In this paper we report some of the experimental results that can be obtained in the field of hybrid optical bistable devices when liquid crystals are employed as non linear materials. The advantages with respect to other materials are the very low voltages and power needed, compatibles with I.C.'s levels.

A novel temperature sensor based on nematic liquid crystal permittivity as a sensing magnitude, is presented. This sensor consists of a specific micrometric structure that gives considerable advantages from other previous related liquid crystal (LC) sensors. The analytical study reveals that permittivity change with temperature is introduced in a hyperbolic cosine function, increasing the sensitivity term considerably. The experimental data has been obtained for ranges from −6 °C to 100 °C. Despite this, following the LC datasheet, theoretical ranges from −40 °C to 109 °C could be achieved. These results have revealed maximum sensitivities of 33 mVrms/°C for certain temperature ranges; three times more than of most silicon temperature sensors. As it was predicted by the analytical study, the micrometric size of the proposed structure produces a high output voltage. Moreover the voltage’s sensitivity to temperature response can be controlled by the applied voltage. This response allows temperature measurements to be carried out without any amplification or conditioning circuitry, with very low power consumption.

A novel tunable liquid crystal microaxicon array is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed structure is capable of generating tunable axicons (thousands of elements) of micrometric size, with simple control (four control voltages) and low voltage, and is totally reconfigurable. Depending on the applied voltages, control over the diameter, as well as the effective wedge angle, can be achieved. Controls over the diameter ranging from 107 to 77 μm have been demonstrated. In addition, a control over the phase profile tunability, from 12π to 24π radians, has been demonstrated. This result modifies the effective cone angle. The diameter tunability, as well the effective cone angle, results in a control over the nondiffractive Bessel beam distance. The RMS wavefront deviation from the ideal axicon is only λ∕3. The proposed device has several advantages over the existing microaxicon arrays, including being simple having a low cost. The device could contribute to developing new applications and to reducing the fabrication costs of current devices.

La fiabilidad está pasando a ser el principal problema de los circuitos integrados según la tecnología desciende por debajo de los 22nm. Pequeñas imperfecciones en la fabricación de los dispositivos dan lugar ahora a importantes diferencias aleatorias en sus características eléctricas, que han de ser tenidas en cuenta durante la fase de diseño. Los nuevos procesos y materiales requeridos para la fabricación de dispositivos de dimensiones tan reducidas están dando lugar a diferentes efectos que resultan finalmente en un incremento del consumo estático, o una mayor vulnerabilidad frente a radiación. Las memorias SRAM son ya la parte más vulnerable de un sistema electrónico, no solo por representar más de la mitad del área de los SoCs y microprocesadores actuales, sino también porque las variaciones de proceso les afectan de forma crítica, donde el fallo de una única célula afecta a la memoria entera. Esta tesis aborda los diferentes retos que presenta el diseño de memorias SRAM en las tecnologías más pequeñas. En un escenario de aumento de la variabilidad, se consideran problemas como el consumo de energía, el diseño teniendo en cuenta efectos de la tecnología a bajo nivel o el endurecimiento frente a radiación. En primer lugar, dado el aumento de la variabilidad de los dispositivos pertenecientes a los nodos tecnológicos más pequeños, así como a la aparición de nuevas fuentes de variabilidad por la inclusión de nuevos dispositivos y la reducción de sus dimensiones, la precisión del modelado de dicha variabilidad es crucial. Se propone en la tesis extender el método de inyectores, que modela la variabilidad a nivel de circuito, abstrayendo sus causas físicas, añadiendo dos nuevas fuentes para modelar la pendiente sub-umbral y el DIBL, de creciente importancia en la tecnología FinFET. Los dos nuevos inyectores propuestos incrementan la exactitud de figuras de mérito a diferentes niveles de abstracción del diseño electrónico: a nivel de transistor, de puerta y de circuito. El error cuadrático medio al simular métricas de estabilidad y prestaciones de células SRAM se reduce un mínimo de 1,5 veces y hasta un máximo de 7,5 a la vez que la estimación de la probabilidad de fallo se mejora en varios ordenes de magnitud. El diseño para bajo consumo es una de las principales aplicaciones actuales dada la creciente importancia de los dispositivos móviles dependientes de baterías. Es igualmente necesario debido a las importantes densidades de potencia en los sistemas actuales, con el fin de reducir su disipación térmica y sus consecuencias en cuanto al envejecimiento. El método tradicional de reducir la tensión de alimentación para reducir el consumo es problemático en el caso de las memorias SRAM dado el creciente impacto de la variabilidad a bajas tensiones. Se propone el diseño de una célula que usa valores negativos en la bit-line para reducir los fallos de escritura según se reduce la tensión de alimentación principal. A pesar de usar una segunda fuente de alimentación para la tensión negativa en la bit-line, el diseño propuesto consigue reducir el consumo hasta en un 20 % comparado con una célula convencional. Una nueva métrica, el hold trip point se ha propuesto para prevenir nuevos tipos de fallo debidos al uso de tensiones negativas, así como un método alternativo para estimar la velocidad de lectura, reduciendo el número de simulaciones necesarias. Según continúa la reducción del tamaño de los dispositivos electrónicos, se incluyen nuevos mecanismos que permiten facilitar el proceso de fabricación, o alcanzar las prestaciones requeridas para cada nueva generación tecnológica. Se puede citar como ejemplo el estrés compresivo o extensivo aplicado a los fins en tecnologías FinFET, que altera la movilidad de los transistores fabricados a partir de dichos fins. Los efectos de estos mecanismos dependen mucho del layout, la posición de unos transistores afecta a los transistores colindantes y pudiendo ser el efecto diferente en diferentes tipos de transistores. Se propone el uso de una célula SRAM complementaria que utiliza dispositivos pMOS en los transistores de paso, así reduciendo la longitud de los fins de los transistores nMOS y alargando los de los pMOS, extendiéndolos a las células vecinas y hasta los límites de la matriz de células. Considerando los efectos del STI y estresores de SiGe, el diseño propuesto mejora los dos tipos de transistores, mejorando las prestaciones de la célula SRAM complementaria en más de un 10% para una misma probabilidad de fallo y un mismo consumo estático, sin que se requiera aumentar el área. Finalmente, la radiación ha sido un problema recurrente en la electrónica para aplicaciones espaciales, pero la reducción de las corrientes y tensiones de los dispositivos actuales los está volviendo vulnerables al ruido generado por radiación, incluso a nivel de suelo. Pese a que tecnologías como SOI o FinFET reducen la cantidad de energía colectada por el circuito durante el impacto de una partícula, las importantes variaciones de proceso en los nodos más pequeños va a afectar su inmunidad frente a la radiación. Se demuestra que los errores inducidos por radiación pueden aumentar hasta en un 40 % en el nodo de 7nm cuando se consideran las variaciones de proceso, comparado con el caso nominal. Este incremento es de una magnitud mayor que la mejora obtenida mediante el diseño de células de memoria específicamente endurecidas frente a radiación, sugiriendo que la reducción de la variabilidad representaría una mayor mejora. ABSTRACT Reliability is becoming the main concern on integrated circuit as the technology goes beyond 22nm. Small imperfections in the device manufacturing result now in important random differences of the devices at electrical level which must be dealt with during the design. New processes and materials, required to allow the fabrication of the extremely short devices, are making new effects appear resulting ultimately on increased static power consumption, or higher vulnerability to radiation SRAMs have become the most vulnerable part of electronic systems, not only they account for more than half of the chip area of nowadays SoCs and microprocessors, but they are critical as soon as different variation sources are regarded, with failures in a single cell making the whole memory fail. This thesis addresses the different challenges that SRAM design has in the smallest technologies. In a common scenario of increasing variability, issues like energy consumption, design aware of the technology and radiation hardening are considered. First, given the increasing magnitude of device variability in the smallest nodes, as well as new sources of variability appearing as a consequence of new devices and shortened lengths, an accurate modeling of the variability is crucial. We propose to extend the injectors method that models variability at circuit level, abstracting its physical sources, to better model sub-threshold slope and drain induced barrier lowering that are gaining importance in FinFET technology. The two new proposed injectors bring an increased accuracy of figures of merit at different abstraction levels of electronic design, at transistor, gate and circuit levels. The mean square error estimating performance and stability metrics of SRAM cells is reduced by at least 1.5 and up to 7.5 while the yield estimation is improved by orders of magnitude. Low power design is a major constraint given the high-growing market of mobile devices that run on battery. It is also relevant because of the increased power densities of nowadays systems, in order to reduce the thermal dissipation and its impact on aging. The traditional approach of reducing the voltage to lower the energy consumption if challenging in the case of SRAMs given the increased impact of process variations at low voltage supplies. We propose a cell design that makes use of negative bit-line write-assist to overcome write failures as the main supply voltage is lowered. Despite using a second power source for the negative bit-line, the design achieves an energy reduction up to 20% compared to a conventional cell. A new metric, the hold trip point has been introduced to deal with new sources of failures to cells using a negative bit-line voltage, as well as an alternative method to estimate cell speed, requiring less simulations. With the continuous reduction of device sizes, new mechanisms need to be included to ease the fabrication process and to meet the performance targets of the successive nodes. As example we can consider the compressive or tensile strains included in FinFET technology, that alter the mobility of the transistors made out of the concerned fins. The effects of these mechanisms are very dependent on the layout, with transistor being affected by their neighbors, and different types of transistors being affected in a different way. We propose to use complementary SRAM cells with pMOS pass-gates in order to reduce the fin length of nMOS devices and achieve long uncut fins for the pMOS devices when the cell is included in its corresponding array. Once Shallow Trench isolation and SiGe stressors are considered the proposed design improves both kinds of transistor, boosting the performance of complementary SRAM cells by more than 10% for a same failure probability and static power consumption, with no area overhead. While radiation has been a traditional concern in space electronics, the small currents and voltages used in the latest nodes are making them more vulnerable to radiation-induced transient noise, even at ground level. Even if SOI or FinFET technologies reduce the amount of energy transferred from the striking particle to the circuit, the important process variation that the smallest nodes will present will affect their radiation hardening capabilities. We demonstrate that process variations can increase the radiation-induced error rate by up to 40% in the 7nm node compared to the nominal case. This increase is higher than the improvement achieved by radiation-hardened cells suggesting that the reduction of process variations would bring a higher improvement.

