The role of working memory in compulsive checking and OCD:a systematic classification of 58 experimental findings

Despite the large body of research regarding the role of memory in OCD, the results are described as mixed at best (Hermans et al., 2008). For example, inconsistent findings have been reported with respect to basic capacity, intact verbal, and generally affected visuospatial memory. We suggest that this is due to the traditional pursuit of OCD memory impairment as one of the general capacity and/or domain specificity (visuospatial vs. verbal). In contrast, we conclude from our experiments (i.e., Harkin & Kessler, 2009, 2011; Harkin, Rutherford, & Kessler, 2011) and recent literature (e.g., Greisberg & McKay, 2003) that OCD memory impairment is secondary to executive dysfunction, and more specifically we identify three common factors (EBL: Executive-functioning efficiency, Binding complexity, and memory Load) that we generalize to 58 experimental findings from 46 OCD memory studies. As a result we explain otherwise inconsistent research – e.g., intact vs. deficient verbal memory – that are difficult to reconcile within a capacity or domain specific perspective. We conclude by discussing the relationship between our account and others', which in most cases is complementary rather than contradictory.

Pyrolysis of polyamide 6 under catalytic conditions and its application to reutilization of carpets

ε-caprolactam is a monomer of high value. Therefore, the chemical reutilization of polyamide 6 containing carpets for ε-caprolactam recovery offers some economic benefit and is performed on a technical scale with the help of the Zimmer-process. By this process polyamide 6 is depolymerized with steam and phosphoric acid. An alternative to this process is the thermal depolymerization - catalyzed or non-catalyzed. To investigate this alternative in more detail, the formal kinetic parameters of (i) the thermal depolymerization of polyamide 6, (ii) the thermal depolymerization in presence of sodium/potassium hydoxide, and (iii) the thermal depolymerization in presence of phosphoric acid are determined in this work. Based on the kinetics of the catalyzed or non-catalyzed depolymerization a stepwise pyrolysis procedure is designed by which the formation of ε-caprolactam from polyamide 6 can be separated from the formation of other pyrolysis products. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

"Sub Tiberio quies"? Judaea’s Political Situation under the Prefects (6-41 c.e.), between Reality and Ideology

Deeply conflicting views on the political situation of Judaea under the Roman prefects (6-41 c.e.) have been offered. According to some scholars, this was a period of persistent political unrest and agitation, whilst according to a widespread view it was a quiescent period of political calm (reflected in Tacitus’ phrase sub Tiberio quies). The present article critically examines again the main available sources –particularly Josephus, the canonical Gospels and Tacitus– in order to offer a more reliable historical reconstruction. The conclusions drawn by this survey calls into question some widespread and insufficiently nuanced views on the period. This, in turn, allows a reflection on the non-epistemic factors which might contribute to explain the origin of such views.

Venimos hoya otorgarle el grado a 238 estudiantes de los programas profesionales y de postgrado del ICESI, entre ellos a siete personas que acceden al grado de Magíster, en el programa que hemos hecho por muchos años con la Universidad Eafit, representada aquí por el doctor Rodrigo Isaza Londoño. Esta ha sido una alianza fructífera en los campos de postgrado y debemos agradecerla muy especialmente,ahora que todos los programas son dirigidos totalmente por el ICESl, inclusive este de maestría, que nos fue autorizado por el Gobierno, a través del ICFES, debido a nuestro creciente y excelente desempeño en los campos de docencia, investigación y servicios a la comunidad.

Influência dos ácidos graxos do tipo ômega-3 ou ômega-6 e o nanomaterial de carbono fulereno (C60) no estado antioxidante em suspensões celulares de cérebro de Cyprinus carpio (Pisces, Cyprinidae)

