The unimolecular Charge separation reactions of the doubly charged ions [C6H4Cl2]2+, [C6H3Cl]2+ produced in the ion source by electron impact from o-, m-, and p-dichloro benzene have been studied using mass analysed ion kinetic energy spectrometry. The values of kinetic energy releases (T) can be calculated from the energy dispersion of product ions. As T essentially reflects the release of coulombic energy, which can be used to calculate the approximate distances R between the two charges immediately before decomposition of the ions. From these data, some structural information about transiton states could be provided. The ECID and CID processes of above doubly charged ions, have also been studied. We found that the CID reactions of (C6H4Cl2)2+ could be used to distinguish three dichloro benzene isomers.

The unimolecular charge separation reactions of the doubly charged ions FeC10H102+, FeC10H theta 2+, FeC10H82+ produced in the ion source by electron impact from ferrocene have been studied using Mass analyzed Ion Kinetic Energy Spectrometry (MIKES) technique. From the values of the kinetic energy releases (T), the intercharge distances (R) of the exploding doubly charged ions in their transition structures have been estimated and some structural informations about the transition states can be obtained. The collision induced reactions of the FeC10H102+ ion with Ar have been studied using MIKES, we postulate a new type of continuing reaction which may be "collisional charge separation induced dissociation".

The structures of CH5O+ from two different reactions which are protonation of CH3OH from the above two pathways possess the same structures, CH3OH2+. The value of kinetic energy release for the metastable decomposition CH2OH3+-> CH2OH+ + H-2 determined from the experiment is in good agreement with that from theoretical calculations. The transition state of above reaction were disscussed.

Effects of various concentrations of two heavy metals, namely Cd and Cu, on gametophytes of Laminaria japonica Aresch were determined by recording morphological changes of gametophytes, determining pH values and the heavy metal content of the culture solution, calculating the germination rate of sporophytes, and observing heavy metal (Cd) distribution using a fluorescence microscope. The results showed that heavy metals damaged the gametophytes, and were even lethal, and that the higher the concentration of heavy metal ions, the greater the injury to gametophytes. Gametophytes could not survive in culture solutions containing more than 100 mg/L Cd and 50 mg/L Cu and were only able to survive in culture solution containing a mixture of Cd and Cu tip to a concentration of 10 mg/L, which indicates that gametophytes have a higher tolerance to Cd than Cu and that multiple heavy metal ions in solution markedly aggravate the damage to gametophytes compared with individual heavy metal ions. With increases in the concentration of the heavy metal, the burgeoning rate of sporophytes decreased acutely, and solutions containing multiple heavy metal ions caused even more marked harm to sporophytes than solutions containing a single heavy metal ion, because most sporophytes died in mixed solutions. The pH value of the culture medium dropped immediately at the beginning (the first day) of treatment, increased over the following days, and then decreased again. The pH of culture media containing multiple heavy metal ions showed greater variation than media containing a single heavy metal ion, with the extent of the decrease in pH of culture media containing multiple ions being greatest during the last period of the experiment. With increases in the concentration of heavy metals, the capacity of gametophytes to accumulate these ions increased. The blue fluorescent light emitted by the Cd- and Cd-binding protein complex existing in gametophytes in media containing different concentrations of Cd showed clearly the distribution of the ion in gametophytes and the results obtained were consistent with distribution determined using other methods. All results of the present study showed that gametophytes of L. japonica play a remarkable role as heavy metal decontaminators, especially with regard to Cd.

Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and rotating disk electrode voltammetry have been used to study the effect of chloride ions on the dissolved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on Q235 carbon steel electrode in a 0.02 M calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)) solutions imitating the liquid phase in concrete pores. The results indicate that the cathodic process on Q235 carbon steel electrode in oxygen-saturated 0.02 M Ca(OH)(2) with different concentrations of chloride ions contain three reactions except hydrogen evolution: dissolved oxygen reduction, the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), and then the reduction of Fe(II) to Fe. The peak potential of ORR shifts to the positive direction as the chloride ion concentration increases. The oxygen molecule adsorption can be inhibited by the chloride ion adsorption, and the rate of ORR decreases as the concentration of chloride ions increases. The mechanism of ORR is changed from 2e(-) and 4e(-) reactions, occurring simultaneously, to quietly 4e(-) reaction with the increasing chloride ion concentration.