The search for new energy models arises as a necessity to have a sustainable power supply. The inclusion of distributed generation sources (DG) allows to reduce the cost of facilities, increase the security of the grid or alleviate problems of congestion through the redistribution of power flows. In remote microgrids it is needed in a particular way a safe and reliable supply, which can cover the demand for a low cost; due to this, distributed generation is an alternative that is being widely introduced in these grids. But the remote microgrids are especially weak grids because of their small size, low voltage level, reduced network mesh and distribution lines with a high ratio R/X. This ratio affects the coupling between grid voltages and phase shifts, and stability becomes an issue of greater importance than in interconnected systems. To ensure the appropriate behavior of generation sources inserted in remote microgrids -and, in general, any electrical equipment-, it is essential to have devices for testing and certification. These devices must, not only faithfully reproduce disturbances occurring in remote microgrids, but also to behave against the equipment under test (EUT) as a real weak grid. This also makes the device commercially competitive. To meet these objectives and based on the aforementioned, it has been designed, built and tested a voltage disturbances generator, in order to provide a simple, versatile, full and easily scalable device to manufacturers and laboratories in the sector.

Las Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) SRAM se construyen sobre una memoria de configuración de tecnología RAM Estática (SRAM). Presentan múltiples características que las hacen muy interesantes para diseñar sistemas empotrados complejos. En primer lugar presentan un coste no-recurrente de ingeniería (NRE) bajo, ya que los elementos lógicos y de enrutado están pre-implementados (el diseño de usuario define su conexionado). También, a diferencia de otras tecnologías de FPGA, pueden ser reconfiguradas (incluso en campo) un número ilimitado de veces. Es más, las FPGAs SRAM de Xilinx soportan Reconfiguración Parcial Dinámica (DPR), la cual permite reconfigurar la FPGA sin interrumpir la aplicación. Finalmente, presentan una alta densidad de lógica, una alta capacidad de procesamiento y un rico juego de macro-bloques. Sin embargo, un inconveniente de esta tecnología es su susceptibilidad a la radiación ionizante, la cual aumenta con el grado de integración (geometrías más pequeñas, menores tensiones y mayores frecuencias). Esta es una precupación de primer nivel para aplicaciones en entornos altamente radiativos y con requisitos de alta confiabilidad. Este fenómeno conlleva una degradación a largo plazo y también puede inducir fallos instantáneos, los cuales pueden ser reversibles o producir daños irreversibles. En las FPGAs SRAM, los fallos inducidos por radiación pueden aparecer en en dos capas de arquitectura diferentes, que están físicamente superpuestas en el dado de silicio. La Capa de Aplicación (o A-Layer) contiene el hardware definido por el usuario, y la Capa de Configuración contiene la memoria de configuración y la circuitería de soporte. Los fallos en cualquiera de estas capas pueden hacer fracasar el sistema, lo cual puede ser ás o menos tolerable dependiendo de los requisitos de confiabilidad del sistema. En el caso general, estos fallos deben gestionados de alguna manera. Esta tesis trata sobre la gestión de fallos en FPGAs SRAM a nivel de sistema, en el contexto de sistemas empotrados autónomos y confiables operando en un entorno radiativo. La tesis se centra principalmente en aplicaciones espaciales, pero los mismos principios pueden aplicarse a aplicaciones terrenas. Las principales diferencias entre ambas son el nivel de radiación y la posibilidad de mantenimiento. Las diferentes técnicas para la gestión de fallos en A-Layer y C-Layer son clasificados, y sus implicaciones en la confiabilidad del sistema son analizados. Se proponen varias arquitecturas tanto para Gestores de Fallos de una capa como de doble-capa. Para estos últimos se propone una arquitectura novedosa, flexible y versátil. Gestiona las dos capas concurrentemente de manera coordinada, y permite equilibrar el nivel de redundancia y la confiabilidad. Con el objeto de validar técnicas de gestión de fallos dinámicas, se desarrollan dos diferentes soluciones. La primera es un entorno de simulación para Gestores de Fallos de C-Layer, basado en SystemC como lenguaje de modelado y como simulador basado en eventos. Este entorno y su metodología asociada permite explorar el espacio de diseño del Gestor de Fallos, desacoplando su diseño del desarrollo de la FPGA objetivo. El entorno incluye modelos tanto para la C-Layer de la FPGA como para el Gestor de Fallos, los cuales pueden interactuar a diferentes niveles de abstracción (a nivel de configuration frames y a nivel físico JTAG o SelectMAP). El entorno es configurable, escalable y versátil, e incluye capacidades de inyección de fallos. Los resultados de simulación para algunos escenarios son presentados y comentados. La segunda es una plataforma de validación para Gestores de Fallos de FPGAs Xilinx Virtex. La plataforma hardware aloja tres Módulos de FPGA Xilinx Virtex-4 FX12 y dos Módulos de Unidad de Microcontrolador (MCUs) de 32-bits de propósito general. Los Módulos MCU permiten prototipar Gestores de Fallos de C-Layer y A-Layer basados en software. Cada Módulo FPGA implementa un enlace de A-Layer Ethernet (a través de un switch Ethernet) con uno de los Módulos MCU, y un enlace de C-Layer JTAG con el otro. Además, ambos Módulos MCU intercambian comandos y datos a través de un enlace interno tipo UART. Al igual que para el entorno de simulación, se incluyen capacidades de inyección de fallos. Los resultados de pruebas para algunos escenarios son también presentados y comentados. En resumen, esta tesis cubre el proceso completo desde la descripción de los fallos FPGAs SRAM inducidos por radiación, pasando por la identificación y clasificación de técnicas de gestión de fallos, y por la propuesta de arquitecturas de Gestores de Fallos, para finalmente validarlas por simulación y pruebas. El trabajo futuro está relacionado sobre todo con la implementación de Gestores de Fallos de Sistema endurecidos para radiación. ABSTRACT SRAM-based Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are built on Static RAM (SRAM) technology configuration memory. They present a number of features that make them very convenient for building complex embedded systems. First of all, they benefit from low Non-Recurrent Engineering (NRE) costs, as the logic and routing elements are pre-implemented (user design defines their connection). Also, as opposed to other FPGA technologies, they can be reconfigured (even in the field) an unlimited number of times. Moreover, Xilinx SRAM-based FPGAs feature Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR), which allows to partially reconfigure the FPGA without disrupting de application. Finally, they feature a high logic density, high processing capability and a rich set of hard macros. However, one limitation of this technology is its susceptibility to ionizing radiation, which increases with technology scaling (smaller geometries, lower voltages and higher frequencies). This is a first order concern for applications in harsh radiation environments and requiring high dependability. Ionizing radiation leads to long term degradation as well as instantaneous faults, which can in turn be reversible or produce irreversible damage. In SRAM-based FPGAs, radiation-induced faults can appear at two architectural layers, which are physically overlaid on the silicon die. The Application Layer (or A-Layer) contains the user-defined hardware, and the Configuration Layer (or C-Layer) contains the (volatile) configuration memory and its support circuitry. Faults at either layers can imply a system failure, which may be more ore less tolerated depending on the dependability requirements. In the general case, such faults must be managed in some way. This thesis is about managing SRAM-based FPGA faults at system level, in the context of autonomous and dependable embedded systems operating in a radiative environment. The focus is mainly on space applications, but the same principles can be applied to ground applications. The main differences between them are the radiation level and the possibility for maintenance. The different techniques for A-Layer and C-Layer fault management are classified and their implications in system dependability are assessed. Several architectures are proposed, both for single-layer and dual-layer Fault Managers. For the latter, a novel, flexible and versatile architecture is proposed. It manages both layers concurrently in a coordinated way, and allows balancing redundancy level and dependability. For the purpose of validating dynamic fault management techniques, two different solutions are developed. The first one is a simulation framework for C-Layer Fault Managers, based on SystemC as modeling language and event-driven simulator. This framework and its associated methodology allows exploring the Fault Manager design space, decoupling its design from the target FPGA development. The framework includes models for both the FPGA C-Layer and for the Fault Manager, which can interact at different abstraction levels (at configuration frame level and at JTAG or SelectMAP physical level). The framework is configurable, scalable and versatile, and includes fault injection capabilities. Simulation results for some scenarios are presented and discussed. The second one is a validation platform for Xilinx Virtex FPGA Fault Managers. The platform hosts three Xilinx Virtex-4 FX12 FPGA Modules and two general-purpose 32-bit Microcontroller Unit (MCU) Modules. The MCU Modules allow prototyping software-based CLayer and A-Layer Fault Managers. Each FPGA Module implements one A-Layer Ethernet link (through an Ethernet switch) with one of the MCU Modules, and one C-Layer JTAG link with the other. In addition, both MCU Modules exchange commands and data over an internal UART link. Similarly to the simulation framework, fault injection capabilities are implemented. Test results for some scenarios are also presented and discussed. In summary, this thesis covers the whole process from describing the problem of radiationinduced faults in SRAM-based FPGAs, then identifying and classifying fault management techniques, then proposing Fault Manager architectures and finally validating them by simulation and test. The proposed future work is mainly related to the implementation of radiation-hardened System Fault Managers.

