With the introduction of new input devices, such as multi-touch surface displays, the Nintendo WiiMote, the Microsoft Kinect, and the Leap Motion sensor, among others, the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) finds itself at an important crossroads that requires solving new challenges. Given the amount of three-dimensional (3D) data available today, 3D navigation plays an important role in 3D User Interfaces (3DUI). This dissertation deals with multi-touch, 3D navigation, and how users can explore 3D virtual worlds using a multi-touch, non-stereo, desktop display. ^ The contributions of this dissertation include a feature-extraction algorithm for multi-touch displays (FETOUCH), a multi-touch and gyroscope interaction technique (GyroTouch), a theoretical model for multi-touch interaction using high-level Petri Nets (PeNTa), an algorithm to resolve ambiguities in the multi-touch gesture classification process (Yield), a proposed technique for navigational experiments (FaNS), a proposed gesture (Hold-and-Roll), and an experiment prototype for 3D navigation (3DNav). The verification experiment for 3DNav was conducted with 30 human-subjects of both genders. The experiment used the 3DNav prototype to present a pseudo-universe, where each user was required to find five objects using the multi-touch display and five objects using a game controller (GamePad). For the multi-touch display, 3DNav used a commercial library called GestureWorks in conjunction with Yield to resolve the ambiguity posed by the multiplicity of gestures reported by the initial classification. The experiment compared both devices. The task completion time with multi-touch was slightly shorter, but the difference was not statistically significant. The design of experiment also included an equation that determined the level of video game console expertise of the subjects, which was used to break down users into two groups: casual users and experienced users. The study found that experienced gamers performed significantly faster with the GamePad than casual users. When looking at the groups separately, casual gamers performed significantly better using the multi-touch display, compared to the GamePad. Additional results are found in this dissertation.^

The distribution patterns of opal and quartz on the ocean floor of the subtropical southeastern Pacific have been defined by analyzing 59 surface-sediment samples. The opal distribution resembles that of primary productivity in the surface waters, except along the Peruvian and northern Chilean coasts, where dilution reduces opal values. The distribution pattern of quartz represents both eolian and fluvial transport. Quartz distribution extends out as a tongue in the same direction and position as the prevailing southeast trade winds. Along the South American coast, high quartz concentrations are found in patches near shore and decrease rapidly seaward.

As complex radiotherapy techniques become more readily-practiced, comprehensive 3D dosimetry is a growing necessity for advanced quality assurance. However, clinical implementation has been impeded by a wide variety of factors, including the expense of dedicated optical dosimeter readout tools, high operational costs, and the overall difficulty of use. To address these issues, a novel dry-tank optical CT scanner was designed for PRESAGE 3D dosimeter readout, relying on 3D printed components and omitting costly parts from preceding optical scanners. This work details the design, prototyping, and basic commissioning of the Duke Integrated-lens Optical Scanner (DIOS).
The convex scanning geometry was designed in ScanSim, an in-house Monte Carlo optical ray-tracing simulation. ScanSim parameters were used to build a 3D rendering of a convex ‘solid tank’ for optical-CT, which is capable of collimating a point light source into telecentric geometry without significant quantities of refractive-index matched fluid. The model was 3D printed, processed, and converted into a negative mold via rubber casting to produce a transparent polyurethane scanning tank. The DIOS was assembled with the solid tank, a 3W red LED light source, a computer-controlled rotation stage, and a 12-bit CCD camera. Initial optical phantom studies show negligible spatial inaccuracies in 2D projection images and 3D tomographic reconstructions. A PRESAGE 3D dose measurement for a 4-field box treatment plan from Eclipse shows 95% of voxels passing gamma analysis at 3%/3mm criteria. Gamma analysis between tomographic images of the same dosimeter in the DIOS and DLOS systems show 93.1% agreement at 5%/1mm criteria. From this initial study, the DIOS has demonstrated promise as an economically-viable optical-CT scanner. However, further improvements will be necessary to fully develop this system into an accurate and reliable tool for advanced QA.
Pre-clinical animal studies are used as a conventional means of translational research, as a midpoint between in-vitro cell studies and clinical implementation. However, modern small animal radiotherapy platforms are primitive in comparison with conventional linear accelerators. This work also investigates a series of 3D printed tools to expand the treatment capabilities of the X-RAD 225Cx orthovoltage irradiator, and applies them to a feasibility study of hippocampal avoidance in rodent whole-brain radiotherapy.
As an alternative material to lead, a novel 3D-printable tungsten-composite ABS plastic, GMASS, was tested to create precisely-shaped blocks. Film studies show virtually all primary radiation at 225 kVp can be attenuated by GMASS blocks of 0.5cm thickness. A state-of-the-art software, BlockGen, was used to create custom hippocampus-shaped blocks from medical image data, for any possible axial treatment field arrangement. A custom 3D printed bite block was developed to immobilize and position a supine rat for optimal hippocampal conformity. An immobilized rat CT with digitally-inserted blocks was imported into the SmART-Plan Monte-Carlo simulation software to determine the optimal beam arrangement. Protocols with 4 and 7 equally-spaced fields were considered as viable treatment options, featuring improved hippocampal conformity and whole-brain coverage when compared to prior lateral-opposed protocols. Custom rodent-morphic PRESAGE dosimeters were developed to accurately reflect these treatment scenarios, and a 3D dosimetry study was performed to confirm the SmART-Plan simulations. Measured doses indicate significant hippocampal sparing and moderate whole-brain coverage.

