We present recent results on experimental micro-fabrication and numerical modeling of advanced photonic devices by means of direct writing by femtosecond laser. Transverse inscription geometry was routinely used to inscribe and modify photonic devices based on waveguiding structures. Typically, standard commercially available fibers were used as a template with a pre-fabricated waveguide. Using a direct, point-by-point inscription by infrared femtosecond laser, a range of fiber-based photonic devices was fabricated including Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) and Long Period Gratings (LPG). Waveguides with a core of a couple of microns, periodic structures, and couplers have been also fabricated in planar geometry using the same method.

The microchannelled chirped fibre Bragg grating (MCFBG) was fabricated using femtosecond laser processing and HF-etching. Intrinsical refractive-index sensitivity induced by the microchannel makes MCFBGs ideal for biochemical sensing.

We measure complex amplitude of scattered wave in the far field, and justify theoretically and numerically solution of the inverse scattering problem. This allows single-shot reconstructing of dielectric function distribution during direct femtosecond laser micro-fabrication.

The femtosecond laser modification of refractive index in amorphous Al2O3:Nd thin film prepared by rf magnetron sputtering is investigated. Modifications of the refractive index in a sample with a single Al2O3:Nd layer and in a sample composed of the Al2O3:Nd layer and SiO2 layer on the top were compared. Advantages arising from addition of the SiO2 layer are shown. The film was patterned in order to form an active waveguide. Waveguide loss and mode composition were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Spectrum and kinetics of luminescence in the region of 1.06 μm were measured.

We have observed unusual asymmetrical refractive index change as a result of femtosecond laser inscription in a crystal without center of inversion. Profile of the refractive index change exhibits sign turn within the domain of femtosecond pulse exposure. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2013.

We report the fabrication of a refractive index (RI) sensor based on a liquid core fibre Bragg grating (FBG). A micro-slot FBG was created in standard telecom optical fibre employing the tightly focused femtosecond laser inscription aided chemical etching. A micro-slot with dimensions of 5.74(h) × 125(w) × 1388.72(l) μm was engraved across the whole fibre and along 1mm long FBG which gives advantage of a relatively robust liquid core waveguide. The device performed the refractive index sensitivity up to about 742.72 nm/RIU. © 2011 Copyright Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

We present data on the development a new type of optical fibre polariser and the characterisation of its wavelength properties. The device is fashioned using a two step process. Firstly, a standard UV long period grating (LPG) with a period of 330μm is inscribed into hydrogenated SMF-28, followed by femtosecond laser ablation of a groove parallel to the fibre axis. The UV inscribed LPGs have inherently low birefringence. However, the removal of the cladding layer parallel to the location of the LPG within the fibre core (as a result the ablation) modifies the cladding modes that couple with the LPG. Furthermore, the groove breaks the fibre symmetry introducing a non-uniform stress profile across the fibre cross section leading to significant birefringence. We show that increasing the depth of the groove increases the birefringence, and this behaviour coupled with the ability to control the wavelength location of the LPGs attenuations peaks results in a polariser able to operate at almost any wavelength and birefringence. The maximum birefringence reported here as polarisation mode splitting was approximately 39±0.1nm with a polarisation loss of 10dB. © 2011 Copyright Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

Point-by-point fibre grating fabrication by femtosecond laser pulses requires tight focusing of the pulses into the core of the fibre. This condition is not easily satisfied in photonic crystal fibres (PCFs) due to the pulse scattering by the holes. In this letter, we present a numerical model of propagation of tightly focused laser beam through PCF in a typical experimental setup. We investigate impact of the numerical aperture of the beam and hole refractive index on the beam scattering and identify optimal conditions for relating the findings to the requirements of grating fabrication. The results explain and quantify recent experimental grating inscription techniques and are indicative of birefringence observed in long-period gratings written by femtosecond laser pulses. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. We report on the first demonstration of passive all-optical plasma lensing using a two-stage setup. An intense femtosecond laser accelerates electrons in a laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) to 100 MeVover millimeter length scales. By adding a second gas target behind the initial LWFAstage we introduce a robust and independently tunable plasma lens. We observe a density dependent reduction of the LWFA electron beam divergence from an initial value of 2.3 mrad, down to 1.4 mrad (rms), when the plasma lens is in operation. Such a plasma lens provides a simple and compact approach for divergence reduction well matched to the mm-scale length of the LWFA accelerator. The focusing forces are provided solely by the plasma and driven by the bunch itself only, making this a highly useful and conceptually new approach to electron beam focusing. Possible applications of this lens are not limited to laser plasma accelerators. Since no active driver is needed the passive plasma lens is also suited for high repetition rate focusing of electron bunches. Its understanding is also required for modeling the evolution of the driving particle bunch in particle driven wake field acceleration.