El trabajo contenido en esta tesis doctoral está encuadrado en el desarrollo de antenas reconfigurables electrónicamente capaces de proporcionar prestaciones competitivas a las aplicaciones cada vez más comunes que operan a frecuencias superiores a 60 GHz. En concreto, esta tesis se centra en el estudio, diseño, e implementación de las antenas reflectarray, a las que se introduce la tecnología de cristal líquido como elemento característico con el que se consigue reconfigurabilidad de haz de forma electrónica. Desde un punto de vista muy general, se puede describir un cristal líquido como un material cuya permitividad eléctrica es variable y controlada por una excitación externa, que generalmente suele corresponderse con un campo eléctrico quasi-estático (AC). Las antenas reflectarray de cristal líquido se han escogido como objeto de estudio por varias razones. La primera de ellas tiene que ver con las ventajas que los reflectarrays, y en especial aquellos realizados en configuración planar, proporcionan con respecto a otras antenas de alta ganancia como los reflectores o los “phased-arrays”. En los reflectarrays, la alimentación a través de una fuente primaria común (característica de reflectores) y el elevado número de grados de libertad de las celdas que los componen (característica de arrays) hacen que estas antenas puedan proporcionar prestaciones eléctricas iguales o mejores que las anteriores, a un coste más reducido y con estructuras de antena más compactas. La segunda razón radica en la flexibilidad que ofrece el cristal líquido a ser confinado y polarizado en recintos de geometría variada, como consecuencia de su fluidez (propiedad de los líquidos). Por ello, la tecnología de cristal líquido permite que el propio elemento reconfigurable en las celdas de reflectarray se adapte a la configuración planar de manera que en sí mismo, el cristal líquido sea una o varias de las capas características de esta configuración. Esto simplifica de forma drástica la estructura y la fabricación de este tipo de antenas, incluso si se comparan con reflectarrays reconfigurables basados en otras tecnologías como diodos, MEMS, etc. Por tanto, su coste y desarrollo es muy reducido, lo que hace que se puedan fabricar reflectarrays reconfigurables eléctricamente grandes, a bajo coste, y en producción elevada. Un ejemplo claro de una estructura similar, y que ha tenido éxito comercial, son las pantallas de cristal líquido. La tercera razón reside en el hecho de que el cristal líquido es, hasta la fecha, de las pocas tecnologías capaces de ofrecer reconfigurabilidad del haz a frecuencias superiores a 60 GHz. De hecho, el cristal líquido permite reconfigurabilidad en un amplio margen de frecuencias, que va desde DC a frecuencias del espectro visible, incluyendo las microondas y los THz. Otras tecnologías, como los materiales ferroeléctricos, el grafeno o la tecnología CMOS “on chip” permiten también conmutar el haz en estas frecuencias. Sin embargo, la tecnología CMOS tiene un elevado coste y actualmente está limitada a frecuencias inferiores a 150 GHz, y aunque los materiales ferroeléctricos o el grafeno puedan conmutar a frecuencias más altas y en un rango más amplio, tienen serias dificultades que los hacen aún inmaduros. En el caso de los materiales ferroeléctricos, los elevados voltajes para conmutar el material los hacen poco atractivos, mientras que en el caso del grafeno, su modelado aún está en discusión, y todavía no se han arrojado resultados experimentales que validen su idoneidad. Estas tres razones hacen que los reflectarrays basados en cristal líquido sean atractivos para multitud de aplicaciones de haz reconfigurable a frecuencias superiores a 60 GHz. Aplicaciones como radar de escaneo de imágenes de alta resolución, espectroscopia molecular, radiómetros para observación atmosférica, o comunicaciones inalámbricas de alta frecuencia (WiGig) son algunas de ellas. La tesis está estructurada en tres partes. En la primera de ellas se describen las características más comunes de los cristales líquidos, centrándonos en detalle en aquellas propiedades ofrecidas por este material en fase nemática. En concreto, se estudiará la anisotropía dieléctrica (Ae) de los cristales líquidos uniaxiales, que son los que se emplean en esta tesis, definida como la diferencia entre la permitividad paralela (£//) y la perpendicular (e±): Ae = e,, - e±. También se estudiará la variación de este parámetro (Ae) con la frecuencia, y el modelado electromagnético macroscópico más general que, extraído a partir de aquella, permite describir el cristal líquido para cada tensión de polarización en celdas de geometría planar. Este modelo es de suma importancia para garantizar precisión en el desfasaje proporcionado por las diferentes celdas reconfigurables para reflectarrays que se describirán en la siguiente parte de la tesis. La segunda parte de la tesis se centra en el diseño de celdas reflectarray resonantes basadas en cristal líquido. La razón por la que se escogen estos tipos de celdas reside en el hecho de que son las únicas capaces de proporcionar rangos de fase elevados ante la reducida anisotropía dieléctrica que ofrecen los cristales líquidos. El objetivo de esta parte trata, por tanto, de obtener estructuras de celdas reflectarray que sean capaces de proporcionar buenas prestaciones eléctricas a nivel de antena, mejorando sustancialmente las prestaciones de las celdas reportadas en el estado del arte, así como de desarrollar una herramienta de diseño general para aquellas. Para ello, se estudian las prestaciones eléctricas de diferentes tipos de elementos resonantes de cristal líquido que van, desde el más sencillo, que ha limitado el estado de la técnica hasta el desarrollo de esta tesis y que está formado por un sólo resonador, a elementos que constan de varios resonadores (multi-resonantes) y que pueden ser monocapa o multicapa. En un primer paso, el procedimiento de diseño de estas estructuras hace uso de un modelo convencional de cristal líquido que ha venido siendo usado en el estado del arte para este tipo de celdas, y que considera el cristal líquido como un material homogéneo e isótropo cuya permitividad varía entre (e/7) y (e±). Sin embargo, en esta parte de la tesis se demuestra que dicho modelado no es suficiente para describir de forma genérica el comportamiento del cristal líquido en las celdas tipo reflectarray. En la tesis se proponen procedimientos más exactos para el análisis y diseño basados en un modelo más general que define el cristal líquido como un material anisótropo e inhomogeneo en tres dimensiones, y se ha implementado una técnica que permite optimizar celdas multi-resonantes de forma eficiente para conseguir elevadas prestaciones en cuanto a ancho de banda, rango de fase, pérdidas, o sensibilidad al ángulo de incidencia. Los errores cometidos en el uso del modelado convencional a nivel de celda (amplitud y fase) se han analizado para varias geometrías, usando medidas de varios prototipos de antena que usan un cristal líquido real a frecuencias superiores a 100 GHz. Las medidas se han realizado en entorno periódico mediante un banco cuasi-óptico, que ha sido diseñado especialmente para este fin. Uno de estos prototipos se ha optimizado a 100 GHz para conseguir un ancho de banda relativamente elevado (10%), pérdidas reducidas, un rango de fase mayor de 360º, baja sensibilidad al ángulo de incidencia, y baja influencia de la inhomogeneidad transversal del cristal líquido en la celda. Estas prestaciones a nivel de celda superan de forma clara aquellas conseguidas por otros elementos que se han reportado en la literatura, de manera que dicho prototipo se ha usado en la última parte de la tesis para realizar diversas antenas de barrido. Finalmente, en esta parte se presenta una estrategia de caracterización de la anisotropía macroscópica a partir de medidas de los elementos de reflectarray diseñados en banco cuasi-óptico, obteniendo resultados tanto en las frecuencias de interés en RF como en AC, y comparándolas con aquellas obtenidas mediante otros métodos. La tercera parte de la tesis consiste en el estudio, diseño, fabricación y medida de antenas reconfigurables basadas en cristal líquido en configuraciones complejas. En reflectarrays pasivos, el procedimiento de diseño de la antena se limita únicamente al ajuste en cada celda de la antena de las dimensiones de las metalizaciones que se emplean para el control de fase, mediante procesos de optimización bien conocidos. Sin embargo, en el caso de reflectarrays reconfigurables basados en cristal líquido, resulta necesario un paso adicional, que consiste en calcular de forma adecuada las tensiones de control en cada celda del reflectarray para configurar la fase requerida en cada una de ellas, así como diseñar la estructura y los circuitos de control que permitan direccionar a cada elemento su tensión correspondiente. La síntesis de tensiones es por tanto igual o más importante que el diseño de la geometría de las celdas, puesto que éstas son las que están directamente relacionadas con la fase. En el estado del arte, existen varias estrategias de síntesis de tensiones que se basan en la caracterización experimental de la curva de fase respecto al voltaje. Sin embargo, esta caracterización sólo puede hacerse a un solo ángulo de incidencia y para unas determinadas dimensiones de celda, lo que produce que las tensiones sintetizadas sean diferentes de las adecuadas, y en definitiva que se alcancen errores de fase mayores