-level phylogeny combined with genetic data for five eusocial species enables an inference of levels of relatedness and inbreeding values for lineages at the origin of eusociality. Character optimization using data from five eusocial species indicates that the lineage or lineages where eusociality is inferred to have originated exhibit relatedness of 0.64–0.92, and FIS of 0.33–0.64. The high inbreeding coefficients found in these eusocial thrips have increased relatedness among and within both sexes and have reduced the haplodiploidy-induced relatedness asymmetries [Hamilton, W. D. (1964) J. Theor. Biol. 7, 1–52]. These results indicate that unusually high relatedness is associated with the origin of eusociality, and they suggest a role for inbreeding in the evolution of bisexual helping.

Phylogenetic analyses of asymmetry variation offer a powerful tool for exploring the interplay between ontogeny and evolution because (i) conspicuous asymmetries exist in many higher metazoans with widely varying modes of development, (ii) patterns of bilateral variation within species may identify genetically and environmentally triggered asymmetries, and (iii) asymmetries arising at different times during development may be more sensitive to internal cytoplasmic inhomogeneities compared to external environmental stimuli. Using four broadly comparable asymmetry states (symmetry, antisymmetry, dextral, and sinistral), and two stages at which asymmetry appears developmentally (larval and postlarval), I evaluated relations between ontogenetic and phylogenetic patterns of asymmetry variation. Among 140 inferred phylogenetic transitions between asymmetry states, recorded from 11 classes in five phyla, directional asymmetry (dextral or sinistral) evolved directly from symmetrical ancestors proportionally more frequently among larval asymmetries. In contrast, antisymmetry, either as an end state or as a transitional stage preceding directional asymmetry, was confined primarily to postlarval asymmetries. The ontogenetic origin of asymmetry thus significantly influences its subsequent evolution. Furthermore, because antisymmetry typically signals an environmentally triggered asymmetry, the phylogenetic transition from antisymmetry to directional asymmetry suggests that many cases of laterally fixed asymmetries evolved via genetic assimilation.

The pars triangular is a portion of Broca's area. The convolutions that form the inferior and caudal extent of the pars triangularis include the anterior horizontal and anterior ascending rami of the sylvian fissure, respectively. To learn if there are anatomic asymmetries of the pars triangularis, these convolutions were measured on volumetric magnetic resonance imaging scans of 11 patients who had undergone selective hemispheric anesthesia (Wada testing) to determine hemispheric speech and language lateralization. Of the 10 patients with language lateralized to the left hemisphere, 9 had a leftward asymmetry of the pars triangularis. The 1 patient with language lateralized to the right hemisphere had a significant rightward asymmetry of the pars triangularis. Our data suggest that asymmetries of the pars triangularis may be related to speech-language lateralization.

The genetic relationships of colony members in the ant Myrmica tahoensis were determined on the basis of highly polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci. These analyses show that colonies fall into one of two classes. In roughly half of the sampled colonies, workers and female offspring appear to be full sisters. The remaining colonies contain offspring produced by two or more queens. Colonies that produce female sexuals are always composed of highly related females, while colonies that produce males often show low levels of nestmate relatedness. These results support theoretical predictions that workers should skew sex allocation in response to relatedness asymmetries found within colonies. The existence of a relatedness threshold below which female sexuals are not produced suggests a possible mechanism for worker perception of relatedness. Two results indicate that workers use genetic cues, not queen number, in making sex-allocation decisions. (i) The number of queens in a colony was not significantly correlated with either the level of relatedness asymmetry or the sex ratio. (ii) Sex-ratio shifts consistent with a genetically based mechanism of relatedness assessment were seen in an experiment involving transfers of larvae among unrelated nests. Thus workers appear to make sex-allocation decisions on the basis of larval cues and appear to be able to adjust sex ratios long after egg laying.

We present high-resolution optical echelle spectra and IUE observations during a strong flare on 1993 December 22 in the very active, young, rapidly rotating, single K2 dwarf LQ Hya. The initial impulsive phase of the flare, which started sometime between 2:42 ut and 4:07 ut, was characterized by strong optical continuum enhancement and blueshifted emission lines with broad wings. The optical chromospheric lines reached their maximum intensity at ≈ 5:31 ut, by which time the blueshift vanished and the optical continuum enhancement had sharply decreased. Thereafter, the line emission slowly decreased and the lines redshift in a gradual phase that lasted at least two more hours. The Mg II lines behaved similarly. Quiescent C IV flux levels were not recovered until 21 h later, though a data gap and a possible second flare make the interpretation uncertain. In addition to the typically flare-enhanced emission lines (e.g., H α and H β), we observe He I D_3 going into emission, plus excess emission (after subtraction of the quiescent spectrum) in other He I and several strong neutral metal lines (e.g., Mg I b). Flare enhancement of the far-ultraviolet continuum generally agrees with an Si I recombination model. We estimate the total flare energy, and discuss the broad components, asymmetries and Doppler shifts seen in some of the emission lines.
