A force balance system for measuring lift, thrust and pitching moment has been used to measure the performance of fueled scramjet-powered vehicle in the T4 Shock Tunnel at The University of Queensland. Detailed measurements have been made of the effects of different fuel flow rates corresponding to equivalence ratios between 0.0 and 1.5. For proposed scramjet-powered vehicles, the fore-body of the vehicle acts as part of the inlet to the engine and the aft-body acts as the thrust surface for the engine. This type of engine-integrated design leads to a strong coupling between the performance of the engine and the lift and trim characteristics of the vehicle. The measurements show that the lift force increased by approximately 50% and centre-of-pressure changed by approximately 10% of the chord of the vehicle when the equivalence ratio varied from 0.0 to 1.0. The results demonstrate the importance of engine performance to the overall aerodynamic characteristics of engine-integrated scramjet vehicles and that such characteristics can be measured in a shock tunnel.

We have investigated the role of videoconferencing in allied health service provision to high-care clients in rural residential facilities. Videoconferencing equipment was set up at a rural aged-care facility and a metropolitan allied health centre; ISDN transmission at 384 kbit/s was used to link the equipment. Twelve residents were assessed by both videoconference and face to face across five allied health disciplines (a total of 120 assessments). User satisfaction was measured using questionnaires and focus groups. Face-to-face assessment took significantly longer than videoconferencing assessment. However, the mean satisfaction ratings for face-to-face assessments were higher than for videoconferencing and the majority of the staff preferred the face-to-face format. Videoconferencing was particularly useful for consultations and the initial stages of the assessment process. A number of issues relating to the videoconferencing equipment, to the environment in which assessments were performed and to the clients themselves need to be addressed in order for this form of service delivery to be effective.

The importance of appropriate training in the use of videoconferencing equipment for clinical purposes is often underestimated when telemedicine projects are established. We developed a user training programme which was delivered via videoconferencing to a group of 130 nurses. Training was delivered on a one-to-one basis. A questionnaire was developed to evaluate user satisfaction and the effectiveness of training. One hundred and two fully completed questionnaires were returned (a 79% response rate). High levels of satisfaction were obtained but the level of user competence reached 100% only when training was supported by a training manual and at least weekly practice. Before establishing a telemedicine service, the following steps appear to be important: identify the required training competencies; deliver a 'hands on' training programme based on the required training competencies; back up the training programme with an instruction booklet; ensure that trainees have at least weekly practice; measure the level of user competence.

Challenges of returnable transport equipment (RTE) management continue to heighten as the popularity of their usage magnifies. Logistics companies are investigating the implementation of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology to alleviate problems such as loss prevention and stock reduction. However, the research within this field is limited and fails to fully explore with depth, the wider network improvements that can be made to optimize the supply chain through efficient RTE management. This paper, investigates the nature of RTE network management building on current research and practices, filling a gap in the literature, through the investigation of a product-centric approach where the paradigms of “intelligent products” and “autonomous objects” are explored. A network optimizing approach with RTE management is explored, encouraging advanced research development of the RTE paradigm to align academic research with problematic areas in industry. Further research continues with the development of an agent-based software system, ready for application to a real-case study distribution network, producing quantitative results for further analysis. This is pivotal on the endeavor to developing agile support systems, fully utilizing an information-centric environment and encouraging RTE to be viewed as critical network optimizing tools rather than costly waste.

Returnable transport equipment (RTE) such as pallets form an integral part of the supply chain and poor management leads to costly losses. Companies often address this matter by outsourcing the management of RTE to logistics service providers (LSPs). LSPs are faced with the task to provide logistical expertise to reduce RTE related waste, whilst differentiating their own services to remain competitive. In the current challenging economic climate, the role of the LSP to deliver innovative ways to achieve competitive advantage has never been so important. It is reported that radio frequency identification (RFID) application to RTE enables LSPs such as DHL to gain competitive advantage and offer clients improvements such as loss reduction, process efficiency improvement and effective security. However, the increased visibility and functionality of RFID enabled RTE requires further investigation in regards to decision‐making. The distributed nature of the RTE network favours a decentralised decision‐making format. Agents are an effective way to represent objects from the bottom‐up, capturing the behaviour and enabling localised decision‐making. Therefore, an agent based system is proposed to represent the RTE network and utilise the visibility and data gathered from RFID tags. Two types of agents are developed in order to represent the trucks and RTE, which have bespoke rules and algorithms in order to facilitate negotiations. The aim is to create schedules, which integrate RTE pick‐ups as the trucks go back to the depot. The findings assert that: - agent based modelling provides an autonomous tool, which is effective in modelling RFID enabled RTE in a decentralised utilising the real‐time data facility. ‐ the RFID enabled RTE model developed enables autonomous agent interaction, which leads to a feasible schedule integrating both forward and reverse flows for each RTE batch. ‐ the RTE agent scheduling algorithm developed promotes the utilisation of RTE by including an automatic return flow for each batch of RTE, whilst considering the fleet costs andutilisation rates. ‐ the research conducted contributes an agent based platform, which LSPs can use in order to assess the most appropriate strategies to implement for RTE network improvement for each of their clients.

Fierce competition within the third party logistics (3PL) market has developed as providers compete to win customers and enhance their competitive advantage through cost reduction plans and creating service differentiation. 3PL providers are expected to develop advanced technological and logistical service applications that can support cost reduction while increasing service innovation. To enhance competitiveness, this paper proposes the implementation of radio-frequency identification (RFID) enabled returnable transport equipment (RTE) in combination with the consolidation of network assets and cross-docking. RFID enabled RTE can significantly improve network visibility of all assets with continuous real-time data updates. A four-level cyclic model aiding 3PL providers to achieve competitive advantage has been developed. The focus is to reduce assets, increase asset utilisation, reduce RTE cycle time and introduce real-time data in the 3PL network. This is the first time a multidisciplinary team has employed an iterative co-design method to determine the ergonomic layout of an emergency ambulance treatment space. This process allowed the research team to understand how treatment protocols were performed and developed analytical tools to reach an optimum configuration towards ambulance design standardisation. Fusari conducted participatory observations during 12-hour shifts with front-line ambulance clinicians, hospital staff and patients to understand the details of their working environments whilst on response to urgent and emergency calls. A simple yet accurate 1:1 mock-up of the existing ambulance was built for detailed analysis of these procedures through simulations. Paramedics were called in to participate in interviews and role-playing inside the model to recreate tasks, how they are performed, the equipment used and to understand the limitations of the current ambulance. The use of Link Analysis distilled 5 modes of use. In parallel, an exhaustive audit of all equipment and consumables used in ambulances was performed (logging and photography) to define space use. These developed 12 layout options for refinement and CAD modelling and presented back to paramedics. The preferred options and features were then developed into a full size test rig and appearance model. Two key studies informed the process. The 2005 National Patient Safety Agency funded study “Future Ambulances” outlined 9 design challenges for future standardisation of emergency vehicles and equipment. Secondly, the 2007 EPSRC funded “Smart Pods” project investigated a new system of mobile urgent and emergency medicine to treat patients in the community. A full-size mobile demonstrator unit featuring the evidence-based ergonomic layout was built for clinical tests through simulated emergency scenarios. Results from clinical trials clearly show that the new layout improves infection control, speeds up treatment, and makes it easier for ambulance crews to follow correct clinical protocols.