Os nanomateriais de carbono como o fulereno (C60) apresenta comportamentos bioquímicos distintos, podendo atuar como antioxidante ou pró-oxidante em diferentes sistemas biológicos. Outra evidência ao C60 refere-se a sua característica lipofilica, na qual oferece ação mais direta a diferentes tipos de membranas celulares. Do mesmo modo ácidos graxos poliinsaturados (AGPs) como o ômega-3 (DHA) e o ômega-6 (LA) são importantes para funções celulares da membrana, sendo considerados antioxidantes clássicos. Dessa forma este estudo avaliou em suspensões celulares de cérebro da carpa (Cyprinus carpio, Cyprinidae), o efeito de C60 após um pré-tratamento com DHA ou LA. Para tal avaliação os ensaios consistiram em um pré-tratamento com AGPs (48h) e após exposição a C60 (2h). Como resultados observamos que a viabilidade celular e a capacidade antioxidante total não apresentaram diferença (p> 0.05) entre todos os grupos. Em relação a valores de espécies ativas de oxigênio e dano lipídico foi observado redução nos seus valores nos grupos expostos ao C60 pré – tratados com AGPs (p<0.05). Em termos de cisteína, ocorre uma redução da sua concentração em todos os grupos expostos ao C60. Porém para glutationa a exposição ao C60 provoca um aumento de sua concentração nos grupo controle (sem AGPs) e no grupo pré – tratado com DHA. Dessa forma consideramos que o pré – tratamento com AGPs é benéfico às células, uma vez que um aumento nos níveis de glutationa e uma diminuição na concentração de espécies ativas de oxigênio e peroxidação lipídica foram observados nos grupos expostos ao C60. Sendo assim um bom estado nutritivo em termos da concentração de AGPs foi considerado benéfico na exposição ao fulereno.

Alimentos fortificados con hierro en niños entre 6 a 23 meses del Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso en la ciudad de Cuenca-Ecuador 2015

ANTECEDENTES: Los niños de 6 a 23 meses son vulnerables a déficit por micronutrientes por esto la OMS recomienda la fortificación con hierro. En Ecuador el 62% de niños de 6 a 11 meses y el 32,4% de niños de 12 a 23 meses, presentan anemia por déficit de hierro OBJETIVO GENERAL: Describir la fortificación con hierro de los alimentos de los niños y niñas de 6 a 23 meses de edad, en su hogares, previo a su ingreso en el Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso en un periodo de 5 meses en el año 2015 METODOLOGÍA: Estudio descriptivo en 171 niños de 6 a 23 meses ingresados en el Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso de Cuenca en el 2015. Se recolectaron los datos demográficos acerca de la alimentación fortificada con hierro. RESULTADOS: El 50,8% de los niños estuvieron entre 6 y 12 meses de edad, el 64,1% tuvo estado nutricional normal, el 42,1% fueron hospitalizados por neumonía, el 58,5% viven en zonas urbanas, el 53,85% tiene familias nucleares, el 56,1% con nivel de instrucción básica, el 64,3% de las cuidadoras se dedicaba a quehaceres domésticos. El 52% de niños recibió alimentos fortificados con hierro. Podemos decir que no se encontró relación estadística entre la ingesta de alimentos fortificados y las variables demográficas. CONCLUSIONES: El porcentaje de niños que reciben alimentos fortificados con hierro fue del 52%, por lo tanto es importante promover la ingesta de alimentos fortificados con hierro, para obtener un crecimiento y desarrollo óptimo en los niños

Phosphodiesterase 6 generates intracellular cGMP microdomains in the native endothelium

Endothelial cells (EC) are essential regulator of vascular homeostasis through the generation and release of various bioactive agents, including nitric oxide (NO). NO modulates several vascular functions such as vascular tone and permeability, through the stimulation of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) leading to the production of cGMP. Conversely, phosphodiesterases (PDEs) are enzymes metabolizing cyclic nucleotides (cGMP and cAMP) and are therefore major regulatory players for cGMP and cAMP signalling pathways. Although ECs are the main source of NO, little is known on the endothelial NO-cGMP signalling pathway and cellular outcomes. It was then hypothesized that a specific population of cGMP-phosphodiesterases allows ECs to stabilize cGMP levels despite the elevated production of NO. Expression of cGMP-phosphodiesterases was initially studied in resistance mesenteric arteries from mice. PDE5 and PDE6 were both found at mRNA and protein levels in native arteries but PDE6 is not found in cultured ECs. Interestingly, subcellular distributions of both enzymes were distinct. PDE5 appeared to be homogeneously distributed whilst PDE6 catalytic subunits (PDE6 and PDE6) showed a preferential staining in the perinuclear region. These results suggest that PDE6 might be involved in the regulation of cGMP microdomains. Based on these findings, a mathematical model was developed. Simulations of dynamic cGMP levels in ECs support the notion of cGMP microdomains dependent on PDE6 expression and localization. In the absence of PDE6, application of NO either as a single bolus or repetitive pulses led to a homogeneous increase in cGMP levels in ECs despite PDE5 homogeneous distribution. However, PDE6 subcellular targeting to the perinuclear membrane generated a cGMP-depleted perinuclear space. The findings from this study provide the first evidence of the expression and specific intracellular distribution of PDE6 in native endothelial cells that strongly support their involvement in the generation of cGMP microdomains