de 70º. De esta forma, hasta la fecha, las prestaciones a nivel de antena que se han conseguido son reducidas en cuanto a ancho de banda, rango de escaneo o nivel de lóbulos secundarios. En esta última parte de la tesis, se introduce una nueva estrategia de síntesis de tensiones que es capaz de predecir mediante simulaciones, y con alta precisión, las tensiones que deben introducirse en cada celda teniendo en cuenta su ángulo de incidencia, sus dimensiones, la frecuencia, así como la señal de polarización definida por su frecuencia y forma de onda AC. Esta estrategia se basa en modelar cada uno de los estados de permitividad del cristal líquido como un sustrato anisótropo con inhomogeneidad longitudinal (1D), o en ciertos casos, como un tensor equivalente homogéneo. La precisión de ambos modelos electromagnéticos también se discute. Con el objetivo de obtener una herramienta eficiente de cálculo de tensiones, también se ha escrito e implementado una herramienta de análisis basada en el Método de los Momentos en el Dominio Espectral (SD-MoM) para sustratos estratificados anisótropos, que se usa en cada iteración del procedimiento de síntesis para analizar cada una de las celdas de la antena. La síntesis de tensiones se ha diseñado además para reducir al máximo el efecto del rizado de amplitud en el diagrama de radiación, que es característico en los reflectarrays que están formados por celdas con pérdidas elevadas, lo que en sí, supone un avance adicional para la obtención de mejores prestaciones de antena. Para el cálculo de los diagramas de radiación empleados en el procedimiento de síntesis, se asume un análisis elemento a elemento considerando periodicidad local, y se propone el uso de un método capaz de modelar el campo incidente de forma que se elimine la limitación de la periodicidad local en la excitación. Una vez definida la estrategia adecuada de cálculo de las tensiones a aplicar al cristal líquido en cada celda, la estructura de direccionamiento de las mismas en la antena, y diseñados los circuitos de control, se diseñan, fabrican y miden dos prototipos diferentes de antena de barrido electrónico a 100 GHz usando las celdas anteriormente presentadas. El primero de estos prototipos es un reflectarray en configuración “single offset” con capacidad de escaneo en un plano (elevación o azimut). Aunque previamente se realizan diseños de antenas de barrido en 2D a varias frecuencias en el rango de milimétricas y sub-milimétricas, y se proponen ciertas estrategias de direccionamiento que permiten conseguir este objetivo, se desarrolla el prototipo con direccionamiento en una dimensión con el fin de reducir el número de controles y posibles errores de fabricación, y así también validar la herramienta de diseño. Para un tamaño medio de apertura (con un numero de filas y columnas entre 30 y 50 elementos, lo que significa un reflectarray con un número de elementos superior a 900), la configuración “single offset” proporciona rangos de escaneo elevados, y ganancias que pueden oscilar entre los 20 y 30 dBi. En concreto, el prototipo medido proporciona un haz de barrido en un rango angular de 55º, en el que el nivel de lóbulos secundarios (SLL) permanece mejor de -13 dB en un ancho de banda de un 8%. La ganancia máxima es de 19.4 dBi. Estas prestaciones superan de forma clara aquellas conseguidas por otros autores. El segundo prototipo se corresponde con una antena de doble reflector que usa el reflectarray de cristal líquido como sub-reflector para escanear el haz en un plano (elevación o azimut). El objetivo básico de esta geometría es obtener mayores ganancias que en el reflectarray “single offset” con una estructura más compacta, aunque a expensas de reducir el rango de barrido. En concreto, se obtiene una ganancia máxima de 35 dBi, y un rango de barrido de 12º. Los procedimientos de síntesis de tensiones y de diseño de las estructuras de las celdas forman, en su conjunto, una herramienta completa de diseño precisa y eficiente de antenas reflectarray reconfigurables basados en cristales líquidos. Dicha herramienta se ha validado mediante el diseño, la fabricación y la medida de los prototipos anteriormente citados a 100 GHz, que consiguen algo nunca alcanzado anteriormente en la investigación de este tipo de antenas: unas prestaciones competitivas y una predicción excelente de los resultados. El procedimiento es general, y por tanto se puede usar a cualquier frecuencia en la que el cristal líquido ofrezca anisotropía dieléctrica, incluidos los THz. Los prototipos desarrollados en esta tesis doctoral suponen también unas de las primeras antenas de barrido real a frecuencias superiores a 100 GHz. En concreto, la antena de doble reflector para escaneo de haz es la primera antena reconfigurable electrónicamente a frecuencias superiores a 60 GHz que superan los 25 dBi de ganancia, siendo a su vez la primera antena de doble reflector que contiene un reflectarray reconfigurable como sub-reflector. Finalmente, se proponen ciertas mejoras que aún deben se deben realizar para hacer que estas antenas puedan ser un producto completamente desarrollado y competitivo en el mercado. ABSTRACT The work presented in this thesis is focused on the development of electronically reconfigurable antennas that are able to provide competitive electrical performance to the increasingly common applications operating at frequencies above 60 GHz. Specifically, this thesis presents the study, design, and implementation of reflectarray antennas, which incorporate liquid crystal (LC) materials to scan or reconfigure the beam electronically. From a general point of view, a liquid crystal can be defined as a material whose dielectric permittivity is variable and can be controlled with an external excitation, which usually corresponds with a quasi-static electric field (AC). By changing the dielectric permittivity at each cell that makes up the reflectarray, the phase shift on the aperture is controlled, so that a prescribed radiation pattern can be configured. Liquid Crystal-based reflectarrays have been chosen for several reasons. The first has to do with the advantages provided by the reflectarray antenna with respect to other high gain antennas, such as reflectors or phased arrays. The RF feeding in reflectarrays is achieved by using a common primary source (as in reflectors). This arrangement and the large number of degrees of freedom provided by the cells that make up the reflectarray (as in arrays), allow these antennas to provide a similar or even better electrical performance than other low profile antennas (reflectors and arrays), but assuming a more reduced cost and compactness. The second reason is the flexibility of the liquid crystal to be confined in an arbitrary geometry due to its fluidity (property of liquids). Therefore, the liquid crystal is able to adapt to a planar geometry so that it is one or more of the typical layers of this configuration. This simplifies drastically both the structure and manufacture of this type of antenna, even when compared with reconfigurable reflectarrays based on other technologies, such as diodes MEMS, etc. Therefore, the cost of developing this type of antenna is very small, which means that electrically large reconfigurable reflectarrays could be manufactured assuming low cost and greater productions. A paradigmatic example of a similar structure is the liquid crystal panel, which has already been commercialized successfully. The third reason lies in the fact that, at present, the liquid crystal is one of the few technologies capable of providing switching capabilities at frequencies above 60 GHz. In fact, the liquid crystal allows its permittivity to be switched in a wide range of frequencies, which are from DC to the visible spectrum, including microwaves and THz. Other technologies, such as ferroelectric materials, graphene or CMOS "on chip" technology also allow the beam to be switched at these frequencies. However, CMOS technology is expensive and is currently limited to frequencies below 150 GHz, and although ferroelectric materials or graphene can switch at higher frequencies and in a wider range, they have serious difficulties that make them immature. Ferroelectric materials involve the use of very high voltages to switch the material, making them unattractive, whereas the electromagnetic modelling of the graphene is still under discussion, so that the experimental results of devices based on this latter technology have not been reported yet. These three reasons make LC-based reflectarrays attractive for many applications that involve the use of electronically reconfigurable beams at frequencies beyond 60 GHz. Applications such as high resolution imaging radars, molecular spectroscopy, radiometers for atmospheric observation, or high frequency wireless communications (WiGig) are just some of them. This thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part, the most common properties of the liquid crystal materials are described, especially those exhibited in the nematic phase. The study is focused on the dielectric anisotropy (Ac) of uniaxial liquid crystals, which is defined as the difference between the parallel (e/7) and perpendicular (e±) permittivities: Ae = e,, - e±. This parameter allows the permittivity of a LC confined in an arbitrary volume at a certain biasing voltage to be described by solving a variational problem that involves both the electrostatic and elastic energies. Thus, the frequency dependence of (Ae) is also described