Complete and precise characterization of a quantum dynamical process can be achieved via the method of quantum process tomography. Using a source of correlated photons, we have implemented several methods, each investigating a wide range of processes, e.g., unitary, decohering, and polarizing. One of these methods, ancilla-assisted process tomography (AAPT), makes use of an additional ancilla system, and we have theoretically determined the conditions when AAPT is possible. Surprisingly, entanglement is not required. We present data obtained using both separable and entangled input states. The use of entanglement yields superior results, however.

Detailed microscopic examination using optical and electron microscopes suggests that Al4C3, often observed in the central regions of magnesium grains on polished sections, is a potent substrate for primary Mg. We demonstrate a new architecture for an optical entangling gate that is significantly simpler than previous realizations, using partially polarizing beam splitters so that only a single optical mode-matching condition is required. We demonstrate operation of a controlled-z gate in both continuous-wave and pulsed regimes of operation, fully characterizing it in each case using quantum process tomography. We also demonstrate a fully resolving, nondeterministic optical Bell-state analyzer based on this controlled-z gate. This new architecture is ideally suited to guided optics implementations of optical gates.

This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of metaphors used by Hugo Chávez in his efforts to construct and legitimize his Bolivarian Revolution. It focuses on metaphors drawn from three of his most frequent target domains: the nation, his revolution, and the opposition. The author argues that behind an official discourse of inclusion, Chávez's choice of metaphors contributes to the construction of a polarizing discourse of exclusion in which his political opponents are represented as enemies of the nation. Chávez constructs this polarizing discourse of exclusion by combining metaphors that conceptualize: (a) the nation as a person who has been resurrected by his government, as a person ready to fight for his revolution, or as Chávez himself; (b) the revolution as war; and (c) members of the opposition as war combatants or criminals. At the same time, by making explicit references in his discourse about the revolution as the continuation of Simón Bolívar's wars of independence, Chávez contributes to represent opponents as enemies of the nation, given that in the Venezuelan collective imaginary Bolívar is the symbol of the nation's emancipation.

The work described represents a palynological study of Carboniferous coal seams of Upper Westphallan. A and Westphalian B age from eight off-shore boreholes sunk by the National Coal Board in Northumberland. When treated chemically the majority of the coal samples yielded well-preserved miospores which were studied by means of the optical and scanning electron microscopes. Systematic descriptions of 151 miospore species belonging to 57 genera, and including 18 new types, are given. One miospore assemblage is recognised from the coals of Upper Westphalian A age and two fUrther assemblages from those of Westphalian B age, These compare with assemblages described by earlier workers from strata of similar age elsewhere, but there are differences in the distributions of some of the more abundant taxa, and some of the stratigraphically significant species are not present. Correlations based on miospore distributions between the coal seams encountered in the eight off-shore boreholes agree fairly closely with those established by the National Coal Board on lithological criteria. Relations are discussed between palynology and palaeoecology and detailed comparisons made with the work of Smith and Butterworth 1967 from the adjacent on-shore area. It is concluded that the miospore assemblages described are restricted in that they contain very low representation of Smith's (1962) Densospore phase. This restriction, due to the relatively rapid subsidence of the depositional area, is reflected in the distributions of some of the less common spores as · well as in the abundances of species such as Densosporites sphaerotriangularis, Lycospora pusilla and Apiculatisporis irregularis.

It is anchored both in the theoretical framework provided by the cognitive linguistic metaphor theory developed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson described in their book Metaphors We Live By, and in Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) as defined by Jonathan Charteris-Black in his book Corpus Approaches to Critical Metaphor Analysis.The study provides the first comprehensive analysis of metaphors used by Chávez in his political discourse. It builds upon the findings of previous studies on political discourse analysis in Venezuela by showing that Chávez's discourse not only polarizes the country and represents opponents as detractors of national symbols such as Bolívar or his wars of independence (which have been clearly established in previous studies), but also represents political opponents as enemies of the nation.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) can play an important role in guiding the design of new materials, tailored to meet increasingly stringent constraints on performance devices, by providing insight into their surface compositions and the fundamental interactions between the surfaces and the environment. This chapter outlines the principles and application of XPS as a versatile, chemically specific analytical tool in determining the electronic structures and (usually surface) compositions of constituent elements within diverse functional materials. Advances in detector electronics have opened the way for development of photoelectron microscopes and instruments with XPS imaging capabilities. Advances in surface science instrumentation to enable time-resolved spectroscopic measurements offer exciting opportunities to quantitatively investigate the composition, structure and dynamics of working catalyst surfaces. Attempts to study the effects of material processing in realistic environments currently involves the use of high- or ambient-pressure XPS in which samples can be exposed to reactive environments.
