Automaticity (in this essay defined as short response time) and fluency in language use are closely connected to each other and some research has been conducted regarding some of the aspects involved. In fact, the notion of automaticity is still debated and many definitions and opinions on what automaticity is have been suggested (Andersson,1987, 1992, 1993, Logan, 1988, Segalowitz, 2010). One aspect that still needs more research is the correlation between vocabulary proficiency (a person’s knowledge about words and ability to use them correctly) and response time in word recognition. Therefore, the aim of this study has been to investigate this correlation using two different tests; one vocabulary size test (Paul Nation) and one lexical decision task (SuperLab) that measures both response time and accuracy. 23 Swedish students partaking in the English 7 course in upper secondary Swedish school were tested. The data were analyzed using a quantitative method where the average values and correlations from the test were used to compare the results. The correlations were calculated using Pearson’s Coefficient Correlations Calculator. The empirical study indicates that vocabulary proficiency is not strongly correlated with shorter response times in word recognition. Rather, the data indicate that L2 learners instead are sensitive to the frequency levels of the vocabulary. The accuracy (number of correct recognized words) and response times correlate with the frequency level of the tested words. This indicates that factors other than vocabulary proficiency are important for the ability to recognize words quickly.

The toxicity of aluminium (Al) to fish in acidic waters has been well documented. It was therefore expected that Al toxicity would be significant in fish communities in Gadjarrigamarndah (Gadji) Creek, a seasonally flowing stream in tropical northern Australia. This creek receives acidic groundwater containing elevated concentrations of Al from earlier land irrigation of treated mine tailings water from the former Nabarlek uranium mine. It was hypothesised that Al toxicity was reduced by high levels of silica (Si) in the water, and the subsequent formation of Al-silicate complexes. This prompted a laboratory assessment of the toxicity of Gadji Creek water to sac-fry of the native fish, Mogurnda mogurnda, followed by more detailed investigation of the toxicity of Al and the influence of Si in reducing Al toxicity. No mortality of M. mogurnda sac-fry was observed in two toxicity tests using Gadji Creek water collected in August 1997 and September 1998. The majority of Al (80-95%) was calculated to be complexed with humic substances and sulfate, with <1% being complexed with silicate. Assessment of the influence of silica on the acute toxicity of Al in the absence of natural organic complexants (i.e. in reconstituted freshwater, pH 5) revealed that Si reduced Al toxicity. As the molar ratio of Si:Al was increased, the percent survival of M. mogurnda sac-fry increased until there was no significant (P > 0.05) difference from the controls. However, speciation modelling again predicted that little (<3%) Al complexed with silicate, with the speciation and bioavailability of Al remaining constant as the molar ratio of Si:Al increased. Therefore, the original hypothesis that Al-silicate complexes in solution reduced the toxicity of Al to M. mogurnda could not be supported. This potential mechanism, and an alternative hypothesis, that Si competes with Al for binding sites at the fish gill surface, requires further investigation. The power output achieved at peak oxygen consumption (VO2 peak) and the time this power can be maintained (i.e., Tmax) have been used in prescribing high-intensity interval training. In this context, the present study examined temporal aspects of the VO2 response to exercise at the cycling power that output well trained cyclists achieve their VO2 peak (i.e., Pmax). Following a progressive exercise test to determine VO2 peak, 43 well trained male cyclists (M age = 25 years, SD = 6; M mass = 75 kg SD = 7; M VO2 peak = 64.8 ml(.)kg(1.)min(-1), SD = 5.2) performed two Tmax tests 1 week apart.1. Values expressed for each participant are means and standard deviations of these two tests. Participants achieved a mean VO2 peak during the Tmax test after 176 s (SD = 40; = 74% of Tmax, SD = 12) and maintained it for 66 s (SD = 39; M = 26% of Tmax, SD = 12). Additionally they obtained mean 95 % of VO2 peak after 147 s (SD = 31; M = 62 % of Tmax, SD = 8) and maintained it for 95 s (SD = 38; M = 38 % of Tmax, SD = 8). These results suggest that 60-70% of Tmax is an appropriate exercise duration for a population of well trained cyclists to attain VO2 peak during exercise at Pmax. However due to intraparticipant variability in the temporal aspects of the VO2 response to exercise at Pmax, future research is needed to examine whether individual high-intensity interval training programs for well trained endurance athletes might best be prescribed according to an athlete's individual VO2 response to exercise at Pmax.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is a common form of endocrine hypertension previously believed to account for less than 1% of hypertensive patients. Hypokalemia was considered a prerequisite for pursuing diagnostic tests for PA. Recent studies applying the plasma aldosterone/plasma renin activity ratio (ARR) as a screening test have reported a higher prevalence. This study is a retrospective evaluation of the diagnosis of PA from clinical centers in five continents before and after the widespread use of the ARR as a screening test. The application of this strategy to a greater number of hypertensives led to a 5- to 15-fold increase in the identification of patients affected by PA. Only a small proportion of patients ( between 9 and 37%) were hypokalemic. The annual detection rate of aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) increased in all centers ( by 1.3-6.3 times) after the wide application of ARR. Aldosterone-producing adenomas constituted a much higher proportion of patients with PA in the four centers that employed adrenal venous sampling ( 28 - 50%) than in the center that did not (9%). In conclusion, the wide use of the ARR as a screening test in hypertensive patients led to a marked increase in the detection rate of PA. Copyright © 2004 by The Endocrine Society

