We present results on characterization of lasers with ultra-long cavity lengths up to 84km, the longest cavity ever reported. We have analyzed the mode structure, shape and width of the generated spectra, intensity fluctuations depending on length and intra-cavity power. The RF spectra exhibit an ultra-dense cavity mode structure (mode spacing is 1.2kHz for 84km), in which the width of the mode beating is proportional to the intra-cavity power while the optical spectra broaden with power according to the square-root law acquiring a specific shape with exponential wings. A model based on wave turbulence formalism has been developed to describe the observed effects.

We report an all-fiber mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) employing carbon nanotube (CNT) polymer composite film. By using only standard telecom grade components, without any complex polarization control elements in the laser cavity, we have demonstrated polarization locked vector solitons generation with duration of ~583fs , average power of ~3 mW (pulse energy of 118pJ ) at the repetition rate of ~25.7 MHz.

We report an experimental study of low-frequency (~10 kHz) self-pulsing of the output intensity in a high- concentration erbium-doped fiber laser. We suggest that the fast intensity fluctuations caused by multimode and polarization instabilities play the role of an external noise source, leading to low-frequency auto-oscillations through a coherence resonance scenario.

We report results on experimental and theoretical characterisation of self-pulsing in high concentration erbium doped fibre laser which is free from erbium clusters. Unlike previous models of self-pulsing accounting for pair-induced quenching (PIQ) on the clustered erbium ions, new model has been developed with accounting for statistical nature of the excitation migration and upconversion and resonance-like pumpto-signal intensity noise transfer. The obtained results are in a good agreement with the experimental data.

We report a theoretical study and simulations of a novel fiber-spin tailoring technique to suppress the polarization impairments, namely polarization mode dispersion and polarization dependent gain (PDG), in fiber Raman amplifiers. Whereas use of depolarizer or multiplexing pump laser diodes with a final degree of pump polarization of 1% for periodically spun fiber results in PDG of about 0.3 dB, we demonstrate that application of just a two-section fiber (where the first part is short and has no spin, and the second one is periodically spun) can reduce the PDG to as low as below 0.1 dB.

We report on a theoretical study of polarization impairments in periodically spun fiber Raman amplifiers. Based on the Stochastic Generator approach we have derived averaged equations to calculate polarization dependent gain and mean-square gain fluctuations. We show that periodically spun fiber can work as a Raman polarizer but it suffers from increased polarization dependent gain and gain fluctuations. Unlike this, application of a depolarizer can result in suppression of polarization dependent gain and gain fluctuations. We demonstrate that it is possible to design a new fiber Raman polarizer by combining a short fiber without spin and properly chosen parameters and a long periodically spun fiber. This polarizer provides almost the same polarization pulling for all input signal states of polarization and so has very small polarization dependent gain.

We present the results of comparative numerical study of femtosecond laser inscription for fundamental and second harmonic of Yb-doped laser. We have found that second harmonic is more efficient in terms of amount of absorbed energy which leads to lower inscription threshold. Hence this regime is more attractive for applications in femtosecond laser microfabrication. We observed the different size of modified domain on initial pulse energy and different spectrum dynamics during the pulse propagation for fundamental and second harmonics.

We report the results of numerical studies of the impact of asymmetric femtosecond pulses focused in the bulk of the material on the femtosecond modification of fused silica. It is shown that such pulses lead to localisation of absorption in the process of femtosecond modification and to a decrease in the threshold energy of modification. It is found that the optimal asymmetry parameters for reaching the maximum plasma density in the focusing region depend on the pulse energy: at an initial energy of about 100 nJ, it is preferable to use pulses with positive TOD; however, when the energy is increased, it is preferable to use pulses with negative TOD. This is explained by differences in the dynamics of the processes of absorption of energy of a pulse propagating in the material.

We propose a novel technique of doubling optical pulses in both frequency and time domains based on a combination of cross-phase modulation induced by a triangular pump pulse in a nonlinear Kerr medium and subsequent propagation in a dispersive medium.

We study numerically optical turbulence using the particular example of a recently created, ultra-long fibre laser. For normal fibre dispersion, we observed an intermediate state with an extremely narrow spectrum (condensate), which experiences instability and a sharp transition to a fluctuating regime with a wider spectrum. We demonstrate that the number of modes has an impact on the condensate’s lifetime. The smaller the number of modes, the more resistant is the condensate to perturbations. Experimental results show a good agreement with numerical simulations.

We review our recent progress on the study of new nonlinear mechanisms of pulse shaping in passively mode-locked fibre lasers. These include a mode-locking regime featuring pulses with a triangular distribution of the intensity, and spectral compression arising from nonlinear pulse propagation. We also report on our recent experimental studies unveiling new families of vector solitons with precessing states of polarization for multipulsing and bound-state soliton operations in a carbon nanotube mode-locked fibre laser with anomalous dispersion cavity. © 2013 IEEE.

We report a numerical study showing how the random intensity and phase fluctuations across the bandwidth of a broadband optical supercontinuum can be interpreted in terms of the random processes of random walks and Lévy flights. We also describe how the intensity fluctuations can be applied to physical random number generation. We conclude that the optical supercontinuum provides a highly versatile means of studying and generating a wide class of random processes at optical wavelengths. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

We review recent progress in optical wave turbulence with a specific focus on the fast growing field of fibre lasers. Weak irregular nonlinear interactions between a large number of resonator modes are responsible for practically important characteristics of fibre lasers such as spectral broadening of radiation. Wave turbulence is a fundamental nonlinear phenomenon which occurs in a variety of nonlinear wave-bearing physical systems. The experimental impediments and the computationally intensive nature of simulating of hydrodynamic or plasma wave turbulence often make it rather challenging to collect a significant number of statistical data The study of turbulent wave behaviour in optical devices offers quite a unique opportunity to collect an enormous amount of data on statistical properties of wave turbulence using high-speed, high precision optical measurements during a relatively short period of time. We present recent theoretical, numerical and experimental results on optical wave turbulence in fibre lasers ranging from weak to strong developed turbulence for different signs of fibre dispersion. Furthermore, we report on our studies of spectral wave condensate in fibre lasers that make interdisciplinary links with a number of other research fields.
