Cinema and the Work of Doré

According to Ray Harryhausen, a special effects expert in the film industry, "Gustave Doré would have made a great director of photography . . . He saw things from the point of view of the camera." Doré's work has had a permanent impact on the imaginative realm of film since its very early days. In return, the silver screen has etched Doré into the 20th century imagination. Almost every film about the Bible since The Life and Passion of Jesus Christ produced by Pathé in 1902 refers to his illustrations, and every film adaptation of Dante or Don Quixote has used him as a model, from Georg Wilhelm Pabst and Orson Welles to Terry Gilliam. All films dealing with life in London in the Victorian era by directors ranging from David Lean, to Roman Polanski and Tim Burton draw on the visions in London: a pilgrimage for their sets. A large number of dream fantastical or phantasmagorical scenes take their inspiration from Doré's graphic world, beginning with Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon in 1902. In the realm of cartoons and animation, Walt Disney owes a huge debt to Doré. Doré primal forests, from Atala in particular, were also used in the various versions of King Kong from 1933 to the 2005 film by Peter Jackson, who had already drawn on Doré for The Lord of the Rings. Jean Cocteau was also indebted to the illustrations for Perrault's Fairy Tales for his Beauty and the Beast (1945), as was George Lucas for the character Chewbacca in Star Wars (1977) and even the Harry Potter film series. Through his influence on film history, Doré shaped the mass culture imagination.

Identificação por PCR dos alelos-S associados à compatibilidade gametofítica em ameixeira japonesa

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar e caracterizar molecularmente os alelos-S de cultivares de ameixeira japonesa e verificar a compatibilidade gametofítica entre estes. Foram utilizados dois pares de iniciadores específicos na amplificação dos alelos via PCR, em 18 cultivares: Pluma 7, Gulf Rubi, Blood Plum, Wickson, América, Santa Rosa, Rosa Mineira, Estrela Púrpura, Amarelinha, The First, Harry Pieckstone, Santa Rita, Seleção 16, Seleção A26 (Burbank), Seleção 21, Seleção 19, Methley e Simka. As condições da PCR e as combinações de oligonucleotídeos iniciadores utilizadas permitiram a identificação de alelos-S nas cultivares, bem como a indicação dos polinizadores mais compatíveis. As cultivares América e Santa Rosa, bem como Blood Plum, Wickson, Rosa Mineira, Estrela Púrpura e Seleção 21 apresentam incompatibilidade total entre si, por compartilharem os mesmos alelos.

The hemodynamics of septic shock: a historical perspective.

In the late 19th century, it was already known that severe infections could be associated with cardiovascular collapse, a fact essentially attributed to cardiac failure. A major experimental work in the rabbit, published by Romberg and Pässler in 1899, shifted attention to disturbed peripheral vascular tone as the mechanism of hypotension in these conditions. In the first half of the 20th century, great progresses were made in the pathophysiologic understanding of hemorrhagic and traumatic shocks, while researchers devoted relatively little attention to septic shock. Progress in the hemodynamic understanding of septic shock resumed with the advent of critical care units. The hyperdynamic state was recognized in the late fifties and early sixties. The present short review ends with landmark studies by Max Harry Weil, demonstrating the importance of venous pooling, and John H. Siegel, which introduced the concept of deficient peripheral utilization of oxygen, inspiring later work on the microvascular disturbances of septic shock.

Virranmittausanturin suunnittelu ja simulointi taajuusmuuttajakäyttöön

Virranmittausantureita tarvitaan monenlaisissa käyttökohteissa, joissa ne mittaavat sekä virran suuruuttaettä laatua ja toimivat osana niiden säätelyjärjestelmää. Virranmittausantureita tarvitaan myös vikatilanteiden määrittämiseen erilaisissa suojauspiireissä. Taajuusmuuttajissa virranmittaus on hyvin tärkeää ja suurista virroista sekä taajuuksista johtuen se täytyy suunnitella huolella. Tässä diplomityössä käsitellään ja tutkitaan eri virranmittausmenetelmiä, joiden avulla taajuusmuuttajan luotettava virranmittaus voidaan toteuttaa. Työssä tutkitaan eri menetelmiä virranmittauksen toteuttamiseksi, minkä jälkeen niistä valitaan sopiva menetelmä ja tutkitaan sen eri toteutusvaihtoehtoja. Sopivan toteutusvaihtoehdon valinnan jälkeen työssä suunnitellaan oma virranmittausanturi, joka sopii nimenomaisesti taajuusmuuttajakäyttöön. Suunnitellun anturin ominaisuuksia tutkitaan lopuksi simuloimalla, jonka jälkeen arvioidaan sen soveltumista käytännön sovelluksiin sekä arvioidaan erilaisia keinoja sen parantamiseksi.

Caracterização molecular dos alelos-S de incompatibilidade gametofítica em Prunus salicina Lindl.

Pomares comerciais de ameixeira-japonesa devem conter pelo menos duas cultivares para obter boa fertilização, devido à presença do sistema de incompatibilidade gametofítica, que inibe a autofecundação da grande maioria das cultivares. No presente trabalho, buscou-se identificar e caracterizar molecularmente os alelos-S de 11 cultivares de ameixeira-japonesa (Prunus salicina Lindl.) e verificar a compatibilidade entre os genótipos avaliados. As cultivares Santa Rosa, Santa Rita, Reubennel, Pluma 7, América, Rosa Mineira, Amarelinha, The First, Gulfblaze (Clone São Paulo), Gulfblaze (Clone Guaiba) e Harry Pickstone foram analisadas por meio de Reação em Cadeia da Polimerase (PCR) com três pares de iniciadores específicos para alelos-S. As condições da PCR utilizadas, bem como as combinações de iniciadores, permitiram a identificação de alelos-S nas cultivares de P. salicina estudadas, bem como a indicação dos polinizadores mais compatíveis com algumas das principais cultivares utilizadas na produção de frutas. O sequenciamento de alguns dos alelos-S amplificados revelou elevada similaridade com sequências de nucleotídeos já identificados em outros trabalhos com Prunus spp.. Entretanto, a obtenção de sequências completas de maior número de alelos-S faz-se necessária para o estabelecimento de uma relação de identidade precisa entre os mesmos.

Macrofossils in Raraku Lake (Easter Island) integrated with sedimentary and geochemical records towards a palaeoecological synthesis for the last 34,000 years

Macrofossil analysis of a composite 19 m long sediment core from Rano Raraku Lake (Easter Island)was related to litho-sedimentary and geochemical features of the sediment. Strong stratigraphical patterns are shown by indirect gradient analyses of the data. The good correspondence between the stratigraphical patterns derived from macrofossil (Correspondence Analysis) and sedimentary and geochemical data (Principal Component Analysis) shows that macrofossil associations provide sound palaeolimnological information in conjunction with sedimentary data. The main taphonomic factors in fluencing the macrofossil assemblages are run-off from the catchment, the littoral plant belt, and the depositional environment within the basin. Five main stages during the last 34,000 calibrated years BP (cal yr BP) are characterised from the lithological, geochemical, and macrofossil data. From 34 to 14.6 cal kyr BP (last glacial period) the sediments were largely derived from the catchment, indicating a high energy lake environment with much erosion and run-off bringing abundant plant trichomes, lichens, and mosses into the centre of Raraku Lake.