and characterised. Note that an appropriate LC modelling is quite important to ensure enough accuracy in the phase shift provided by each cell that makes up the reflectarray, and therefore to achieve a good electrical performance at the antenna level. The second part of the thesis is focused on the design of resonant reflectarray cells based on liquid crystal. The reason why resonant cells have been chosen lies in the fact that they are able to provide enough phase range using the values of the dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystals, which are typically small. Thus, the aim of this part is to investigate several reflectarray cell architectures capable of providing good electrical performance at the antenna level, which significantly improve the electrical performance of the cells reported in the literature. Similarly, another of the objectives is to develop a general tool to design these cells. To fulfill these objectives, the electrical yields of different types of resonant reflectarray elements are investigated, beginning from the simplest, which is made up of a single resonator and limits the state of the art. To overcome the electrical limitations of the single resonant cell, several elements consisting of multiple resonators are considered, which can be single-layer or multilayer. In a first step, the design procedure of these structures makes use of a conventional electromagnetic model which has been used in the literature, which considers that the liquid crystal behaves as homogeneous and isotropic materials whose permittivity varies between (e/7) y (e±). However, in this part of the thesis it is shown that the conventional modelling is not enough to describe the physical behaviour of the liquid crystal in reflectarray cells accurately. Therefore, a more accurate analysis and design procedure based on a more general model is proposed and developed, which defines the liquid crystal as an anisotropic three-dimensional inhomogeneous material. The design procedure is able to optimize multi-resonant cells efficiently to achieve good electrical performance in terms of bandwidth, phase range, losses, or sensitivity to the angle of incidence. The errors made when the conventional modelling (amplitude and phase) is considered have been also analysed for various cell geometries, by using measured results from several antenna prototypes made up of real liquid crystals at frequencies above 100 GHz. The measurements have been performed in a periodic environment using a quasi-optical bench, which has been designed especially for this purpose. One of these prototypes has been optimized to achieve a relatively large bandwidth (10%) at 100 GHz, low losses, a phase range of more than 360º, a low sensitivity to angle of incidence, and a low influence of the transversal inhomogeneity of the liquid crystal in the cell. The electrical yields of this prototype at the cell level improve those achieved by other elements reported in the literature, so that this prototype has been used in the last part of the thesis to perform several complete antennas for beam scanning applications. Finally, in this second part of the thesis, a novel strategy to characterise the macroscopic anisotropy using reflectarray cells is presented. The results in both RF and AC frequencies are compared with those obtained by other methods. The third part of the thesis consists on the study, design, manufacture and testing of LCbased reflectarray antennas in complex configurations. Note that the design procedure of a passive reflectarray antenna just consists on finding out the dimensions of the metallisations of each cell (which are used for phase control), using well-known optimization processes. However, in the case of reconfigurable reflectarrays based on liquid crystals, an additional step must be taken into account, which consists of accurately calculating the control voltages to be applied to each cell to configure the required phase-shift distribution on the surface of the antenna. Similarly, the structure to address the voltages at each cell and the control circuitry must be also considered. Therefore, the voltage synthesis is even more important than the design of the cell geometries (dimensions), since the voltages are directly related to the phase-shift. Several voltage synthesis procedures have been proposed in the state of the art, which are based on the experimental characterization of the phase/voltage curve. However, this characterization can be only carried out at a single angle of incidence and at certain cell dimensions, so that the synthesized voltages are different from those needed, thus giving rise to phase errors of more than 70°. Thus, the electrical yields of the LCreflectarrays reported in the literature are limited in terms of bandwidth, scanning range or side lobes level. In this last part of the thesis, a new voltage synthesis procedure has been defined and developed, which allows the required voltage to be calculated at each cell using simulations that take into account the particular dimensions of the cells, their angles of incidence, the frequency, and the AC biasing signal (frequency and waveform). The strategy is based on the modelling of each one of the permittivity states of the liquid crystal as an anisotropic substrate with longitudinal inhomogeneity (1D), or in certain cases, as an equivalent homogeneous tensor. The accuracy of both electromagnetic models is also discussed. The phase errors made by using the proposed voltage synthesis are better than 7º. In order to obtain an efficient tool to analyse and design the reflectarray, an electromagnetic analysis tool based on the Method of Moments in the spectral domain (SD-MoM) has also written and developed for anisotropic stratified media, which is used at each iteration of the voltage synthesis procedure. The voltage synthesis is also designed to minimize the effect of amplitude ripple on the radiation pattern, which is typical of reflectarrays made up of cells exhibiting high losses and represents a further advance in achieving a better antenna performance. To calculate the radiation patterns used in the synthesis procedure, an element-by-element analysis is assumed, which considers the local periodicity approach. Under this consideration, the use of a novel method is proposed, which avoids the limitation that the local periodicity imposes on the excitation. Once the appropriate strategy to calculate the voltages to be applied at each cell is developed, and once it is designed and manufactured both the structure to address the voltages to the antenna and the control circuits, two complete LC-based reflectarray antennas that operate at 100 GHz have been designed, manufactured and tested using the previously presented cells. The first prototype consists of a single offset reflectarray with beam scanning capabilities on one plane (elevation and azimuth). Although several LC-reflectarray antennas that provide 2-D scanning capabilities are also designed, and certain strategies to achieve the 2-D addressing of the voltage are proposed, the manufactured prototype addresses the voltages in one dimension in order to reduce the number of controls and manufacturing errors, and thereby validating the design tool. For an average aperture size (with a number of rows and columns of between 30 and 50 elements, which means a reflectarray with more than 900 cells), the single offset configuration provides an antenna gain of between 20 and 30 dBi and a large scanning range. The prototype tested at 100 GHz exhibits an electronically scanned beam in an angular range of 55º and 8% of bandwidth, in which the side lobe level (SLL) remains better than -13 dB. The maximum gain is 19.4 dBi. The electrical performance of the antenna is clearly an improvement on those achieved by other authors in the state of the art. The second prototype corresponds to a dual reflector antenna with a liquid crystal-based reflectarray used as a sub-reflector for beam scanning in one plane (azimuth or elevation). The main objective is to obtain a higher gain than that provided by the single offset configuration, but using a more compact architecture. In this case, a maximum gain of 35 dBi is achieved, although at the expense of reducing the scanning range to 12°, which is inherent in this type of structure. As a general statement, the voltage synthesis and the design procedure of the cells, jointly make up a complete, accurate and efficient design tool of reconfigurable reflectarray antennas based on liquid crystals. The tool has been validated by testing the previously mentioned prototypes at 100 GHz, which achieve something never reached before for this type of antenna: a competitive electrical performance, and an excellent prediction of the results. The design procedure is general and therefore can be used at any frequency for which the liquid crystal exhibits dielectric anisotropy. The two prototypes designed, manufactured and tested in this thesis are also some of the first antennas that currently operate at frequencies above 100 GHz. In fact, the dual reflector antenna is the first electronically scanned dual reflector antenna at frequencies above 60 GHz (the operation frequency is 100 GHz) with a gain greater than 25 dBi, being in turn the first dual-reflector antenna with a real reconfigurable sub-reflectarray. Finally, some improvements that should be still investigated to make these antennas commercially competitive are proposed.