A novel gold coated femtosecond laser nanostructured sapphire surface – an “optical nose” - based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for detecting vapours of explosive substances was investigated. Four different nitroaromatic vapours at room temperature were tested. Sensor responses were unambiguous and showed response in the range of 0.05 – 15 uM at 25 °C. The laser fabricated substrate nanostructures produced up to an eight-fold increase in Raman signal over that observed on the unstructured portions of the substrate. This work demonstrates a simple sensing system that is compatible with commercial manufacturing practices to detect taggants in explosives which can undertake as part of an integrated security or investigative mission.

PURPOSE - To present the results of same-day topography-guided photorefractive keratectomy (TG-PRK) and corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) after intrastromal corneal ring (ISCR) implantation in patients with keratoconus. METHODS - Thirty-three patients (41 eyes) aged between 19 and 45 years were included in this prospective study. All patients underwent a femtosecond laser-enabled (Intralase FS; Abbott Medical Optics, Inc.) placement of intracorneal ring segments (Kerarings; Mediphacos, Brazil). Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and keratometry readings remained stable for 6 months. Same-day PRK and CXL was subsequently performed in all patients. RESULTS - After 12 months of completion of the procedure, mean UDVA in log of minimal angle of resolution was significantly improved (0.74±0.54-0.10±0.16); CDVA did not improve significantly but 85% of eyes maintained or gained multiple lines of CDVA; mean refraction spherical equivalent improved (from -3.03±1.98 to -0.04±0.99 D), all keratometry readings were significantly reduced, from preoperative values, but coma did not vary significantly from preoperative values. Central corneal thickness and corneal thickness at the thinnest point were significantly (P<0.0001) reduced from 519.76±29.33 and 501.87±31.50 preoperatively to 464.71±36.79 and 436.55±47.42 postoperatively, respectively. Safety and efficacy indices were 0.97 and 0.88, respectively. From 6 months up until more than 1 year of follow-up, further significant improvement was observed only for UDVA (P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS - Same-day combined TG-PRK and CXL after ISCR implantation is a safe and effective option for improving visual acuity and visual function, and it halts the progression of the keratoconus. The improvements recorded after 6 months of follow-up were maintained or improved upon 1 year after the procedure.

Nonlinear absorption and refraction phenomena in stoichiometric lithium niobate (SLN) pure and co-doped with Zn and Nd, and congruent lithium niobate (CLN) were investigated using Z-scan technique. Femtosecond laser pulses from Ti:Sapphire laser (800 nm, 110 fs pulse width and 1 kHz repetition rate) were utilized for the experiment. The process responsible for nonlinear behavior of the samples was identified to be three photon absorption (3PA). This is in agreement with the band gap energies of the samples obtained from the linear absorption cut off and the slope of the plot of Ln(1 − TOA) vs. Ln(I0) using Sutherland’s theory (s = 2.1, for 3PA). The nonlinear refractive index (n2) of Zn doped samples was found to be lower than that of pure samples. Our experiments show that there exists a correlation between the nonlinear properties and the stoichiometry of the samples. The values of n2 fall into the same range as those obtained for the materials of similar band gap.

We study the generation of coherent optical phonons in spin-frustrated pyrochlore single crystals Dy2Ti2O7, Gd2Ti2O7, and Tb2Ti2O7 using femtosecond laser pulses (65 fs, 1.57 eV) in degenerate time-resolved transmission experiments as a function of temperature from 4 to 296 K. At 4 K, two coherent phonons are observed at similar to 5.3 THz (5.0 THz) and similar to 9.3 THz (9.4 THz) for Dy2Ti2O7 (Gd2Ti2O7), whereas three coherent phonons are generated at similar to 5.0, 8.6, and 9.7 THz for Tb2Ti2O7. In the case of spin-ice Dy2Ti2O7, a clear discontinuity is observed in the linewidths of both the coherent phonons as well as in the phase of lower-energy coherent phonon mode, indicating a subtle structural change at 110 K. Another important observation is a phase difference of pi between the modes in all the samples, thus suggesting that the driving forces behind the generation of these modes could be different in nature, unlike a purely impulsive or displacive mechanism.

There has been much interest recently in the discovery of thermally induced magnetisation switching using femtosecond laser excitation, where a ferrimagnetic system can be switched deterministically without an applied magnetic field. Experimental results suggest that the reversal occurs due to intrinsic material properties, but so far the microscopic mechanism responsible for reversal has not been identified. Using computational and analytic methods we show that the switching is caused by the excitation of two-magnon bound states, the properties of which are dependent on material factors. This discovery allows us to accurately predict the onset of switching and the identification of this mechanism will allow new classes of materials to be identified or designed for memory devices in the THz regime.
