Food irradiation is a treatment that involves subjecting in-bulk or packaged food to a controlled dose of ionizing radiation, with a clearly defined goal. It has been used for disinfestation and sanitization of food commodities and to retard postharvest ripening and senescence processes, being a sustainable alternative to chemical agents 1 . Doses up to 10 kGy are approved by several international authorities for not offering negative effects to food from a nutrition and toxicology point of view 2 . However, the adoption of this technology for food applications has been a slow process due to some misunderstandings by the consumer who often chooses non-irradiated foods. In this study, the effects of the ionizing radiation treatment on physical, chemical and bioactive properties of dried herbs and its suitability for preserving quality attributes of fresh vegetables during cold storage were evaluated. The studied herbs, perennial spotted rockrose (Tuberaria lignosa (Sweet) Samp.) and common mallow (Malva neglecta Wallr.) were freeze-dried and then irradiated up to 10 kGy in a Cobalt-60 chamber. The selected vegetables, watercress (Nasturtium officinale R. Br.) and buckler sorrel (Rumex induratus Boiss. Reut.) were rinsed in tap water, packaged in polyethylene bags, submitted to irradiation doses up to 6 kGy and then were stored at 4 C for a period of up to 12 days. Physical, chemical and bioactive parameters of irradiated and non-irradiated samples were evaluated using different methodologies the colour was measured with a colorimeter, individual chemical compounds were analyzed by chromatographic techniques, antioxidant properties were evaluated using in vitro assays based on different reaction mechanisms, and other quality analyses were performed following official methods of analysis. The irradiation treatment did not significantly affect the colour of the perennial spotted rockrose samples, or its phenolic composition and antioxidant activity 3 . Medium doses preserved the colour of common mallow and a low dose did not induce any adverse effect in the organic acids profile. The green colour of the irradiated vegetables was maintained during cold storage but the treatment had pros and cons in other quality attributes. The 2 kGy dose preserved free sugars and favoured polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) while the 5 kGy dose favoured tocopherols and preserved the antioxidant properties in watercress samples. The 6 kGy dose was a suitable option for preserving PUFA and the ω-6 ω-3 fatty acids ratio in buckler sorrel samples. This comprehensive experimental work allowed selecting appropriate processing doses for the studied plant foods in order to preserve its quality attributes and edibility.

Knowing a cell’s transcriptome is a fundamental requisite in order to analyze its response to the environment. Microarrays have supposed a revolution on this field as they are able to yield an overview of gene expression at any environmental condition on a genome-wide scale. This technique consists in the hybridisation of a nucleic acid sample, previously marked, with a probe (which might be made up of cDNA, oligonucleotides or PCR products) anchored to a solid surface (made of glass, plastic, silicon...) giving as a result a dot grid which reveals, after image analysis, which genes are being expressed. Nevertheless, this only can be achieved if information on the species genome has been generated. Different kinds of expression microarrays exist attending to the probe’s nature and the method used in its synthesis. In this poster two of these will be treated: Spotted Microarrays, for which the probe is synthesised prior to its fixation to the array and allow the analysis of two targets simultaneously. They can be easily customized, but lack high reproducibility and sensitivity. Oligonucleotide Microarrays, which are characterized by the direct printing of the probe on the array. In this case the probes consist on, invariably, oligonucleotides that are complementary to a small fraction of the gene it is representing at the microarray. Their application is somewhat restricted. This fact, however, makes them more reproducible. Currently, the approach towards the transcriptome studies from the Next Generation Sequencing technologies offers a large volume of information in a short amount of time needing less previous information on the target organism than that needed by microarrays, but their expensive price limits their use. The versatility of the latter, together with their reduced costs in comparison to other techniques, makes them an interesting resource in applications that may need less complexity.

The current paper seeks to fulfill an internationalization action plan for Reynaers Aluminium Portugal (RAP) to address the Angolan construction market. Strong market opportunities have been spotted, namely: an increasingly well-succeeded presence of Reynaers’ customers; Reynaers portfolio responsive to an increasingly quality demanding Angolan market; strong support from the multinational chain. Aligned with a constant threat from the Portuguese economy RAP seeks to establish a stronger presence in Angola. Indeed the company has been approaching this market since 2008, resulting in the identification of key players and synergies spotted. For this purpose, the aim is to develop a Commercial and Marketing Plan while taking into consideration the results of the previous company interventions that reflect this market’s DNA.

Abstracts: Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) has been recently detected causing damage to strawberries in Brazil. Infestation in strawberry culture has often been observed jointly with the presence of Zaprionus indianus Gupta. This study investigated the susceptibility of strawberries at three ripening stages to infestation of D. suzukii and Z. indianus and their interaction. In the laboratory, strawberries cv. Albion at different ripening stages (green, semi-ripe and ripe) were exposed to D. suzukii and Z. indianus for 24 h in choice and no-choice bioassays. Additionally, we evaluated the effects of mechanical damage incurred artificially or by D. suzukii ovi-position on Z. indianus infestation. In no-choice bioassay, there were no significant differences in fruit susceptibility to D. suzukii infestation at different ripening stages. However, in choice bioassay, D. suzukii adults preferred to oviposit on R fruit. The presence of mechanical damage did not increase susceptibility of fruit to D. suzukii oviposition. For Z. indianus , there was greater susceptibility of R fruit in relation to SR and G fruit in both the choice and no-choice bioassays. There was a significant and positive interaction of mechanical damage and damage caused by D. suzukii to R fruit and infestation by Z. indianus , which was not observed in SR and G fruit. Although infestation of Z. indianus is related to attack damaged or decaying fruit, this work shows that this species has the ability to oviposit and develop in healthy strawberry fruit with and increased infestation level when the fruit has damage to its epidermis.

BACKGROUND: Drosophila suzukii is a primary insect pest that causes direct damage to fruits with a thin epidermis such as strawberries, cherries and blueberries. In strawberry fields, the co-occurrence of D. suzukii and Zaprionus indianus has increased production losses. This study evaluated the toxicities and effects of insecticidal baits to control adults and larvae of both D. suzukii and Z. indianus . RESULTS: Organophosphate (dimethoate and malathion), spinosyn (spinosad and spinetoram), pyrethroid (lambda-cyhalothrin) and diamide (cyantraniliprole) insecticides exhibited high toxicity to both adults and larvae of D. suzukii and Z. indianus (mortality > 80%) in topical and dip bioassays. However, when the insecticides were mixed with a feeding attractant, a positive effect was observed only for adults of D. suzukii . Insecticides containing neonicotinoids (acetamiprid and thiamethoxam) and pyrolle (chlorfenapyr) caused intermediate mortality to adults of D. suzukii (40?60%) and low mortality for Z. indianus (mortality < 23%); however, these compounds reduced the larval infestation of the two species by 55?86%. Botanical (azadirachtin) and sulphur insecticides exhibited low toxicity (mortality < 40%) on adults and larvae of both species. CONCLUSION: Dimethoate, malathion, spinosad, spinetoram, lambda-cyhalothrin and cyantraniliprole are highly toxic to both larvaeandadultsof D. suzukii and Z.indianus .Theuseoftoxicbaitsforadultsof D. suzukii couldbeanalternativeinmanagement of this species. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry Keywords: spotted-wing drosophila; fig fly; chemical control; strawberry; toxic bait; pest control.