Centromeres are essential chromosomal loci at which kinetochore formation occurs for spindle fiber attachment during mitosis and meiosis, guiding proper segregation of chromosomes. In humans, centromeres are located at large arrays of alpha satellite DNA, contributing to but not defining centromere function. The histone variant CENP-A assembles at alpha satellite DNA, epigenetically defining the centromere. CENP-A containing chromatin exists as an essential domain composed of blocks of CENP-A nucleosomes interspersed with blocks of H3 nucleosomes, and is surrounded by pericentromeric heterochromatin. In order to maintain genomic stability, the CENP-A domain is propagated epigenetically over each cell division; disruption of propagation is associated with chromosome instabilities such as aneuploidy, found in birth defects and in cancer.
The CENP-A chromatin domain occupies 30-45% of the alpha satellite array, varying in genomic distance according to the underlying array size. However, the molecular mechanisms that control assembly and organization of CENP-A chromatin within its genomic context remain unclear. The domain may shift, expand, or contract, as CENP-A is loaded and dispersed each cell cycle. We hypothesized that in order to maintain genome stability, the centromere is inherited as static chromatin domains, maintaining size and position within the pericentric heterochromatin. Utilizing stretched chromatin fibers, I found that CENP-A chromatin is limited to a sub-region of the alpha satellite array that is fixed in size and location through the cell cycle and across populations.
The average amount of CENP-A at human centromeres is largely consistent, implying that the variation in size of CENP-A domains reflects variations in the number of CENP-A subdomains and/or the density of CENP-A nucleosomes. Multi-color nascent protein labeling experiments were utilized to examine the distribution and incorporation of distinct pools of CENP-A over several cell cycles. I found that in each cell cycle there is independent CENP-A distribution, occurring equally between sister centromeres across all chromosomes, in similar quantities. Furthermore, centromere inheritance is achieved through specific placement of CENP-A, following an oscillating pattern that fixes the location and size of the CENP-A domain. These results suggest that spatial and temporal dynamics of CENP-A are important for maintaining centromere and genome stability.

Preserving the cultural heritage of the performing arts raises difficult and sensitive issues, as each performance is unique by nature and the juxtaposition between the performers and the audience cannot be easily recorded. In this paper, we report on an experimental research project to preserve another aspect of the performing arts—the history of their rehearsals. We have specifically designed non-intrusive video recording and on-site documentation techniques to make this process transparent to the creative crew, and have developed a complete workflow to publish the recorded video data and their corresponding meta-data online as Open Data using state-of-the-art audio and video processing to maximize non-linear navigation and hypervideo linking. The resulting open archive is made publicly available to researchers and amateurs alike and offers a unique account of the inner workings of the worlds of theater and opera.

This multi-perspectival Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study explored how people in the ‘networks of concern’ talked about how they tried to make sense of the challenging behaviours of four children with severe learning disabilities. The study also aimed to explore what affected relationships between people. The study focussed on 4 children through interviewing their mothers, their teachers and the Camhs Learning Disability team members who were working with them. Two fathers also joined part of the interviews. All interviews were conducted separately using a semi-structured approach. IPA allowed both a consideration of the participant’s lived experiences and ‘objects of concern’ and a deconstruction of the multiple contexts of people’s lives, with a particular focus on disability. The analysis rendered five themes: the importance of love and affection, the difficulties, and the differences of living with a challenging child, the importance of being able to make sense of the challenges and the value of good relationships between people. Findings were interpreted through the lens of CMM (Coordinated Management of Meaning), which facilitated a systemic deconstruction and reconstruction of the findings. The research found that making sense of the challenges was a key concern for parents. Sharing meanings were important for people’s relationships with each other, including employing diagnostic and behavioural narratives. The importance of context is also highlighted including a consideration of how societal views of disability have an influence on people in the ‘network of concern’ around the child. A range of systemic approaches, methods and techniques are suggested as one way of improving services to these children and their families. It is suggested that adopting a ‘both/and’ position is important in such work - both applying evidence based approaches and being alert to and exploring the different ways people try and make sense of the children’s challenges. Implications for practice included helping professionals be alert to their constructions and professional narratives, slowing the pace with families, staying close to the concerns of families and addressing network issues.