La capacidad de transporte es uno de los baremos fundamentales para evaluar la progresión que puede llegar a tener un área económica y social. Es un sector de elevada importancia para la sociedad actual. Englobado en los distintos tipos de transporte, uno de los medios de transporte que se encuentra más en alza en la actualidad, es el ferroviario. Tanto para movilidad de pasajeros como para mercancías, el tren se ha convertido en un medio de transporte muy útil. Se encuentra dentro de las ciudades, entre ciudades con un radio pequeño entre ellas e incluso cada vez más, gracias a la alta velocidad, entre ciudades con gran distancia entre ellas. Esta Tesis pretende ayudar en el diseño de una de las etapas más importantes de los Proyectos de instalación de un sistema ferroviario: el sistema eléctrico de tracción. La fase de diseño de un sistema eléctrico de tracción ferroviaria se enfrenta a muchas dudas que deben ser resueltas con precisión. Del éxito de esta fase dependerá la capacidad de afrontar las demandas de energía de la explotación ferroviaria. También se debe atender a los costes de instalación y de operación, tanto costes directos como indirectos. Con la Metodología que se presenta en esta Tesis se ofrecerá al diseñador la opción de manejar un sistema experto que como soluciones le plantee un conjunto de escenarios de sistemas eléctricos correctos, comprobados por resolución de modelos de ecuaciones. Correctos desde el punto de vista de validez de distintos parámetros eléctrico, como de costes presupuestarios e impacto de costes indirectos. Por tanto, el diseñador al haber hecho uso de esta Metodología, tendría en un espacio de tiempo relativamente corto, un conjunto de soluciones factibles con las que poder elegir cuál convendría más según sus intereses finales. Esta Tesis se ha desarrollado en una vía de investigación integrada dentro del Centro de Investigaciones Ferroviarias CITEF-UPM. Entre otros proyectos y vías de investigación, en CITEF se ha venido trabajando en estudios de validación y dimensionamiento de sistemas eléctricos ferroviarios con diversos y variados clientes y sistemas ferroviarios. A lo largo de los proyectos realizados, el interés siempre ha girado mayoritariamente sobre los siguientes parámetros del sistema eléctrico: - Calcular número y posición de subestaciones de tracción. Potencia de cada subestación. - Tipo de catenaria a lo largo del recorrido. Conductores que componen la catenaria. Características. - Calcular número y posición de autotransformadores para sistemas funcionando en alterna bitensión o 2x25kV. - Posición Zonas Neutras. - Validación según normativa de: o Caídas de tensión en la línea o Tensiones máximas en el retorno de la línea o Sobrecalentamiento de conductores o Sobrecalentamiento de los transformadores de las subestaciones de tracción La idea es que las soluciones aportadas por la Metodología sugieran escenarios donde de estos parámetros estén dentro de los límites que marca la normativa. Tener la posibilidad de tener un repositorio de posibles escenarios donde los parámetros y elementos eléctricos estén calculados como correctos, aporta un avance en tiempos y en pruebas, que mejoraría ostensiblemente el proceso habitual de diseño para los sistemas eléctricos ferroviarios. Los costes directos referidos a elementos como subestaciones de tracción, autotransformadores, zonas neutras, ocupan un gran volumen dentro del presupuesto de un sistema ferroviario. En esta Tesis se ha querido profundizar también en el efecto de los costes indirectos provocados en la instalación y operación de sistemas eléctricos. Aquellos derivados del impacto medioambiental, los costes que se generan al mantener los equipos eléctricos y la instalación de la catenaria, los costes que implican la conexión entre las subestaciones de tracción con la red general o de distribución y por último, los costes de instalación propios de cada elemento compondrían los costes indirectos que, según experiencia, se han pensado relevantes para ejercer un cierto control sobre ellos. La Metodología cubrirá la posibilidad de que los diseños eléctricos propuestos tengan en cuenta variaciones de coste inasumibles o directamente, proponer en igualdad de condiciones de parámetros eléctricos, los más baratos en función de los costes comentados. Analizando los costes directos e indirectos, se ha pensado dividir su impacto entre los que se computan en la instalación y los que suceden posteriormente, durante la operación de la línea ferroviaria. Estos costes normalmente suelen ser contrapuestos, cuánto mejor es uno peor suele ser el otro y viceversa, por lo que hace falta un sistema que trate ambos objetivos por separado. Para conseguir los objetivos comentados, se ha construido la Metodología sobre tres pilares básicos: - Simulador ferroviario Hamlet: Este simulador integra módulos para construir esquemas de vías ferroviarios completos; módulo de simulación mecánica y de la tracción de material rodante; módulo de señalización ferroviaria; módulo de sistema eléctrico. Software realizado en C++ y Matlab. - Análisis y estudio de cómo focalizar los distintos posibles escenarios eléctricos, para que puedan ser examinados rápidamente. Pico de demanda máxima de potencia por el tráfico ferroviario. - Algoritmos de optimización: A partir de un estudio de los posibles algoritmos adaptables a un sistema tan complejo como el que se plantea, se decidió que los algoritmos genéticos serían los elegidos. Se han escogido 3 algoritmos genéticos, permitiendo recabar información acerca del comportamiento y resultados de cada uno de ellos. Los elegidos por motivos de tiempos de respuesta, multiobjetividad, facilidad de adaptación y buena y amplia aplicación en proyectos de ingeniería fueron: NSGA-II, AMGA-II y ɛ-MOEA. - Diseño de funciones y modelo preparado para trabajar con los costes directos e indirectos y las restricciones básicas que los escenarios eléctricos no deberían violar. Estas restricciones vigilan el comportamiento eléctrico y la estabilidad presupuestaria. Las pruebas realizadas utilizando el sistema han tratado o bien de copiar situaciones que se puedan dar en la realidad o directamente sistemas y problemas reales. Esto ha proporcionado además de la posibilidad de validar la Metodología, también se ha posibilitado la comparación entre los algoritmos genéticos, comparar sistemas eléctricos escogidos con los reales y llegar a conclusiones muy satisfactorias. La Metodología sugiere una vía de trabajo muy interesante, tanto por los resultados ya obtenidos como por las oportunidades que puede llegar a crear con la evolución de la misma. Esta Tesis se ha desarrollado con esta idea, por lo que se espera pueda servir como otro factor para trabajar con la validación y diseño de sistemas eléctricos ferroviarios. ABSTRACT Transport capacity is one of the critical points to evaluate the progress than a specific social and economical area is able to reach. This is a sector of high significance for the actual society. Included inside the most common types of transport, one of the means of transport which is elevating its use nowadays is the railway. Such as for passenger transport of weight movements, the train is being consolidated like a very useful mean of transport. Railways are installed in many geography areas. Everyone know train in cities, or connecting cities inside a surrounding area or even more often, taking into account the high-speed, there are railways infrastructure between cities separated with a long distance. This Ph.D work aims to help in the process to design one of the most essential steps in Installation Projects belonging to a railway system: Power Supply System. Design step of the railway power supply, usually confronts to several doubts and uncertainties, which must be solved with high accuracy. Capacity to supply power to the railway traffic depends on the success of this step. On the other hand is very important to manage the direct and indirect costs derived from Installation and Operation. With the Methodology is presented in this Thesis, it will be offered to the designer the possibility to handle an expert system that finally will fill a set of possible solutions. These solutions must be ready to work properly in the railway system, and they were tested using complex equation models. This Thesis has been developed through a research way, integrated inside Citef (Railway Research Centre of Technical University of Madrid). Among other projects and research ways, in Citef has been working in several validation studies and dimensioning of railway power supplies. It is been working by a large range of clients and railways systems. Along the accomplished Projects, the main goal has been rounded mostly about the next list of parameters of the electrical system: - Calculating number and location of traction substations. Power of each substation. - Type of Overhead contact line or catenary through the railway line. The wires which set up the catenary. Main Characteristics. - Calculating number and position of autotransformers for systems working in alternating current bi-voltage of called 2x25 kV. - Location of Neutral Zones. - Validating upon regulation of: o Drop voltages along the line o Maximum return voltages in the line o Overheating/overcurrent of the wires of the catenary o Avoiding overheating in the transformers of the traction substations. Main objective is that the solutions given by the Methodology, could be suggest scenarios where all of these parameters from above, would be between the limits established in the regulation. Having the choice to achieve a repository of possible good scenarios, where the parameters and electrical elements will be assigned like ready to work, that gives a great advance in terms of times and avoiding several tests. All of this would improve evidently the regular railway electrical systems process design. Direct costs referred to elements like traction substations, autotransformers, neutral zones, usually take up a great volume inside the general budget in railway systems. In this Thesis has been thought to bear in mind another kind of costs related to railway systems, also called indirect costs. These could be enveloped by those enmarked during installation and operation of electrical systems. Those derived from environmental impact; costs generated during the maintenance of the electrical elements and catenary; costs involved in the connection between traction substations and general electric grid; finally costs linked with the own installation of the whole electrical elements needed for the correct performance of the railway system. These are integrated inside the set has been collected taking into account own experience and research works. They are relevant to be controlled for our Methodology, just in case for the designers of this type of systems. The Methodology will cover the possibility that the final proposed power supply systems will be hold non-acceptable variations of costs, comparing with initial expected budgets, or directly assuming a threshold of budget for electrical elements in actual scenario, and achieving the cheapest in terms of commented costs from above. Analyzing direct and indirect costs, has been thought to divide their impact between two main categories. First one will be inside the Installation and the other category will comply with the costs often happens during Railway Operation time. These costs normally are opposed, that means when one is better the other turn into worse, in costs meaning. For this reason is necessary treating both objectives separately, in order to evaluate correctly the impact of each one into the final system. The objectives detailed before build the Methodology under three basic pillars: - Railway simulator Hamlet: This software has modules to configure many railway type of lines; mechanical and traction module to simulate the movement of rolling stock; signaling module; power supply module. This software has been developed using C++ and Matlab R13a - Previously has been mandatory to study how would be possible to work properly with a great number of feasible electrical systems. The target comprised the quick examination of these set of scenarios in terms of time. This point is talking about Maximum power demand peaks by railway operation plans. - Optimization algorithms. A railway infrastructure is a very complex system. At the beginning it was necessary to search about techniques and optimization algorithms, which could be adaptable to this complex system. Finally three genetic multiobjective algorithms were the chosen. Final decision was taken attending to reasons such as time complexity, able to multiobjective, easy to integrate in our problem and with a large application in engineering tasks. They are: NSGA-II, AMGA-II and ɛ-MOEA. - Designing objectives functions and equation model ready to work with the direct and indirect costs. The basic restrictions are not able to avoid, like budgetary or electrical, connected hardly with the recommended performance of elements, catenary and safety in a electrical railway systems. The battery of tests launched to the Methodology has been designed to be as real as possible. In fact, due to our work in Citef and with real Projects, has been integrated and configured three real railway lines, in order to evaluate correctly the final results collected by the Methodology. Another topic of our tests has been the comparison between the performances of the three algorithms chosen. Final step has been the comparison again with different possible good solutions, it means power supply system designs, provided by the Methodology, testing the validity of them. Once this work has been finished, the conclusions have been very satisfactory. Therefore this Thesis suggest a very interesting way of research and work, in terms of the results obtained and for the future opportunities can be created with the evolution of this. This Thesis has been developed with this idea in mind, so is expected this work could adhere another factor to work in the difficult task of validation and design of railway power supply systems.

