The relationship between occupational exposures and glioma has not been adequately assessed due to the lack of studies in current scientific literature. To address this disparity, the Harris County Brain Tumor Study, an ongoing population-based case-control study, began in January 2001. Longest-held occupation for 382 cases and 629 controls were frequency matched on age (within 5 years), sex, and race and placed into 14 predetermined occupational categories. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated for each category using multiple logistic regression. Potential confounders assessed included sex, age, smoking status, education and income. For all subjects, significantly elevated adjusted odds ratios were found in health-related (aOR=1.66; 95%CI=1.03, 2.68), teaching (aOR=1.84; 95%CI=1.17, 2.88), and protective service (aOR=3.6; 95%CI=1.05, 12.31) occupational categories after controlling for sex and education. A significantly lowered odds ratio was seen in the writers, artists, and entertainers category (aOR=0.14; 95%CI=0.03, 0.58). In the stratified analyses, which controlled for education, males had a significantly elevated odds ratio for protective service workers (aOR=4.83; 95%CI=1.24, 18.83) while a significantly lower odds ratio was found in mechanics and machine operators (aOR=0.33; 95%CI=0.12,0.87). In females, we observed a significantly elevated odds ratio in teachers (aOR=1.99; 95%CI=1.20,3.31) and a significantly lower odds ratio in clerical workers (aOR=0.63; 95%CI=0.45,0.90). These analyses revealed several significant associations and allowed for separate analyses by gender, distinguishing this study from many glioma studies. Further analyses should provide a large enough sample size to stratify by gender as well as histological subtype.^

A detailed study of physical properties was made on core samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 504B. The measured properties are density, porosity, sonic velocity, electrical resistivity, and fluid permeability. Basalts from this young oceanic crust have higher density and sonic velocity than the average DSDP basalts. Porosity (and temperature) dependences of physical properties are given by V = Vo - a-phi; roo = roo-0 exp(E*/RT)phi**-q; k = k0' phi**2q-1; where V is the sonic velocity (km/s), Vo = 6.45 (km/s), a = 0.111 (km/s %), phi is the porosity (%), roo is the electrical resistivity (ohm m), roo-0 = 0.002 (ohm m), E* = 2.7 (Kcal/mol) for fresh basalts, RT has its usual meaning, q = 1.67 ± 0.27, k is the permeability, k0' = (1 to about 10) x 10**-12 (cm**2). Porosity distribution in the crust in this area is estimated by combining the seismic velocity distribution and velocity-porosity relation. Because of the rapid decrease in porosity with depth, resistivity increases and permeability decreases rapidly with depth. The decreasing rate of permeability with increasing depth is approximately given by k(cm**2) = 2 x 10**-10 exp(-z (km)/0.3).

Petrographic and geochemical study of basalts in the Kerguelen Plateau basement revealed changes in composition and character of volcanism during development of this tectonovolcanic structure. The Kerguelen Plateau is one of the largest intraplate rises in the World Ocean. It started to form about 120 Ma ago. Age of basalts and overlying sediments shows that plateau formation was in the northwest direction. Basalts of the Kerguelen Plateau basement are products of tholeiitic melts in terms of geochemistry, but differ from mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB). They are enriched in incompatible trace elements and rare earth elements (REE) relative to MORB, and degree of enrichment varies in basalts from different segments of the plateau. Composition of basalts does not directly depend on their age. Specific features of plateau magmatism are commonly explained in terms of a long-living deep magma plume, which variously interacted with a depleted upper mantle source at different stages of plateau formation. However, taking into account block morphology and deep structure of the plateau, one can suggest that plateau volcanism was initiated by a large fault. As the volcanism prograded to the northwest, depth of fault penetration into the mantle changed. Composition of basalts in the plateau basement was also governed by formation depth of primary melts.