A 12-year-old cat was presented to the University of Queensland's Small Animal Teaching Hospital with a 1-day history of left herniparesis of acute onset, with no evidence of trauma or toxin exposure. Neurological examination findings were consistent with a lesion in the caudal left cervical spinal cord (C6 to C8), which was non-painful and had not progressed since the onset of clinical signs. No other abnormalities were found, although myelography showed a mild swelling involving the caudal cervical and cranial thoracic spinal segments. A diagnosis of suspected fibrocartilaginous embolism was made on the basis of the history, clinical presentation and diagnostic tests results, making this case the first report of a suspected fibrocartilaginous embolism in a cat that returned to normal function.

Cervical joint position error (JPE) has been used as a measure of cervical afferent input to detect disturbances in sensori-motor control as a possible contributor to a neck pain syndrome. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cervical JPE, balance and eye movement control. It was of particular interest whether assessment of cervical ME alone was sufficient to signal the presence of disturbances in the two other tests. One hundred subjects with persistent whiplash-associated disorders (WADs) and 40 healthy controls subjects were assessed on measures of cervical JPE, standing balance and the smooth pursuit neck torsion test (SPNT). The results indicated that over all subjects, significant but weak-to-moderate correlations existed between all comfortable stance balance tests and both the SPNT and rotation cervical ME tests. A weak correlation was found between the SPNT and right rotation cervical JPE. An abnormal rotation cervical JPE score had a high positive prediction value (88%) but low sensitivity (60%) and specificity (54%) to determine abnormality in balance and or SPNT test. The results suggest that in patients with persistent WAD, it is not sufficient to measure ME alone. All three measures are required to identify disturbances in the postural control system. Functional stability of the knee is dependent on an intact ligamentous system and the timely and efficient contraction of supporting musculature. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between muscle strength and functional stability in 31 patients pre- and post-operatively, following a unilateral anterior cruciate ligament rupture. All subjects underwent reconstructive surgery using semitendonosis and gracilis tendons. Isokinetic strength assessment of quadriceps and hamstring muscles was performed at a rate of movement of 60% and 120degrees/s. Functional stability was determined by performance during five functional stability tests that included the shuttle run, side step, carioca, single and triple hop tests. Pearson's correlation coefficient statistics were applied to pre-operative and post-operative data respectively. These analyses demonstrated a significant positive correlation between quadriceps strength indices at both testing speeds and the two hop tests pre-operatively (p's < 0.007) and between quadriceps strength indices at both speeds and all five functional tests post-operatively (p's < 0.01). Assessed using Steiger's formula, there was a significant increase in the correlation between quadriceps strength indices and three functional tests post-operatively compared to pre-operatively (p < 0.05). No significant correlation between hamstring strength indices and functional scores existed pre- or post-operatively. This study has shown a significant correlation exists between quadriceps strength indices and functional stability both before and after surgery, this relationship does not reach significance between hamstring strength indices and functional stability.