In recent decades, full electric and hybrid electric vehicles have emerged as an alternative to conventional cars due to a range of factors, including environmental and economic aspects. These vehicles are the result of considerable efforts to seek ways of reducing the use of fossil fuel for vehicle propulsion. Sophisticated technologies such as hybrid and electric powertrains require careful study and optimization. Mathematical models play a key role at this point. Currently, many advanced mathematical analysis tools, as well as computer applications have been built for vehicle simulation purposes. Given the great interest of hybrid and electric powertrains, along with the increasing importance of reliable computer-based models, the author decided to integrate both aspects in the research purpose of this work. Furthermore, this is one of the first final degree projects held at the ETSII (Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers) that covers the study of hybrid and electric propulsion systems. The present project is based on MBS3D 2.0, a specialized software for the dynamic simulation of multibody systems developed at the UPM Institute of Automobile Research (INSIA). Automobiles are a clear example of complex multibody systems, which are present in nearly every field of engineering. The work presented here benefits from the availability of MBS3D software. This program has proven to be a very efficient tool, with a highly developed underlying mathematical formulation. On this basis, the focus of this project is the extension of MBS3D features in order to be able to perform dynamic simulations of hybrid and electric vehicle models. This requires the joint simulation of the mechanical model of the vehicle, together with the model of the hybrid or electric powertrain. These sub-models belong to completely different physical domains. In fact the powertrain consists of energy storage systems, electrical machines and power electronics, connected to purely mechanical components (wheels, suspension, transmission, clutch…). The challenge today is to create a global vehicle model that is valid for computer simulation. Therefore, the main goal of this project is to apply co-simulation methodologies to a comprehensive model of an electric vehicle, where sub-models from different areas of engineering are coupled. The created electric vehicle (EV) model consists of a separately excited DC electric motor, a Li-ion battery pack, a DC/DC chopper converter and a multibody vehicle model. Co-simulation techniques allow car designers to simulate complex vehicle architectures and behaviors, which are usually difficult to implement in a real environment due to safety and/or economic reasons. In addition, multi-domain computational models help to detect the effects of different driving patterns and parameters and improve the models in a fast and effective way. Automotive designers can greatly benefit from a multidisciplinary approach of new hybrid and electric vehicles. In this case, the global electric vehicle model includes an electrical subsystem and a mechanical subsystem. The electrical subsystem consists of three basic components: electric motor, battery pack and power converter. A modular representation is used for building the dynamic model of the vehicle drivetrain. This means that every component of the drivetrain (submodule) is modeled separately and has its own general dynamic model, with clearly defined inputs and outputs. Then, all the particular submodules are assembled according to the drivetrain configuration and, in this way, the power flow across the components is completely determined. Dynamic models of electrical components are often based on equivalent circuits, where Kirchhoff’s voltage and current laws are applied to draw the algebraic and differential equations. Here, Randles circuit is used for dynamic modeling of the battery and the electric motor is modeled through the analysis of the equivalent circuit of a separately excited DC motor, where the power converter is included. The mechanical subsystem is defined by MBS3D equations. These equations consider the position, velocity and acceleration of all the bodies comprising the vehicle multibody system. MBS3D 2.0 is entirely written in MATLAB and the structure of the program has been thoroughly studied and understood by the author. MBS3D software is adapted according to the requirements of the applied co-simulation method. Some of the core functions are modified, such as integrator and graphics, and several auxiliary functions are added in order to compute the mathematical model of the electrical components. By coupling and co-simulating both subsystems, it is possible to evaluate the dynamic interaction among all the components of the drivetrain. ‘Tight-coupling’ method is used to cosimulate the sub-models. This approach integrates all subsystems simultaneously and the results of the integration are exchanged by function-call. This means that the integration is done jointly for the mechanical and the electrical subsystem, under a single integrator and then, the speed of integration is determined by the slower subsystem. Simulations are then used to show the performance of the developed EV model. However, this project focuses more on the validation of the computational and mathematical tool for electric and hybrid vehicle simulation. For this purpose, a detailed study and comparison of different integrators within the MATLAB environment is done. Consequently, the main efforts are directed towards the implementation of co-simulation techniques in MBS3D software. In this regard, it is not intended to create an extremely precise EV model in terms of real vehicle performance, although an acceptable level of accuracy is achieved. The gap between the EV model and the real system is filled, in a way, by introducing the gas and brake pedals input, which reflects the actual driver behavior. This input is included directly in the differential equations of the model, and determines the amount of current provided to the electric motor. For a separately excited DC motor, the rotor current is proportional to the traction torque delivered to the car wheels. Therefore, as it occurs in the case of real vehicle models, the propulsion torque in the mathematical model is controlled through acceleration and brake pedal commands. The designed transmission system also includes a reduction gear that adapts the torque coming for the motor drive and transfers it. The main contribution of this project is, therefore, the implementation of a new calculation path for the wheel torques, based on performance characteristics and outputs of the electric powertrain model. Originally, the wheel traction and braking torques were input to MBS3D through a vector directly computed by the user in a MATLAB script. Now, they are calculated as a function of the motor current which, in turn, depends on the current provided by the battery pack across the DC/DC chopper converter. The motor and battery currents and voltages are the solutions of the electrical ODE (Ordinary Differential Equation) system coupled to the multibody system. Simultaneously, the outputs of MBS3D model are the position, velocity and acceleration of the vehicle at all times. The motor shaft speed is computed from the output vehicle speed considering the wheel radius, the gear reduction ratio and the transmission efficiency. This motor shaft speed, somehow available from MBS3D model, is then introduced in the differential equations corresponding to the electrical subsystem. In this way, MBS3D and the electrical powertrain model are interconnected and both subsystems exchange values resulting as expected with tight-coupling approach.When programming mathematical models of complex systems, code optimization is a key step in the process. A way to improve the overall performance of the integration, making use of C/C++ as an alternative programming language, is described and implemented. Although this entails a higher computational burden, it leads to important advantages regarding cosimulation speed and stability. In order to do this, it is necessary to integrate MATLAB with another integrated development environment (IDE), where C/C++ code can be generated and executed. In this project, C/C++ files are programmed in Microsoft Visual Studio and the interface between both IDEs is created by building C/C++ MEX file functions. These programs contain functions or subroutines that can be dynamically linked and executed from MATLAB. This process achieves reductions in simulation time up to two orders of magnitude. The tests performed with different integrators, also reveal the stiff character of the differential equations corresponding to the electrical subsystem, and allow the improvement of the cosimulation process. When varying the parameters of the integration and/or the initial conditions of the problem, the solutions of the system of equations show better dynamic response and stability, depending on the integrator used. Several integrators, with variable and non-variable step-size, and for stiff and non-stiff problems are applied to the coupled ODE system. Then, the results are analyzed, compared and discussed. From all the above, the project can be divided into four main parts: 1. Creation of the equation-based electric vehicle model; 2. Programming, simulation and adjustment of the electric vehicle model; 3. Application of co-simulation methodologies to MBS3D and the electric powertrain subsystem; and 4. Code optimization and study of different integrators. Additionally, in order to deeply understand the context of the project, the first chapters include an introduction to basic vehicle dynamics, current classification of hybrid and electric vehicles and an explanation of the involved technologies such as brake energy regeneration, electric and non-electric propulsion systems for EVs and HEVs (hybrid electric vehicles) and their control strategies. Later, the problem of dynamic modeling of hybrid and electric vehicles is discussed. The integrated development environment and the simulation tool are also briefly described. The core chapters include an explanation of the major co-simulation methodologies and how they have been programmed and applied to the electric powertrain model together with the multibody system dynamic model. Finally, the last chapters summarize the main results and conclusions of the project and propose further research topics. In conclusion, co-simulation methodologies are applicable within the integrated development environments MATLAB and Visual Studio, and the simulation tool MBS3D 2.0, where equation-based models of multidisciplinary subsystems, consisting of mechanical and electrical components, are coupled and integrated in a very efficient way.

