Good morning. It is my very great pleasure to be here with you today, and to have this opportunity to visit with you about the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. I’m going to talk for just a few minutes about issues and highlights for the Institute, and then I’ve asked Dan Cotton, director of IANR’s Communications and Information Technology unit to illustrate some of the fine and innovative work being done in the Institute to benefit Nebraska.

Maxwell Arboretum Anniversary Celebration

What a pleasure it is to have this opportunity to welcome you to campus today as we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Earl G. Maxwell Arboretum. Henry Van Dyke once wrote that "He that planteth a tree ... provideth a kindness for many generations, and faces that he hath not seen shall bless him."

Sorghum Research Meeting

It is my pleasure to welcome you to East Campus this morning, and I thank you for inviting me to be here with you. I am pleased that we have this opportunity to come together to exchange information and ideas, to update on what's happening now, and to look to the future. It is important that we make and take advantage of such opportunities to communicate with each other, to learn each others' views, and to work with each other toward our common goals. I want to personally thank the people who have worked to organize this meeting and to put this morning's agenda together.

What a pleasure it is to have this opportunity to welcome you all to this thirteenth annual Agriculture at the Crossroads Conference sponsored by the Nebraska AgRelations Council and the Department of Agricultural Economics here in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln.

Good morning! On behalf of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources representatives here this morning, I want to express our very real pleasure in being with you, and our very great appreciation of all that you do. We in the Institute value the Agriculture Builders of Nebraska highly. Your support for our work and the wise counsel of ABN members has been invaluable to me personally since my arrival in Nebraska, and I know that is true of the entire Institute, as well. In fact, the thoughtful perspective and the confidential advice of the ABN Executive Committee in the recent third-round of budget cutting decisions we faced in the Institute helped me work through what we had to do in that very, very difficult round of cuts.

Association of American State Geologists 95th annual meeting

What a great pleasure to welcome you to the 95th annual meeting of the Association of American State Geologists. I truly hope you enjoy your stay the next few days here in Lincoln, our state's capitol and Nebraska's second-largest city. Mark mentioned that I'm from Texas. My family started there, our first family home in the United States, when my maternal great-grandfather immigrated to this country from Germany, to escape military conscription -- just as the Civil War broke out here. With remarkably bad timing, he landed at the port of Galveston just in time to be rounded up and sworn, under gunpoint, into the Confederacy.

Tribute to Rod Gangwish and Mark Gustafson

President Williamson, honored guests and friends, it is such a pleasure to be here with you tonight, and such a privilege to deliver this tribute to our 2004 Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement honorees, Rod Gangwish and Mark Gustafson.

Phi Beta Delta Presentation - Lawrence Bruner

A year ago I had the privilege of being inducted into Phi Beta Delta, and at that time I was invited to speak at the next induction ceremony, which it is my pleasure to do today. I am delighted to have this opportunity to congratulate our scholarship recipient, our new inductees, Peter Gleick, President of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security, and Merlyn Carlson, Director of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture and a member of the Governor's cabinet, on their honorary memberships in the society. I want to acknowledge Harriet Turner, Director of International affairs, for her fine work on behalf of the university and us all, and I want to thank all members of this society of international scholars for the important work you do, not only for Nebraska but, indeed, for our world.

Opening Comments Before Master Conservationist Presentations

It is a real pleasure to participate in this recognition program honoring the 2004 Master-Conservationists. We are grateful for the partnership with the Omaha World Herald in this unique program. In an effort to keep the program in tune with current developments in soil and waster conservation, a special committee is considering the idea of including conservation easements in the 2005 program. Some members of the committee are in the audience tonight. We appreciate the efforts of members of the Omaha World Herald, Natural Resources Districts, the USDA Natural-Resources Conservation Service and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources in carrying out this program.

IANR Recognition Luncheon

What a pleasure it is to come together here to recognize and celebrate Outstanding work of members of our IANR community. It is even more of a treat to have three reasons to celebrate today as we recognize excellence with two IANR Exemplary Service Awards, two Dinsdale Family Faculty Awards, and the IANR Team Award.

2004 Nebraska Grazing Conference

It is both my privilege and pleasure to have the opportunity this morning to welcome you to the 2004 Nebraska Grazing Conference. I am sure you are looking forward to the next two days of great topics and excellent speakers. This is the fourth year this conference has brought people together to hear, to discuss, to exchange a wide variety of ideas. Reading through the list of conference sponsors and supporters, I think how fortunate we are in Nebraska to forge and foster such productive partnerships for the good of our state.

What a pleasure it is to be here with you today at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory Open House. I grew up a country boy in Texas, and any day I get to spend in rangeland is a good day to me.

Thank you for inviting me to be here with you today. It is always such a pleasure to be asked to talk about the ways the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources benefits Nebraskans, Nebraska, and our state's economy. I am proud of the real difference our work makes in Nebraska's future and in Nebraskans' lives.

Fourth Annual Symposium in Virology

What a pleasure it is to take part in welcoming you to this Fourth Annual Symposium in Virology. Such a tremendous program lies ahead! And how pleased and proud we are that this year's symposium is a special tribute to our colleague Dr. James Van Etten, Professor of Plant Pathology in our Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, who last-year was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences.
