SETTING: Thirty-six priority cities in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, with a high incidence of tuberculosis (TB) cases, deaths and treatment default. OBJECTIVE: To identify the perspectives of city TB control coordinators regarding the most important components of adherence strategies adopted by health care teams to ensure patient adherence in 36 priority cities in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. DESIGN: Qualitative research with semi-structured interviews conducted with the coordinators of the National TB Control Programme involved in the management of TB treatment services in the public sector. RESULTS: The main issues thought to influence adherence to directly observed treatment (DOT) by coordinators include incentives and benefits delivered to patients, patient-health care worker bonding and comprehensive care, the encouragement given by others to follow treatment (family, neighbours and health professionals), and help provided by health professionals for patients to recover their self-esteem. CONCLUSION: The main aspects mentioned by city TB control coordinators regarding patient adherence to treatment and to DOT in Sao Paulo are improvements in communications, relationships based on trust, a humane approach and including the patients in the decision-making process concerning their health.

The nature of the molecular structure of plastics makes the properties of such materials markedly temperature dependent. In addition, the continuous increase in the utilization of polymeric materials in many specific applications has demanded knowledge of their physical properties, both during their processing as raw material, as well as over the working temperature range of the final polymer product. Thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and specific heat, namely the thermal properties, are the three most important physical properties of a material that are needed for heat transfer calculations. Recently, among several different methods for the determination of the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity, transient techniques have become the preferable way for measuring thermal properties of materials. In this work, a very simple and low cost variation of the well known Angstrom method is employed in the experimental determination of the thermal diffusivity of some selected polymers. Cylindrical shaped samples 3 cm diameter and 7 cm high were prepared by cutting from long cylindrical commercial bars. The reproducibility is very good, and the results obtained were checked against results obtained by the hot wire technique, laser flash technique, and when possible, they were also compared with data found in the literature. Thermal conductivity may be then derived from the thermal diffusivity with the knowledge of the bulk density and the specific heat, easily obtained by differential scanning calorimetry. Contrasting responses of Eucalyptus trees to K fertilizer applications have been reported on soils with low K contents. A complete randomized block experiment was set up in Brazil to test the hypothesis that large atmospheric deposits of NaCl in coastal regions might lead to a partial substitution of K by Na in Eucalyptus physiology and enhance tree growth. Treatments with application of 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 kmol K ha(-1) (K(1.5), K(3.0), 1(4.5, respectively) as KCl, 3.0 kmol K ha(-1) applied as K(2)SO(4), 3.0 kmol Na ha(-1) (Na(3.0)) as NaCl commercialized for cattle feeding, and a mixture of 1.5 kmol K + 1.5 kmol Na ha(-1) (K(1.5) + Na(1.5)) were compared to a control treatment (C) with no K and Na applications. All the plots were fertilized with large amounts of the other nutrients. A positive effect of NaCl applications on the growth of E. grandis trees was observed. NaCl and KCl additions in treatments Na(3.0) and K(3.0) increased above-ground biomass by 56% and 130% three years after planting, respectively, in comparison with the C treatment. By contrast, accumulated litterfall up to age 3 years was not significantly modified. NaCl applications in the Na(3.0) treatment significantly increased Na accumulation in above-ground tree components but did not modify K accumulation, whatever the sampling age. A partial substitution of K by Na in tree physiology, as observed for various agricultural crops, might explain this behaviour. Our results suggest the possibility of applying inexpensive K fertilizers, which are less purified in Na, and explain why high yields are achieved without K fertilizer applications in areas with large dry depositions of marine aerosols. Further investigations are necessary to identify the processes involving Na in Eucalyptus tree physiology. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present study, clinical and epidemiological aspects of 529 intoxication cases of organophosphate or carbamate pesticides in the northwest of the state of Parana, Brazil, over a twelve-year period (1994-2005), are presented. One hundred-five of 257 patients (40.8%) who attempted suicide were admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICUs), with an average hospital stay of two days (range 1-40 days). Men corresponded to 56.4% of the cases of suicide attempts and sixteen individuals died. One hundred-forty patients intoxicated due to occupational exposure were all young adults and nine of them were admitted to ICU, with average hospital stays of eight days (range 1-16 days). Of these cases, two patients died. One hundred twenty-four patients intoxicated due to accidental exposure were mainly children and had a hospital average stay of four days. Twenty patients were admitted to the ICU, and one of them died. Overall complications included respiratory failure, convulsions, and aspiration pneumonia. Deliberate ingestion of organophosphates and carbamates Was much more toxic than occupational and accidental exposure. Men aged 15-39 years were the most likely to attempt suicide with these agents and had more prolonged ICU with significant complications and mortality