The emission of light from each junction in a series-connected multijunction solar cell both complicates and elucidates the understanding of its performance under arbitrary conditions. Bringing together many recent advances in this understanding, we present a general 1-D model to describe luminescent coupling that arises from both voltage-driven electroluminescence and voltage-independent photoluminescence in nonideal junctions that include effects such as Sah-Noyce-Shockley (SNS) recombination with n ≠ 2, Auger recombination, shunt resistance, reverse-bias breakdown, series resistance, and significant dark area losses. The individual junction voltages and currents are experimentally determined from measured optical and electrical inputs and outputs of the device within the context of the model to fit parameters that describe the devices performance under arbitrary input conditions. Techniques to experimentally fit the model are demonstrated for a four-junction inverted metamorphic solar cell, and the predictions of the model are compared with concentrator flash measurements.

Nonradiative recombination in inverted GaInP junctions is dramatically reduced using a rear-heterojunction design rather than the more traditional thin-emitter homojunction design. When this GaInP junction design is included in inverted multijunction solar cells, the high radiative efficiency translates into both higher subcell voltage and high luminescence coupling to underlying subcells, both of which contribute to improved performance. Subcell voltages within two and four junction devices are measured by electroluminescence and the internal radiative efficiency is quantified as a function of recombination current using optical modeling. The performance of these concentrator multijunction devices is compared with the Shockley–Queisser detailed-balance radiative limit, as well as an internal radiative limit, which considers the effects of the actual optical environment in which a perfect junction may exist.

This paper studies the recombination at the perimeter in the subcells that constitute a GaInP/GaAs/Ge lattice-matched triple-junction solar cell. For that, diodes of different sizes and consequently different perimeter/area ratios have been manufactured in single-junction solar cells resembling the subcells in a triple-junction solar cell. It has been found that neither in GaInP nor in Ge solar cells the recombination at the perimeter is significant in devices as small as 500 μm × 500μm(2.5 ⋅ 10 − 3 cm2) in GaInP and 250μm  × 250μm (6.25 ⋅ 10 − 4cm2) in Ge. However, in GaAs, the recombination at the perimeter is not negligible at low voltages even in devices as large as 1cm2, and it is the main limiting recombination factor in the open circuit voltage even at high concentrations in solar cells of 250 μm  × 250μm (6.25 ⋅ 10 − 4 cm2) or smaller. Therefore, the recombination at the perimeter in GaAs should be taken into account when optimizing triple-junction solar cells.

We present results for quadruple-junction inverted metamorphic (4J-IMM) devices under the concentrated direct spectrum and analyze the present limitations to performance. The devices integrate lattice-matched subcells with rear heterojunctions, as well as lattice-mismatched subcells with low threading dislocation density. To interconnect the subcells, thermally stable lattice-matched tunnel junctions are used, as well as a metamorphic GaAsSb/GaInAs tunnel junction between the lattice-mismatched subcells. A broadband antireflection coating is used, as well as a front metal grid designed for high concentration operation. The best device has a peak efficiency of (43.8 ± 2.2)% at 327-sun concentration, as measured with a spectrally adjustable flash simulator, and maintains an efficiency of (42.9 ± 2.1)% at 869 suns, which is the highest concentration measured. The Voc increases from 3.445 V at 1-sun to 4.10 V at 327-sun concentration, which indicates high material quality in all of the subcells. The subcell voltages are analyzed using optical modeling, and the present device limitations and pathways to improvement are discussed. Although further improvements are possible, the 4J-IMM structure is clearly capable of very high efficiency at concentration, despite the complications arising from utilizing lattice-mismatched subcells.

In higher plants changes and oscillations in cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) are central to hormonal physiology, including that of abscisic acid (ABA), which signals conditions of water stress and alters ion channel activities in guard cells of higher-plant leaves. Such changes in [Ca2+]i are thought to encode for cellular responses to different stimuli, but their origins and functions are poorly understood. Because transients and oscillations in membrane voltage also occur in guard cells and are elicited by hormones, including ABA, we suspected a coupling of [Ca2+]i to voltage and its interaction with ABA. We recorded [Ca2+]i by Fura2 fluorescence ratio imaging and photometry while bringing membrane voltage under experimental control with a two-electrode voltage clamp in intact Vicia guard cells. Free-running oscillations between voltages near −50 mV and −200 mV were associated with oscillations in [Ca2+]i, and, under voltage clamp, equivalent membrane hyperpolarizations caused [Ca2+]i to increase, often in excess of 1 μM, from resting values near 100 nM. Image analysis showed that the voltage stimulus evoked a wave of high [Ca2+]i that spread centripetally from the peripheral cytoplasm within 5–10 s and relaxed over 40–60 s thereafter. The [Ca2+]i increases showed a voltage threshold near −120 mV and were sensitive to external Ca2+ concentration. Substituting Mn2+ for Ca2+ to quench Fura2 fluorescence showed that membrane hyperpolarization triggered a divalent influx. ABA affected the voltage threshold for the [Ca2+]i rise, its amplitude, and its duration. In turn, membrane voltage determined the ability of ABA to raise [Ca2+]i. These results demonstrate a capacity for voltage to evoke [Ca2+]i increases, they point to a dual interaction with ABA in triggering and propagating [Ca2+]i increases, and they implicate a role for voltage in “conditioning” [Ca2+]i signals that regulate ion channels for stomatal function.

Applying a brief repolarizing pre-pulse to a depolarized frog skeletal muscle fiber restores a small fraction of the transverse tubule membrane voltage sensors from the inactivated state. During a subsequent depolarizing test pulse we detected brief, highly localized elevations of myoplasmic Ca2+ concentration (Ca2+ “sparks”) initiated by restored voltage sensors in individual triads at all test pulse voltages. The latency histogram of these events gives the gating pattern of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) calcium release channels controlled by the restored voltage sensors. Both event frequency and clustering of events near the start of the test pulse increase with test pulse depolarization. The macroscopic SR calcium release waveform, obtained from the spark latency histogram and the estimated open time of the channel or channels underlying a spark, exhibits an early peak and rapid marked decline during large depolarizations. For smaller depolarizations, the release waveform exhibits a smaller peak and a slower decline. However, the mean use time and mean amplitude of the individual sparks are quite similar at all test depolarizations and at all times during a given depolarization, indicating that the channel open times and conductances underlying sparks are essentially independent of voltage. Thus, the voltage dependence of SR Ca2+ release is due to changes in the frequency and pattern of occurrence of individual, voltage-independent, discrete release events.