Heavy metal-bearing waste usually needs solidification/stabilization (s/s) prior to landfill to lower the leaching rate. Cement is the most adaptable binder currently available for the immobilisation of heavy metals. The selection of cements and operating parameters depends upon an understanding of chemistry of the system. This paper discusses interactions of heavy metals and cement phases in the solidification/stabilisation process. It provides a clarification of heavy metal effects on cement hydration. According to the decomposition rate of minerals, heavy metals accelerate the hydration of tricalcium silicate (C3S) and Portland cement, although they retard the precipitation of portlandite due to the reduction of pH resulted from hydrolyses of heavy metal ions. The chemical mechanism relevant to the accelerating effect of heavy metals is considered to be H+ attacks on cement phases and the precipitation of calcium heavy metal double hydroxides, which consumes calcium ions and then promotes the decomposition Of C3S. In this work, molecular models of calcium silicate hydrate gel are presented based on the examination of Si-29 solid-state magic angle spinning/nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS/NMR). This paper also reviews immobilisation mechanisms of heavy metals in hydrated cement matrices, focusing on the sorption, precipitation and chemical incorporation of cement hydration products. It is concluded that further research oil the phase development during cement hydration in the presence of heavy metals and thermodynamic modelling is needed to improve effectiveness of cement-based s/s and extend this waste management technique. The hydration of tricalcium silicate (C(3)S) in the presence of heavy metal is very important to cement-based solidification/stabilisation (s/s) of waste. In this work, tricalcium silicate pastes and aqueous suspensions doped with nitrate salts of Zn(2+), Pb(2+), Cu(2+) and Cr(3+) were examined at different ages by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (DTA/TG) and (29)Si solid-state magic angle spinning/nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS/NMR). It was found that heavy metal doping accelerated C(3)S hydration, even though Zn(2+) doping exhibited a severe retardation effect at an early period of time of C(3)S hydration. Heavy metals retarded the precipitation of portlandite due to the reduction of pH resulted from the hydrolysis of heavy metal ions during C(3)S hydration. The contents of portlandite in the control, Cr(3+)-doped, Cu(2+)-doped, Pb(2+)-doped and Zn(2+)-doped C(3)S pastes aged 28 days were 16.7, 5.5, 5.5, 5.5, and <0.7%, respectively. Heavy metals co-precipitated with calcium as double hydroxides such as (Ca(2)Cr(OH)(7).3H(2)O, Ca(2)(OH)(4)4Cu(OH)(2).2H(2)O and CaZn(2)(OH)(6).2H(2)O). These compounds were identified as crystalline phases in heavy metal doping C(3)S suspensions and amorphous phases in heavy metal doping C(3)S pastes. (29)Si NMR data confirmed that heavy metals promoted the polymerisation of C-S-H gel in 1-year-old of C(3)S pastes. The average numbers of Si in C-S-H gel for the Zn(2+)-doped, Cu(2+)-doped, Cr(3+)-doped, control, and Pb(2+)-doped C(3)S pastes were 5.86, 5.11, 3.66, 3.62, and 3.52. And the corresponding Ca/Si ratios were 1.36, 1.41, 1.56, 1.57 and 1.56, respectively. This study also revealed that the presence of heavy metal facilitated the formation of calcium carbonate during C(3)S hydration process in the presence of carbon dioxide.

We present a technique for measuring the radiative lifetimes of metastable states of negative ions that involves the use of a heavy-ion storage ring. The method has been applied to investigate the radiative decay of the np3 2P1/2 levels of Te–(n=5) and Se–(n=4) and the 3p3 2D state of Si– for which the J=3/2 and 5/2 levels were unresolved. All of these states are metastable and decay primarily by emission of E2 and M1 radiation. Multi Configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of rates for the transitions in Te– and Se– yielded lifetimes of 0.45 s and 4.7 s, respectively. The measured values agree well with these predicted values. In the case of the 2D state of Si–, however, our measurement was only able to set a lower limit on the lifetime. The upper limit of the lifetime that can be measured with our apparatus is set by how long the ions can be stored in the ring, a limit determined by the rate of collisional detachment. Our lower limit of 1 min for the lifetime of the 2D state is consistent with both the calculated lifetimes of 162 s for the 2D3/2 level and 27.3 h for the 2D5/2 level reported by O'Malley and Beck and 14.5 h and 12.5 h, respectively, from our Breit-Pauli calculations.

Particle and photon polarization phenomena occurring in collisions of relativistic ions with matter have recently attracted particular interest. Investiga- tions of the emitted characteristic x-ray and radiative electron capture radiation has been found to be a versatile tool for probing our present understanding of the dynamics of particles in extreme electromagnetic ¯elds. Owing to the progress in x-ray detector technology, in addition, accurate measurements of the linear po- larization for hard x-ray photons as well as the determination of the polarization plane became possible. This new diagnostic tool enables one today to derive in- formation about the polarization of the ion beams from the photon polarization features of the radiative electron capture process.

A potential usefulness of raw date pits as an inexpensive solid adsorbent for methylene blue (MB), copper ion (Cu2+), and cadmium ion (Cd2+) has been demonstrated in this work. This work was conducted to provide fundamental information from the study of equilibrium adsorption isotherms and to investigate the adsorption mechanisms in the adsorption of MB, Cu2+, and Cd2+ onto raw date pits. The fit of two models, namely Langmuir and Freundlich models, to experimental data obtained from the adsorption isotherms was checked. The adsorption capacities of the raw date pits towards MB and both Cu2+ and Cd2+ ions obtained from Langmuir and Freundlich models were found to be 277.8, 35.9, and 39.5 mg g(-1), respectively. Surface functional groups on the raw date pits surface substantially influence the adsorption characteristics of MB, Cu2+, and Cd2+ onto the raw date pits. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies show clear differences in both absorbances and shapes of the bands and in their locations before and after solute adsorption. Two mechanisms were observed for MB adsorption, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction, while other mechanisms were observed for Cu2+ and Cd2+. For Cu2+, binding two cellulose/lignin units together is the predominant mechanism. For Cd2+. the predominant mechanism is by binding itself using two hydroxyl groups in the cellulose/lignin unit. Absolute rate coefficients for dielectronic recombination (DR) of H-like U91+ ions have been measured. The electron-ion merged-beam technique at a heavy-ion storage ring was employed using a stochastically cooled ion beam. Thereby, the previously accessible electron-ion collision energies could be greatly extended to the range 63-90 keV. High-resolution DR spectra were measured covering all KLL and KLM resonances. For the resonance strengths, excellent agreement between relativistic theory and experiment is found only if the Breit contribution to the electron-electron interaction is included in the calculations. For the KL1/2L1/2 and KL1/2M1/2 groups the Breit contribution amounts to 44% of their total resonance strengths.