Welcome to the 2005 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit Annual Report. This report is a brief summary of Unit activities during the 2005 calendar year. The Unit provides personal and academic support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and specifically aims to increase the recruitment, retention, academic performance and graduation rates of Indigenous students. The Unit also administers schemes to help Indigenous students gain access to, and receive support in, tertiary studies such as the Alternative Entry scheme and the federally-funded Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS). The Unit is also the focus for teaching and research in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies at the University of Queensland.

Atherosclerotic plaque contains apoptotic endothelial cells with oxidative stress implicated in this process. Vitamin E and a-lipoic acid are a potent antioxidant combination with the potential to prevent endothelial apoptosis. Regular exercise is known to increase myocardial protection, however, little research has investigated the effects of exercise on the endothelium. The purpose of these studies was to investigate the effects of antioxidant supplementation and/or exercise training on proteins that regulate apoptosis in endothelial cells. Male rats received a control or antioxidant-supplemented diet (vitamin E and alpha-lipoic acid) and were assigned to sedentary or exercise-trained groups for 14 weeks. Left ventricular endothelial cells (LVECs) were isolated and levels of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and the pro-apoptotic protein Bax were measured. Antioxidant supplementation caused a fourfold increase in Bcl-2 (P < 0.05) with no change in Bax (P > 0.05). Bcl-2:Bax was increased sixfold with antioxidant supplementation compared to non-supplemented animals (P < 0.05). Exercise training had no significant effect on Bcl-2, Bax or Bcl-2:Bax either alone or combined with antioxidant supplementation (P > 0.05) compared to non-supplemented animals. However, Bax was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the supplemented trained group compared to non-supplemented trained animals. Cultured bovine endothelial cells incubated for 24 h with vitamin E and/or a-lipoic acid showed the combination of the two antioxidants increased Bcl-2 to a greater extent than cells incubated with the vehicle alone. In summary, vitamin E and a-lipoic acid increase endothelial cell Bcl-2, which may provide increased protection against apoptosis. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Romeo Watkins Lahey (1887-1968) was a distinguished Queensland engineer. He graduated in engineering from the University of Sydney in 1914 and served in World War I from 1915 to 1918 with The Royal Australian Engineers. Following the war, he accepted an offer to remain for a period in England and studied town planning at the University of London. He visited Europe and collected a remarkable set of historic bridge photographs. In the course of this visit, he met Paul Sejourne, a distinguished French bridge engineer, the designer of at Ieast one of the bridges (at Fontpedrouse, pages 25-27) included in this set. When Lahey died, his wife Sybil and daughter Ann took steps to give this remarkable set of 58 historic bridge photographs to The University of Queensland. More recently, Lahey's daughters Ann Neale and Alison Drake have given a set of lantern plates collected by their father, many of which also have photographs of bridges. This volume is divided into three parts: (a) a biography of Romeo Watkins Lahey, written by his daughter, Ann Neale; (b) copies of the original set of 58 bridge photographs, and (c) copies taken from 32 lantern plates. To these have been added captions. Many of the original photographs carried titles; where these are available they have been printed in italics. Further work has been done to identify bridges and where possible the captions include the completion date, major dimensions, locations, and references to published works. Plates 8.1-10 are copies of drawings used as Figures in a book. These drawings have not been copied and the source has not been identified. Two lists of photographs and plates are included - the first in the order of the original collections and a second with bridges listed in the order of material, structural form and date. The collection is of remarkable value to any bridge historian, and is recommended for study by students.

A presentation and an analysis of the Islamic concept of emancipation of women as it is proposed by Bint al-Shati (1913-1998), an Egyptian specialist of Qur'anic exegesis, will illustrate her exegetical method. thereafter, some difficulties of her interpretation will be raised, shedding light on contradictions that her exegesis, which seeks to be both Islamic and modern, cannot avoid.

Editor—We reported the study in a transparent fashion and were deliberately cautious in our conclusions. Australia and the United Kingdom are very different with regard to arrangements for primary care, which did not permit us to undertake a preliminary assessment of the eligibility of men for screening before we randomised them and issued half invitations to attend for the ultrasound examination.