Leptin modifies the prosecretory and prokinetic effects of the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 on colonic function in Sprague–Dawley rats

Leptin ameliorates the prosecretory and prokinetic effects of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 on rat colon. Leptin also suppresses the neurostimulatory effects of irritable bowel syndrome plasma, which has elevated concentrations of interleukin-6, on enteric neurons. This may indicate a regulatory role for leptin in immune-mediated bowel dysfunction. In addition to its role in regulating energy homeostasis, the adipokine leptin modifies gastrointestinal (GI) function. Indeed, leptin-resistant obese humans and leptin-deficient obese mice exhibit altered GI motility. In the functional GI disorder irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), circulating leptin concentrations are reported to differ from those of healthy control subjects. Additionally, IBS patients display altered cytokine profiles, including elevated circulating concentrations of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6), which bears structural homology and similarities in intracellular signalling to leptin. This study aimed to investigate interactions between leptin and IL-6 in colonic neurons and their possible contribution to IBS pathophysiology. The functional effects of leptin and IL-6 on colonic contractility and absorptosecretory function were assessed in organ baths and Ussing chambers in Sprague–Dawley rat colon. Calcium imaging and immunohistochemical techniques were used to investigate the neural regulation of GI function by these signalling molecules. Our findings provide a neuromodulatory role for leptin in submucosal neurons, where it inhibited the stimulatory effects of IL-6. Functionally, this translated to suppression of IL-6-evoked potentiation of veratridine-induced secretory currents. Leptin also attenuated IL-6-induced colonic contractions, although it had little direct effect on myenteric neurons. Calcium responses evoked by IBS plasma in both myenteric and submucosal neurons were also suppressed by leptin, possibly through interactions with IL-6, which is elevated in IBS plasma. As leptin has the capacity to ameliorate the neurostimulatory effects of soluble mediators in IBS plasma and modulated IL-6-evoked changes in bowel function, leptin may have a role in immune-mediated bowel dysfunction in IBS patients.

PREVENÇÃO DO DESMAME PRECOCE EM CRIANÇAS DE 0 A 6 MESES NA ESF NOVA PORTO XV DE NOVEMBRO/ BATAGUASSU/MS

Trata-se de um estudo descritivo analítico realizado na Estratégia de Saúde da Família (ESF) Nova Porto XV de Novembro, pertencente à cidade de Bataguassu MS. O presente trabalho abordou aspectos relativos ao aleitamento materno exclusivo até o sexto mês de vida do bebê. O objetivo do trabalho teve a finalidade de desenvolver ações para incentivar o aleitamento materno exclusivo e diminuir o desmame precoce em crianças de 0 a 6 meses de vida, bem como, planejar e realizar atividades educativas para as gestantes através de reuniões de grupo; consultas e visitas domiciliares, além de, promover o aleitamento no puerpério com a influência positiva dos profissionais de saúde. Para o desenvolvimento do tema foi realizado um levantamento das gestantes cadastradas na unidade já referida, utilizando as fichas gerais de atendimentos, além de dados do SISPRENATAL e SIAB. Os resultados desta intervenção foram positivos, pois, no período do estudo houve aumento notável do AME em comparação ao ano de 2013 chegando a 84,5% em 2014. Através das intervenções deste trabalho, pôde-se concluir que os profissionais de saúde necessitam de estímulo quanto à priorização do tema do AME e a humanização do atendimento. As ações feitas pela equipe, voltadas à promoção do AME e as visitas domiciliares no puerpério surtiram um efeito relevante nas atitudes das gestantes quanto ao conhecimento e importância deste, evidenciando um aumento significativo dos índices de AME no período.
