The world has dominated by automation, wireless communication and various electronic equipments, which has led to the most undesirable offshoots like electromagnetic (EM) pollution. The rationale is environmental concern and the necessity to develop EM absorbing materials. This paper reviews the state of the art of designing polymer based nanocomposites containing nanoscopic particles with high electrical conductivity and complex microwave properties for enhanced EM attenuation. Given the brevity of this review article, herein we have summarized the high frequency millimetre wave absorbing properties of polymer nanocomposites consisting of various nanoparticles that either reflect or absorb microwave radiation like electrically conducting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanosheets (GNs), high dielectric constant ceramic nanoparticles that show relaxation loss in the microwave frequency and magnetic metal and ferrite nanoparticles that absorb microwave radiation through natural resonance, eddy current and hysteresis losses. Furthermore, we have stressed the necessity and impact of hybrid nanoparticles consisting of magnetic and dielectric nanoparticles along with conducting inclusions like CNT and GNs in this review. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) theory and necessary criterion for attenuation has been briefly discussed. The emphasis is made on various mechanisms towards EM attenuation controlled by these nanoparticles. Various structures developed using polymer nanocomposites like bulk, foam and layered structures and their effect on EM attenuation has been elaborately discussed. In addition, various covalent/non-covalent modifications on nanoparticles have been juxtaposed in context to EM attenuation. In addition, we have highlighted important facets and direction for enhancing the microwave attenuation. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nonlinear optical properties (NLO) of a graphene oxide-silver (GO-Ag) nanocomposite have been investigated by the Z-scan setup at Q-switched Nd:YAG laser second harmonic radiation i.e., at 532 nm excitation in a nanosecond regime. A noteworthy enhancement in the NLO properties in the GO-Ag nanocomposite has been reported in comparison with those of the synthesized GO nanosheet. The extracted value of third order nonlinear susceptibility (chi(3)), at a peak intensity of I-0 = 0.2 GW cm(-2), for GO-Ag has been found to be 2.8 times larger than that of GO. The enhancement in NLO properties in the GO-Ag nanocomposite may be attributed to the complex energy band structures formed during the synthesis which promote resonant transition to the conduction band via surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at low laser intensities and excited state transition (ESA) to the conduction band of GO at higher intensities. Along with this photogenerated charge carriers in the conduction band of silver or the increase in defect states during the formation of the GO-Ag nanocomposite may contribute to ESA. Open aperture Z-scan measurement indicates reverse saturable absorption (RSA) behavior of the synthesized nanocomposite which is a clear indication of the optical limiting (OL) ability of the nanocomposite.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings were produced on AM50 Mg alloy in alkaline phosphate based electrolyte with montmorillonite clay additives employing current densities of 30, 60, and 120 mA/cm(2). The effect of current density on the microstructure and corrosion properties of the coating was investigated. The clay additives got melted and reactively incorporated into the coating forming an amorphous phase, at all the current densities. However, the coating was predominantly amorphous only at 30 mA/cm(2) and with increasing current density, increasing fractions of crystalline phases were formed. Higher current densities resulted in increased thickness of the coating, but reduced the compactness of the coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests in 0.5 wt.% (0.08 M) and 3.5 wt.% (0.6 M) NaCl solution revealed that the coatings processed at 30 mA/cm(2) exhibited a relatively better initial corrosion resistance owing to its relatively defect-free barrier layer and compactness of the coating. However, the presence of amorphous phases in significant amounts and lack of MgO in the coating resulted in increased rate of dissolution of the coatings and degradation of corrosion resistance. Coatings produced at higher current densities exhibited initial inferior corrosion resistance due to a more defective barrier layer and increased porosity in pore band and outer porous layer. However, the increased amount of crystalline phases and an increased amount of MgO, which resisted dissolution, counterbalanced the negative effects of defective barrier and increased porosity resulting in a relatively lower rate of the degradation of the corrosion resistance. Thus, the corrosion resistance of all the coatings continuously decreased with time and became similar after prolonged immersion in NaCl solution. Increasing current density, therefore, did not prove to be beneficial for the improvement of the corrosion performance of the PEO coatings. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the results from 10 minidrum centrifuge tests conducted at the Schofield Centre, compiled with 4 additional test results from Thusyanthan et al., 2008. All these tests were designed to measure the uplift resistance of a pipeline installed into stiff clay by trenching and backfilling, then uplifted approximately 3 months after installation. All tests were conducted at 1:30 scale using soil obtained from offshore clay samples. Experimental results show that clay blocks remained intact after 3 prototype months of consolidation, and were lifted rather than sheared during pipe pullout. The uplift resistance therefore depends on the weight of the soil cover and the shearing resistance mobilised at the softening contact points between the intact blocks and within the interstitial slurry. Slow drained pullout led to lower resistance than fast pullout, indicating that the drained response is critical for design. The varying scatter shows that peak uplift resistance is very sensitive to the arrangement of the backfill blocks when the cover and pipe diameter are comparable to the block size. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) pattern formation in carbon nanotube-polymer composite films yields well-defined patterns on the micrometer scale along with the alignment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within these patterns. Conductive pathways in nanotube networks formed during EHD patterning of nanocomposite films results in a substantial increase in the composites' conductivity at loadings exceeding the percolation threshold. The degree of nanotube alignment can be tuned by adjusting the EHD parameters and the degree of alignment is mirrored by the conductivity across the film. Using etching techniques or by embedding relatively long nanotubes, patterned surfaces decorated by CNT brushes were generated. Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

A large diameter cylinder inserted in soils is a new type of engineering structures used in offshore and port engineering. The mechanism of its bearing capacity and the analysis of its stability are important to its design and applications. In this paper, the finite element method is used to analyze the reacting forces of the soft soil foundation on the structure under the wave action. A simplified method is proposed, based on the plastic limit method, for the safety and stability analysis. Our analysis shows that the assumptions made in this paper and the mechanism used are reasonable, and the results obtained are appropriate. The calculation method is very efficient and can be used to evaluate main parameters of the structure in its preliminary designs.

A series of static and cyclic-static tri-axial compression tests under consolidated-undrained conditions are carried out to study the characteristics of post-cyclic strength of the undisturbed and the remolded samples of marine silty clay. It is found that the post-cyclic monotonic strength decreases if the cyclic strain or pore pressure is over a certain value. The maximum degradation is 10% for undisturbed samples while 70% for remolded ones. The relationship between normalized undrained shear strength and apparent overconsolidation ratio, which is determined by the excess pore pressure induced by cyclic loading, is also established. Static consolidated-undrained tests on overconsolidated remolded samples are also performed. It is proposed that the static consolidated-undrained tests may be substituted for the cyclic-static consolidated-undrained tests if the post-cyclic strength degradation of remolded silty clay is needed to be evaluated simply.
