Profiling "new" communication technologies in adolescence

In an overview of some of the central issues concerning the impact and effects of new technology in adolescence, this article questions the reality of the net generation before considering the interplay of new and old technologies, the internet as both communication and lifestyle resource, and newer technologies like text messaging and webcams.

Adolescent risk behaviors and communication research - Current directions

Examples of recent research into adolescent risk behaviors from a variety of disciplines and methodologies, denoting the range of researchers interested in this area and whose interest in communication and language articulates and exemplifies the extent of the field, are surveyed in this article.

Democracry and the Individual

The main question informing this paper is whether it is possible to extend democracy beyond its liberal forms. The paper reflects upon this question with regard to its implications for the individual. For the radicalization of democracy implies a need for self-transformation, if the everyday egoism of contemporary citizens is not to thwart reasonable discussion and participation. Theorists such as Richard Rorty argue that the philosophical resources required to guide such self-transformation can be made available only by sacrificing the political freedom and cultural diversity liberalism has been able to precariously establish. Other theorists insist that the thresholds of pluralism and tolerance that existing liberal democracies are struggling to maintain actually require an extension of democracy. The paper evaluates two different theoretical strategies that aim to identify potentials for democratization without falling prey to the dilemma identified by Rorty: a ‘ deliberative’ strategy explicated with reference to Jürgen Habermas and an ‘existential’ approach represented here by William Connolly.

Constructing and reconstructing teaching roles: A focus on generative metaphors and dichotomies

Over the last several decades, a shift in thinking has brought to the fore the power of language as more than simply a method of expression. Indeed, language is a constituent part of social practices and social identity. For teachers, both pre-service and in-service, teaching roles are often represented through surface and generative metaphors, the latter of which are tacit. In order to study the way in which language, and in particular metaphor, influences thinking about teaching roles, the authors of this article combined their data to examine the metaphoric discourse of both pre-service and in-service teachers. Contextualizing two separate studies in their respective teacher education programs, this article highlights the obstacle of unexposed generative metaphors and the value of ongoing professional development. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of deconstructing traditional dichotomies as central to teacher education reform.

A new wavelet-based adaptive method for solving population balance equations

A new wavelet-based adaptive framework for solving population balance equations (PBEs) is proposed in this work. The technique is general, powerful and efficient without the need for prior assumptions about the characteristics of the processes. Because there are steeply varying number densities across a size range, a new strategy is developed to select the optimal order of resolution and the collocation points based on an interpolating wavelet transform (IWT). The proposed technique has been tested for size-independent agglomeration, agglomeration with a linear summation kernel and agglomeration with a nonlinear kernel. In all cases, the predicted and analytical particle size distributions (PSDs) are in excellent agreement. Further work on the solution of the general population balance equations with nucleation, growth and agglomeration and the solution of steady-state population balance equations will be presented in this framework. Pretende defender que a educação contínua e ao longo da vida para o Serviço Social deve levar em conta os caminhos e as perspectivas que ultrapassam a arena da profissão do assistente social, e essa educação deve dialogar com os avanços nas vidas e nos trabalhos profissionais. Os assistentes sociais podem desta maneira moverem-se entre a prática, a gestão, a política profissional e a educação. Desde a experiência pré-qualificadora até à reforma, a avaliação e a supervisão podem ajudar a desenvolver caminhos profissionais e planos de educação relevantes. O exemplo deste processo de educação contínua multiprofissional em St. Christopher’s Hospice London pode ajudar a compreender como as pessoas podem desenvolver-se como pessoas e nos seus projectos profissionais.

Current issues in Social Work Theory

São aqui analisados os discursos sobre as tendências gerais na teoria de Serviço Social. Estes discursos sobre o papel do Serviço Social são tratados no contexto da sociedade, bem como do cliente -assistente sócial -agência. A teoria da prática representa um discurso entre as perspectivas de Serviço Social nos seus aspectos transformacionais, terapêuticos e de ordem social. São também abordadas as suas várias combinações e interacções em todo o tipo de prática e organização de Serviço Social. O discurso sobre a eficácia baseia¬se em estudos comprovados da construção social, potenciação (empowerment), e realismo crítico ainda polémico. A prática reflectiva e crítica constitui os modelos actuais que interligam a teoria e a prática.

The Challenges of Globalisation and Harmonisation for European Social Work

A globalização tem provocado alterações importantes na educação e na prática de Serviço Social. Estas têm a ver com a privatização, dependência do mercado, e a “nova gestão”. Estes factores determinam a resposta dos assistentes sociais aos clientes e a maneira como são tratados como empregados. Os formadores de Serviço Social devem integrar nos seus currículos os elementos associados com a globalização, os conhecimentos e as competências necessárias para a prática em contextos diversificados, e a potenciação (empowerment) dos clientes. É um desafio que está aberto para os planeadores da formação em Serviço Social. A União Europeia tem todo interesse em avançar com uma globalização inclusiva, solidariedade social e justiça social através de Serviço Social relevante. Existem todavia muitos obstáculos que precisam de ser previstos, contornados e ultrapassados.

Social Work in the Portuguese empire Health Services

Muitos historiadores, particularmente estrangeiros, que vêem Portugal “de fora”, têm-se mostrado críticos do mau desempenho do império colonial português.Aintolerância religiosa, uso excessivo de força para conseguir o monopólio de especiarias, são alguns aspectos que mereceram críticas mais duras [Devo admitir que fui eu um destes críticos!] mas quase sempre bem fundamentadas e difíceis de rejeitar. Mas é preciso admitir que a história colonial portuguesa é também feita de elementos positivos e menos violentos. Os portugueses devem ser considerados pioneiros de assistência social através das suas políticas inovadoras que providenciaram cuidados para os doentes e desgraçados, embora estas políticas não abrangessem os sujeitos não-Cristãos do império.
