During expedition 202 of research vessel SONNE in 2009, 39 sea-floor surface sediments were sampled over a wide area across the North Pacific and the Bering Sea, which are well suited as reference archives of modern environmental processes. In this study, we used the samples to infer the documentation of land-ocean linkages of terrigenous sediment supply. We followed an integrated approach of grain-size analysis, bulk mineralogy, and clay mineralogy in combination with statistical data evaluation (end-member modelling of grain-size data, fuzzy-cluster analysis of mineralogical data), in order to identify the significant sources and modes of sediment transport in an overregional context. We also compiled literature data on clay mineralogy and updated those with the new data. Today, two processes of terrigenous sediment supply prevail in the study area: far-distant aeolian sediment supply to the pelagic North Pacific as well as hemipelagic sediment dispersal from nearby land sources by ocean currents along the continental margins and island arcs of the study area. The aeolian particles show the finest grain sizes (clay and fine silt), while the hemipelagic sediments have high abundances of sortable silt, particles >10 microns.

The d18O values of interstitial waters from Site 994 and Site 997 sediments, Blake Ridge, western Atlantic, tend to decrease with depth from 0.3 per mil to -0.5 per mil Standard Mean Ocean Water in the upper 200 mbsf, then fluctuate with significant positive spikes of Delta = 0.2 per mil - 0.5 per mil in the gas hydrate zone (200 to 450 mbsf), and finally increase from -0.4 per mil to -0.2 per mil toward 700 mbsf. Positive shifts of d18O IW in the gas hydrate zone are probably caused by the dissociation of gas hydrates originally contained in sediment cores. Gas hydrates recovered from the sites are enriched in 18O, d18O ranging between 2.7 per mil and 3.5 per mil. d18O values of gas hydrates and ambient interstitial waters give an oxygen isotopic fractionation factor of 1.0034-1.0040 at 12°-16°C and ~31 MPa (3 km below sea level). Based on this fractionation and observed isotopic anomalies in the gas hydrate zone, gas hydrates occupy 6% to 12% of pore-space volume within Blake Ridge sediments.

Samples of high grade metamorphic basement rocks of Wilson Terrane cropping out in the Deep Freeze Range and on Kay Island were collected during GANOVEX VI to study their isotopic evolution. The age and origin of granulite facies gneisses and of their migmatite host rocks are especially of interest for the interpretation of the geological and tectonic development of North Victoria Land. Another important research aspect is the influence of the polyphase metamorphic evolution on the isotopic systems of whole rocks and minerals like zircon, garnet, orthopyroxene, amphibole and feldspar.

The thermal structure of the Pacific Ocean between water depths of about 1 and 4.5 kilometers is estimated from the oxygen isotopic ratio of benthonic foraminifera from deep-drilled and piston cores of early Pliocene age (about 3 to 5 million years ago). The ratio of oxygen-18 to oxygen-16 in the early Pliocene at each site varies by an average of only ± 0.12 per mil (1 standard deviation). A plot of the oxygen isotopic ratio against modern bottom-water temperature is adequately fit by a line having a slope of - 0.26 per mil per degree Celsius (the equilibrium temperature dependence of calcite-water fractionation), suggesting that the temperature gradient of the Pacific Ocean during the early Pliocene was similar to that of today.

The plasticity characteristics of the Quaternary sediments of the Guatemalan continental margin were determined from five sites drilled during Leg 67 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. The 64 samples analyzed are from various marine environments, including the Cocos Plate, Middle America Trench, and the trench lower slope to midslope of the Guatemalan continental slope. The sediments are primarily hemipelagic muds and trench-fill turbidites and include quantities of siliceous and calcareous biogenic components. The sediments are generally classified as organic clays of medium to high plasticity, containing micaceous sands and silts, with 14% classed as inorganic clays of medium to high plasticity. High sedimentation rates in Quaternary sediments are the result, in part, of sediment gravity flows that depend upon rheological properties, i.e., sediment plasticity. Mudflows and cohesive debris flows appear to be significant downslope transport mechanisms in these highly plastic sediments.

Analyses of Pb from mid-ocean ridge basalts obtained from DSDP Leg 37 lie on a line of near-zero-age slope. The data seem consistent with an evolutionary model of three stages, the beginning of the second stage being at about 600 m.y. - the model age obtained for the least radiogenic Pb. The beginning of the third stage of evolution at the time of formation of the rocks apparently did not change the average Th/U ratio since measured values are consistent with the ratio deduced from Pb isotope ratios. Ratios of U/Pb are not consistent with Pb isotope ratios, however, thus ruling out a simple two-stage evolutionary model.

The aim of this paper is to deepen in the terminology of Records Management established by ISO standards, through a concrete example such as an interlinguistic comparison between UNE ISO 15489-1 and DIN ISO 15489-1, that is, between the Spanish and German versions of the ISO 15489-1. For that, the text is divided into two major and complementary parts, which are similar to both analytical perspectives adopted: the semantic one and the pragmatic one. The first one compares the words per se, taking into account the significant or word form as well as the significance or meaning. In the second part, examples of use from both languages are discussed, concerning the three terms considered essential in the text (Record, Records Management System and Records Management). The main conclusion lies in understanding how important the language is as a discrete tool of work for all information scientists, specially concerning to the standards, where the translators must show their best linguistic strategies to go unnoticed.

This study aimed at evaluating the functional activation and activating receptors expression on resting, short- and long-term NK and NK-like T cells from blood of ovarian neoplasia patients. Blood from patients with adnexal benign alterations (n = 10) and ovarian cancer (grade I-IV n = 14) were collected after signed consent. Effector cells activation was evaluated by the expression of the CD107a molecule. Short-term culture was conducted overnight with IL-2 and long-term culture for 21 days, by a method designed to expand CD56(+) lymphocytes. Short-term culture significantly increased NK cells activation compared to resting NK cells (p<0.05), however, the long-term procedure supported an even higher increase (p<0.001). Resting NK-like T cells showed poor activation, which was not altered by the culture procedures. The long-term culture effectively increased the expression of the activating receptors on NK and NK-like T cells, either by increasing the number of cells expressing a given receptor and/or by up-regulating their expression intensity. As a conclusion, the long-term culture system employed, resulted in a high number of functional NK cells. The culture system was particularly efficient on the up-regulation of NKp30 and DNAM-1 receptors on NK cells.