Au cours des dernières décennies, la région de l’Arctique s’est vue propulsée au cœur de nombreuses analyses et controverses scientifiques, médiatiques et politiques. Avec la fonte des glaces, de nouvelles perspectives économiques et maritimes voient le jour, principalement en matière de navigation et d’exploitation des ressources naturelles, amenant les États riverains, ainsi que de nombreux autres pays du globe, à en faire une priorité en matière de politique internationale. L’intérêt de la communauté internationale s’est concrétisé principalement à partir des années 1990 – notamment avec la création du Conseil de l’Arctique en 1996 dont font partie la Russie, le Canada, les États-Unis, l’Islande, la Norvège, ainsi que certains États européens tels que la Suède, la Finlande et le Danemark. Cependant, l’Union européenne n’a manifesté une position plus proactive qu’à partir de 2008. En quelques années, Bruxelles s’est énormément mobilisée pour s’informer davantage sur la région et on a vu croître de manière considérable le nombre de rencontres, de conférences, de partages des connaissances sur les sujets arctiques. La publication d’une première communication de la Commission européenne sur la région arctique officialisa cette position plus déterminée de l’Union envers les enjeux arctiques. Cette recherche vise à étudier l’évolution et l’élaboration d’une politique européenne arctique, ainsi que les raisons et intérêts qui sous-tendent celle-ci. Il sera également question de se pencher sur les principaux obstacles rencontrés par l’Union dans ce processus et analyser les relations qu’elle entretient avec les différents États arctiques. Enfin, une mise au point de la situation actuelle sera faite afin de comprendre les divers défis et opportunités qu’elle peut rencontrer dans ce nouveau rôle d’acteur arctique.

The semiconductor nanowire has been widely studied over the past decade and identified as a promising nanotechnology building block with application in photonics and electronics. The flexible bottom-up approach to nanowire growth allows for straightforward fabrication of complex 1D nanostructures with interesting optical, electrical, and mechanical properties. III-V nanowires in particular are useful because of their direct bandgap, high carrier mobility, and ability to form heterojunctions and have been used to make devices such as light-emitting diodes, lasers, and field-effect transistors. However, crystal defects are widely reported for III-V nanowires when grown in the common out-of-plane <111>B direction. Furthermore, commercialization of nanowires has been limited by the difficulty of assembling nanowires with predetermined position and alignment on a wafer-scale. In this thesis, planar III-V nanowires are introduced as a low-defect and integratable nanotechnology building block grown with metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Planar GaAs nanowires grown with gold seed particles self-align along the <110> direction on the (001) GaAs substrate. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that planar GaAs nanowires are nearly free of crystal defects and grow laterally and epitaxially on the substrate surface. The nanowire morphology is shown to be primarily controlled through growth temperature and an ideal growth window of 470 +\- 10 °C is identified for planar GaAs nanowires. Extension of the planar growth mode to other materials is demonstrated through growth of planar InAs nanowires. Using a sacrificial layer, the transfer of planar GaAs nanowires onto silicon substrates with control over the alignment and position is presented. A metal-semiconductor field-effect transistor fabricated with a planar GaAs nanowire shows bulk-like low-field electron transport characteristics with high mobility. The aligned planar geometry and excellent material quality of planar III-V nanowires may lead to highly integrated III-V nanophotonics and nanoelectronics.

This paper has two main objectives. Firstly, to identify the role of the university-focused intermediaries, specifically UVCs, in order to explain how they interact at the early stage of USO creation, particularly regarding knowledge sharing. Secondly, to analyse whether they change their position once the USO is developed. This gives rise to two Research Questions: How does knowledge sharing occur in the dynamics of a university-based entrepreneurial ecosystem? And Do particular participants, such as UTTOs or UVCs, always occupy the same role and position within the university-based entrepreneurial ecosystem?

This paper proposes and investigates a metaheuristic tabu search algorithm (TSA) that generates optimal or near optimal solutions sequences for the feedback length minimization problem (FLMP) associated to a design structure matrix (DSM). The FLMP is a non-linear combinatorial optimization problem, belonging to the NP-hard class, and therefore finding an exact optimal solution is very hard and time consuming, especially on medium and large problem instances. First, we introduce the subject and provide a review of the related literature and problem definitions. Using the tabu search method (TSM) paradigm, this paper presents a new tabu search algorithm that generates optimal or sub-optimal solutions for the feedback length minimization problem, using two different neighborhoods based on swaps of two activities and shifting an activity to a different position. Furthermore, this paper includes numerical results for analyzing the performance of the proposed TSA and for fixing the proper values of its parameters. Then we compare our results on benchmarked problems with those already published in the literature. We conclude that the proposed tabu search algorithm is very promising because it outperforms the existing methods, and because no other tabu search method for the FLMP is reported in the literature. The proposed tabu search algorithm applied to the process layer of the multidimensional design structure matrices proves to be a key optimization method for an optimal product development.
